Branching Particle Systems with Mutually Catalytic Interactions

We study a continuous time Mutually Catalytic Branching model on the $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$. The model describes the behavior of two different populations of particles, performing random walk on the lattice in the presence of branching, that is, each particle dies at a certain rate and is replaced by a random number of offspring. The branching rate of a particle in one population is proportional to the number of particles of another population at the same site. We study the long time behavior for this model, in particular, coexistence and non-coexistence of two populations in the long run. Finally, we construct a sequence of renormalized processes and use duality techniques to investigate its limiting behavior.

Well-posedness of stochastic heat equation with distributional drift and skew stochastic heat equation

We study stochastic reaction--diffusion equation $$ \partial_tu_t(x)=\frac12 \partial^2_{xx}u_t(x)+b(u_t(x))+\dot{W}_{t}(x), \quad t>0,\, x\in D $$ where $b$ is a generalized function in the Besov space $\mathcal{B}^β_{q,\infty}({\mathbb R})$, $D\subset{\mathbb R}$ and $\dot W$ is a space-time white noise on ${\mathbb R}_+\times D$. We introduce a notion of a solution to this equation and obtain existence and uniqueness of a strong solution whenever $β-1/q\ge-1$, $β>-1$ and $q\in[1,\infty]$. This class includes equations with $b$ being measures, in particular, $b=δ_0$ which corresponds to the skewed stochastic heat equation. For $β-1/q > -3/2$, we obtain existence of a weak solution. Our results extend the work of Bass and Chen (2001) to the framework of stochastic partial differential equations and generalizes the results of Gyöngy and Pardoux (1993) to distributional drifts. To establish these results, we exploit the regularization effect of the white noise through a new strategy based on the stochastic sewing lemma introduced in Lê~(2020).

Regularization by noise and flows of solutions for a stochastic heat equation

Motivated by the regularization by noise phenomenon for SDEs we prove existence and uniqueness of the flow of solutions for the non-Lipschitz stochastic heat equation $$\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=\frac12\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial z^2} + b(u(t,z)) + \dot{W}(t,z), $$ where $\dot W$ is a space-time white noise on $\mathbb{R}_+\times\mathbb{R}$ and $b$ is a bounded measurable function on $\mathbb{R}$. As a byproduct of our proof we also establish the so-called path--by--path uniqueness for any initial condition in a certain class on the same set of probability one. This extends recent results of Davie (2007) to the context of stochastic partial differential equations.

Singularities of stable super-Brownian motion

We investigate in this work the spectrum of singularities of super-Brownian motion with stable branching. The main purpose is to provide a uniform description of the latter in high dimension $d\geq\tfrac{2}{γ-1}$, presenting the singularities existing at every time t and characterising as well the set of random times at which singularities of higher order appear. In lower dimensions, we give a partial description of the singularities which complement the recent study of the density by Mytnik and Wachtel.

On the boundary of the support of super-Brownian motion: with appendices

We study the density X(t,x) of one-dimensional super-Brownian motion and find the asymptotic behaviour of P(0<X(t,x)<a) as a approaches 0, as well as the Hausdorff dimension of the boundary of the support of X(t). The answers are in terms of the lead eigenvalue of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck generator with a particular killing term. This work is motivated in part by questions of pathwise uniqueness for associated stochastic partial differential equations.

Regularity and irregularity of superprocesses with $(1+β)$-stable branching mechanism

We would like to give an overview of results on regularity, or better to say "irregularity", properties of densities at fixed times of super-Brownian motion with $(1+β)$-stable branching for $β<1$. First, the following dichotomy for the density is shown: it is continuous in the dimension $d=1$ and locally unbounded in all higher dimensions where it exists. Then in $d=1$ we determine pointwise and local Hölder exponents of the density, and calculate the multifractal spectrum corresponding to pointwise Hölder exponents.

