Unimodular Gauge and ADM Gravity Path Integral

This paper proposes a definition of gravitational observables and of their path integral formula within the framework of ADM foliation and the choice of unimodular gauge classes. The method enforces a BRST invariant gauge fixing of the lapse and shift fields. It yields the quantum level extension of the known classical property that the conformal classes of internal metrics of constant Lorentz time leafs define the gravitational physical degrees of freedom.

Second Order Langevin Equation and Definition of Quantum Gravity By Stochastic Quantisation

Euclidean quantum gravity might be defined by stochastic quantisation that is governed by a higher order Langevin equation rather than a first order stochastic equation. In a transitory phase where the Lorentz time cannot be defined, the parameter that orders the evolution of quantum gravity phenomena is the stochastic time. This changes the definition of causality in the period of primordial cosmology. The prediction of stochastically quantised gravity is that there will a transition from an oscillating quantum phase to a semi-classical one, when the Lorentz time emerges. The end of the transition, as it can be observed from now and described by inflation models, is a diluted Universe, following the inflation phenomenological evolution. It is filled at the beginning with scattered classical primordial black holes. The smallest ones will quickly decay in matter, with a standard quantum field theory evolution till our period. The stable heavier black holes will remain, forming a good fraction of the dark matter and the large black holes observed in the galaxies. In a theoretically related way, this framework suggests the possibility of a gravitational parton content for "point-like" particles, in the same five dimensional quantum field theory context as in the primordial cosmology, with a (+----) signature for the 5d metrics. The very precise and explicit result expressed in this paper is actually far more modest than its motivation. We compute explicitly the meaning of a second order Langevin equation in zero dimensions and define precisely what is second order stochastic quantisation in a soluble case.

Unimodular Gauge in Perturbative Gravity and Supergravity

This paper explains the Unimodular gauge fixing of gravity and supergravity in the framework of a perturbative BRST construction. The unphysical sector contains additional BRST-exact quartets to suppress possible ambiguities and impose both the Unimodular gauge fixing condition on the metric and a gauge condition for the reparametrization symmetry of the unimodular part of the metric. The Unimodular gauge choice of the metric must be completed by a $γ$-Traceless gauge condition for the Rarita--Schwinger field in the case of supergravity. This gives an interesting new class of gauges for gravity and supergravity.

Weyl Symmetry in Stochastic Quantum Gravity

We propose that the gauge principle of d-dimensional Euclidean quantum gravity is Weyl invariance in its stochastic (d+1)-dimensional bulk. Observables are defined as depending only on conformal classes of d-dimensional metrics. We work with the second order stochastic quantization of Einstein equations in a (d+1)-dimensional bulk. There, the evolution is governed by the stochastic time, which foliates the bulk into Euclidean d-dimensional leaves. The internal metric of each leaf can be parametrized by its unimodular part and conformal factor. Additional bulk metric components are the ADM stochastic lapse and a stochastic shift. The Langevin equation determines the acceleration of the leaf as the sum of a quantum noise, a drift force proportional to Einstein equations and a viscous first order force. Using Weyl covariant decomposition, this Langevin equation splits into irreducible stochastic equations, one for the unimodular part of the metric and one for its conformal factor. For the first order Langevin equation, the unphysical fields are the conformal factor, which is a classical spectator, and the stochastic lapse and shift. These fields can be gauge-fixed in a BRST invariant way in function of the initial data of the process. One gets observables that are covariant with respect to internal reparametrization in each leaf, and invariant under arbitrary reparametrization of the stochastic time. The interpretation of physical observable at finite stochastic time is encoded in a transitory (d+1)-dimensional phase where the Lorentz time cannot be defined. The latter emerges in the infinite stochastic time limit by an abrupt phase transition from quantum to classical gravity.

Chains of topological oscillators with instantons and calculable topological observables in topological quantum mechanics

We extend to a possibly infinite chain the conformally invariant mechanical system that was introduced earlier as a toy model for understanding the topological Yang-Mills theory. It gives a topological quantum model that has interesting and computable zero modes and topological invariants. It confirms the recent conjecture by several authors that supersymmetric quantum mechanics may provide useful tools for understanding robotic mechanical systems (Vitelli et al.) and condensed matter properties (Kane et al.), where trajectories of effective models are allowed or not by the conservation of topological indices. The absences of ground state and mass gaps are special features of such systems.

