MedVIGIL: Evaluating Trustworthy Medical VLMs Under Broken Visual Evidence

Medical vision--language models (VLMs) are usually evaluated on intact image--question pairs, but trustworthy clinical use requires a stronger property: a model must recognise when the evidential basis for an answer has failed. We study this through silent failures under perturbed evidence, where a vision-required medical question is paired with a false premise, wording perturbation, knowledge-only rewrite, or ROI-corrupted image, yet the model returns a fluent non-refusal answer. We introduce medvigil, a 300-case evaluation suite drawn from four public medical VQA sources, supervised end to end by four board-certified radiologists: every gold answer, refusal option, candidate-answer set, paraphrase, false-premise trap, ROI box, and clinical risk tier is clinician-authored. Two attending radiologists annotate every case in parallel, a senior radiologist consolidates the released manifest, and a separate fourth radiologist independent of construction answers every probe to provide the human reference baseline. The release contains 2{,}556 MCQ probes, 240 counterfactual triplets, physician-adjudicated risk-tier and answerability flags, ROI boxes, and a paired open-ended variant. We report seven correctness-conditioned audit metrics that summarise into the medvigil Composite Score (MCS), and audit 16 vision-capable models plus two text-only baselines. The independent radiologist scores MCS 83.3 at silent-failure rate 5.8%, leaving a 14.1-point composite headroom above the strongest audited model (Claude Opus 4.7 at 69.2). The benchmark and evaluation harness are publicly released.

Local Slot Attention for Vision-and-Language Navigation

Vision-and-language navigation (VLN), a frontier study aiming to pave the way for general-purpose robots, has been a hot topic in the computer vision and natural language processing community. The VLN task requires an agent to navigate to a goal location following natural language instructions in unfamiliar environments. Recently, transformer-based models have gained significant improvements on the VLN task. Since the attention mechanism in the transformer architecture can better integrate inter- and intra-modal information of vision and language. However, there exist two problems in current transformer-based models. 1) The models process each view independently without taking the integrity of the objects into account. 2) During the self-attention operation in the visual modality, the views that are spatially distant can be inter-weaved with each other without explicit restriction. This kind of mixing may introduce extra noise instead of useful information. To address these issues, we propose 1) A slot-attention based module to incorporate information from segmentation of the same object. 2) A local attention mask mechanism to limit the visual attention span. The proposed modules can be easily plugged into any VLN architecture and we use the Recurrent VLN-Bert as our base model. Experiments on the R2R dataset show that our model has achieved the state-of-the-art results.

On Limit Measures and Their Supports for Stochastic Ordinary Differential Equations

This paper studies limit measures of stationary measures of stochastic ordinary differential equations on the Euclidean space and tries to determine which invariant measures of an unperturbed system will survive. Under the assumption for SODEs to admit the Freidlin-Wentzell or Dembo-Zeitouni large deviations principle with weaker compactness condition, we prove that limit measures are concentrated away from repellers which are topologically transitive, or equivalent classes, or admit Lebesgue measure zero. We also preclude concentrations of limit measures on acyclic saddle or trap chains. This illustrates that limit measures are concentrated on Liapunov stable compact invariant sets. Applications are made to the Morse-Smale systems, the Axiom A systems including structural stability systems and separated star systems, the gradient or gradient-like systems, those systems possessing the Poincare-Bendixson property with a finite number of limit sets to obtain that limit measures live on Liapunov stable critical elements, Liapunov stable basic sets, Liapunov stable equilibria and Liapunov stable limit sets including equilibria, limit cycles and saddle or trap cycles, respectively. A number of nontrivial examples admitting a unique limit measure are provided, which include monostable, multistable systems and those possessing infinite equivalent classes.

High-performance Coherent Optical Modulators based on Thin-film Lithium Niobate Platform

The coherent transmission technology using digital signal processing and advanced modulation formats, is bringing networks closer to the theoretical capacity limit of optical fibres, the Shannon limit. The in-phase quadrature electro-optic modulator that encodes information on both the amplitude and the phase of light, is one of the underpinning devices for the coherent transmission technology. Ideally, such modulator should feature low loss, low drive voltage, large bandwidth, low chirp and compact footprint. However, these requirements have been only met on separate occasions. Here, we demonstrate integrated thin-film lithium niobate in-phase/quadrature modulators that fulfil these requirements simultaneously. The presented devices exhibit greatly improved overall performance (half-wave voltage, bandwidth and optical loss) over traditional lithium niobate counterparts, and support modulation data rate up to 320 Gbit s-1. Our devices pave new routes for future high-speed, energy-efficient, and cost-effective communication networks.

A Polarization-insensitive and High-speed Electro-optic Switch Based on a Hybrid Silicon and Lithium Niobate Platform

We propose and demonstrate a polarization-insensitive and high speed optical switch unit based on a silicon and lithium niobate hybrid integration platform. The presented device exhibits a sub nano-second switching time, low drive voltages of 4.97 V, and low power dissipation due to electrostatic operation. The measured polarization dependence loss was lower than 0.8 dB. The demonstrated optical switch could provide as a building block for polarization-insensitive and high-speed optical matrix switches.

