Chern-Simons theory, link invariants and the Askey-Wilson algebra

The occurrence of the Askey-Wilson (AW) algebra in the $SU(2)$ Chern-Simons (CS) theory and in the Reshetikhin-Turaev (RT) link invariant construction with quantum algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{su}_2)$ is explored. Tangle diagrams with three strands with some of them enclosed in a spin-$1/2$ closed loop are associated to the generators of the AW algebra. It is shown in both the CS theory and RT construction that the link invariant of these tangles obey the relations of the AW generators. It follows that the expectation values of certain Wilson loops in the CS theory satisfy relations dictated by the AW algebra and that the link invariants do not distinguish the corresponding linear combinations of links.

A classical model for perfect transfer and fractional revival based on $q$-Racah polynomials

It is shown how choices based on the $q$-Racah polynomials for the masses and spring constants along a chain give new systems that exactly allow dispersionless end-to-end transmission of a pulse as well as periodic splitting of the initial momentum between the first and last mass. This ``Newton's cradle'' provides a classical analog of quantum spin devices that exhibit perfect state transfer and fractional revival.

The $SU(3)\supset SO(3)$ missing label problem and the analytical Bethe ansatz

The missing label for basis vectors of $SU(3)$ representations corresponding to the reduction $SU(3) \supset SO(3)$ can be provided by the eigenvalues of $SO(3)$ scalars in the enveloping algebra of $su(3)$. There are only two such independent elements of degree three and four. It is shown how the one of degree four can be diagonalized using the analytical Bethe ansatz.

The rational Sklyanin algebra and the Wilson and para-Racah polynomials

The relation between Wilson and para-Racah polynomials and representations of the degenerate rational Sklyanin algebra is established. Second order Heun operators on quadratic grids with no diagonal terms are determined. These special or S-Heun operators lead to the rational degeneration of the Sklyanin algebra; they also entail the contiguity and structure operators of the Wilson polynomials. The finite-dimensional restriction yields a representation that acts on the para-Racah polynomials.

A unified algebraic underpinning for the Hahn polynomials and rational functions

An algebra denoted $m\mathfrak{H}$ with three generators is introduced and shown to admit embeddings of the Hahn algebra and the rational Hahn algebra. It has a real version of the deformed Jordan plane as a subalgebra whose connection with Hahn polynomials is established. Representation bases corresponding to eigenvalue or generalized eigenvalue problems involving the generators are considered. Overlaps between these bases are shown to be bispectral orthogonal polynomials or biorthogonal rational functions thereby providing a unified description of these functions based on $m\mathfrak{H}$. Models in terms of differential and difference operators are used to identify explicitly the underlying special functions as Hahn polynomials and rational functions and to determine their characterizations. An embedding of $m\mathfrak{H}$ in $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ is presented. A Padé approximation table for the binomial function is obtained as a by-product.

An algebraic description of the bispectrality of the biorthogonal rational functions of Hahn type

The biorthogonal rational functions of the ${_3}F_2$ type on the uniform grid provide the simplest example of rational functions with bispectrality properties that are similar to those of classical orthogonal polynomials. These properties are described by three difference operators $X,Y,Z$ which are tridiagonal with respect to three distinct bases of the relevant finite-dimensional space. The pairwise commutators of the operators $X,Y,Z$ generate a quadratic algebra which is akin to the algebras of Askey-Wilson type attached to hypergeometric polynomials.

Sklyanin-like algebras for ($q$-)linear grids and ($q$-)para-Krawtchouk polynomials

S-Heun operators on linear and $q$-linear grids are introduced. These operators are special cases of Heun operators and are related to Sklyanin-like algebras. The Continuous Hahn and Big $q$-Jacobi polynomials are functions on which these S-Heun operators have natural actions. We show that the S-Heun operators encompass both the bispectral operators and Kalnins and Miller's structure operators. These four structure operators realize special limit cases of the trigonometric degeneration of the original Sklyanin algebra. Finite-dimensional representations of these algebras are obtained from a truncation condition. The corresponding representation bases are finite families of polynomials: the para-Krawtchouk and $q$-para-Krawtchouk ones. A natural algebraic interpretation of these polynomials that had been missing is thus obtained. We also recover the Heun operators attached to the corresponding bispectral problems as quadratic combinations of the S-Heun operators

Superintegrability and the dual $-1$ Hahn algebra in superconformal quantum mechanics

A two-dimensional superintegrable system of singular oscillators with internal degrees of freedom is identified and exactly solved. Its symmetry algebra is seen to be the dual $-1$ Hahn algebra which describes the bispectral properties of the polynomials with the same name that are essentially the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the superconformal algebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$. It is also shown how this superintegrable model is obtained under dimensional reduction from a set of uncoupled harmonic oscillators in four dimensions.

Dunkl-Supersymmetric Orthogonal functions associated with classical orthogonal polynomials

We consider the eigenvalue problem associated with the Dunkl-type differential operator (in which the reflection operator R is involved) L = dx R + v(x), (v(-x) = -v(x)), in the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanical models. By solving this eigenvalue problem with the help of known exactly solvable potentials, we construct several classes of functions satisfying certain orthogonality relations. We call them the Dunkl-supersymmetric (Dunkl-SUSY) orthogonal functions. These functions can be expressed in terms of the classical orthogonal polynomials (COPs). The key feature of these functions is that they appear by pairs, i.e., Qn(x) and Qn(-x) are both the eigenfunctions of L. A general formulation of the Dunkl-SUSY orthogonal polynomials is also presented.

Perfect State Transfer in a Spin Chain without Mirror Symmetry

We introduce an analytical $XX$ spin chain with asymmetrical transport properties. It has an even number $N+1$ of sites labeled by $n=0,\cdots N$. It does not exhibit perfect state transfer (PST) from end-to-end but rather from the first site to the next to last one. In fact, PST of one-excitation states takes place between the even sites: $n\leftrightarrow N-n-1$, $n=0,2,\cdots, N-1$; while states localized at a single odd site undergo fractional revival (FR) over odd sites only. Perfect return is witnessed at double the PST/FR time. The couplings and local magnetic fields are related to the recurrence coefficients of the dual -1 Hahn polynomials.