Early Universes with Effective Discrete Time

The mechanism for triggering the universe inflation could be that at very early periods the time variable was discrete instead of smooth. Alternatively, and perhaps equivalently, it could be the consequence that the metrics of the early universe was a strongly concentrated gravitational coherent state with very high frequency oscillations, allowing local pair creations by a generalisation to gravity of the Schwinger mechanism, perhaps by creation of black holes of masses superior to the Planck scale. The lattice spacing between two clicks in the discrete time picture corresponds to the inverse frequency of the gravitational coherent state in the other picture. In both cases, a much lower time than the Planck time might represent a new fundamental scale, giving new type of physics. To make possible a concrete estimation of the pair production probability, we propose that the oscillating coherent state metrics that defines this very early geometry minimises the Einstein gravity action coupled to interacting 1-,2- and 3-forms. Part of our intuition relies on a condensed matter analogy with laser-induced superconductivity. An independent section suggests that the new physical time scale we introduce for the Markovian discret time of the pre-inflation epoch can be identified with the stochastic time one uses for standard quantisation in the post-inflation limit. In the pre-inflation phase its discreteness is the observable driving force for the universe evolution, while in the post inflation phase it becomes unobservable and it can can effectively replaced by the continuous time coordinate of standard quantum field theory.

Minimizing gauge-functional for 2-d gravity and string theory

We show the existence of a minimizing procedure for selecting a unique representative on the orbit of any given Riemann surface that contributes to the string partition function. As it must, the procedure reduces the string path integral to a final integration over a particular fundamental domain, selected by the choice of the minimizing functional. This construction somehow demystifies the Gribov question.

Twisted N=1, d=4 supergravity and its symmetries

We display the construction of a twisted superalgebra for the N=1 Euclidian supergravity on 4-manifolds with an almost complex structure. It acts on a representation of twisted supersymmetry made of forms with odd and even statistics and it is covariant under a SU(2)\subset SO(4) Lorentz invariance of the manifold's tangent-space. It contains 4 twisted supersymmetry generators, one nilpotent scalar, one vector and one pseudo-scalar. The superalgebra closes on the twisted fields of supergravity in its new minimal set of auxiliary fields. Its couplings to the twisted Wess and Zumino and vector multiplets are also determined.

Twisted Superalgebras and Cohomologies of the N=2 Superconformal Quantum Mechanics

We prove that the invariance of the N=2 superconformal quantum mechanics is controlled by subalgebras of a given twisted superalgebra made of 6 fermionic (nilpotent) generators and 6 bosonic generators (including a central charge). The superconformal quantum mechanics actions are invariant under this quite large twisted superalgebra. On the other hand, they are fully determined by a subalgebra with only 2 fermionic and 2 bosonic (the central charge and the ghost number) generators. The invariant actions are Q_i-exact (i=1,2,...,6), with a Q_{i'}-exact (i'\neq i) antecedent for all 6 fermionic generators. It follows that the superconformal quantum mechanics actions with Calogero potentials are uniquely determined even if, in its bosonic sector, the twisted superalgebra does not contain the one-dimensional conformal algebra sl(2), but only its Borel subalgebra. The general coordinate covariance of the non-linear sigma-model for the N=2 supersymmetric quantum mechanics in a curved target space is fully implied only by its worldline invariance under a pair of the 6 twisted supersymmetries. The transformation connecting the ordinary and twisted formulations of the N=2 superconformal quantum mechanics is explicitly presented.

One-dimensional structures behind twisted and untwisted superYang-Mills theory

We give a one-dimensional interpretation of the four-dimensional twisted N=1 superYang-Mills theory on a Kaehler manifold by performing an appropriate dimensional reduction. We prove the existence of a 6-generator superalgebra, which does not possess any invariant Lagrangian but contains two different subalgebras that determine the twisted and untwisted formulations of the N=1 superYang-Mills theory.

