The first $α'$-correction to homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations using $O(d,d)$

We use the $O(d,d)$-covariant formulation of supergravity familiar from Double Field Theory to find the first $α'$-correction to (unimodular) homogeneous Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations of the bosonic string. A special case of this result gives the $α'$-correction to TsT transformations. In a suitable scheme the correction comes entirely from an induced anomalous double Lorentz transformation, which is needed to make the two vielbeins obtained upon the YB deformation equal. This should hold more generally, in particular for abelian and non-abelian T-duality, as we discuss.

Two-loop conformal invariance for Yang-Baxter deformed strings

The so-called homogeneous Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations can be considered a non-abelian generalization of T-duality--shift--T-duality (TsT) transformations. TsT transformations are known to preserve conformal symmetry to all orders in $α'$. Here we argue that (unimodular) YB deformations of a bosonic string also preserve conformal symmetry, at least to two-loop order. We do this by showing that, starting from a background with no NSNS-flux, the deformed background solves the $α'$-corrected supergravity equations to second order in the deformation parameter. At the same time we determine the required $α'$-corrections of the deformed background, which take a relatively simple form. In examples that can be constructed using, possibly non-commuting sequences of, TsT transformations we show how to obtain the first $α'$-correction to all orders in the deformation parameter by making use of the $α'$-corrected T-duality rules. We demonstrate this on the specific example of YB deformations of a Bianchi type II background.

Target space supergeometry of $η$ and $λ$-deformed strings

We study the integrable $η$ and $λ$-deformations of supercoset string sigma models, the basic example being the deformation of the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ superstring. We prove that the kappa symmetry variations for these models are of the standard Green-Schwarz form, and we determine the target space supergeometry by computing the superspace torsion. We check that the $λ$-deformation gives rise to a standard (generically type II*) supergravity background; for the $η$-model the requirement that the target space is a supergravity solution translates into a simple condition on the R-matrix which enters the definition of the deformation. We further construct all such non-abelian R-matrices of rank four which solve the homogeneous classical Yang-Baxter equation for the algebra so(2,4). We argue that the corresponding backgrounds are equivalent to sequences of non-commuting TsT-transformations, and verify this explicitly for some of the examples.

The complete one-loop BMN S-matrix in AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4)

We compute the full one-loop 2-particle S-matrix for excitations of the type IIB AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) BMN string. The S-matrix is found to respect the expected symmetries and the phases are consistent with the crossing equations. By analyzing how the relevant integrals scale with the IR regulator we show that scattering of massless bosons is trivial at two loops. Based on our results we argue that the additional su(2) S-matrix appearing in the massless sector in the exact solution should trivialize.

On integrability of strings on symmetric spaces

In the absence of NSNS three-form flux the bosonic string on a symmetric space is described by a symmetric space coset sigma-model. Such models are known to be classically integrable. We show that the integrability extends also to cases with non-zero NSNS flux (respecting the isometries) provided that the flux satisfies a condition of the form H_{abc}H^{cde}~R_{ab}^{de}. We then turn our attention to the type II Green-Schwarz superstring on a symmetric space. We prove that if the space preserves some supersymmetry there exists a truncation of the full superspace to a supercoset space and derive the general form of the superisometry algebra. In the case of vanishing NSNS flux the corresponding supercoset sigma-model for the string is known to be integrable. We prove that the integrability extends to the full string by augmenting the supercoset Lax connection with terms involving the fermions which are not captured by the supercoset model. The construction is carried out to quadratic order in these fermions. This proves the integrability of strings on symmetric spaces supported by RR flux which preserve any non-zero amount of supersymmetry. Finally we also construct Lax connections for some supercoset models with non-zero NSNS flux describing strings in AdS(2,3) x S(2,3) x S(2,3) x T(2,3,4) backgrounds preserving eight supersymmetries.

One- and two-loop checks for the AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) superstring with mixed flux

We compute the one-loop worldsheet S-matrix for the superstring in AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) supported by a combination of RR and NSNS flux in the massive sector. In the appropriate regularization scheme it agrees with the S-matrix found from symmetry considerations including the proposed dressing phases. As previously observed in other cases the massless modes decouple from the calculation of one-loop massive mode scattering. We also calculate the correction to the dispersion relation at two loops in the Near-Flat-Space limit and find agreement with a proposal for the form of the exact dispersion relation for the massive modes. Somewhat surprisingly the massless modes again decouple from the calculation (in a suitable regularization scheme). We also compute the correction to the dispersion relation for the massless modes and compare to a suggestion for the exact dispersion relation, finding a small discrepancy. The corresponding calculations for AdS(5) x S(5) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) are used for comparison.

