Circle embeddings with restrictions on Fourier coefficients

This paper continues the investigation of the relation between the geometry of a circle embedding and the values of its Fourier coefficients. First, we answer a question of Kovalev and Yang concerning the support of the Fourier transform of a starlike embedding. An important special case of circle embeddings are homeomorphisms of the circle onto itself. Under a one-sided bound on the Fourier support, such homeomorphisms are rational functions related to Blaschke products. We study the structure of rational circle homeomorphisms and show that they form a connected set in the uniform topology.

Near-isometric duality of Hardy norms with applications to harmonic mappings

Hardy spaces in the complex plane and in higher dimensions have natural finite-dimensional subspaces formed by polynomials or by linear maps. We use the restriction of Hardy norms to such subspaces to describe the set of possible derivatives of harmonic self-maps of a ball, providing a version of the Schwarz lemma for harmonic maps. These restricted Hardy norms display unexpected near-isometric duality between the exponents 1 and 4, which we use to give an explicit form of harmonic Schwarz lemma.

Approximation up to the boundary of homeomorphisms of finite Dirichlet energy

Let X and Y be planar Jordan domains of the same finite connectivity, Y being inner chordarc regular (such are Lipschitz domains). Every homeomorphism h:X->Y in the Sobolev space $W^{1,2}$ extends to a continuous map between closed domains. We prove that there exist homeomorphisms between closed domains which converge to h uniformly and in $W^{1,2}$. The problem of approximation of Sobolev homeomorphisms, raised by J. M. Ball and L. C. Evans, is deeply rooted in a study of energy-minimal deformations in nonlinear elasticity. The new feature of our main result is that approximation takes place also on the boundary, where the original map need not be a homeomorphism.

The Hopf-Laplace equation: harmonicity and regularity

The central theme in this paper is the Hopf-Laplace equation, which represents stationary solutions with respect to the inner variation of the Dirichlet integral. Among such solutions are harmonic maps. Nevertheless, minimization of the Dirichlet energy among homeomorphisms often leads to mappings which are neither harmonic nor homeomorphisms. We prove that such mappings are harmonic outside of a singular set with small image. On the singular set they are locally Lipschitz, but not necessarily differentiable.

Doubly connected minimal surfaces and extremal harmonic mappings

The concept of a conformal deformation has two natural extensions: quasiconformal and harmonic mappings. Both classes do not preserve the conformal type of the domain, however they cannot change it in an arbitrary way. Doubly connected domains are where one first observes nontrivial conformal invariants. Herbert Groetzsch and Johannes C. C. Nitsche addressed this issue for quasiconformal and harmonic mappings, respectively. Combining these concepts we obtain sharp estimates for quasiconformal harmonic mappings between doubly connected domains. We then apply our results to the Cauchy problem for minimal surfaces, also known as the Bjorling problem. Specifically, we obtain a sharp estimate of the modulus of a doubly connected minimal surface that evolves from its inner boundary with a given initial slope.

Existence of energy-minimal diffeomorphisms between doubly connected domains

The paper establishes the existence of homeomorphisms between two planar domains that minimize the Dirichlet energy. Specifically, among all homeomorphisms f : R -> R* between bounded doubly connected domains such that Mod (R) < Mod (R*) there exists, unique up to conformal authomorphisms of R, an energy-minimal diffeomorphism. No boundary conditions are imposed on f. Although any energy-minimal diffeomorphism is harmonic, our results underline the major difference between the existence of harmonic diffeomorphisms and the existence of the energy-minimal diffeomorphisms. The existence of globally invertible energy-minimal mappings is of primary pursuit in the mathematical models of nonlinear elasticity and is also of interest in computer graphics.

Projections and idempotents with fixed diagonal and the homotopy problem for unit tight frames

We investigate the topological and metric structure of the set of idempotent operators and projections which have prescribed diagonal entries with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space. As an application, we settle some cases of conjectures of Larson, Dykema, and Strawn on the connectedness of the set of unit-norm tight frames.

Harmonic mappings of an annulus, Nitsche conjecture and its generalizations

As long ago as 1962 Nitsche conjectured that a harmonic homeomorphism $h \colon A(r,R) \to A(r_*, R_*)$ between planar annuli exists if and only if $\frac{R_*}{r_*} \ge {1/2} (\frac{R}{r} + \frac{r}{R})$. We prove this conjecture when the domain annulus is not too wide; explicitly, when $\log \frac{R}{r} \le {3/2}$. For general $A(r,R)$ the conjecture is proved under additional assumption that either $h$ or its normal derivative have vanishing average on the inner boundary circle. This is the case for the critical Nitsche mapping which yields equality in the above inequality. The Nitsche mapping represents so-called free evolution of circles of the annulus $A(r,R)$. It will be shown on the other hand that forced harmonic evolution results in greater ratio $\frac{R_*}{r_*}$. To this end, we introduce the underlying differential operators for the circular means of the forced evolution and use them to obtain sharp lower bounds of $\frac{R_*}{r_*}$.

The Nitsche conjecture

The conjecture in question concerns the existence of a harmonic homeomorphism between circular annuli A(r,R) and A(r*,R*), and is motivated in part by the existence problem for doubly-connected minimal surfaces with prescribed boundary. In 1962 J.C.C. Nitsche observed that the image annulus cannot be too thin, but it can be arbitrarily thick (even a punctured disk). Then he conjectured that for such a mapping to exist we must have the following inequality, now known as the Nitsche bound: R*/r* is greater than or equal to (R/r+r/R)/2. In this paper we give an affirmative answer to his conjecture. As a corollary, we find that among all minimal graphs over given annulus the upper slab of catenoid has the greatest conformal modulus.
