Asymptotic Properties of Quasi-Group Codes

This is a manuscript of a chapter prepared for a book. The good codes possess large information length and large minimum distance. A class of codes is said to be asymptotically good if there exists a positive real $δ$ such that, for any positive integer $N$ we can find a code in the class with code length greater than $N$, and with both the rate and the relative minimum distance greater than $δ$. The linear codes over any finite field are asymptotically good. More interestingly, the (asymptotic) GV-bound is a phase transition point for the linear codes; i.e., asymptotically speaking, the parameters of most linear codes attain the GV-bound. It is a long-standing open question: whether or not the cyclic codes over a finite field (which are an important class of codes) are asymptotically good? However, from a long time ago the quasi-cyclic codes of index $2$ were proved to be asymptotically good. This chapter consists of some of our studies on the asymptotic properties of several classes of quasi-group codes. We'll explain the studies in a consistent and self-contained style. We begin with the classical results on linear codes. In many cases we consider the quasi-group codes over finite abelian groups (including the cyclic case as a subcase of course), and study their asymptotic properties along two directions: (1) the order of the group (the coindex) is fixed while the index is going to infinity; (2) the index is small while the order of the group (the coindex) is going to infinity. Finally we describe the story on dihedral codes. The dihedral groups are non-abelian but near to cyclic groups (they have cyclic subgroups of index $2$). The asymptotic goodness of binary dihedral codes was obtained in the beginning of this century, and extended to the general dihedral codes recently.

Constacyclic symbol-pair codes: lower bounds and optimal constructions

Symbol-pair codes introduced by Cassuto and Blaum (2010) are designed to protect against pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. The higher the minimum pair distance, the more pair errors the code can correct. MDS symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that pair distance cannot be improved for given length and code size. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First we present three lower bounds for the minimum pair distance of constacyclic codes, the first two of which generalize the previously known results due to Cassuto and Blaum (2011) and Kai {\it et al.} (2015). The third one exhibits a lower bound for the minimum pair distance of repeated-root cyclic codes. Second we obtain new MDS symbol-pair codes with minimum pair distance seven and eight through repeated-root cyclic codes.

Three new classes of optimal frequency-hopping sequence sets

The study of frequency-hopping sequences (FHSs) has been focused on the establishment of theoretical bounds for the parameters of FHSs as well as on the construction of optimal FHSs with respect to the bounds. Peng and Fan (2004) derived two lower bounds on the maximum nontrivial Hamming correlation of an FHS set, which is an important indicator in measuring the performance of an FHS set employed in practice. In this paper, we obtain two main results. We study the construction of new optimal frequency-hopping sequence sets by using cyclic codes over finite fields. Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a cyclic code of length $n$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that $\mathcal{C}$ contains the one-dimensional subcode $ \mathcal{C}_0=\{(α,α,\cdots,α)\in \mathbb{F}_q^n\,|\,α\in \mathbb{F}_q\}. $ Two codewords of $\mathcal{C}$ are said to be equivalent if one can be obtained from the other through applying the cyclic shift a certain number of times. We present a necessary and sufficient condition under which the equivalence class of any codeword in $\mathcal{C}\setminus\mathcal{C}_0$ has size $n$. This result addresses an open question raised by Ding {\it et al.} in \cite{Ding09}. As a consequence, three new classes of optimal FHS sets with respect to the Singleton bound are obtained, some of which are also optimal with respect to the Peng-Fan bound at the same time. We also show that the two Peng-Fan bounds are, in fact, identical.

Mixed dimensional infinite soliton trains for nonlinear Schrödinger equations

In this note we construct mixed dimensional infinite soliton trains, which are solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations whose asymptotic profiles at time infinity consist of infinitely many solitons of multiple dimensions. For example infinite line-point soliton trains in 2D space, and infinite plane-line-point soliton trains in 3D space. This note extends the works of Le Coz, Li and Tsai [5, 6], where single dimensional trains are considered. In our approach, spatial $L^\infty$ bounds for lower dimensional trains play an essential role.

Thresholds of Random Quasi-Abelian Codes

For a random quasi-abelian code of rate $r$, it is shown that the GV-bound is a threshold point: if $r$ is less than the GV-bound at $δ$, then the probability of the relative distance of the random code being greater than $δ$ is almost 1; whereas, if $r$ is bigger than the GV-bound at $δ$, then the probability is almost 0. As a consequence, there exist many asymptotically good quasi-abelian codes with any parameters attaining the GV-bound.