Perfect State Transfer on Weighted Graphs of the Johnson Scheme

We characterize perfect state transfer on real-weighted graphs of the Johnson scheme $\mathcal{J}(n,k)$. Given $\mathcal{J}(n,k)=\{A_1, A_2, \cdots, A_k\}$ and $A(X) = w_0A_0 + \cdots + w_m A_m$, we show, using classical number theory results, that $X$ has perfect state transfer at time $τ$ if and only if $n=2k$, $m\ge 2^{\lfloor{\log_2(k)} \rfloor}$, and there are integers $c_1, c_2, \cdots, c_m$ such that (i) $c_j$ is odd if and only if $j$ is a power of $2$, and (ii) for $r=1,2,\cdots,m$, \[w_r = \fracπτ \sum_{j=r}^m \frac{c_j}{\binom{2j}{j}} \binom{k-r}{j-r}.\] We then characterize perfect state transfer on unweighted graphs of $\mathcal{J}(n,k)$. In particular, we obtain a simple construction that generates all graphs of $\mathcal{J}(n,k)$ with perfect state transfer at time $π/2$.

The $q$-Higgs and Askey-Wilson algebras

A $q$-analogue of the Higgs algebra, which describes the symmetry properties of the harmonic oscillator on the $2$-sphere, is obtained as the commutant of the $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2) \oplus \mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)$ subalgebra of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(4)$ in the $q$-oscillator representation of the quantized universal enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{u}(4))$. This $q$-Higgs algebra is also found as a specialization of the Askey--Wilson algebra embedded in the tensor product $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))\otimes U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$. The connection between these two approaches is established on the basis of the Howe duality of the pair $\big(\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(4),U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))\big)$.

preprint2019arXiv

The dual pair $\big(U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1)),\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2n)\big)$, $q$-oscillators and Askey-Wilson algebras

The universal Askey-Wilson algebra $AW(3)$ can be obtained as the commutant of $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ in $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))^{\otimes3}$. We analyze the commutant of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)\oplus\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)\oplus\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)$ in $q$-oscillator representations of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(6)$ and show that it also realizes $AW(3)$. These two pictures of $AW(3)$ are shown to be dual in the sense of Howe; this is made clear by highlighting the role of the intermediate Casimir elements of each members of the dual pair $\big(U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1)),\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(6)\big)$. We also generalize these results. A higher rank extension of the Askey-Wilson algebra denoted $AW(n)$ can be defined as the commutant of $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ in $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))^{\otimes n}$ and a dual description of $AW(n)$ as the commutant of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)^{\oplus n}$ in $q$-oscillator representations of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2n)$ is offered by calling upon the dual pair $\big(U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1)),\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2n)\big)$.

A superintegrable model with reflections on $S^3$ and the rank two Bannai-Ito algebra

A quantum superintegrable model with reflections on the three-sphere is presented. Its symmetry algebra is identified with the rank-two Bannai-Ito algebra. It is shown that the Hamiltonian of the system can be constructed from the tensor product of four representations of the superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ and that the superintegrability is naturally understood in that setting. The exact separated solutions are obtained through the Fischer decomposition and a Cauchy-Kovalevskaia extension theorem.

Hypergeometric Orthogonal Polynomials with respect to Newtonian Bases

We introduce the notion of "hypergeometric" polynomials with respect to Newtonian bases. These polynomials are eigenfunctions ($L P_n(x) = λ_n P_n(x)$) of some abstract operator $L$ which is 2-diagonal in the Newtonian basis $φ_n(x)$: $L φ_n(x) = λ_n φ_n(x) + τ_n(x) φ_{n-1}(x)$ with some coefficients $λ_n$, $τ_n$. We find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the polynomials $P_n(x)$ to be orthogonal. For the special cases where the sets $λ_n$ correspond to the classical grids, we find the complete solution to these conditions and observe that it leads to the most general Askey-Wilson polynomials and their special and degenerate classes.

Supersymmetry of the quantum rotor

The quantum rotor is shown to be supersymmetric. The supercharge $Q$, whose square equals the Hamiltonian, is constructed with reflection operators. The conserved quantities that commute with $Q$ form the algebra $so(3)_{-1}$, an anticommutator version of $so(3)$. The subduced representation of $so(3)_{-1}$ on the space of spherical harmonics with total angular momentum $j$ is constructed and found to decompose into two irreducible components. Two natural bases for the irreducible representation spaces of $so(3)_{-1}$ are introduced and their overlap coefficients prove expressible in terms of orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable called anti-Krawtchouk polynomials.

A Dirac-Dunkl equation on $S^2$ and the Bannai-Ito algebra

The Dirac-Dunkl operator on the 2-sphere associated to the $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$ reflection group is considered. Its symmetries are found and are shown to generate the Bannai-Ito algebra. Representations of the Bannai-Ito algebra are constructed using ladder operators. Eigenfunctions of the spherical Dirac-Dunkl operator are obtained using a Cauchy-Kovalevskaia extension theorem. These eigenfunctions, which correspond to Dunkl monogenics, are seen to support finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the Bannai-Ito algebra.

A novel analytic spin chain model with fractional revival

New analytic spin chains with fractional revival are introduced. Their nearest-neighbor couplings and local magnetic fields correspond to the recurrence coefficients of para-Racah polynomials which are orthogonal on quadratic bi-lattices. These models generalize the spin chain associated to the dual-Hahn polynomials. Instances where perfect state transfer also occurs are identified.

