Fundamental CRB-Rate Tradeoff in Multi-antenna Multicast Channel with ISAC

This paper studies the multi-antenna multicast channel with integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), in which a multi-antenna base station (BS) sends common messages to a set of single-antenna communication users (CUs) and simultaneously estimates the parameters of an extended target via radar sensing. We investigate the fundamental performance limits of this ISAC system, in terms of the achievable rate for communication and the estimation Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) for sensing. First, we derive the optimal transmit covariance in semi-closed form to balance the CRB-rate (C-R) tradeoff, and accordingly characterize the outer bound of a so-called C-R region. It is shown that the optimal transmit covariance should be of full rank, consisting of both information-carrying and dedicated sensing signals in general. Next, we consider a practical joint information and sensing beamforming design, and propose an efficient approach to optimize the joint beamforming for balancing the C-R tradeoff. Numerical results are presented to show the C-R region achieved by the optimal transmit covariance and the joint beamforming, as compared to other benchmark schemes.

Robust Transmit Beamforming for Secure Integrated Sensing and Communication

This paper studies a downlink secure integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, in which a multi-antenna base station (BS) transmits confidential messages to a single-antenna communication user (CU) while performing sensing on targets that may act as suspicious eavesdroppers. To ensure the quality of target sensing while preventing their potential eavesdropping, the BS combines the transmit confidential information signals with additional dedicated sensing signals, which play a dual role of artificial noise (AN) for degrading the qualities of eavesdropping channels. Under this setup, we jointly design the transmit information and sensing beamforming, with the objective of minimizing the weighted sum of beampattern matching errors and cross-correlation patterns for sensing subject to secure communication constraints. The robust design takes into account the channel state information (CSI) imperfectness of the eavesdroppers in two practical CSI error scenarios. First, we consider the scenario with bounded CSI errors of eavesdroppers, in which the worst-case secrecy rate constraint is adopted to ensure secure communication performance. In this scenario, we present the optimal solution to the worst-case secrecy rate constrained sensing beampattern optimization problem, by adopting the techniques of S-procedure, semi-definite relaxation (SDR), and a one-dimensional (1D) search, for which the tightness of the SDR is rigorously proved. Next, we consider the scenario with Gaussian CSI errors of eavesdroppers, in which the secrecy outage probability constraint is adopted. In this scenario, we present an efficient algorithm to solve the more challenging secrecy outage-constrained sensing beampattern optimization problem, by exploiting the convex restriction technique based on the Bernstein-type inequality, together with the SDR and 1D search.

Online Maneuver Design for UAV-Enabled NOMA Systems via Reinforcement Learning

This paper considers an unmanned aerial vehicle enabled-up link non-orthogonal multiple-access system, where multiple mobile users on the ground send independent messages to a unmanned aerial vehicle in the sky via non-orthogonal multiple-access transmission. Our objective is to design the unmanned aerial vehicle dynamic maneuver for maximizing the sum-rate throughput of all mobile ground users over a finite time horizon.

Resiliency Analysis and Improvement of Variational Quantum Factoring in Superconducting Qubit

Variational algorithm using Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) can solve the prime factorization problem in near-term noisy quantum computers. Conventional Variational Quantum Factoring (VQF) requires a large number of 2-qubit gates (especially for factoring a large number) resulting in deep circuits. The output quality of the deep quantum circuit is degraded due to errors limiting the computational power of quantum computing. In this paper, we explore various transformations to optimize the QAOA circuit for integer factorization. We propose two criteria to select the optimal quantum circuit that can improve the noise resiliency of VQF.

Area Spectral Efficiency Analysis and Energy Consumption Minimization in Multi-Antenna Poisson Distributed Networks

This paper aims at answering two fundamental questions: how area spectral efficiency (ASE) behaves with different system parameters; how to design an energy-efficient network. Based on stochastic geometry, we obtain the expression and a tight lower-bound for ASE of Poisson distributed networks considering multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) transmission. With the help of the lower-bound, some interesting results are observed. These results are validated via numerical results for the original expression. We find that ASE can be viewed as a concave function with respect to the number of antennas and active users. For the purpose of maximizing ASE, we demonstrate that the optimal number of active users is a fixed portion of the number of antennas. With optimal number of active users, we observe that ASE increases linearly with the number of antennas. Another work of this paper is joint optimization of the base station (BS) density, the number of antennas and active users to minimize the network energy consumption. It is discovered that the optimal combination of the number of antennas and active users is the solution that maximizes the energy-efficiency. Besides the optimal algorithm, we propose a suboptimal algorithm to reduce the computational complexity, which can achieve near optimal performance.

Stochastic Geometry Analysis of Multi-Antenna Two-Tier Cellular Networks

In this paper, we study the key properties of multi-antenna two-tier networks under different system configurations. Based on stochastic geometry, we derive the expressions and approximations for the users' average data rate. Through the more tractable approximations, the theoretical analysis can be greatly simplified. We find that the differences in density and transmit power between two tiers, together with range expansion bias significantly affect the users' data rate. Besides, for the purpose of area spectral efficiency (ASE) maximization, we find that the optimal number of active users for each tier is approximately fixed portion of the sum of the number of antennas plus one. Interestingly, the optimal settings are insensitive to different configurations between two tiers. Last but not the least, if the number of antennas of macro base stations (MBSs) is sufficiently larger than that of small cell base stations (SBSs), we find that range expansion will improve ASE.