T-Duality of Green-Schwarz Superstrings on AdS(d) x S(d) x M(10-2d)

We verify the self-duality of Green-Schwarz supercoset sigma models on AdS$_d \times S^d $ backgrounds (d=2,3,5) under combined bosonic and fermionic T-dualities without gauge fixing kappa symmetry. We also prove this property for superstrings on AdS$_d \times S^d \times S^d$ (d=2,3) described by supercoset sigma models with the isometries governed by the exceptional Lie supergroups $D(2,1;α)$ (d=2) and $D(2,1;α)\times D(2,1;α)$ (d=3), which requires an additional T-dualisation along one of the spheres. Then, by taking into account the contribution of non-supercoset fermionic modes (up to the second order), we provide evidence for the T-self-duality of the complete type IIA and IIB Green-Schwarz superstring theory on AdS$_d\times S^d \times T^{10-2d}$ (d=2,3) backgrounds with Ramond-Ramond fluxes. Finally, applying the Buscher-like rules to T-dualising supergravity fields, we prove the T-self-duality of the whole class of the AdS$_d\times S^d \times M^{10-2d}$ superbackgrounds with Ramond-Ramond fluxes in the context of supergravity.

The AdS(n) x S(n) x T(10-2n) BMN string at two loops

We calculate the two-loop correction to the dispersion relation for worldsheet modes of the BMN string in AdS(n) x S(n) x T(10-2n) for n=2,3,5. For the massive modes the result agrees with the exact dispersion relation derived from symmetry considerations with no correction to the interpolating function h. For the massless modes in AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) however our result does not match what one expects from the corresponding symmetry based analysis. We also derive the S-matrix for massless modes up to the one-loop order. The scattering phase is given by the massless limit of the Hernandez-Lopez phase. In addition we compute a certain massless S-matrix element at two loops and show that it vanishes suggesting that the two-loop phase in the massless sector is zero.

Superisometries and integrability of superstrings

For type II supergravity backgrounds with superisometries the corresponding transformations and conserved currents for the superstring are constructed up to fourth order in $Θ$. It is then shown how, for certain backgrounds related to near horizon geometries of intersecting branes, the components of the superisometry current can be used to construct a Lax connection demonstrating the classical integrability of the string in these backgrounds. This includes examples of $AdS_2$ and $AdS_3$ backgrounds with a $D(2,1;α)$ isometry group which have not previously been studied from an integrability point of view. The construction of the Lax connection is carried out up to second order in $Θ$.

Scattering in AdS(2)/CFT(1) and the BES Phase

We study worldsheet scattering for the type IIA superstring in AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6). Using the Green--Schwarz action to quartic order in fermions we take the near-BMN limit, where as in the AdS(3)/CFT(2) case there are both massive and massless excitations. For the massive excitations we compute all possible tree-level processes, and show that these agree with a truncated version of the exact AdS(5) x S(5) S-matrix. We also compute several S-matrix elements involving massless excitations. At one loop we find that the dressing phase is the same Hernandes-Lopez phase appearing in AdS(5)/CFT(4). We see the same phase when calculating this by semiclassical means using the PSU(1,1|2)/U(1)^2 coset sigma model, for which we can also study the scattering of fermions. This supports the conjecture that the all-loop dressing phase is again the BES phase, rather than a new phase like that seen in AdS(3)/CFT(2).

Semiclassical equivalence of Green-Schwarz and Pure-Spinor/Hybrid formulations of superstrings in AdS(5) x S(5) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6)

We demonstrate the equivalence between the worldsheet one-loop partition functions computed near classical string solutions in the Green-Schwarz and in the pure-spinor formulations of superstrings in AdS(5) x S(5). While their bosonic sectors are the same in the conformal gauge, their fermionic sectors superficially appear to be very different (first vs second derivative kinetic terms, presence vs absence of fermionic gauge symmetry). Still, we show that the quadratic fluctuation spectrum of sixteen fermionic modes of the pure-spinor formulation is the same as in the Green-Schwarz superstring and the contribution of the extra "massless" fermionic modes cancels against that of the pure-spinor ghosts. We also provide evidence for a similar semiclassical equivalence between the Green-Schwarz and the hybrid formulations of superstrings in AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) by studying several particular examples of string solutions.

The low energy limit of the AdS(3) x S(3) x M(4) spinning string

We derive the low-energy effective action for the spinning (GKP) string in AdS(3) x S(3) x M(4) where M(4) = S(3) x S(1) or T(4). In the first case the action consists of two O(4) non-linear sigma models which are coupled through their interaction with four massless Majorana fermions (plus one free decoupled scalar). While in the second case it consists of one O(4) sigma model coupled to four Majorana fermions together with four free scalars from the T(4). We show that these models are classically integrable by constructing their Lax connections.

The type II superstring to order theta^4

The Green-Schwarz superstring action in a general type IIA or IIB supergravity background is derived up to fourth order in the Grassmann-odd coordinates theta. This is done by solving the superspace Bianchi identities order by order in theta, to quadratic order for all superfields and to quartic order for the supervielbeins. For a large class of backgrounds it is possible to fix the kappa symmetry in such a way that the action actually terminates at the quartic order in theta.