A superintegrable discrete harmonic oscillator based on bivariate Charlier polynomials

A simple discrete model of the two dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator is presented. It is superintegrable with su(2) as its symmetry algebra. It is constructed with the help of the algebraic properties of the bivariate Charlier polyno-mials. This adds to the other discrete superintegrable models of the oscillator based on Krawtchouk and Meixner orthogonal polynomials in several variables.

preprint2015arXiv

A superintegrable discrete oscillator and two-variable Meixner polynomials

A superintegrable, discrete model of the quantum isotropic oscillator in two-dimensions is introduced. The system is defined on the regular, infinite-dimensional $\mathbb{N}\times \mathbb{N}$ lattice. It is governed by a Hamiltonian expressed as a seven-point difference operator involving three parameters. The exact solutions of the model are given in terms of the two-variable Meixner polynomials orthogonal with respect to the negative trinomial distribution. The constants of motion of the system are constructed using the raising and lowering operators for these polynomials. They are shown to generate an $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ invariance algebra. The two-variable Meixner polynomials are seen to support irreducible representations of this algebra. In the continuum limit, where the lattice constant tends to zero, the standard isotropic quantum oscillator in two dimensions is recovered. The limit process from the two-variable Meixner polynomials to a product of two Hermite polynomials is carried out by involving the bivariate Charlier polynomials.

An algebraic interpretation of the multivariate $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials

The multivariate quantum $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials are shown to arise as matrix elements of "$q$-rotations" acting on the state vectors of many $q$-oscillators. The focus is put on the two-variable case. The algebraic interpretation is used to derive the main properties of the polynomials: orthogonality, duality, structure relations, difference equations and recurrence relations. The extension to an arbitrary number of variables is presented

Embeddings of the Racah Algebra into the Bannai-Ito Algebra

Embeddings of the Racah algebra into the Bannai-Ito algebra are proposed in two realizations. First, quadratic combinations of the Bannai-Ito algebra generators in their standard realization on the space of polynomials are seen to generate a central extension of the Racah algebra. The result is also seen to hold independently of the realization. Second, the relationship between the realizations of the Bannai-Ito and Racah algebras by the intermediate Casimir operators of the $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ and $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ Racah problems is established. Equivalently, this gives an embedding of the invariance algebra of the generic superintegrable system on the two-sphere into the invariance algebra of its extension with reflections, which are respectively isomorphic to the Racah and Bannai-Ito algebras.

On an integrable system related to the relativistic Toda lattice -Bäcklund transformation and integrable discretization

We study an integrable system related to the relativistic Toda lattice. The bilinear representation of this lattice is given and the Bäckulund transformation obtained. A fully discrete version is also introduced with its bilinear Bäcklund transformation and Lax pair. One-soliton solution of the discrete system is presented by use of Bäcklund transformation.

Quantum spin chains with fractional revival

A systematic study of fractional revival at two sites in $XX$ quantum spin chains is presented and analytic models with this phenomenon are exhibited. The generic models have two essential parameters and a revival time that does not depend on the length of the chain. They are obtained by combining two basic ways of realizing fractional revival in a spin chain each bringing one parameter. The first proceeds through isospectral deformations of spin chains with perfect state transfer. The second arises from the recurrence coefficients of the para-Krawtchouk polynomials with a bi-lattice orthogonality grid. It corresponds to an analytic model previously identified that can possess perfect state transfer in addition to fractional revival.

The equitable presentation of $\mathfrak{osp}_q(1|2)$ and a $q$-analog of the Bannai-Ito algebra

The equitable presentation of the quantum superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}_q(1|2)$, in which all generators appear on an equal footing, is exhibited. It is observed that in their equitable presentations, the quantum algebras $\mathfrak{osp}_q(1|2)$ and $\mathfrak{sl}_q(2)$ are related to one another by the formal transformation $q\rightarrow -q$. A $q$-analog of the Bannai-Ito algebra is shown to arise as the covariance algebra of $\mathfrak{osp}_q(1|2)$.

The multivariate Hahn polynomials and the singular oscillator

Karlin and McGregor's d-variable Hahn polynomials are shown to arise in the (d+1)-dimensional singular oscillator model as the overlap coefficients between bases associated to the separation of variables in Cartesian and hyperspherical coordinates. These polynomials in d discrete variables depend on d+1 real parameters and are orthogonal with respect to the multidimensional hypergeometric distribution. The focus is put on the d=2 case for which the connection with the three-dimensional singular oscillator is used to derive the main properties of the polynomials: forward/backward shift operators, orthogonality relation, generating function, recurrence relations, bispectrality (difference equations) and explicit expression in terms of the univariate Hahn polynomials. The extension of these results to an arbitrary number of variables is presented at the end of the paper.

The para-Racah polynomials

New bispectral polynomials orthogonal on a quadratic bi-lattice are obtained from a truncation of Wilson polynomials. Recurrence relation and difference equation are provided. The recurrence coefficients can be encoded in a perturbed persymmetric Jacobi matrix. The orthogonality relation and an explicit expression in terms of hypergeometric functions are also given. Special cases and connections with the para-Krawtchouk polynomials and the dual-Hahn polynomials are also discussed.

The quantum superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}_{q}(1|2)$ and a $q$-generalization of the Bannai-Ito polynomials

The Racah problem for the quantum superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}_{q}(1|2)$ is considered. The intermediate Casimir operators are shown to realize a $q$-deformation of the Bannai-Ito algebra. The Racah coefficients of $\mathfrak{osp}_q(1|2)$ are calculated explicitly in terms of basic orthogonal polynomials that $q$-generalize the Bannai-Ito polynomials. The relation between these $q$-deformed Bannai-Ito polynomials and the $q$-Racah/Askey-Wilson polynomials is discussed.

$q$-Rotations and Krawtchouk polynomials

An algebraic interpretation of the one-variable quantum $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials is provided in the framework of the Schwinger realization of $\mathcal{U}_{q}(sl_{2})$ involving two independent $q$-oscillators. The polynomials are shown to arise as matrix elements of unitary "$q$-rotation" operators expressed as $q$-exponentials in the $\mathcal{U}_{q}(sl_{2})$ generators. The properties of the polynomials (orthogonality relation, generating function, structure relations, recurrence relation, difference equation) are derived by exploiting the algebraic setting. The results are extended to another family of polynomials, the affine $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials, through a duality relation.

