Dynamical notions along filters

We study the localization along a filter of several dynamical notions. This generalizes and extends similar localizations that have been considered in the literature, e.g. near 0 and near an idempotent. Definitions and basic properties of F-syndetic, piecewise F-syndetic, collectionwise F-piecewise syndetic, F-quasi central and F-central sets and their relations with F-uniformly recurrent points and ultrafilters are studied. We provide also the nonstandard characterizations of some of the above notions and we prove the partition regularity of several nonlinear equations along filters under mild general assumptions.

Generalized solutions in PDE's and the Burgers' equation

In many situations, the notion of function is not sufficient and it needs to be extended. A classical way to do this is to introduce the notion of weak solution; another approach is to use generalized functions. Ultrafunctions are a particular class of generalized functions that has been previously introduced and used to define generalized solutions of stationary problems in [4,7,9,11,12]. In this paper we generalize this notion in order to study also evolution problems. In particular, we introduce the notion of Generalized Ultrafunction Solution (GUS) for a large family of PDE's, and we confront it with classical strong and weak solutions. Moreover, we prove an existence and uniqueness result of GUS's for a large family of PDE's, including the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and the nonlinear wave equation. Finally, we study in detail GUS's of Burgers' equation, proving that (in a precise sense) the GUS's of this equation provide a description of the phenomenon at microscopic level.

Ramsey properties of nonlinear Diophantine equations

We prove general sufficient and necessary conditions for the partition regularity of Diophantine equations, which extend the classic Rado's Theorem by covering large classes of nonlinear equations. Sufficient conditions are obtained by exploiting algebraic properties in the space of ultrafilters betaN, grounding on combinatorial properties of positive density sets and IP sets. Necessary conditions are proved by a new technique in nonstandard analysis, based on the use of the relation of u-equivalence for the hypernatural numbers *N.

The classical theory of calculus of variations for generalized functions

We present an extension of the classical theory of calculus of variations to generalized functions. The framework is the category of generalized smooth functions, which includes Schwartz distributions while sharing many nonlinear properties with ordinary smooth functions. We prove full connections between extremals and Euler-Lagrange equations, classical necessary and sufficient conditions to have a minimizer, the necessary Legendre condition, Jacobi's theorem on conjugate points and Noether's theorem. We close with an application to low regularity Riemannian geometry.

A generalization of Gauss' divergence theorem

This paper is devoted to the proof Gauss' divergence theorem in the framework of "ultrafunctions". They are a new kind of generalized functions, which have been introduced recently [2] and developed in [4], [5] and [6]. Their peculiarity is that they are based on a non Archimedean field namely on a field which contains infinite and infinitesimal numbers. Ultrafunctions have been introduced to provide generalized solutions to equations which do not have any solutions not even among the distributions.

A topological approach to non-Archimedean Mathematics

Non-Archimedean mathematics (in particular, nonstandard analysis) allows to construct some useful models to study certain phenomena arising in PDE's; for example, it allows to construct generalized solutions of differential equations and variational problems that have no classical solution. In this paper we introduce certain notions of non-Archimedean mathematics (in particular, of nonstandard analysis) by means of an elementary topological approach; in particular, we construct non-Archimedean extensions of the reals as appropriate topological completions of $\mathbb{R}$. Our approach is based on the notion of $Λ$-limit for real functions, and it is called $Λ$-theory. It can be seen as a topological generalization of the $α$-theory presented in \cite{BDN2003}, and as an alternative topological presentation of the ultrapower construction of nonstandard extensions (in the sense of \cite{keisler}). To motivate the use of $Λ$-theory for applications we show how to use it to solve a minimization problem of calculus of variations (that does not have classical solutions) by means of a particular family of generalized functions, called ultrafunctions.

