On the consistency of the Kozachenko-Leonenko entropy estimate

We revisit the problem of the estimation of the differential entropy H(f)H(f) of a random vector XX in RdR^d with density ff, assuming that H(f)H(f) exists and is finite. In this note, we study the consistency of the popular nearest neighbor estimate HnH_n of Kozachenko and Leonenko. Without any smoothness condition we show that the estimate is consistent (E{∣Hn−H(f)∣}→0E\{|H_n - H(f)|\} \to 0 as n→∞n \to \infty) if and only if E{log⁡(∥X∥+1)}<∞\mathbb{E} \{ \log ( \| X \| + 1 )\} < \infty. Furthermore, if XX has compact support, then Hn→H(f)H_n \to H(f) almost surely.

Asymptotic behavior of the generalized St. Petersburg sum conditioned on its maximum

In this paper, we revisit the classical results on the generalized St. Petersburg sums. We determine the limit distribution of the St. Petersburg sum conditioning on its maximum, and we analyze how the limit depends on the value of the maximum. As an application, we obtain an infinite sum representation of the distribution function of the possible semistable limits. In the representation, each term corresponds to a given maximum, in particular this result explains that the semistable behavior is caused by the typical values of the maximum.

On the measure of Voronoi cells

nn independent random points drawn from a density ff in RdR^d define a random Voronoi partition. We study the measure of a typical cell of the partition. We prove that the asymptotic distribution of the probability measure of the cell centered at a point x∈Rdx \in R^d is independent of xx and the density ff. We determine all moments of the asymptotic distribution and show that the distribution becomes more concentrated as dd becomes large. In particular, we show that the variance converges to zero exponentially fast in dd. %We also study the measure of the largest cell of the partition. %{\red We also obtain a density-free bound for the rate of convergence of the diameter of a typical Voronoi cell.

Tail probabilities of St. Petersburg sums, trimmed sums, and their limit

We provide exact asymptotics for the tail probabilities P{Sn,r>x}\mathbb{P} \{S_{n,r} > x\} as x→∞x \to \infty, for fix nn, where Sn,rS_{n,r} is the rr-trimmed partial sum of i.i.d. St. Petersburg random variables. In particular, we prove that although the St. Petersburg distribution is only O-subexponential, the subexponential property almost holds. We also determine the exact tail behavior of the rr-trimmed limits.