A "Continuous" Limit of the Complementary Bannai-Ito Polynomials: Chihara Polynomials

A novel family of $-1$ orthogonal polynomials called the Chihara polynomials is characterized. The polynomials are obtained from a "continuous" limit of the complementary Bannai-Ito polynomials, which are the kernel partners of the Bannai-Ito polynomials. The three-term recurrence relation and the explicit expression in terms of Gauss hypergeometric functions are obtained through a limit process. A one-parameter family of second-order differential Dunkl operators having these polynomials as eigenfunctions is also exhibited. The quadratic algebra with involution encoding this bispectrality is obtained. The orthogonality measure is derived in two different ways: by using Chihara's method for kernel polynomials and, by obtaining the symmetry factor for the one-parameter family of Dunkl operators. It is shown that the polynomials are related to the big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials by a Christoffel transformation and that they can be obtained from the big $q$-Jacobi by a $q\rightarrow -1$ limit. The generalized Gegenbauer/Hermite polynomials are respectively seen to be special/limiting cases of the Chihara polynomials. A one-parameter extension of the generalized Hermite polynomials is proposed.

The Bannai-Ito algebra and a superintegrable system with reflections on the 2-sphere

A quantum superintegrable model with reflections on the 2-sphere is introduced. Its two algebraically independent constants of motion generate a central extension of the Bannai--Ito algebra. The Schrodinger equation separates in spherical coordinates and its exact solutions are presented. It is further observed that the Hamiltonian of the system arises in the addition of three representations of the sl_{-1}(2) algebra (the dynamical algebra of the one-dimensional parabosonic oscillator). The contraction from the two-sphere to the Euclidean plane yields the Dunkl oscillator in two dimensions and its Schwinger-Dunkl symmetry algebra sd(2).

The Bannai-Ito polynomials as Racah coefficients of the sl_{-1}(2) algebra

The Bannai-Ito polynomials are shown to arise as Racah coefficients for sl_{-1}(2). This Hopf algebra has four generators including an involution and is defined with both commutation and anticommutation relations. It is also equivalent to the parabosonic oscillator algebra. The coproduct is used to show that the Bannai-Ito algebra acts as the hidden symmetry algebra of the Racah problem for sl_{-1}(2). The Racah coefficients are recovered from a related Leonard pair.

The Dunkl oscillator in three dimensions

The isotropic Dunkl oscillator model in three-dimensional Euclidean space is considered. The system is shown to be maximally superintegrable and its symmetries are obtained by the Schwinger construction using the raising/lowering operators of the dynamical sl_{-1}(2) algebra of the one-dimensional Dunkl oscillator. The invariance algebra generated by the constants of motion, an extension of u(3) with reflections, is called the Schwinger-Dunkl algebra sd(3). The system is shown to admit separation of variables in Cartesian, polar (cylindrical) and spherical coordinates and the corresponding separated solutions are expressed in terms of generalized Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials.

The Dunkl-Coulomb problem in the plane

The Dunkl-Coulomb system in the plane is considered. The model is defined in terms of the Dunkl Laplacian, which involves reflection operators, with a $r^{-1}$ potential. The system is shown to be maximally superintegrable and exactly solvable. The spectrum of the Hamiltonian is derived algebraically using a realization of $\mathfrak{so}(2,1)$ in terms of Dunkl operators. The symmetry operators generalizing the Runge-Lenz vector are constructed. On eigenspaces of fixed energy, the invariance algebra they generate is seen to correspond to a deformation of $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ by reflections. The exact solutions are given as products of Laguerre polynomials and Dunkl harmonics on the circle.

The Generic Superintegrable System on the 3-Sphere and the $9j$ Symbols of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$

The $9j$ symbols of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ are studied within the framework of the generic superintegrable system on the 3-sphere. The canonical bases corresponding to the binary coupling schemes of four $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ representations are constructed explicitly in terms of Jacobi polynomials and are seen to correspond to the separation of variables in different cylindrical coordinate systems. A triple integral expression for the $9j$ coefficients exhibiting their symmetries is derived. A double integral formula is obtained by extending the model to the complex three-sphere and taking the complex radius to zero. The explicit expression for the vacuum coefficients is given. Raising and lowering operators are constructed and are used to recover the relations between contiguous coefficients. It is seen that the $9j$ symbols can be expressed as the product of the vacuum coefficients and a rational function. The recurrence relations and the difference equations satisfied by the $9j$ coefficients are derived.

The multivariate Charlier polynomials as matrix elements of the Euclidean group representation on oscillator states

A family of multivariate orthogonal polynomials generalizing the standard (univariate) Charlier polynomials is shown to arise in the matrix elements of the unitary representation of the Euclidean group E(d) on oscillator states. These polynomials in d discrete variables are orthogonal on the product of d Poisson distributions. The accent is put on the d=2 case and the group theoretical setting is used to obtain the main properties of the polynomials: orthogonality and recurrence relations, difference equation, raising/lowering relations, generating function, hypergeometric and integral representations and explicit expression in terms of standard Charlier and Krawtchouk polynomials. The approach is seen to extend straightforwardly to an arbitrary number of variables. The contraction of SO(3) to E(2) is used to show that the bivariate Charlier polynomials correspond to a limit of the bivariate Krawtchouk polynomials.

The multivariate Meixner polynomials as matrix elements of $SO(d,1)$ representations on oscillator states

The multivariate Meixner polynomials are shown to arise as matrix elements of unitary representations of the $SO(d,1)$ group on oscillator states. These polynomials depend on $d$ discrete variables and are orthogonal with respect to the negative multinomial distribution. The emphasis is put on the bivariate case for which the SO(2,1) connection is used to derive the main properties of the polynomials: orthogonality relation, raising/lowering relations, generating function, recurrence relations and difference equations as well as explicit expressions in terms of standard (univariate) Krawtchouk and Meixner polynomials. It is explained how these results generalize directly to $d$ variables.