F-finite embeddabilities of sets and ultrafilters

Let $S$ be a semigroup, let $n\in\mathbb{N}$ be a positive natural number, let $A,B\subseteq S$, let $\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V}\inβS$ and let let $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\{f:S^{n}\rightarrow S\}$. We say that $A$ is $\mathcal{F}$-finitely embeddable in $B$ if for every finite set $F\subseteq A$ there is a function $f\in\mathcal{F}$ such that $f\left(A^{n}\right)\subseteq B$, and we say that $\mathcal{U}$ is $\mathcal{F}$-finitely embeddable in $\mathcal{V}$ if for every set $B\in\mathcal{V}$ there is a set $A\in\mathcal{U}$ such that $A$ is $\mathcal{F}$-finitely embeddable in $B$. We show that $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddabilities can be used to study certain combinatorial properties of sets and ultrafilters related with finite structures. We introduce the notions of set and of ultrafilter maximal for $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddability, whose existence is proved under very mild assumptions. Different choices of $\mathcal{F}$ can be used to characterize many combinatorially interesting sets/ultrafilters as maximal sets/ultrafilters, for example thick sets, AP-rich sets, $\overline{K(βS)}$ and so on. The set of maximal ultrafilters for $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddability can be characterized algebraically in terms of $\mathcal{F}$. This property can be used to give an algebraic characterization of certain interesting sets of ultrafilters, such as the ultrafilters whose elements contain, respectively, arbitrarily long arithmetic, geoarithmetic or polynomial progressions. As a consequence of the connection between sets and ultrafilters maximal for $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddability we are able to prove a general result that entails, for example, that given a finite partition of a set that contains arbitrarily long geoarithmetic (resp. polynomial) progressions, one cell must contain arbitrarily long geoarithmetic (resp. polynomial) progressions.

The category of Colombeau algebras

In [11], we introduced the notion of asymptotic gauge (AG), and we used it to construct Colombeau AG-algebras. This construction concurrently generalizes that of many different algebras used in Colombeau's theory, e.g. the special one $\mathcal{G}^{\srm}$, the full one $\gse$, the NSA based algebra of asymptotic functions $\hat{\mathcal{G}}$, and the diffeomorphism invariant algebras $\gsd$, $\mathcal{G}^{2}$ and $\hat{\mathcal{G}}$. In this paper we study the categorical properties of the construction of Colombeau AG-algebras with respect to the choice of the AG, and we show their consequences regarding the solvability of generalized ODE.

A non-archimedean Algebra and the Schwartz impossibility theorem

In the 1950s L. Schwartz proved his famous impossibility result: for every k in N there does not exist a differential algebra (A,+,*,D) in which the distributions can be embedded, where D is a linear operator that extends the distributional derivative and satisfies the Leibnitz rule (namely D(u*v)=Du*v+u*Dv) and * is an extension of the pointwise product on the continuous functions. In this paper we prove that, by changing the requests, it is possible to avoid the impossibility result of Schwartz. Namely we prove that it is possible to construct an algebra of functions (A,+,*,D) such that (1) the distributions can be embedded in A in such a way that the restriction of the product to the C^{1} functions agrees with the pointwise product, namely for every f,g in C^{1} we have Φ(fg)=Φ(f)*Φ(g), and (2) there exists a linear operator D:A\rightarrow A that extends the distributional derivative and satisfies a weak form of the Leibnitz rule. The algebra that we construct is an algebra of restricted ultrafunction, which are generalized functions defined on a subset Σ of a non-archimedean field K (with Σ\subseteq R\subseteq K) and with values in K. To study the restricted ultrafunctions we will use some techniques of nonstandard analysis.

A nonstandard technique in combinatorial number theory

In [9], [15] it has been introduced a technique, based on nonstandard analysis, to study some problems in combinatorial number theory. In this paper we present three applications of this technique: the first one is a new proof of a known result regarding the algebra of \betaN, namely that the center of the semigroup (β\mathbb{N};\oplus) is \mathbb{N}; the second one is a generalization of a theorem of Bergelson and Hindman on arithmetic progressions of lenght three; the third one regards the partition regular polynomials in Z[X], namely the polynomials in Z[X] that have a monochromatic solution for every finite coloration of N. We will study this last application in more detail: we will prove some algebraical properties of the sets of such polynomials and we will present a few examples of nonlinear partition regular polynomials. In the first part of the paper we will recall the main results of the nonstandard technique that we want to use, which is based on a characterization of ultrafilters by means of nonstandard analysis.