Stochastic Differential Equation for Brox Diffusion

This paper studies the weak and strong solutions to the stochastic differential equation $ dX(t)=-\frac12 \dot W(X(t))dt+d\mathcal{B}(t)$, where $(\mathcal{B}(t), t\ge 0)$ is a standard Brownian motion and $W(x)$ is a two sided Brownian motion, independent of $\mathcal{B}$. It is shown that the Itô-McKean representation associated with any Brownian motion (independent of $W$) is a weak solution to the above equation. It is also shown that there exists a unique strong solution to the equation. Itô calculus for the solution is developed. For dealing with the singularity of drift term $\int_0^T \dot W(X(t))dt$, the main idea is to use the concept of local time together with the polygonal approximation $W_π$. Some new results on the local time of Brownian motion needed in our proof are established.

Nonuniqueness for a parabolic SPDE with $\frac{3}{4}-\varepsilon$-Hölder diffusion coefficients

Motivated by Girsanov's nonuniqueness examples for SDEs, we prove nonuniqueness for the parabolic stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) \[\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=\fracΔ{2}u(t,x) +\bigl|u(t,x)\bigr|^γ\dot{W}(t,x),\qquad u(0,x)=0.\] Here $\dot{W}$ is a space-time white noise on ${\mathbb {R}}_+\times {\mathbb {R}}$. More precisely, we show the above stochastic PDE has a nonzero solution for $0<γ<3/4$. Since $u(t,x)=0$ solves the equation, it follows that solutions are neither unique in law nor pathwise unique. An analogue of Yamada-Watanabe's famous theorem for SDEs was recently shown in Mytnik and Perkins [Probab. Theory Related Fields 149 (2011) 1-96] for SPDE's by establishing pathwise uniqueness of solutions to \[\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=\fracΔ{2}u(t,x)+σ\bigl(u(t,x)\bigr)\dot{W}(t,x)\] if $σ$ is Hölder continuous of index $γ>3/4$. Hence our examples show this result is essentially sharp. The situation for the above class of parabolic SPDE's is therefore similar to their finite dimensional counterparts, but with the index $3/4$ in place of $1/2$. The case $γ=1/2$ of the first equation above is particularly interesting as it arises as the scaling limit of the signed mass for a system of annihilating critical branching random walks.

Asymptotic behaviour of the critical value for the contact process with rapid stirring

We study the behaviour of the contact process with rapid stirring on the lattice $\Z^d$ in dimensions $d\geq 3$. This process was studied earlier by Konno and Katori, who proved results for the speed of convergence of the critical value as the rate of stirring approaches infinity. %Katori has improved the result of Katori in $d\geq 3$ and has produced an interval where the critical value must lie. In this article we improve the results of Konno and Kattori and establish the sharp asymptotics of the critical value in dimensions $d\geq 3$.

On Exceptional Times for generalized Fleming-Viot Processes with Mutations

If $\mathbf Y$ is a standard Fleming-Viot process with constant mutation rate (in the infinitely many sites model) then it is well known that for each $t>0$ the measure $\mathbf Y_t$ is purely atomic with infinitely many atoms. However, Schmuland proved that there is a critical value for the mutation rate under which almost surely there are exceptional times at which $\mathbf Y$ is a finite sum of weighted Dirac masses. In the present work we discuss the existence of such exceptional times for the generalized Fleming-Viot processes. In the case of Beta-Fleming-Viot processes with index $α\in\,]1,2[$ we show that - irrespectively of the mutation rate and $α$ - the number of atoms is almost surely always infinite. The proof combines a Pitman-Yor type representation with a disintegration formula, Lamperti's transformation for self-similar processes and covering results for Poisson point processes.

Infinite rate mutually catalytic branching in infinitely many colonies: The longtime behavior

Consider the infinite rate mutually catalytic branching process (IMUB) constructed in [Infinite rate mutually catalytic branching in infinitely many colonies. Construction, characterization and convergence (2008) Preprint] and [Ann. Probab. 38 (2010) 479-497]. For finite initial conditions, we show that only one type survives in the long run if the interaction kernel is recurrent. On the other hand, under a slightly stronger condition than transience, we show that both types can coexist.