Worldsheet scattering in AdS(3)/CFT(2)

We confront the recently proposed exact S-matrices for AdS(3)/CFT(2) with direct worldsheet calculations. Utilizing the BMN and Near Flat Space (NFS) expansions for strings on AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) and AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) we compute both tree-level and one-loop scattering amplitudes. Up to some minor issues we find nice agreement in the tree-level sector. At the one-loop level however we find that certain non-zero tree-level processes, which are not visible in the exact solution, contribute, via the optical theorem, and give an apparent mismatch for certain amplitudes. Furthermore we find that a proposed one-loop modification of the dressing phase correctly reproduces the worldsheet calculation while the standard Hernandez-Lopez phase does not. We also compute several massless to massless processes.

Classical and quantum integrability in AdS(2)/CFT(1)

We investigate the type IIA string on AdS(2)xS(2)xT(6) supported by RR-flux which describes the gravitational side of the AdS(2)/CFT(1) correspondence. While the four-dimensional part AdS(2)xS(2) can be realized as a supercoset, the full superstring has both coset and non-coset excitations, the latter giving rise to massless worldsheet modes, a somewhat novel feature in AdS/CFT. The string is nevertheless known to be integrable at the classical level. In this paper we perform several computations checking aspects of both classical and quantum string integrability. At the classical level we compute energies for the near BMN string and successfully match these against Bethe ansatz predictions. Furthermore, integrability dictates a magnon dispersion relation which we compare with the poles of loop corrected propagators, at both the one and two-loop level. At one loop, where only tadpole diagrams contribute, we find that the bosonic and fermionic contributions sum up to zero. Under the assumption of worldsheet supersymmetry, we then compute the two-loop sunset diagram in the near flat space limit. As in AdS(5)xS(5) we find that the result fits nicely into the sine-square structure of the dispersion relation.

Classical integrability and quantum aspects of the AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) superstring

In this paper we continue the investigation of aspects of integrability of the type IIA AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) and AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) superstrings. By constructing a one parameter family of flat connections we prove that the Green-Schwarz string is classically integrable, at least to quadratic order in fermions, without fixing the kappa-symmetry. We then compare the quantum dispersion relation, fixed by integrability up to an unknown interpolating function h(lambda), to explicit one-loop calculations on the string worldsheet. For AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) the spectrum contains heavy, as well as light and massless modes, and we find that the one-loop contribution differs depending on how we treat these modes showing that similar regularization ambiguities as appeared in AdS(4)/CFT(3) occur also here.

More on integrable structures of superstrings in AdS(4) x CP(3) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) superbackgrounds

In this paper we continue the study, initiated in arXiv:1009.3498 and arXiv:1104.1793, of the classical integrability of Green-Schwarz superstrings in AdS(4) x CP(3) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) superbackgrounds whose spectrum contains non-supercoset worldsheet degrees of freedom corresponding to broken supersymmetries in the bulk. We derive an explicit expression, to all orders in the coset fermions and to second order in the non-coset fermions, which extends the supercoset Lax connection in these backgrounds with terms depending on the non-coset fermions. An important property of the obtained form of the Lax connection is that it is invariant under Z_4-transformations of the superisometry generators and the spectral parameter. This demonstrates that the contribution of the non-coset fermions does not spoil the Z_4-symmetry of the super-coset Lax connection which is of crucial importance for the application of Bethe-ansatz techniques. The expressions describing the AdS(4) x CP(3) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) superstring sigma--models and their Lax connections have a very similar form. This is because their amount of target-space supersymmetries complement each other to 32=24+8, the maximal number of 10d type II supersymmetries. As a byproduct, this similarity has allowed us to obtain the form of the geometry of the complete type IIA AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) superspace to all orders in the coset fermions and to the second order in the non-coset ones.

Evidence for the classical integrability of the complete AdS(4) x CP(3) superstring

We construct a zero-curvature Lax connection in a sub-sector of the superstring theory on AdS(4) x CP(3) which is not described by the OSp(6|4)/U(3) x SO(1,3) supercoset sigma-model. In this sub-sector worldsheet fermions associated to eight broken supersymmetries of the type IIA background are physical fields. As such, the prescription for the construction of the Lax connection based on the Z_4-automorphism of the isometry superalgebra OSp(6|4) does not do the job. So, to construct the Lax connection we have used an alternative method which nevertheless relies on the isometry of the target superspace and kappa-symmetry of the Green-Schwarz superstring.

Simplifying superstring and D-brane actions in AdS(4) x CP(3) superbackground

By making an appropriate choice for gauge fixing kappa-symmetry we obtain a relatively simple form of the actions for a D=11 superparticle in AdS(4) x S(7)/Z_k, and for a D0-brane, fundamental string and D2-branes in the AdS(4) x CP(3) superbackground. They can be used to study various problems of string theory and the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence, especially in regions of the theory which are not reachable by the OSp(6|4)/U(3) x SO(1,3) supercoset sigma-model. In particular, we present a simple form of the gauge-fixed superstring action in AdS(4) x CP(3) and briefly discuss issues of its T-dualization.
