Level-crossing and modal structure in microdroplet resonators

We fabricate a liquid-core liquid-clad microcavity that is coupled to a standard tapered fiber, and then experimentally map the whispering-gallery modes of this droplet resonator. The shape of our resonator is similar to a thin prolate spheroid, which makes space for many high-order transverse modes, suggesting that some of them will share the same resonance frequency. Indeed, we experimentally observe that more than half of the droplet's modes have a sibling having the same frequency (to within linewidth) and therefore exhibiting a standing interference-pattern.

Ab initio description of nonlinear dynamics of coupled microdisk resonators with application to self-trapping dynamics

Ab initio approach is used to describe the time evolution of the amplitudes of whispering gallery modes in a system of coupled microdisk resonators with Kerr nonlinearity. It is shown that this system demonstrates a transition between Josephson-like nonlinear oscillations and self-trapping behavior. Manifestation of this transition in the dynamics of radiative losses is studied.

Diagrammatic semiclassical laser theory

We derive semiclassical laser equations valid in all orders of nonlinearity. With the help of a diagrammatic representation, the perturbation series in powers of electric field can be resummed in terms of a certain class of diagrams. The resummation makes it possible to take into account a weak effect of population pulsations in a controlled way, while treating the nonlinearity exactly. The proposed laser theory reproduces the all-order nonlinear equations in the approximation of constant population inversion and the third-order equations with population-pulsation terms, as special cases. The theory can be applied to arbitrarily open and irregular lasers, such as random lasers.

Recent developments in the theory of multimode random lasers

We review recent extensions of semiclassical multimode laser theory to open systems with overlapping resonances and inhomogeneous refractive index. An essential ingredient of the theory are biorthogonal quasimodes that describe field decay in an open passive system and are used as a basis for lasing modes. We discuss applications of the semiclassical theory, as well as other experimental and numerical results related to random lasing with mode competition.

Luminescence Properties of a Fibonacci Photonic Quasicrystal

We report the realization of an active one-dimensional Fibonacci photonic quasi-crystal via spin coating. Manipulation of the luminescence properties of an organic dye embedded in the quasi-crystal is presented and compared to theoretical simulations. The luminescence occurs via the pseudo-bandedge mode and follows the dispersion properties of the Fibonacci crystal. Time resolved luminescence measurement of the active structure shows faster spontaneous emission rate, indicating the effect of the large photon densities available at the bandedge due to the presence of critically localized states. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical calculations.