SU(5)-invariant decomposition of ten-dimensional Yang-Mills supersymmetry

The N=1,d=10 superYang-Mills action is constructed in a twisted form, using SU(5)-invariant decomposition of spinors in 10 dimensions. The action and its off-shell closed twisted scalar supersymmetry operator Q derive from a Chern-Simons term. The action can be decomposed as the sum of a term in the cohomology of Q and of a term that is Q-exact. The first term is a fermionic Chern-Simons term for a twisted component of the Majorana-Weyl gluino and it is related to the second one by a twisted vector supersymmetry with 5 parameters. The cohomology of Q and some topological observables are defined from descent equations. In this SU(5)<SO(10)$ invariant decomposition, the N=1, d=10 theory is determined by only 6 supersymmetry generators, as in the twisted N=4, d=4 theory. There is a superspace with 6 twisted fermionic directions, with solvable constraints.

Holomorphic Superspace

We give a twisted holomorphic superspace description for the super-Yang-Mills theory, using holomorphic and antiholomorphic decompositions of twisted spinors. We consider the case of the N=1 super-Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. We solve the constraints in two different manners, without and with a prepotential. This might have further application for an holomorphic superspace description of N=1,d=10 theory. We also explain how the N=1 and N=2 holomorphic superspaces are related.

Topological Symmetry of forms, N=1 Supersymmetry and S-duality on Special Manifolds

We study the quantization of a holomorphic two-form coupled to a Yang-Mills field on special manifolds in various dimensions, and we show that it yields twisted supersymmetric theories. The construction determines ATQFT's (Almost Topological Quantum Field Theories), that is, theories with observables that are invariant under changes of metrics belonging to restricted classes. For Kahler manifolds in four dimensions, our topological model is related to N=1 Super Yang-Mills theory. Extended supersymmetries are recovered by considering the coupling with chiral multiplets. We also analyse Calabi-Yau manifolds in six and eight dimensions, and seven dimensional G_2 manifolds of the kind recently discussed by Hitchin. We argue that the two-form field could play an interesting role for the study of the conjectured S-duality in topological string. We finally show that in the case of real forms in six dimensions the partition function of our topological model is related to the square of that of the holomorphic Chern-Simons theory, and we discuss the uplift to seven dimensions and its relation with the recent proposals for the topological M-theory.

Gravitational Topological Quantum Field Theory Versus N = 2 D = 8 Supergravity and its lift to N = 1 D = 11 Supergravity

In a previous work, it was shown that the 8-dimensional topological quantum field theory for a metric and a Kalb-Ramond 2-form gauge field determines N = 1 D = 8 supergravity. It is shown here that, the combination of this TQFT with that of a 3-form determines N = 2 D = 8 supergravity, that is, an untruncated dimensional reduction of N = 1 D = 11 supergravity. Our construction holds for 8-dimensional manifolds with Spin(7) \subset SO(8) holonomy. We suggest that the origin of local Poincare supersymmetry is the gravitational topological symmetry. We indicate a mechanism for the lift of the TQFT in higher dimensions, which generates Chern-Simons couplings.

Eight-Dimensional Topological Gravity and its Correspondence with Supergravity

A topological theory for euclidean gravity in eight dimensions is built by enforcing octonionic self-duality conditions on the spin connection. The eight-dimensional manifold must be of a special type, with G_2 or Spin(7) holonomy. The resulting theory is related to a twisted version of N=1, D=8 supergravity. The situation is comparable to that of the topological Yang--Mills theory in eight dimensions, for which the SO(8) invariance is broken down to Spin(7), but is recovered after untwisting the topological theory.

Topological Gravity versus Supergravity on Manifolds with Special Holonomy

We construct a topological theory for euclidean gravity in four dimensions, by enforcing self-duality conditions on the spin connection. The corresponding topological symmetry is associated to the SU(2) X diffeomorphism X U(1) invariance. The action of this theory is that of d=4, N=2 supergravity, up to a twist. The topological field theory is SU(2) invariant, but the full SO(4) invariance is recovered after untwist. This suggest that the topological gravity is relevant for manifolds with special holonomy. The situation is comparable to that of the topological Yang-Mills theory in eight dimensions, for which the SO(8) invariance is broken down to Spin(7), but is recovered after untwisting the topological theory.