Two-variable $-1$ Jacobi polynomials

A two-variable generalization of the Big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials is introduced and characterized. These bivariate polynomials are constructed as a coupled product of two univariate Big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials. Their orthogonality measure is obtained. An alternative derivation of the weight function using Pearson-type equations is presented.

A Laplace-Dunkl equation on $S^2$ and the Bannai-Ito algebra

The analysis of the $\mathbb{Z}_2^{3}$ Laplace-Dunkl equation on the $2$-sphere is cast in the framework of the Racah problem for the Hopf algebra $sl_{-1}(2)$. The related Dunkl-Laplace operator is shown to correspond to a quadratic expression in the total Casimir operator of the tensor product of three irreducible $sl_{-1}(2)$-modules. The operators commuting with the Dunkl Laplacian are seen to coincide with the intermediate Casimir operators and to realize a central extension of the Bannai-Ito (BI) algebra. Functions on $S^2$ spanning irreducible modules of the BI algebra are constructed and given explicitly in terms of Jacobi polynomials. The BI polynomials occur as expansion coefficients between two such bases composed of functions separated in different coordinate systems.

Birth and death processes and quantum spin chains

This papers underscores the intimate connection between the quantum walks generated by certain spin chain Hamiltonians and classical birth and death processes. It is observed that transition amplitudes between single excitation states of the spin chains have an expression in terms of orthogonal polynomials which is analogous to the Karlin-McGregor representation formula of the transition probability functions for classes of birth and death processes. As an application, we present a characterization of spin systems for which the probability to return to the point of origin at some time is 1 or almost 1.

Bispectrality of the Complementary Bannai-Ito Polynomials

A one-parameter family of operators that have the complementary Bannai-Ito (CBI) polynomials as eigenfunctions is obtained. The CBI polynomials are the kernel partners of the Bannai-Ito polynomials and also correspond to a $q\rightarrow-1$ limit of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The eigenvalue equations for the CBI polynomials are found to involve second order Dunkl shift operators with reflections and exhibit quadratic spectra. The algebra associated to the CBI polynomials is given and seen to be a deformation of the Askey-Wilson algebra with an involution. The relation between the CBI polynomials and the recently discovered dual -1 Hahn and para-Krawtchouk polynomials, as well as their relation with the symmetric Hahn polynomials, is also discussed.

Interbasis expansions for the isotropic 3D harmonic oscillator and bivariate Krawtchouk polynomials

An explicit expression for the general bivariate Krawtchouk polynomials is obtained in terms of the standard Krawtchouk and dual Hahn polynomials. The bivariate Krawtchouk polynomials occur as matrix elements of the unitary reducible representations of SO(3) on the energy eigenspaces of the 3-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator and the explicit formula is obtained from the decomposition of these representations into their irreducible components. The decomposition entails expanding the Cartesian basis states in the spherical bases that span irreducible SO(3) representations. The overlap coefficients are obtained from the Clebsch-Gordan problem for the su(1,1) Lie algebra.

Superintegrability in two dimensions and the Racah-Wilson algebra

The analysis of the most general second-order superintegrable system in two dimensions: the generic 3-parameter model on the 2-sphere, is cast in the framework of the Racah problem for the su(1,1) algebra. The Hamiltonian of the 3-parameter system and the generators of its quadratic symmetry algebra are seen to correspond to the total and intermediate Casimir operators of the combination of three su(1,1) algebras, respectively. The construction makes explicit the isomorphism between the Racah-Wilson algebra, which is the fundamental algebraic structure behind the Racah problem for su(1,1), and the invariance algebra of the generic 3-parameter system. It also provides an explanation for the occurrence of the Racah polynomials as overlap coefficients in this context. The irreducible representations of the Racah-Wilson algebra are reviewed as well as their connection with the Askey scheme of classical orthogonal polynomials.

The algebra of dual -1 Hahn polynomials and the Clebsch-Gordan problem of sl_{-1}(2)

The algebra H of the dual -1 Hahn polynomials is derived and shown to arise in the Clebsch-Gordan problem of sl_{-1}(2). The dual -1 Hahn polynomials are the bispectral polynomials of a discrete argument obtained from a q-> -1 limit of the dual q-Hahn polynomials. The Hopf algebra sl_{-1}(2) has four generators including an involution, it is also a q-> -1 limit of the quantum algebra sl_{q}(2) and furthermore, the dynamical algebra of the parabose oscillator. The algebra H, a two-parameter generalization of u(2) with an involution as additional generator, is first derived from the recurrence relation of the -1 Hahn polynomials. It is then shown that H can be realized in terms of the generators of two added sl_{-1}(2) algebras, so that the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of sl_{-1}(2) are dual -1 Hahn polynomials. An irreducible representation of H involving five-diagonal matrices and connected to the difference equation of the dual -1 Hahn polynomials is constructed.

The Dunkl oscillator in the plane I : superintegrability, separated wavefunctions and overlap coefficients

The isotropic Dunkl oscillator model in the plane is investigated. The model is defined by a Hamiltonian constructed from the combination of two independent parabosonic oscillators. The system is superintegrable and its symmetry generators are obtained by the Schwinger construction using parabosonic creation/annihilation operators. The algebra generated by the constants of motion, which we term the Schwinger-Dunkl algebra, is an extension of the Lie algebra u(2) with involutions. The system admits separation of variables in both Cartesian and polar coordinates. The separated wavefunctions are respectively expressed in terms of generalized Hermite polynomials and products of Jacobi and Laguerre polynomials. Moreover, the so-called Jacobi-Dunkl polynomials appear as eigenfunctions of the symmetry operator responsible for the separation of variables in polar coordinates. The expansion coefficients between the Cartesian and polar bases (overlap coefficients) are given as linear combinations of dual -1 Hahn polynomials. The connection with the Clebsch-Gordan problem of the sl_{-1}(2) algebra is explained.