Asymptotic gauges: generalization of Colombeau type algebras

We use the general notion of set of indices to construct algebras of nonlinear generalized functions of Colombeau type. They are formally defined in the same way as the special Colombeau algebra, but based on more general growth condition formalized by the notion of asymptotic gauge. This generalization includes the special, full and nonstandard analysis based Colombeau type algebras in a unique framework. We compare Colombeau algebras generated by asymptotic gauges with other analogous construction, and we study systematically their properties, with particular attention to the existence and definition of embeddings of distributions. We finally prove that, in our framework, for every linear homogeneous ODE with generalized coefficients there exists a minimal Colombeau algebra generated by asymptotic gauges in which the ODE can be uniquely solved. This marks a main difference with the Colombeau special algebra, where only linear homogeneous ODEs satisfying some restriction on the coefficients can be solved.

Generalized Functions Beyond Distributions

Ultrafunctions are a particular class of functions defined on a Non Archimedean field R^{*}\supset R. They have been introduced and studied in some previous works ([1],[2],[3]). In this paper we introduce a modified notion of ultrafunction and we discuss sistematically the properties that this modification allows. In particular, we will concentrated on the definition and the properties of the operators of derivation and integration of ultrafunctions.

Ultrafilters maximal for finite embeddability

In [1] the authors showed some basic properties of a pre-order that arose in combinatorial number theory, namely the finite embeddability between sets of natural numbers, and they presented its generalization to ultrafilters, which is related to the algebraical and topological structure of the Stone-Čech compactification of the discrete space of natural numbers. In this present paper we continue the study of these pre-orders. In particular, we prove that there exist ultrafilters maximal for finite embeddability, and we show that the set of such ultrafilters is the closure of the minimal bilateral ideal in the semigroup $(\bN,\oplus)$, namely $\overline{K(\bN,\oplus)}$. As a consequence, we easily derive many combinatorial properties of ultrafilters in $\overline{K(\bN,\oplus)}$. We also give an alternative proof of our main result based on nonstandard models of arithmetic.

Ultrafunctions and Applications

Ultrafunctions have been introduced to provide generalized solutions to equations which do not have any solutions not even among the distributions. Some of these applications will be presented in the second part of this paper.

Partition Regularity of Nonlinear Polynomials: a Nonstandard Approach

In 2011, Neil Hindman proved that for every natural number $n,m$ the polynomial \begin{equation*} \sum_{i=1}^{n} x_{i}-\prod\limits_{j=1}^{m} y_{j} \end{equation*} has monochromatic solutions for every finite coloration of $\mathbb{N}$. We want to generalize this result to two classes of nonlinear polynomials. The first class consists of polynomials $P(x_{1},...,x_{n},y_{1},...,y_{m})$ of the following kind: \begin{equation*} P(x_{1},...,x_{n},y_{1},...,y_{m})=\sum_{i=1}^{n}a_{i}x_{i}M_{i}(y_{1},...,y_{m}), \end{equation*} where $n,m$ are natural numbers, $\sum\limits_{i=1}^{n}a_{i}x_{i}$ has monochromatic solutions for every finite coloration of $\mathbb{N}$ and the degree of each variable $y_{1},...,y_{m}$ in $M_{i}(y_{1},...,y_{m})$ is at most one. An example of such a polynomial is \begin{equation*} x_{1}y_{1}+x_{2}y_{1}y_{2}-x_{3}.\end{equation*} The second class of polynomials generalizing Hindman's result is more complicated to describe; its particularity is that the degree of some of the involved variables can be greater than one.\\ The technique that we use relies on an approach to ultrafilters based on Nonstandard Analysis. Perhaps, the most interesting aspect of this technique is that, by carefully chosing the appropriate nonstandard setting, the proof of the main results can be obtained by very simple algebraic considerations.

A model problem for ultrafunctions

The purpose of this paper is to show that Non-Archimedean Mathematics (NAM), namely mathematics which uses infinite and infinitesimal numbers, is useful to model some Physical problems which cannot be described by the usual mathematics. The problem which we will consider here is the minimization of the functional E(u,q)=1/2\int_{Omega}|\nabla u(x)|^{2}dx+u(q). If Omega is a subset of R^{N} is a bounded open set and u is a C^{2} function with condition u=0 on the boundary of Omega, this problem has no solution since inf E(u,q)=-\infty. On the contrary, as we will show, this problem is well posed in a suitable non-Archimedean frame. More precisely, we apply thegeneral ideas of NAM and some of the techniques of Non Standard Analysis to a new notion of generalized functions, called ultrafunctions, which are a particular class of functions based on a Non-Archimedean field. In this class of functions, the above problem is well posed and it has a solution.