Hitting properties and non-uniqueness for SDE driven by stable processes

We study a class of self-similar jump type SDEs driven by Hölder-continuous drift and noise coefficients. Using the Lamperti transformation for positive self-similar Markov processes we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for almost sure extinction in finite time. We then show that for certain parameters pathwise uniqueness holds in a restricted sense, namely among solutions spending a Lebesgue-negligible amount of time at 0. A direct power transformation plays a key role.

Infinite rate mutually catalytic branching in infinitely many colonies. Construction, characterization and convergence

We construct a mutually catalytic branching process on a countable site space with infinite "branching rate". The finite rate mutually catalytic model, in which the rate of branching of one population at a site is proportional to the mass of the other population at that site, was introduced by Dawson and Perkins in [DP98]. We show that our model is the limit for a class of models and in particular for the Dawson-Perkins model as the rate of branching goes to infinity. Our process is characterized as the unique solution to a martingale problem. We also give a characterization of the process as a weak solution of an infinite system of stochastic integral equations driven by a Poisson noise.

Longtime Behavior for Mutually Catalytic Branching with Negative Correlations

In several examples, dualities for interacting diffusion and particle systems permit the study of the longtime behavior of solutions. A particularly difficult model in which many techniques collapse is a two-type model with mutually catalytic interaction introduced by Dawson/Perkins for which they proved under some assumptions a dichotomy between extinction and coexistence directly from the defining equations. In the present article we show how to prove a precise dichotomy for a related model with negatively correlated noises. The proof uses moment bounds on exit-times of correlated Brownian motions from the first quadrant and explicit second moment calculations. Since the uniform integrability bound is independent of the branching rate our proof can be extended to infinite branching rate processes.

Mutually Catalytic Branching Processes on the Lattice and Voter Processes with Strength of Opinion

Since the seminal work of Dawson and Perkins, mutually catalytic versions of super-processes have been studied frequently. In this article we combine two approaches extending their ideas: the approach of adding correlations to the driving noise of the system is combined with the approach of obtaining new processes by letting the branching rate tend to infinity. We introduce infinite rate symbiotic branching processes which surprisingly can be interpreted as generalized voter processes with additional strength of opinions. Since many of the arguments go along the lines of known proofs this article is written as a review article.

Sample Path Properties of Volterra Processes

We consider the regularity of sample paths of Volterra processes. These processes are defined as stochastic integrals $$ M(t)=\int_{0}^{t}F(t,r)dX(r), \ \ t \in \mathds{R}_{+}, $$ where $X$ is a semimartingale and $F$ is a deterministic real-valued function. We derive the information on the modulus of continuity for these processes under regularity assumptions on the function $F$ and show that $M(t)$ has "worst" regularity properties at times of jumps of $X(t)$. We apply our results to obtain the optimal Hölder exponent for fractional Lévy processes.

Infinite rate mutually catalytic branching

Consider the mutually catalytic branching process with finite branching rate $γ$. We show that as $γ\to\infty$, this process converges in finite-dimensional distributions (in time) to a certain discontinuous process. We give descriptions of this process in terms of its semigroup in terms of the infinitesimal generator and as the solution of a martingale problem. We also give a strong construction in terms of a planar Brownian motion from which we infer a path property of the process. This is the first paper in a series or three, wherein we also construct an interacting version of this process and study its long-time behavior.

Optimal local Hölder index for density states of superprocesses with $(1+β)$-branching mechanism

For $0<α\leq2$, a super-$α$-stable motion $X$ in $\mathsf{R}^d$ with branching of index $1+β\in(1,2)$ is considered. Fix arbitrary $t>0$. If $d<α/β$, a dichotomy for the density function of the measure $X_t$ holds: the density function is locally Hölder continuous if $d=1$ and $α>1+β$ but locally unbounded otherwise. Moreover, in the case of continuity, we determine the optimal local Hölder index.

The heat equation with multiplicative stable Lévy noise

We study the heat equation with a random potential term. The potential is a one-sided stable noise, with positive jumps, which does not depend on time. To avoid singularities, we define the equation in terms of a construction similar to the Skorokhod integral or Wick product. We give a criterion for existence based on the dimension of the space variable, and the parameter p of the stable noise. Our arguments are different for p<1 and p>1.