The Dunkl oscillator in the plane II : representations of the symmetry algebra

The superintegrability, wavefunctions and overlap coefficients of the Dunkl oscillator model in the plane were considered in the first part. Here finite-dimensional representations of the symmetry algebra of the system, called the Schwinger-Dunkl algebra sd(2), are investigated. The algebra sd(2) has six generators, including two involutions and a central element, and can be seen as a deformation of the Lie algebra u(2). Two of the symmetry generators, J_3 and J_2, are respectively associated to the separation of variables in Cartesian and polar coordinates. Using the parabosonic creation/annihilation operators, two bases for the representations of sd(2), the Cartesian and circular bases, are constructed. In the Cartesian basis, the operator J_3 is diagonal and the operator J_2 acts in a tridiagonal fashion. In the circular basis, the operator J_2 is block upper-triangular with all blocks 2x2 and the operator J_3 acts in a tridiagonal fashion. The expansion coefficients between the two bases are given by the Krawtchouk polynomials. In the general case, the eigenvectors of J_2 in the circular basis are generated by the Heun polynomials and their components are expressed in terms of the para-Krawtchouk polynomials. In the fully isotropic case, the eigenvectors of J_2 are generated by little -1 Jacobi or ordinary Jacobi polynomials. The basis in which the operator J_2 is diagonal is then considered. In this basis, the defining relations of the Schwinger-Dunkl algebra imply that J_3 acts in a block tridiagonal fashion with all blocks 2x2. The matrix elements of J_3 in this basis are given explicitly.

The equitable Racah algebra from three su(1,1) algebras

The Racah algebra, a quadratic algebra with two independent generators, is central in the analysis of superintegrable models and encodes the properties of the Racah polynomials. It is the algebraic structure behind the su(1,1) Racah problem as it is realized by the intermediate Casimir operators arising in the addition of three irreducible su(1,1) representations. It has been shown that this Racah algebra can also be obtained from quadratic elements in the enveloping algebra of su(2). The correspondence between these two realizations is here explained and made explicit.

The Hahn superalgebra and supersymmetric Dunkl oscillator models

A supersymmetric extension of the Hahn algebra is introduced. This quadratic superalgebra, which we call the Hahn superalgebra, is constructed using the realization provided by the Dunkl oscillator model in the plane, whose Hamiltonian involves reflection operators. In this realization, the reflections act as grading operators and the odd generators are part of the Schwinger-Dunkl algebra, which is a two-parameter extension of the bosonic su(2) construction. The even part of the algebra is built from bilinears in the odd generators and satisfy the Hahn algebra supplemented with involutions. A family of supersymmetric Dunkl oscillator models in n dimensions is also considered. The Hamiltonians of these supersymmetric models differ from ordinary Dunkl oscillators by pure reflection terms. In two dimensions, the supersymmetric Dunkl oscillator is seen to have the even part of the Hahn superalgebra as invariance algebra.

The multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials as matrix elements of the rotation group representations on oscillator states

An algebraic interpretation of the bivariate Krawtchouk polynomials is provided in the framework of the 3-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator model. These polynomials in two discrete variables are shown to arise as matrix elements of unitary reducible representations of the rotation group in 3 dimensions. Many of their properties are derived by exploiting the group-theoretic setting. The bivariate Tratnik polynomials of Krawtchouk type are seen to be special cases of the general polynomials that correspond to particular rotations involving only two parameters. It is explained how the approach generalizes naturally to (d+1) dimensions and allows to interpret multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials as matrix elements of SO(d+1) unitary representations. Indications are given on the connection with other algebraic models for these polynomials.

The singular and the 2:1 anisotropic Dunkl oscillators in the plane

Two Dunkl oscillator models are considered: one singular and the other with a 2:1 frequency ratio. These models are defined by Hamiltonians which include the reflection operators in the two variables x and y. The singular or caged Dunkl oscillator is second-order superintegrable and admits separation of variables in both Cartesian and polar coordinates. The spectrum of the Hamiltonian is obtained algebraically and the separated wavefunctions are given in the terms of Jacobi, Laguerre and generalized Hermite polynomials. The symmetry generators are constructed from the su(1,1) dynamical operators of the one-dimensional model and generate a cubic symmetry algebra. In terms of the symmetries responsible for the separation of variables, the symmetry algebra of the singular Dunkl oscillator is quadratic and can be identified with a special case of the Askey-Wilson algebra AW(3) with central involutions. The 2:1 anisotropic Dunkl oscillator model is also second-order superintegrable. The energies of the system are obtained algebraically, the symmetry generators are constructed using the dynamical operators and the resulting symmetry algebra is quadratic. The general system appears to admit separation of variables only in Cartesian coordinates. Special cases where separation occurs in both Cartesian and parabolic coordinates are considered. In the latter case the wavefunctions satisfy the biconfluent Heun equation and depend on a transcendental separation constant.

A superintegrable finite oscillator in two dimensions with SU(2) symmetry

A superintegrable finite model of the quantum isotropic oscillator in two dimensions is introduced. It is defined on a uniform lattice of triangular shape. The constants of the motion for the model form an SU(2) symmetry algebra. It is found that the dynamical difference eigenvalue equation can be written in terms of creation and annihilation operators. The wavefunctions of the Hamiltonian are expressed in terms of two known families of bivariate Krawtchouk polynomials; those of Rahman and those of Tratnik. These polynomials form bases for SU(2) irreducible representations. It is further shown that the pair of eigenvalue equations for each of these families are related to each other by an SU(2) automorphism. A finite model of the anisotropic oscillator that has wavefunctions expressed in terms of the same Rahman polynomials is also introduced. In the continuum limit, when the number of grid points goes to infinity, standard two-dimensional harmonic oscillators are obtained. The analysis provides the $N\rightarrow \infty$ limit of the bivariate Krawtchouk polynomials as a product of one-variable Hermite polynomials.

