Some remarks about the Link between the Fisher information and Landau or Landau-Fermi-Dirac entropy dissipation

We present in this work variants of existing estimates for the Landau or Landau-Fermi-Dirac entropy dissipation, in terms of Fisher information, in the hard potential case. The specificity of those variants is that the entropy is never used in the estimates (in order to control possible concentrations on a zero measure set). The proofs are significantly simplified with respect to previous papers on the subject

About the Landau-Fermi-Dirac equation with moderately soft potentials

We present in this document some essential properties of solutions to the homogeneous Landau-Fermi-Dirac equation for moderately soft potentials. Uniform in time estimates for statistical moments, $L^{p}$-norm generation and Sobolev regularity are shown using a combination of techniques that include recent developments concerning level set analysis in the spirit of De Giorgi and refined entropy-entropy dissipation functional inequalities for the Landau collision operator which are extended to the case in question here. As a consequence of the analysis, we prove algebraic relaxation of non degenerate distributions towards the Fermi-Dirac statistics under a weak non saturation condition for the initial datum. All quantitative estimates are uniform with respect to the quantum parameter. They therefore also hold for the classical limit, that is the Landau equation.

Trend to equilibrium for reaction-diffusion systems arising from complex balanced chemical reaction networks

The quantitative convergence to equilibrium for reaction-diffusion systems arising from complex balanced chemical reaction networks with mass action kinetics is studied by using the so-called entropy method. In the first part of the paper, by deriving explicitly the entropy dissipation, we show that for complex balanced systems without boundary equilibria, each trajectory converges exponentially fast to the unique complex balance equilibrium. Moreover, a constructive proof is proposed to explicitly estimate the rate of convergence in the special case of a cyclic reaction. In the second part of the paper, complex balanced systems with boundary equilibria are considered. We investigate two specific cases featuring two and three chemical substances respectively. In these cases, the boundary equilibria are shown to be unstable in some sense, so that exponential convergence to the unique strictly positive equilibrium can also be proven.

Asymptotic profile in selection-mutation equations: Gauss versus Cauchy distributions

In this paper, we study the asymptotic (large time) behavior of a selection-mutation-competition model for a population structured with respect to a phenotypic trait, when the rate of mutation is very small. We assume that the reproduction is asexual, and that the mutations can be described by a linear integral operator. We are interested in the interplay between the time variable $t$ and the rate $\varepsilon$ of mutations. We show that depending on $α> 0$, the limit $\varepsilon \to 0$ with $t = \varepsilon^{-α}$ can lead to population number densities which are either Gaussian-like (when $α$ is small) or Cauchy-like (when $α$ is large).

Estimates for the large time behavior of the Landau equation in the Coulomb case

This work deals with the large time behaviour of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential. Firstly, we obtain a bound from below of the entropy dissipation $D(f)$ by a weighted relative Fisher information of $f$ with respect to the associated Maxwellian distribution, which leads to a variant of Cercignani's conjecture thanks to a logarithmic Sobolev inequality. Secondly, we prove the propagation of polynomial and stretched exponential moments with an at most linearly growing in time rate. As an application of these estimates, we show the convergence of any ($H$- or weak) solution to the Landau equation with Coulomb potential to the associated Maxwellian equilibrium with an explicitly computable rate, assuming initial data with finite mass, energy, entropy and some higher $L^1$-moment. More precisely, if the initial data have some (large enough) polynomial $L^1$-moment, then we obtain an algebraic decay. If the initial data have a stretched exponential $L^1$-moment, then we recover a stretched exponential decay.

Rigorous numerics for nonlinear operators with tridiagonal dominant linear part

We present a method designed for computing solutions of infinite dimensional non linear operators $f(x) = 0$ with a tridiagonal dominant linear part. We recast the operator equation into an equivalent Newton-like equation $x = T(x) = x - Af(x)$, where $A$ is an approximate inverse of the derivative $Df(\overline x)$ at an approximate solution $\overline x$. We present rigorous computer-assisted calculations showing that $T$ is a contraction near $\overline x$, thus yielding the existence of a solution. Since $Df(\overline x)$ does not have an asymptotically diagonal dominant structure, the computation of $A$ is not straightforward. This paper provides ideas for computing $A$, and proposes a new rigorous method for proving existence of solutions of nonlinear operators with tridiagonal dominant linear part.

Smoothness of moments of the solutions of discrete coagulation equations with diffusion

In this paper, we establish smoothness of moments of the solutions of discrete coagulation-diffusion systems. As key assumptions, we suppose that the coagulation coefficients grow at most sub-linearly and that the diffusion coefficients converge towards a strictly positive limit (those conditions also imply the existence of global weak solutions and the absence of gelation).

Entropy dissipation estimates for the Landau equation in the Coulomb case and applications

We present in this paper an estimate which bounds from below the entropy dissipation D(f) of the Landau operator with Coulomb interaction by a weighted H^1 norm of the square root of f. As a consequence, we get a weighted L^1_t(L^3_v) estimate for the solutions of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb interaction, and the propagation of L^1 moments of any order for this equation. We also present an application of our estimate to the Landau equation with (moderately) soft potentials, providing thus a new proof of some recent results of Kung-Chien Wu

On the entropic structure of reaction-cross diffusion systems

This paper is devoted to the study of systems of reaction-cross diffusion equations arising in population dynamics. New results of existence of weak solutions are presented, allowing to treat systems of two equations in which one of the cross diffusions is convex, while the other one is concave. The treatment of such cases involves a general study of the structure of Lyapunov functionals for cross diffusion systems, and the introduction of a new scheme of approximation, which provides simplified proofs of existence.

