Universality and identity ordering in heteropolymer coil-globule transition

The coil-globule transition of an energy polydisperse chain, a model heteropolymer system where the number of monomer species is as large as the total number of monomers, is studied by means of computer simulations. In this study, we systematically explore the consequences of having different functional form and variance of the energy distribution on the coil-globule transition in general. In particular, considering Gaussian (G) and uniform (U) distributions, the effect of varying polydispersity index, $δ$, on the transition temperature $θ^\ast$, chain size, internal structure and spatial organization of monomers in the globule, and kinetics of the folding are addressed. It is found that the transition temperature of the model heteropolymer is lower than that of the homopolymer counterpart, and $θ^\ast$ increases with $δ$ (both G and U) and $θ^\ast({\rm U}) < θ^\ast({\rm G})$ consistently. The results of our study suggest that $θ^\ast$ is governed by the most probable value (rather than the width) of the pair-wise energy distribution. Interestingly, the nature of the collapse transition turns out to be universal, i.e., when scaled properly (irrespective of the functional form and variance) all the swelling curves fall on a master curve and it is well described by the same scaling form of the homopolymer counterpart. However, following quenching, the transition from coil to globule is relatively fast for heteropolymer (with no significant difference between G and U systems, and no significant $δ$ dependence within the considered range). On the other hand, internal organization in the collapsed state, quantified through mean contact probability, show distinct scaling regimes. Also we observe segregation of monomers based on their identities which is more pronounced in the case of uniform distribution.

Energy polydisperse 2d Lennard-Jones fluid in presence of flow field

The behavior of energy polydisperse $2d$ Lennard-Jones fluid (in thin-film geometry) is studied subjected to linear flow field using molecular dynamics simulations. By considering neutral and selective substrates we systematically explore the effect of flow field on particle ordering as well as response of the system. It is shown that particle density profile, spatial organization as well as local particle identity ordering in the film are affected. Furthermore, we observe flow field induced melting associated with a decrease of effective interaction parameter, $\left< ε_i^{\rm eff} \right>$, which characterizes local neighborhood identity ordering. In terms of macroscopic response, the systems show both shear-thinning and shear-thickening behaviors, and shear-thinning exponent decreases with increasing temperature and eventually attains Netwonian fluid-like behavior at sufficiently high temperature. It is found that the qualitative behaviour of one component LJ-fluid and energy polydisperse fluid with neutral substrates are similar in many respects, while the one with selective substrate shows differences. In the case of energy polydisperse system, the effect of having different substrate types is significantly manifested in the density profile near the interface, $\left< ε_i^{\rm eff} \right>$, and in the viscosity. We have shown that, unlike one component fluid, it is possible to tune the macroscopic response by tuning substrate-fluid interaction in energy polydisperse fluids.

Pair interaction ordering in fluids with random interactions

We use molecular dynamics simulations in 2d to study multi-component fluid in the limiting case where {\it all the particles are different} (APD). The particles are assumed to interact via Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials, with identical size parameters but their pair interaction parameters are generated at random from a uniform or from a peaked distribution. We analyze both the global and the local properties of these systems at temperatures above the freezing transition and find that APD fluids relax into a non-random state characterized by clustering of particles according to the values of their pair interaction parameters (particle-identity ordering).

Particle dynamics in fluids with random interactions

We study the dynamics of particles in a multi-component 2d Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid in the limiting case where {\it all the particles are different} (APD). The equilibrium properties of this APD system were studied in our earlier work [J.~Chem.~Phys.~142, 051104]. We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the statistical properties of particle trajectories in a temperature range covering both normal and supercooled fluid states. We calculate the mean-square displacement as well as angle, displacement and waiting time distributions, and compare the results with those for one-component LJ fluid. As temperature is lowered, the dynamics of the APD system becomes increasingly complex, as the intrinsic difference between the particles is amplified by neighborhood identity ordering and by the heterogeneous structure of the supercooled state.