Almost perfect state transfer in quantum spin chains

The natural notion of almost perfect state transfer (APST) is examined. It is applied to the modelling of efficient quantum wires with the help of $XX$ spin chains. It is shown that APST occurs in mirror-symmetric systems, when the 1-excitation energies of the chains are linearly independent over rational numbers. This result is obtained as a corollary of the Kronecker theorem in Diophantine approximation. APST happens under much less restrictive conditions than perfect state transfer (PST) and moreover accommodates the unavoidable imperfections. Some examples are discussed.

d-Orthogonal polynomials and su(2)

Two families of d-orthogonal polynomials related to su(2) are identified and studied. The algebraic setting allows their full characterization (explicit expressions, recurrence relations, difference equations, generating functions, etc.) of those polynomials. In the limit where su(2) contracts to the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra h_1, these polynomials tend to the standard Meixner polynomials and d-Charlier polynomials, respectively.

Dunkl shift operators and Bannai-Ito polynomials

We consider the most general Dunkl shift operator $L$ with the following properties: (i) $L$ is of first order in the shift operator and involves reflections; (ii) $L$ preserves the space of polynomials of a given degree; (iii) $L$ is potentially self-adjoint. We show that under these conditions, the operator $L$ has eigenfunctions which coincide with the Bannai-Ito polynomials. We construct a polynomial basis which is lower-triangular and two-diagonal with respect to the action of the operator $L$. This allows to express the BI polynomials explicitly. We also present an anti-commutator AW(3) algebra corresponding to this operator. From the representations of this algebra, we derive the structure and recurrence relations of the BI polynomials. We introduce new orthogonal polynomials - referred to as the complementary BI polynomials - as an alternative $q \to -1$ limit of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. These complementary BI polynomials lead to a new explicit expression for the BI polynomials in terms of the ordinary Wilson polynomials.

Families of superintegrable Hamiltonians constructed from exceptional polynomials

We introduce a family of exactly-solvable two-dimensional Hamiltonians whose wave functions are given in terms of Laguerre and exceptional Jacobi polynomials. The Hamiltonians contain purely quantum terms which vanish in the classical limit leaving only a previously known family of superintegrable systems. Additional, higher-order integrals of motion are constructed from ladder operators for the considered orthogonal polynomials proving the quantum system to be superintegrable.

Generalized squeezed-coherent states of the finite one-dimensional oscillator and matrix multi-orthogonality

A set of generalized squeezed-coherent states for the finite u(2) oscillator is obtained. These states are given as linear combinations of the mode eigenstates with amplitudes determined by matrix elements of exponentials in the su(2) generators. These matrix elements are given in the (N+1)-dimensional basis of the finite oscillator eigenstates and are seen to involve 3x3 matrix multi-orthogonal polynomials Q_n(k) in a discrete variable k which have the Krawtchouk and vector-orthogonal polynomials as their building blocks. The algebraic setting allows for the characterization of these polynomials and the computation of mean values in the squeezed-coherent states. In the limit where N goes to infinity and the discrete oscillator approaches the standard harmonic oscillator, the polynomials tend to 2x2 matrix orthogonal polynomials and the squeezed-coherent states tend to those of the standard oscillator.

Quantum State Transfer in a Two-dimensional Regular Spin Lattice of Triangular Shape

Quantum state transfer in a triangular domain of a two-dimensional, equally-spaced, spin lat- tice with non-homogeneous nearest-neighbor couplings is analyzed. An exact solution of the one- excitation dynamics is provided in terms of 2-variable Krawtchouk orthogonal polynomials that have been recently defined. The probability amplitude for an excitation to transit from one site to another is given. For some values of the parameters, perfect transfer is shown to take place from the apex of the lattice to the boundary hypotenuse.

An infinite family of superintegrable Hamiltonians with reflection in the plane

We introduce a new infinite class of superintegrable quantum systems in the plane. Their Hamiltonians involve reflection operators. The associated Schrödinger equations admit separation of variables in polar coordinates and are exactly solvable. The angular part of the wave function is expressed in terms of little -1 Jacobi polynomials. The spectra exhibit "accidental" degeneracies. The superintegrability of the model is proved using the recurrence relation approach. The (higher-order) constants of motion are constructed and the structure equations of the symmetry algebra obtained.

CMV matrices and little and big -1 Jacobi polynomials

We introduce a new map from polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle to polynomials orthogonal on the real axis. This map is closely related with the theory of CMV matrices. It contains an arbitrary parameter which leads to a linear operator pencil. We show that the little and big -1 Jacobi polynomials are naturally obtained under this map from the Jacobi polynomials on the unit circle.

Dual -1 Hahn polynomials: "classical" polynomials beyond the Leonard duality

We introduce the -1 dual Hahn polynomials through an appropriate $q \to -1$ limit of the dual q-Hahn polynomials. These polynomials are orthogonal on a finite set of discrete points on the real axis, but in contrast to the classical orthogonal polynomials of the Askey scheme, the -1 dual Hahn polynomials do not exhibit the Leonard duality property. Instead, these polynomials satisfy a 4-th order difference eigenvalue equation and thus possess a bispectrality property. The corresponding generalized Leonard pair consists of two matrices $A,B$ each of size $N+1 \times N+1$. In the eigenbasis where the matrix $A$ is diagonal, the matrix $B$ is 3-diagonal; but in the eigenbasis where the matrix $B$ is diagonal, the matrix $A$ is 5-diagonal.

From $sl_q(2)$ to a Parabosonic Hopf Algebra

A Hopf algebra with four generators among which an involution (reflection) operator, is introduced. The defining relations involve commutators and anticommutators. The discrete series representations are developed. Designated by $sl_{-1}(2)$, this algebra encompasses the Lie superalgebra $osp(1|2)$. It is obtained as a $q=-1$ limit of the $sl_q(2)$ algebra and seen to be equivalent to the parabosonic oscillator algebra in irreducible representations. It possesses a noncocommutative coproduct. The Clebsch-Gordan coefficients (CGC) of $sl_{-1}(2)$ are obtained and expressed in terms of the dual -1 Hahn polynomials. A generating function for the CGC is derived using a Bargmann realization.

