Towards Improved Proxy-based Deep Metric Learning via Data-Augmented Domain Adaptation

Deep Metric Learning (DML) plays an important role in modern computer vision research, where we learn a distance metric for a set of image representations. Recent DML techniques utilize the proxy to interact with the corresponding image samples in the embedding space. However, existing proxy-based DML methods focus on learning individual proxy-to-sample distance while the overall distribution of samples and proxies lacks attention. In this paper, we present a novel proxy-based DML framework that focuses on aligning the sample and proxy distributions to improve the efficiency of proxy-based DML losses. Specifically, we propose the Data-Augmented Domain Adaptation (DADA) method to adapt the domain gap between the group of samples and proxies. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to leverage domain adaptation to boost the performance of proxy-based DML. We show that our method can be easily plugged into existing proxy-based DML losses. Our experiments on benchmarks, including the popular CUB-200-2011, CARS196, Stanford Online Products, and In-Shop Clothes Retrieval, show that our learning algorithm significantly improves the existing proxy losses and achieves superior results compared to the existing methods.

Vertex operator superalgebras and 16-fold way

Let $V$ be a vertex operator superalgebra with the natural order 2 automorphism $σ$. Under suitable conditions on $V$, the $σ$-fixed subspace $V_{\bar 0}$ is a vertex operator algebra and the category $C_{V_{\bar 0}}$ of $V_{\bar 0}$-modules is modular tensor category. In this paper, we prove that $C_{V_{\bar 0}}$ is a fermionic modular tensor category and the Müger centralizer $C_{V_{\bar 0}}^0$ of the fermion in $C_{V_{\bar 0}}$ is generated by the irreducible $V_{\bar 0}$-submodules of the $V$-modules. In particular, $C_{V_{\bar 0}}^0$ is a super-modular tensor category and $C_{V_{\bar 0}}$ is a minimal modular extension of $C_{V_{\bar 0}}^0$. We provide a construction of a vertex operator $V^l$ for each positive integer $l$ such that $C_{V^l_{\bar 0}}$ is minimal modular extension of $C_{V_{\bar 0}}^0$. We prove that these modular tensor categories $C_{V^l_{\bar 0}}$ are uniquely determined, up to equivalence, by the congruence class of $l$ modulo 16.

Congruence Property in Orbifold Theory

Let $V$ be a rational, selfdual, $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra of CFT type, and $G$ a finite automorphism group of $V.$ It is proved that the kernel of the representation of the modular group on twisted conformal blocks associated to $V$ and $G$ is a congruence subgroup. In particular, the $q$-character of each irreducible twisted module is a modular function on the same congruence subgroup. In the case $V$ is the Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman's moonshine vertex operator algebra and $G$ is the monster simple group, the generalized McKay-Thompson series associated to any commuting pair in the monster group is a modular function.

Modular $A_n(V)$ theory

A series of associative algebras $A_n(V)$ for a vertex operator algebra $V$ over an arbitrary algebraically closed field and nonnegative integers $n$ are constructed such that there is a one to one correspondence between irreducible $A_n(V)$-modules which are not $A_{n-1}(V)$ modules and irreducible $V$-modules. Moreover, $V$ is rational if and only if $A_n(V)$ is semisimple for all $n.$ In particular, the homogeneous subspaces of any irreducible $V$-module are finite dimensional for rational vertex operator algebra $V.$