Lithium Niobate Michelson Interferometer Modulator on Silicon-On-Insulator Platform

We propose and demonstrate a hybrid silicon and lithium niobate Michelson Interferometer Modulator (MIM) with enhanced modulation efficiency compared to a Mach-Zehnder modulator. The modulator is based on seamless integration of a high-contrast waveguide based on lithium niobate-a popular modulator material-with compact, low-loss silicon circuitry. The present device demonstrates a modulation efficiency as high as 1.2 Vcm and a low insertion loss of 3.3 dB. The 3dB electro-optic bandwidth is approximately 17.5 GHz. The optical eye diagrams, operating at 32 Gbit/s and 40 Gbit/s, with measured dynamic extinction ratios at 8 dB and 6.6 dB respectively. The present device avoids absorption loss and nonlinearity in conventional silicon modulators and demonstrates highest modulation efficiency in LN modulators, showing potential in future optical interconnects.

Telecommunication wavelength confined Tamm plasmon structures containing InAs/GaAs quantum dot emitters at room temperature

We experimentally demonstrate gold microdisc structures that produce confined Tamm plasmons (CTPs), interface modes between a metal layer and a distributed Bragg reflector, resonant around 1.3 μm. Quantum dots grown within the structures show an order of magnitude increase in the photoluminescence emitted at room temperature. Varying the disc diameter, we show spectral tuning of the resonance and measure the dispersion relation as evidence of mode confinement. The simplicity of fabrication and tuneability of these structures make CTPs an ideal platform for making scalable telecom devices based on quantum dots.

A Selective Metasurface Absorber with An Amorphous Carbon Interlayer for Solar Thermal Applications

This paper presents fabrication, measurement and modelling results for a metal-dielectric-metal metasurface absorber for solar thermal applications. The structure uses amorphous carbon as an inter-layer between thin gold films with the upper film patterned with a 2D periodic array using focused ion beam etching. The patterned has been optimised to give high absorptance from 400-1200nm and low absorptance above this wavelength range to minimise thermal radiation and hence obtain higher temperature performance. Wide angle absorptance results are shown and detailed modelling of a realistic nanostructured upper layer results in excellent agreement between measured and modelled results. The use of gold in this paper is a first step towards a high temperature metasurface where gold can be replaced by other refractory metals such as tungsten or chrome.

On Limiting Behavior of Stationary Measures for Stochastic Evolution Systems with Small Noise Intensity

The limiting behavior of stochastic evolution processes with small noise intensity $ε$ is investigated in distribution-based approach. Let $μ^ε$ be stationary measure for stochastic process $X^ε$ with small $ε$ and $X^{0}$ be a semiflow on a Polish space. Assume that $\{μ^ε: 0<ε\leqε_0\}$ is tight. Then all their limits in weak sense are $X^0-$invariant and their supports are contained in Birkhoff center of $X^0$. Applications are made to various stochastic evolution systems, including stochastic ordinary differential equations, stochastic partial differential equations, stochastic functional differential equations driven by Brownian motion or Lévy process.

The Decomposition Formula and Stationary Measures for Stochastic Lotka-Volterra Systems with Applications to Turbulent Convection

Motivated by the work of Busse et al. [6] on turbulent convection in a rotating layer, we exploit the long-run behavior for stochastic Lotka-Volterra (LV) systems both in pull-back trajectory and in stationary measure. It is proved stochastic decomposition formula describing the relation between solutions of stochastic and deterministic LV systems and stochastic Logistic equation. By virtue of this formula, it is verified that every pull-back omega limit set is an omega limit set for deterministic LV systems multiplied by the random equilibrium of the stochastic Logistic equation. This formula is used to derive the existence of a stationary measure, its support and ergodicity. We prove the tightness for the set of stationary measures and the invariance for their weak limits as the noise intensity vanishes, whose supports are contained in the Birkhoff center. The developed theory is successfully utilized to completely classify three dimensional competitive stochastic LV systems into $37$ classes. Time average probability measures weakly converge to an ergodic stationary measure on the attracting domain of an omega limit set in all classes except class 27 c). Among them there are two classes possessing a continuum of random closed orbits and ergodic stationary measures supported in cone surfaces, which weakly converge to the Haar measures of periodic orbits as the noise intensity vanishes. In the exceptional class, almost every pull-back trajectory cyclically oscillates around the boundary of the stochastic carrying simplex characterized by three unstable stationary solutions. The limit for the time average probability measures is neither unique nor ergodic. These are subject to turbulent characteristics.

Evidence of near-infrared partial photonic bandgap in polymeric rod-connected diamond structures

We present the simulation, fabrication, and optical characterization of low-index polymeric rod-connected diamond (RCD) structures. Such complex three-dimensional photonic crystal structures are created via direct laser writing by two-photon polymerization. To our knowledge, this is the first measurement at near-infrared wavelengths, showing partial photonic bandgaps for this structure. We characterize structures in transmission and reflection using angular resolved Fourier image spectroscopy to visualize the band structure. Comparison of the numerical simulations of such structures with the experimentally measured data show good agreement for both P- and S-polarizations.

Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers

Harnessing the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of light is an appealing approach to developing photonic technologies for future applications in optical communications and high- dimensional Quantum Key Distributions (QKD). An outstanding challenge to the widespread uptake of the OAM resource is its efficient generation. We design a new device which can directly emit an OAM-carrying light beam. By fabricating micro-scale Spiral Phase Plates (SPPs) within the aperture of a Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSELs), the linearly polarized Gaussian beam emitted by the VCSEL is converted into a beam carrying specific OAM modes and their superposition states with high efficiency and high beam quality. The innovative OAM emitter opens a new horizon in the field of OAM-based optical and quantum communications, especially for short reach data interconnects and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).