How to construct spin chains with perfect state transfer

It is shown how to systematically construct the $XX$ quantum spin chains with nearest-neighbor interactions that allow perfect state transfer (PST). Sets of orthogonal polynomials (OPs) are in correspondence with such systems. The key observation is that for any admissible one-excitation energy spectrum, the weight function of the associated OPs is uniquely prescribed. This entails the complete characterization of these PST models with the mirror symmetry property arising as a corollary. A simple and efficient algorithm to obtain the corresponding Hamiltonians is presented. A new model connected to a special case of the symmetric $q$-Racah polynomials is offered. It is also explained how additional models with PST can be derived from a parent system by removing energy levels from the one-excitation spectrum of the latter. This is achieved through Christoffel transformations and is also completely constructive in regards to the Hamiltonians.

Jordan algebras and orthogonal polynomials

We illustrate how Jordan algebras can provide a framework for the interpretation of certain classes of orthogonal polynomials. The big -1 Jacobi polynomials are eigenfunctions of a first order operator of Dunkl type. We consider an algebra that has this operator (up to constants) as one of its three generators and whose defining relations are given in terms of anticommutators. It is a special case of the Askey-Wilson algebra AW(3). We show how the structure and recurrence relations of the big -1 Jacobi polynomials are obtained from the representations of this algebra. We also present ladder operators for these polynomials and point out that the big -1 Jacobi polynomials satisfy the Hahn property with respect to a generalized Dunkl operator.

Representations of the Schrödinger group and matrix orthogonal polynomials

The representations of the Schrödinger group in one space dimension are explicitly constructed in the basis of the harmonic oscillator states. These representations are seen to involve matrix orthogonal polynomials in a discrete variable that have Charlier and Meixner polynomials as building blocks. The underlying Lie-theoretic framework allows for a systematic derivation of the structural formulas (recurrence relations, difference equations, Rodrigues' formula etc.) that these matrix orthogonal polynomials satisfy.

A limit $q=-1$ for the big q-Jacobi polynomials

We study a new family of "classical" orthogonal polynomials, here called big -1 Jacobi polynomials, which satisfy (apart from a 3-term recurrence relation) an eigenvalue problem with differential operators of Dunkl-type. These polynomials can be obtained from the big $q$-Jacobi polynomials in the limit $q \to -1$. An explicit expression of these polynomials in terms of Gauss' hypergeometric functions is found. The big -1 Jacobi polynomials are orthogonal on the union of two symmetric intervals of the real axis. We show that the big -1 Jacobi polynomials can be obtained from the Bannai-Ito polynomials when the orthogonality support is extended to an infinite number of points. We further indicate that these polynomials provide a nontrivial realization of the Askey-Wilson algebra for $q \to -1$.

More on the q-oscillator algebra and q-orthogonal polynomials

Properties of certain $q$-orthogonal polynomials are connected to the $q$-oscillator algebra. The Wall and $q$-Laguerre polynomials are shown to arise as matrix elements of $q$-exponentials of the generators in a representation of this algebra. A realization is presented where the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials form a basis of the representation space. Various identities are interpreted within this model. In particular, the connection formula between the continuous big $q$-Hermite polynomials and the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials is thus obtained, and two generating functions for these last polynomials are algebraically derived.

A Quantum Analogue of the Boson-Fermion Correspondence

We review the classical boson-fermion correspondence in the context of the $\widehat{sl(2)}$ current algebra at level 2. This particular algebra is ideal to exhibit this correspondence because it can be realized either in terms of three real bosonic fields or in terms of one real and one complex fermionic fields. We also derive a fermionic realization of the quantum current algebra $U_q(\widehat{sl(2)})$ at level 2 and by comparing this realization with the existing bosonic one we extend the classical correspondence to the quantum case.

Free-Field Representation of Group Element for Simple Quantum Group

The ``free fields'' $χ,\ \vecϕ,\ ψ$ form a Heisenberg-like algebra: $ψ^{(s)}ψ^{(s')} = q^{-\vecα_{i(s)} \vecα_{i(s')}} ψ^{(s')}ψ^{(s)}, & χ^{(s)}χ^{(s')} = q^{-\vecα_{i(s)}\vecα_{i(s')}} χ^{(s')}χ^{(s)}& {\rm for} \ s<s', \\ q^{\vec h\vecϕ}ψ^{(s)} = q^{\vec h\vecα_{i(s)}} ψ^{(s)}q^{\vec h\vecϕ}, & q^{\vec h\vecϕ}χ^{(s)} = q^{\vec h \vecα_{i(s)}}χ^{(s)}q^{\vec h\vecϕ}, & \\ &ψ^{(s)} χ^{(s')} = χ^{(s')}ψ^{(s)} & {\rm for\ any}\ s,s'.$ We argue that the $d_G$-parametric ``manifold'' which $g$ spans in the operator-valued universal envelopping algebra, can also be invariant under the group multiplication $g \rightarrow g'\cdot g''$. The universal ${\cal R}$-matrix with the property that ${\cal R} (g\otimes I)(I\otimes g) = (I\otimes g)(g\otimes I){\cal R}$ is given by the usual formula $${\cal R} = q^{-\sum_{ij}^{r_G}||\vecα_i||^2|| \vecα_j||^2 (\vecα\vecα)^{-1}_{ij}H_i \otimes H_j}\prod_{ \vecα> 0}^{d_B}{\cal E}_{q_{\vecα}}\left(-(q_{\vecα}- q_{\vecα}^{-1})T_{\vecα}\otimes T_{-\vecα}\right).$$

On a Bosonic-Parafermionic Realization of $U_q(\widehat{sl(2)})$

We realize the $U_q(\widehat{sl(2)})$ current algebra at arbitrary level in terms of one deformed free bosonic field and a pair of deformed parafermionic fields. It is shown that the operator product expansions of these parafermionic fields involve an infinite number of simple poles and simple zeros, which then condensate to form a branch cut in the classical limit $q\rightarrow 1$. Our realization coincides with those of Frenkel-Jing and Bernard when the level $k$ takes the values 1 and 2 respectively.
