High-Quality Pluralistic Image Completion via Code Shared VQGAN

PICNet pioneered the generation of multiple and diverse results for image completion task, but it required a careful balance between $\mathcal{KL}$ loss (diversity) and reconstruction loss (quality), resulting in a limited diversity and quality . Separately, iGPT-based architecture has been employed to infer distributions in a discrete space derived from a pixel-level pre-clustered palette, which however cannot generate high-quality results directly. In this work, we present a novel framework for pluralistic image completion that can achieve both high quality and diversity at much faster inference speed. The core of our design lies in a simple yet effective code sharing mechanism that leads to a very compact yet expressive image representation in a discrete latent domain. The compactness and the richness of the representation further facilitate the subsequent deployment of a transformer to effectively learn how to composite and complete a masked image at the discrete code domain. Based on the global context well-captured by the transformer and the available visual regions, we are able to sample all tokens simultaneously, which is completely different from the prevailing autoregressive approach of iGPT-based works, and leads to more than 100$\times$ faster inference speed. Experiments show that our framework is able to learn semantically-rich discrete codes efficiently and robustly, resulting in much better image reconstruction quality. Our diverse image completion framework significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art both quantitatively and qualitatively on multiple benchmark datasets.

AutoScaler: Scale-Attention Networks for Visual Correspondence

Finding visual correspondence between local features is key to many computer vision problems. While defining features with larger contextual scales usually implies greater discriminativeness, it could also lead to less spatial accuracy of the features. We propose AutoScaler, a scale-attention network to explicitly optimize this trade-off in visual correspondence tasks. Our network consists of a weight-sharing feature network to compute multi-scale feature maps and an attention network to combine them optimally in the scale space. This allows our network to have adaptive receptive field sizes over different scales of the input. The entire network is trained end-to-end in a siamese framework for visual correspondence tasks. Our method achieves favorable results compared to state-of-the-art methods on challenging optical flow and semantic matching benchmarks, including Sintel, KITTI and CUB-2011. We also show that our method can generalize to improve hand-crafted descriptors (e.g Daisy) on general visual correspondence tasks. Finally, our attention network can generate visually interpretable scale attention maps.

Interactive 3D Face Stylization Using Sculptural Abstraction

Sculptors often deviate from geometric accuracy in order to enhance the appearance of their sculpture. These subtle stylizations may emphasize anatomy, draw the viewer's focus to characteristic features of the subject, or symbolize textures that might not be accurately reproduced in a particular sculptural medium, while still retaining fidelity to the unique proportions of an individual. In this work we demonstrate an interactive system for enhancing face geometry using a class of stylizations based on visual decomposition into abstract semantic regions, which we call sculptural abstraction. We propose an interactive two-scale optimization framework for stylization based on sculptural abstraction, allowing real-time adjustment of both global and local parameters. We demonstrate this system's effectiveness in enhancing physical 3D prints of scans from various sources.
