Quantitative estimates on localized finite differences for the fractional Poisson problem, and applications to regularity and spectral stability

We establish new quantitative estimates for localized finite differences of solutions to the Poisson problem for the fractional Laplace operator with homogeneous Dirichlet conditions of solid type settled in bounded domains satisfying the Lipschitz cone regularity condition. We then apply these estimates to obtain (i)~regularity results for solutions of fractional Poisson problems in Besov spaces; (ii)~quantitative stability estimates for solutions of fractional Poisson problems with respect to domain perturbations; (iii)~quantitative stability estimates for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of fractional Laplace operators with respect to domain perturbations.

On the extension property of Reifenberg-flat domains

We provide a detailed proof of the fact that any domain which is sufficiently flat in the sense of Reifenberg is also Jones-flat, and hence it is an extension domain. We discuss various applications of this property, in particular we obtain L^\infty estimates for the eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator with Neumann boundary conditions. We also compare different ways of measuring the "distance" between two sufficiently close Reifenberg-flat domains. These results are pivotal to the quantitative stability analysis of the spectrum of the Neumann Laplacian performed in another paper by the same authors.

Spectral stability estimates for the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacian in rough domains

In this paper we establish new quantitative stability estimates with respect to domain perturbations for all the eigenvalues of both the Neumann and the Dirichlet Laplacian. Our main results follow from an abstract lemma stating that it is actually sufficient to provide an estimate on suitable projection operators. Whereas this lemma could be applied under different regularity assumptions on the domain, here we use it to estimate the spectrum in Lipschitz and in so-called Reifenberg-flat domains. Our argument also relies on suitable extension techniques and on an estimate on the decay of the eigenfunctions at the boundary which could be interpreted as a boundary regularity result.

Accurate numerical schemes for approximating initial-boundary value problems for systems of conservation laws

Solutions of initial-boundary value problems for systems of conservation laws depend on the underlying viscous mechanism, namely different viscosity operators lead to different limit solutions. Standard numerical schemes for approximating conservation laws do not take into account this fact and converge to solutions that are not necessarily physically relevant. We design numerical schemes that incorporate explicit information about the underlying viscosity mechanism and approximate the physically relevant solution. Numerical experiments illustrating the robust performance of these schemes are presented.

Boundary layers for self-similar viscous approximations of nonlinear hyperbolic systems

We provide a precise description of the set of residual boundary conditions generated by the self-similar viscous approximation introduced by Dafermos et al. We then apply our results, valid for both conservative and non conservative systems, to the analysis of the boundary Riemann problem and we show that, under appropriate assumptions, the limits of the self-similar and the classical vanishing viscosity approximation coincide. We require neither genuinely nonlinearity nor linear degeneracy of the characteristic fields.

A uniqueness criterion for viscous limits of boundary Riemann problems

We deal with initial-boundary value problems for systems of conservation laws in one space dimension and we focus on the boundary Riemann problem. It is known that, in general, different viscous approximations provide different limits. In this paper, we establish sufficient conditions to conclude that two different approximations lead to the same limit. As an application of this result, we show that, under reasonable assumptions, the self-similar second-order approximation and the classical viscous approximation provide the same limit. Our analysis applies to both the characteristic and the non characteristic case. We require neither genuine nonlinearity nor linear degeneracy of the characteristic fields.