Analysis and Optimization of Cellular Network with Burst Traffic

In this paper, we analyze the performance of cellular networks and study the optimal base station (BS) density to reduce the network power consumption. In contrast to previous works with similar purpose, we consider Poisson traffic for users' traffic model. In such situation, each BS can be viewed as M/G/1 queuing model. Based on theory of stochastic geometry, we analyze users' signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and obtain the average transmission time of each packet. While most of the previous works on SINR analysis in academia considered full buffer traffic, our analysis provides a basic framework to estimate the performance of cellular networks with burst traffic. We find that the users' SINR depends on the average transmission probability of BSs, which is defined by a nonlinear equation. As it is difficult to obtain the closed-form solution, we solve this nonlinear equation by bisection method. Besides, we formulate the optimization problem to minimize the area power consumption. An iteration algorithm is proposed to derive the local optimal BS density, and the numerical result shows that the proposed algorithm can converge to the global optimal BS density. At the end, the impact of BS density on users' SINR and average packet delay will be discussed.

Energy Efficient Coordinated Beamforming for Multi-cell MISO Systems

In this paper, we investigate the optimal energy efficient coordinated beamforming in multi-cell multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems with $K$ multiple-antenna base stations (BS) and $K$ single-antenna mobile stations (MS), where each BS sends information to its own intended MS with cooperatively designed transmit beamforming. We assume single user detection at the MS by treating the interference as noise. By taking into account a realistic power model at the BS, we characterize the Pareto boundary of the achievable energy efficiency (EE) region of the $K$ links, where the EE of each link is defined as the achievable data rate at the MS divided by the total power consumption at the BS. Since the EE of each link is non-cancave (which is a non-concave function over an affine function), characterizing this boundary is difficult. To meet this challenge, we relate this multi-cell MISO system to cognitive radio (CR) MISO channels by applying the concept of interference temperature (IT), and accordingly transform the EE boundary characterization problem into a set of fractional concave programming problems. Then, we apply the fractional concave programming technique to solve these fractional concave problems, and correspondingly give a parametrization for the EE boundary in terms of IT levels. Based on this characterization, we further present a decentralized algorithm to implement the multi-cell coordinated beamforming, which is shown by simulations to achieve the EE Pareto boundary.

An Energy Efficient Semi-static Power Control and Link Adaptation Scheme in UMTS HSDPA

High speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) has been successfully applied in commercial systems and improves user experience significantly. However, it incurs substantial energy consumption. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing a novel energy efficient semi-static power control and link adaptation scheme in HSDPA. Through estimating the EE under different modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) and corresponding transmit power, the proposed scheme can determine the most energy efficient MCS level and transmit power at the Node B. And then the Node B configure the optimal MCS level and transmit power. In order to decrease the signaling overhead caused by the configuration, a dual trigger mechanism is employed. After that, we extend the proposed scheme to the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) scenarios. Simulation results confirm the significant EE improvement of our proposed scheme. Finally, we give a discussion on the potential EE gain and challenge of the energy efficient mode switching between single input multiple output (SIMO) and MIMO configuration in HSDPA.

Energy Efficiency Scaling Law for MIMO Broadcasting Channels

This letter investigates the energy efficiency (EE) scaling law for the broadcasting channels (BC) with many users, in which the non-ideal transmit independent power consumption is taken into account. We first consider the single antenna case with $K$ users, and derive that the EE scales as $\frac{\log_2 \ln K}α$ when $α> 0$ and $\log_2 K$ when $α= 0$, where $α$ is the normalized transmit independent power. After that, we extend it to the general MIMO BC case with a $M$-antenna transmitter and $K$ users each with $N$ antennas. The scaling law becomes $\frac{M \log_2 \ln NK}α$ when $α> 0$ and $ \log_2 NK$ when $α= 0$.

Energy Efficient Iterative Waterfilling for the MIMO Broadcasting Channels

Optimizing energy efficiency (EE) for the MIMO broadcasting channels (BC) is considered in this paper, where a practical power model is taken into account. Although the EE of the MIMO BC is non-concave, we reformulate it as a quasiconcave function based on the uplink-downlink duality. After that, an energy efficient iterative waterfilling scheme is proposed based on the block-coordinate ascent algorithm to obtain the optimal transmission policy efficiently, and the solution is proved to be convergent. Through simulations, we validate the efficiency of the proposed scheme and discuss the system parameters' effect on the EE.

Improving Energy Efficiency Through Multimode Transmission in the Downlink MIMO Systems

Adaptively adjusting system parameters including bandwidth, transmit power and mode to maximize the "Bits per-Joule" energy efficiency (BPJ-EE) in the downlink MIMO systems with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is considered in this paper. By mode we refer to choice of transmission schemes i.e. singular value decomposition (SVD) or block diagonalization (BD), active transmit/receive antenna number and active user number. We derive optimal bandwidth and transmit power for each dedicated mode at first. During the derivation, accurate capacity estimation strategies are proposed to cope with the imperfect CSIT caused capacity prediction problem. Then, an ergodic capacity based mode switching strategy is proposed to further improve the BPJ-EE, which provides insights on the preferred mode under given scenarios. Mode switching compromises different power parts, exploits the tradeoff between the multiplexing gain and the imperfect CSIT caused inter-user interference, improves the BPJ-EE significantly.