Bulk Quantization of Gauge Theories: Confined and Higgs Phases

We deepen the understanding of the quantization of the Yang-Mills field by showing that the concept of gauge fixing in 4 dimensions is replaced in the 5-dimensional formulation by a procedure that amounts to an $A$-dependent gauge transformation. The 5-dimensional formulation implements the restriction of the physical 4-dimensional gluon field to the Gribov region, while being a local description that is under control of BRST symmetries both of topological and gauge type. The ghosts decouple so the Euclidean probability density is everywhere positive, in contradistinction to the Faddeev-Popov method for which the determinant changes sign outside the Gribov region. We include in our discussion the coupling of the gauge theory to a Higgs field, including the case of spontaneously symmetry breaking. We introduce a minimizing functional on the gauge orbit that could be of interest for numerical gauge fixing in the simulations of spontaneously broken lattice gauge theories. Other new results are displayed, such as the identification of the Schwinger-Dyson equation of the five dimensional formulation in the (singular) Landau gauge with that of the ordinary Faddeev-Popov formulation, order by order in perturbation theory.

From stochastic quantization to bulk quantization: Schwinger-Dyson equations and S-matrix

In stochastic quantization, ordinary 4-dimensional Euclidean quantum field theory is expressed as a functional integral over fields in 5 dimensions with a fictitious 5th time. This is advantageous, in particular for gauge theories, because it allows a different type of gauge fixing that avoids the Gribov problem. Traditionally, in this approach, the fictitious 5th time is the analog of computer time in a Monte Carlo simulation of 4-dimensional Euclidean fields. A Euclidean probability distribution which depends on the 5th time relaxes to an equilibrium distribution. However a broader framework, which we call ``bulk quantization", is required for extension to fermions, and for the increased power afforded by the higher symmetry of the 5-dimensional action that is topological when expressed in terms of auxiliary fields. Within the broader framework, we give a direct proof by means of Schwinger-Dyson equations that a time-slice of the 5-dimensional theory is equivalent to the usual 4-dimensional theory. The proof does not rely on the conjecture that the relevant stochastic process relaxes to an equilibrium distribution. Rather, it depends on the higher symmetry of the 5-dimensional action which includes a BRST-type topological invariance, and invariance under translation and inversion in the 5-th time. We express the physical S-matrix directly in terms of the truncated 5-dimensional correlation functions, for which ``going off the mass-shell'' means going from the 3 physical degrees of freedom to 5 independent variables. We derive the Landau-Cutokosky rules of the 5-dimensional theory which include the physical unitarity relation.

Remarks on Covariant Matrix Strings

We address the issue of the worldsheet and spacetime covariant formulation for matrix strings. The problem is solved in the limit of vanishing string coupling. To go beyond the g_s = 0 limit, we propose a topological quantum field theory as a twisted candidate. Our model involves the generalized octonionic or SU(4) instanton equations defined in eight dimensions for a supersymmetric U(N) Yang--Mills field living on a special holonomy manifold. The question of untwisting this matrix model into an anomaly free theory enlightens the need for an "extended" 2d-gravity sector, that we suggest could be (partially twisted) W-gravity.

Self-Duality and New TQFTs for Forms

We discuss theories containing higher-order forms in various dimensions. We explain how Chern--Simons-type theories of forms can be defined from TQFTs in one less dimension. We also exhibit new TQFTs with interacting Yang--Mills fields and higher--order forms. They are obtained by the dimensional reduction of TQFTs whose gauge functions are free self-duality equations. Interactions are due to the gauging of global internal symmetries after dimensional reduction. We list possible symmetries and give a brief discussion on the possible relation of such systems to interacting field theories.

Superstrings from theories with N>1 world-sheet supersymmetry

String theories with (N,N') local world-sheet supersymmetries are related to each other by marginal deformations. This connects N=1 and N=0 theories in which the target-spaces are interpreted as space-times, N=2 theories in which the target spaces can be interpreted as world-volumes, and theories with $N\ge 3$, in which the central charge vanishes -- theories with zero target-space dimensions.