Entropy, Duality and Cross Diffusion

This paper is devoted to the use of the entropy and duality methods for the existence theory of reaction-cross diffusion systems consisting of two equations, in any dimension of space. Those systems appear in population dynamics when the diffusion rates of individuals of two species depend on the concentration of individuals of the same species (self-diffusion), or of the other species (cross diffusion).

Existence theory for a kinetic-fluid coupling when small droplets are treated as part of the fluid

We consider in this paper a spray constituted of an incompressible viscous gas and of small droplets which can breakup. This spray is modeled by the coupling (through a drag force term) of the incom- pressible Navier-Stokes equation and of the Vlasov-Boltzmann equation, together with a fragmentation kernel. We first show at the formal level that if the droplets are very small after the breakup, then the solutions of this system converge towards the solution of a simplified system in which the small droplets produced by the breakup are treated as part of the fluid. Then, existence of global weak solutions for this last system is shown to hold, thanks to the use of the DiPerna-Lions theory for singular transport equations.

Improved duality estimates and applications to reaction-diffusion equations

We present a refined duality estimate for parabolic equations. This estimate entails new results for systems of reaction-diffusion equations, including smoothness and exponential convergence towards equilibrium for equations with quadratic right-hand sides in two dimensions. For general systems in any space dimension, we obtain smooth solutions of reaction-diffusion systems coming out of reversible chemistry under an assumption that the diffusion coefficients are sufficiently close one to another.

Celebrating Cercignani's conjecture for the Boltzmann equation

Cercignani's conjecture assumes a linear inequality between the entropy and entropy production functionals for Boltzmann's nonlinear integral operator in rarefied gas dynamics. Related to the field of logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and spectral gap inequalities, this issue has been at the core of the renewal of the mathematical theory of convergence to thermodynamical equilibrium for rarefied gases over the past decade. In this review paper, we survey the various positive and negative results which were obtained since the conjecture was proposed in the 1980s.

Regularity and mass conservation for discrete coagulation-fragmentation equations with diffusion

We present a new a-priori estimate for discrete coagulation-fragmentation systems with size-dependent diffusion within a bounded, regular domain confined by homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. Following from a duality argument, this a-priori estimate provides a global $L^2$ bound on the mass density and was previously used, for instance, in the context of reaction-diffusion equations. In this paper we demonstrate two lines of applications for such an estimate: On the one hand, it enables to simplify parts of the known existence theory and allows to show existence of solutions for generalised models involving collision-induced, quadratic fragmentation terms for which the previous existence theory seems difficult to apply. On the other hand and most prominently, it proves mass conservation (and thus the absence of gelation) for almost all the coagulation coefficients for which mass conservation is known to hold true in the space homogeneous case.

The Mean-Field Limit for Solid Particles in a Navier-Stokes Flow

We propose a mathematical derivation of Brinkman's force for a cloud of particles immersed in an incompressible fluid. Our starting point is the Stokes or steady Navier-Stokes equations set in a bounded domain with the disjoint union of N balls of radius 1/N removed, and with a no-slip boundary condition for the fluid at the surface of each ball. The large N limit of the fluid velocity field is governed by the same (Navier-)Stokes equations in the whole domain, with an additional term (Brinkman's force) that is (minus) the total drag force exerted by the fluid on the particle system. This can be seen as a generalization of Allaire's result in [Arch. Rational Mech. Analysis 113 (1991), 209-259] who treated the case of motionless, periodically distributed balls. Our proof is based on slightly simpler, though similar homogenization techniques, except that we avoid the periodicity assumption and use instead the phase-space empirical measure for the particle system. Similar equations are used for describing the fluid phase in various models for sprays.

Large time behavior of the a priori bounds for the solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equations with soft potentials

We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for regularized soft potentials and Grad's angular cutoff. We prove that uniform (in time) bounds in $L^1 ((1 + |v|^s)dv)$ and $H^k$ norms, $s, k \ge 0$ hold for its solution. The proof is based on the mixture of estimates of polynomial growth in time of those norms together with the quantitative results of relaxation to equilibrium in $L^1$ obtained by the so-called "entropy-entropy production" method in the context of dissipative systems with slowly growing a priori bounds (see reference [14]).

Stability and uniqueness for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with long-range interactions

In this paper, we prove some a priori stability estimates (in weighted Sobolev spaces) for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff (covering every physical collision kernels). These estimates are conditioned to some regularity estimates on the solutions, and therefore reduce the stability and uniqueness issue to the one of proving suitable regularity bounds on the solutions. We then prove such regularity bounds for a class of interactions including the so-called (non cutoff and non mollified) hard potentials and moderately soft potentials. In particular, we obtain the first result of global existence and uniqueness for these long-range interactions.
