Shallow-circuit Supervised Learning on a Quantum Processor

Quantum computing has long promised transformative advances in data analysis, yet practical quantum machine learning has remained elusive due to fundamental obstacles such as a steep quantum cost for the loading of classical data and poor trainability of many quantum machine learning algorithms designed for near-term quantum hardware. In this work, we show that one can overcome these obstacles by using a linear Hamiltonian-based machine learning method which provides a compact quantum representation of classical data via ground state problems for k-local Hamiltonians. We use the recent sample-based Krylov quantum diagonalization method to compute low-energy states of the data Hamiltonians, whose parameters are trained to express classical datasets through local gradients. We demonstrate the efficacy and scalability of the methods by performing experiments on benchmark datasets using up to 50 qubits of an IBM Heron quantum processor.

Quantum Neuron with Separable-State Encoding

The use of advanced quantum neuron models for pattern recognition applications requires fault tolerance. Therefore, it is not yet possible to test such models on a large scale in currently available quantum processors. As an alternative, we propose a quantum perceptron (QP) model that uses a reduced number of multi-qubit gates and is therefore less susceptible to quantum errors in current actual quantum computers with limited tolerance. The proposed quantum algorithm is superior to its classical counterpart, although since it does not take full advantage of quantum entanglement, it provides a lower encoding power than other quantum algorithms using multiple qubit entanglement. However, the use of separable-sate encoding allows for testing the algorithm and different training schemes at a large scale in currently available non-fault tolerant quantum computers. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed model by implementing a few qubits version of the QP in a simulated quantum computer. The proposed QP uses an N-ary encoding of the binary input data characterizing the patterns. We develop a hybrid (quantum-classical) training procedure for simulating the learning process of the QP and test their efficiency.

The topological Petersson product

The nondegeneracy of the Petersson inner product on cusp forms, and the fact that Hecke operators are self-adjoint with respect to the Petersson product, together imply that the cusp forms have a basis consisting of Hecke eigenforms. In the literature on topological modular forms, no topological analogue of the Petersson product is to be found, and it is not known which topological spaces have the property that their topological cusp forms admit a basis consisting of eigenforms for the action of Baker's topological Hecke operators. In this note we define and study a natural topological Petersson product on complexified topological cusp forms, whose value on a one-point space recovers the classical Petersson product. We find that the topological Petersson product is usually degenerate: in particular, if $X$ is a space with nontrivial rational homology in any positive degree, then the Petersson product on complexified $tcf^*(X)$ is degenerate. Despite $tcf$-cohomology being a stable invariant, the topological Petersson product is an unstable invariant, vanishing on all suspensions. Nevertheless, we demonstrate nontriviality of the topological Petersson product by giving an explicit calculation of the topological Petersson product on complexified $tcf$-cohomology of the complex projective plane. We show that, for a compact Kahler manifold $X$, the Petersson product is nondegenerate on complexified $tcf$-cohomology of $X$ in a range of Atiyah-Hirzebruch filtrations (essentially one-third of the possibly-nonzero Atiyah-Hirzebruch filtrations in the $tcf$-cohomology of $X$).

Topological Hecke eigenforms

We study the eigenforms of the action of A. Baker's Hecke operators on the holomorphic elliptic homology of various topological spaces. We prove a multiplicity one theorem (i.e., one-dimensionality of the space of these "topological Hecke eigenforms" for any given eigencharacter) for some classes of topological spaces, and we give examples of finite CW-complexes for which multiplicity one fails. We also develop some abstract "derived eigentheory" whose motivating examples arise from the failure of classical Hecke operators to commute with multiplication by various Eisenstein series. Part of this "derived eigentheory" is an identification of certain derived Hecke eigenforms as the obstructions to extending topological Hecke eigenforms from the top cell of a CW-complex to the rest of the CW-complex. Using these obstruction classes together with our multiplicity one theorem, we calculate the topological Hecke eigenforms explicitly, in terms of pairs of classical modular forms, on all 2-cell CW complexes obtained by coning off an element in $π_n(S^m)$ which stably has Adams-Novikov filtration 1.

A geometric perspective on p-adic properties of mock modular forms

Bringmann, Guerzhoy and Kane have shown how to correct mock modular forms by a certain linear combination of the Eichler integral of their shadows in order to obtain p-adic modular forms in the sense of Serre. In this paper, we give a new proof of their results (for good primes p) by employing the geometric theory of harmonic Maass forms developed by the first author and the theory of overconvergent modular forms due to Katz and Coleman.

The algebraic functional equation of Riemann's theta function

We give an algebraic analog of the functional equation of Riemann's theta function. More precisely, we define a `theta multiplier' line bundle over the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian schemes with theta characteristic and prove that its dual is isomorphic to the determinant bundle over the moduli stack. We do so by explicitly computing with Picard groups over the moduli stack. This is all done over the ring R=Z[1/2,i]: passing to the complex numbers, we recover the classical functional equation.

The transformation laws of algebraic theta functions

We give a comprehensive treatment of the transformation laws of theta functions from an algebro-geometric perspective, that is, in terms of moduli of abelian schemes. This is accomplished by introducing geometric notions of theta-descent structures, metaplectic stacks, and bundles of half-forms, whose analytic incarnations underlie different aspects of the classical transformation laws. As an application, we lay the foundations for a geometric theory of modular forms of half-integral weight and, more generally, for modular forms taking values in the Weil representation. We discuss further applications to the algebraic theory of Jacobi forms and to the theory of determinant bundles of abelian schemes.

Vector valued modular forms and the modular orbifold of elliptic curves

This paper presents the theory of holomorphic vector valued modular forms from a geometric perspective. More precisely, we define certain holomorphic vector bundles on the modular orbifold of generalized elliptic curves whose sections are vector valued modular forms. This perspective simplifies the theory, and it clarifies the role that exponents of representations of SL_2(Z) play in the holomorphic theory of vector valued modular forms. Further, it allows one to use standard techniques in algebraic geometry to deduce free-module theorems and dimension formulae (deduced previously by other authors using different techniques), by identifying the modular orbifold with the weighted projective line P(4, 6).
