Maximal Theta Functions -- Universal Optimality of the Hexagonal Lattice for Madelung-Like Lattice Energies

We present two families of lattice theta functions accompanying the family of lattice theta functions studied by Montgomery in [H.~Montgomery. Minimal theta functions. \textit{Glasgow Mathematical Journal}, 30(1):75--85, 1988]. The studied theta functions are generalizations of the Jacobi theta-2 and theta-4 functions. Contrary to Montgomery's result, we show that, among lattices, the hexagonal lattice is the unique maximizer of both families of theta functions. As an immediate consequence, we obtain a new universal optimality result for the hexagonal lattice among two-dimensional alternating charged lattices and lattices shifted by the center of their unit cell.

Note on crystallization for alternating particle chains

We investigate one-dimensional periodic chains of alternate type of particles interacting through mirror symmetric potentials. The optimality of the equidistant configuration at fixed density -- also called crystallization -- is shown in various settings. In particular, we prove the crystallization at any scale for neutral and non-neutral systems with inverse power laws interactions, including the three-dimensional Coulomb potential. We also show the minimality of the equidistant configuration at high density for systems involving inverse power laws and repulsion at the origin. Furthermore, we derive a necessary condition for crystallization at high density based on the positivity of the Fourier transform of the interaction potentials sum.

On a lattice generalisation of the logarithm and a deformation of the Dedekind eta function

We consider a deformation $E_{L,Λ}^{(m)}(it)$ of the Dedekind eta function depending on two $d$-dimensional simple lattices $(L,Λ)$ and two parameters $(m,t)\in (0,\infty)$, initially proposed by Terry Gannon. We show that the minimizers of the lattice theta function are the maximizers of $E_{L,Λ}^{(m)}(it)$ in the space of lattices with fixed density. The proof is based on the study of a lattice generalization of the logarithm, called lattice-logarithm, also defined by Terry Gannon. We also prove that the natural logarithm is characterized by a variational problem over a class of one-dimensional lattice-logarithm.

2D Theta Functions and Crystallization among Bravais Lattices

In this paper, we study minimization problems among Bravais lattices for finite energy per point. We prove that if a function is completely monotonic, then the triangular lattice minimizes energy per particle among Bravais lattices with density fixed for any density. Furthermore we give an example of convex decreasing positive potential for which triangular lattice is not a minimizer for some densities. We use Montgomery method presented in our previous work to prove minimality of triangular lattice among Bravais lattices at high density for some general potentials. Finally we deduce global minimality among all Bravais lattices, i.e. without density constraint, of a triangular lattice for some parameters of Lennard-Jones type potentials and attractive-repulsive Yukawa potentials.

Minimization of energy per particle among Bravais lattices in R^2 : Lennard-Jones and Thomas-Fermi cases

We study the two dimensional Lennard-Jones energy per particle of lattices and we prove that the minimizer among Bravais lattices with sufficiently large density is triangular and that is not the case for sufficiently small density. We give other results about the global minimizer of this energy. Moreover we study the energy per particle stemming from Thomas-Fermi model in two dimensions and we prove that the minimizer among Bravais lattices with fixed density is triangular. We use a result of Montgomery from Number Theory about the minimization of Theta functions in the plane.
