Uniform random covering problems

Motivated by the random covering problem and the study of Dirichlet uniform approximable numbers, we investigate the uniform random covering problem. Precisely, consider an i.i.d. sequence $ω=(ω_n)_{n\geq 1}$ uniformly distributed on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ and a sequence $(r_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of positive real numbers with limit $0$. We investigate the size of the random set \[ \mathcal U (ω):=\{y\in \mathbb{T}: \ \forall N\gg 1, \ \exists n \leq N, \ \text{s.t.} \ \| ω_n -y \| < r_N \}. \] Some sufficient conditions for $\mathcal U(ω)$ to be almost surely the whole space, of full Lebesgue measure, or countable, are given. In the case that $\mathcal U(ω)$ is a Lebesgue null measure set, we provide some estimations for the upper and lower bounds of Hausdorff dimension.

Minimality of p-adic rational maps with good reduction

A rational map with good reduction in the field $\mathbb{Q}\_p$ of $p$-adic numbers defines a $1$-Lipschitz dynamical system on the projective line $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{Q}\_p)$ over $\mathbb{Q}\_p$. The dynamical structure of such a system is completely described by a minimal decomposition. That is to say, $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{Q}\_p)$ is decomposed into three parts: finitely many periodic orbits; finite or countably many minimal subsystems each consisting of a finite union of balls; and the attracting basins of periodic orbits and minimal subsystems. For any prime $p$, a criterion of minimality for rational maps with good reduction is obtained. When $p=2$, a condition in terms of the coefficients of the rational map is proved to be necessary for the map being minimal and having good reduction, and sufficient for the map being minimal and $1$-Lipschitz. It is also proved that a rational map having good reduction of degree $2$, $3$ and $4$ can never be minimal on the whole space $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{Q}\_2)$.

Upper and lower fast Khintchine spectra in continued fractions

For an irrational number $x\in [0,1)$, let $x=[a\_1(x), a\_2(x),\cdots]$ be its continued fraction expansion. Let $ψ: \mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ be a function with $ψ(n)/n\to \infty$ as $n\to\infty$. The (upper, lower) fast Khintchine spectrum for $ψ$ is defined as the Hausdorff dimension of the set of numbers $x\in (0,1)$ for which the (upper, lower) limit of $\frac{1}{ψ(n)}\sum\_{j=1}^n\log a\_j(x)$ is equal to $1$. The fast Khintchine spectrum was determined by Fan, Liao, Wang, and Wu. We calculate the upper and lower fast Khintchine spectra. These three spectra can be different.

Dynamics of convergent power series on the integral ring of a finite extension of $\Qp$

Let $K$ be a finite extension of the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers and $Ø$ be its integral ring. The convergent power series with coefficients in $Ø$ are studied as dynamical systems on $Ø$. A minimal decomposition theorem for such a dynamical system is obtained. It is proved that there are uncountably many minimal subsystems, provided that there is a minimal set consisting of infinitely many points. In particular, the complete detailed minimal decompositions of all affine systems are derived.

Dynamics of the square mapping on the ring of $p$-adic integers

For each prime number $p$, the dynamical behavior of the square mapping on the ring $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of $p$-adic integers is studied. For $p=2$, there are only attracting fixed points with their attracting basins. For $p\geq 3$, there are a fixed point $0$ with its attracting basin, finitely many periodic points around which there are countably many minimal components and some balls of radius $1/p$ being attracting basins. All these minimal components are precisely exhibited for different primes $p$.

Uniform Diophantine approximation related to $b$-ary and $β$-expansions

Let $b\geq 2$ be an integer and $\hv$ a real number. Among other results, we compute the Hausdorff dimension of the set of real numbers $ξ$ with the property that, for every sufficiently large integer $N$, there exists an integer $n$ such that $1 \le n \le N$ and the distance between $b^n ξ$ and its nearest integer is at most equal to $b^{-\hv N}$. We further solve the same question when replacing $b^nξ$ by $T^n_βξ$, where $T_β$ denotes the classical $β$-transformation.

Multifractal analysis for expanding interval maps with infinitely many branches

In this paper we investigate multifractal decompositions based on values of Birkhoff averages of functions from a class of symbolically continuous functions. This will be done for an expanding interval map with infinitely many branches and is a generalisation of previous work for expanding maps with finitely many branches. We show that there are substantial differences between this case and the setting where the expanding map has only finitely many branches.

On minimal decomposition of $p$-adic homographic dynamical systems

A homographic map in the field of $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}_p}$ is studied as a dynamical system on $\mathbb{P}^{1}(\mathbb{Q}_p)$, the projective line over $\mathbb{Q}_p$. If such a system admits one or two fixed points in $\mathbb{Q}_p$, then it is conjugate to an affine dynamics whose dynamical structure has been investigated by Fan and Fares. In this paper, we shall mainly solve the remaining case that the system admits no fixed point. We shall prove that this system can be decomposed into a finite number of minimal subsystems which are topologically conjugate to each other. All the minimal subsystems are exhibited and the unique invariant measure for each minimal subsystem is determined.

On the fast Khintchine spectrum in continued fractions

For $x\in [0,1)$, let $x=[a_1(x), a_2(x),...]$ be its continued fraction expansion with partial quotients ${a_n(x), n\ge 1}$. Let $ψ: \mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ be a function with $ψ(n)/n\to \infty$ as $n\to \infty$. In this note, the fast Khintchine spectrum, i.e., the Hausdorff dimension of the set $$ E(ψ):=\Big{x\in [0,1): \lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{1}{ψ(n)}\sum_{j=1}^n\log a_j(x)=1\Big} $$ is completely determined without any extra condition on $ψ$.

Diophantine approximation by orbits of Markov maps

In 1995, Hill and Velani introduced the shrinking targets theory. Given a dynamical system $([0,1],T)$, they investigated the Hausdorff dimension of sets of points whose orbits are close to some fixed point. In this paper, we study the sets of points well-approximated by orbits $\{T^n x\}_{n\geq 0}$, where $T$ is an expanding Markov map with a finite partition supported by $[0,1]$. The dimensions of these sets are described using the multifractal properties of invariant Gibbs measures.

Dynamical properties of the negative beta transformation

We analyse dynamical properties of the negative beta transformation, which has been studied recently by Ito and Sadahiro. Contrary to the classical beta transformation, the density of the absolutely continuous invariant measure of the negative beta transformation may be zero on certain intervals. By investigating this property in detail, we prove that the $(-β)$-transformation is exact for all $β>1$, confirming a conjecture of Góra, and intrinsic, which completes a study of Faller. We also show that the limit behaviour of the $(-β)$-expansion of 1 when $β$ tends to 1 is related to the Thue-Morse sequence. A consequence of the exactness is that every Yrrap number, which is a $β>1$ such that the $(-β)$-expansion of 1 is eventually periodic, is a Perron number. This extends a well-known property of Parry numbers. However, the set of Parry numbers is different from the set of Yrrap numbers.
