On the equality of operator valued weights

G. K. Pedersen and M. Takesaki have proved in 1973 that if $φ$ is a faithful, semi-finite, normal weight on a von Neumann algebra $M\;\!$, and $ψ$ is a $σ^φ$-invariant, semi-finite, normal weight on $M\;\!$, equal to $φ$ on the positive part of a weak${}^*$-dense $σ^φ$-invariant $*$-subalgebra of $\mathfrak{M}_φ\;\!$, then $ψ=φ\;\!$. In 1978 L. Zsidó extended the above result by proving: if $φ$ is as above, $a\geq 0$ belongs to the centralizer $M^φ$ of $φ\;\!$, and $ψ$ is a $σ^φ$-invariant, semi-finite, normal weight on $M\;\!$, equal to $φ_a:=φ(a^{1/2}\;\!\cdot\;\! a^{1/2})$ on the positive part of a weak${}^*$-dense $σ^φ$-invariant $*$-subalgebra of $\mathfrak{M}_φ\;\!$, then $ψ=φ_a\;\!$. Here we will further extend this latter result, proving criteria for both the inequality $ψ\leqφ_a$ and the equality $ψ=φ_a\;\!$. Particular attention is accorded to criteria with no commutation assumption between $φ$ and $ψ\;\!$, in order to be used to prove inequality and equality criteria for operator valued weights. Concerning operator valued weights, it is proved that if $E_1\;\! ,E_2$ are semi-finite, normal operator valued weights from a von Neumann algebra $M$ to a von Neumann subalgebra $N\ni 1_M$ and they are equal on $\mathfrak{M}_{E_1}\;\!$, then $E_2\leq E_1\;\!$. Moreover, it is shown that this happens if and only if for any (or, if $E_1\;\! ,E_2$ have equal supports, for some) faithful, semi-finite, normal weight $θ$ on $N$ the weights $θ\circ E_2\;\! ,θ\circ E_1$ coincide on $\mathfrak{M}_{θ\circ E_1}\;\!$.

A negative minimum modulus theorem and surjectivity of ultradifferential operators

In 1979 I. Ciorănescu and L. Zsidó have proved a minimum modulus theorem for entire functions dominated by the restriction to the positive half axis of a canonical product of genus zero, having all roots on the positive imaginary axis and satisfying a certain condition. Here we prove that the above result is optimal: if a canonical product ω of genus zero, having all roots on the positive imaginary axis, does not satisfy the condition in the 1979 paper, then always there exists an entire function dominated by the restriction to the positive half axis of ω, which does not satisfy the desired minimum modulus conclusion. This has relevant implication concerning the subjectivity of ultra differential operators with constant coefficients.

Quantitative BT-Theorem and automatic continuity for standard von Neumann algebras

We prove a general criterion for a von Neumann algebra $M$ in order to be in standard form. It is formulated in terms of an everywhere defined, invertible, antilinear, a priori not necessarily bounded operator, intertwining $M$ with its commutant $M'$ and acting as the $*$-operation on the centre. We also prove a generalized version of the BT-Theorem which enables us to see that such an intertwiner must be necessarily bounded. It is shown that this extension of the BT-Theorem leads to the automatic boundedness of quite general operators which intertwine the identity map of a von Neumann algebra with a general bounded, real linear, operator valued map. We apply the last result to the automatic boundedness of linear operators implementing algebraic morphisms of a von Neumann algebra onto some Banach algebra, and to the structure of a $W^*$-algebra $M$ endowed with a normal, semi-finite, faithful weight $φ\,$, whose left ideal $\mathfrak N_φ$ admits an algebraic complement in the GNS representation space $H_φ\,$, invariant under the canonical action of $M$.
