Categorical properties of reduction functors over non-positive DG-rings

Given a non-positive DG-ring $A$, associated to it are the reduction and coreduction functors $F(-) = \mathrm{H}^0(A)\otimes^{\mathrm{L}}_A -$ and $G(-) = \mathrm{R}\operatorname{Hom}_A(\mathrm{H}^0(A),-)$, considered as functors $\operatorname{\mathsf{D}}(A) \to \operatorname{\mathsf{D}}(\mathrm{H}^0(A))$, as well as the forgetful functor $S:\operatorname{\mathsf{D}}(\mathrm{H}^0(A)) \to \operatorname{\mathsf{D}}(A)$. In this paper we carry a systematic study of the categorical properties of these functors. As an application, a new descent result for vanishing of $\operatorname{Ext}$ and $\operatorname{Tor}$ over ordinary commutative noetherian rings is deduced.

Lifting (co)stratifications between tensor triangulated categories

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for stratification and costratification to descend along a coproduct preserving, tensor-exact $R$-linear functor between $R$-linear tensor-triangulated categories which are rigidly-compactly generated by their tensor units. We then apply these results to non-positive commutative DG-rings and connective ring spectra. In particular, this gives a support-theoretic classification of (co)localizing subcategories, and thick subcategories of compact objects of the derived category of a non-positive commutative DG-ring with finite amplitude, and provides a formal justification for the principle that the space associated to an eventually coconnective derived scheme is its underlying classical scheme. For a non-positive commutative DG-ring $A$, we also investigate whether certain finiteness conditions in $\mathsf{D}(A)$ (for example, proxy-smallness) can be reduced to questions in the better understood category $\mathsf{D}(H^0A)$.

Hochschild cohomology commutes with adic completion

For a flat commutative $k$-algebra $A$ such that the enveloping algebra $A\otimes_k A$ is noetherian, given a finitely generated bimodule $M$, we show that the adic completion of the Hochschild cohomology module $HH^n(A/k,M)$ is naturally isomorphic to $HH^n(\widehat{A}/k,\widehat{M})$. To show this, we (1) make a detailed study of derived completion as a functor $D(A) \to D(\widehat{A})$ over a non-noetherian ring $A$; (2) prove a flat base change result for weakly proregular ideals; and (3) Prove that Hochschild cohomology and analytic Hochschild cohomology of complete noetherian local rings are isomorphic, answering a question of Buchweitz and Flenner. Our results makes it possible for the first time to compute the Hochschild cohomology of $k[[t_1,\dots,t_n]]$ over any noetherian ring $k$, and open the door for a theory of Hochschild cohomology over formal schemes.

Relations between derived Hochschild functors via twisting

Let $k$ be a regular ring, and let $A,B$ be essentially finite type $k$-algebras. For any functor $F:{D}(A)\times\dots\times{D}(A)\to{D}(B)$ between their derived categories, we define its twist $F^{!}:{D}(A)\times\dots\times{D}(A)\to{D}(B)$ with respect to dualizing complexes, generalizing Grothendieck's construction of $f^{!}$. We show that relations between functors are preserved between their twists, and deduce that various relations hold between derived Hochschild (co)-homology and the $f^{!}$ functor. We also deduce that the set of isomorphism classes of dualizing complexes over a ring (or a scheme) form a group with respect to derived Hochschild cohomology, and that the twisted inverse image functor is a group homomorphism.

Cohomologically Cofinite Complexes

Let A be a commutative noetherian ring, and \a an ideal in it. In this paper we continue the study, begun in [PSY1], of the derived \a-adic completion and the derived \a-torsion functors. Here are our results: (1) a structural characterization of bounded above cohomologically complete complexes; (2) the Cohomologically Complete Nakayama Theorem; and (3) a characterization of cohomologically cofinite complexes.

Completion by Derived Double Centralizer

Let A be a commutative ring, and let \a be a weakly proregular ideal in A. (If A is noetherian then any ideal in it is weakly proregular.) Suppose M is a compact generator of the category of cohomologically \a-torsion complexes. We prove that the derived double centralizer of M is isomorphic to the \a-adic completion of A. The proof relies on the MGM equivalence from [PSY] and on derived Morita equivalence. Our result extends earlier work of Dwyer-Greenlees-Iyengar [DGI] and Efimov [Ef].

Derived Hochschild functors over commutative adic algebras

Let $\k$ be a commutative ring, and let $(A,\mfrak{a})$ be an adic ring which is a $\k$-algebra. We study complete and torsion versions of the derived Hochschild homology and cohomology functors of $A$ over $\k$. To do this, we first establish weak proregularity of certain ideals in flat base changes of noetherian rings. Next, we develop a theory of DG-affine formal schemes, extending the Greenlees-May duality and the MGM equivalence to this setting. Finally, we define complete and torsion derived Hochschild homology and cohomology functors in this setting, and show that if $\k$ is noetherian and $(A,\mfrak{a})$ is essentially of finite type (in the adic sense) over $\k$, then there are formulas to compute them that stay inside the noetherian category. In the classical case, where $\k$ is a field, we deduce that topological Hochschild cohomology and discrete Hochschild cohomology are isomorphic.

On the Homology of Completion and Torsion

Let A be a commutative ring, and \a a weakly proregular ideal in A. This includes the noetherian case: if A is noetherian then any ideal in it is weakly proregular; but there are other interesting examples. In this paper we prove the MGM equivalence, which is an equivalence between the category of cohomologically \a-adically complete complexes and the category of cohomologically \a-torsion complexes. These are triangulated subcategories of the derived category of A-modules. Our work extends earlier work by Alonso- Jeremias-Lipman, Schenzel and Dwyer-Greenlees.
