Elasticity bounds from Effective Field Theory

Phonons in solid materials can be understood as the Goldstone bosons of the spontaneously broken spacetime symmetries. As such their low energy dynamics are greatly constrained and can be captured by standard effective field theory (EFT) methods. In particular, knowledge of the nonlinear stress-strain curves completely fixes the full effective Lagrangian at leading order in derivatives. We attempt to illustrate the potential of effective methods focusing on the so-called hyperelastic materials, which allow large elastic deformations. We find that the self-consistency of the EFT imposes a number of bounds on physical quantities, mainly on the maximum strain and maximum stress that can be supported by the medium. In particular, for stress-strain relations that at large deformations are characterized by a power-law behaviour $σ(\varepsilon)\sim \varepsilon^ν$, the maximum strain exhibits a sharp correlation with the exponent $ν$.

Positivity Bounds and the Massless Spin-2 Pole

The presence of a massless spin-2 field in an effective field theory results in a $t$-channel pole in the scattering amplitudes that precludes the application of standard positivity bounds. Despite this, recent arguments based on compactification to three dimensions have suggested that positivity bounds may be applied to the $t$-channel pole subtracted amplitude. If correct this would have deep implications for UV physics and the Weak Gravity Conjecture. Within the context of a simple renormalizable field theory coupled to gravity we find that applying these arguments would constrain the low-energy coupling constants in a way which is incompatible with their actual values. This contradiction persists on deforming the theory. Further enforcing the $t$-channel pole subtracted positivity bounds on such generic renormalizable effective theories coupled to gravity would imply new physics at a scale parametrically smaller than expected, with far reaching implications. This suggests that generically the standard positivity bounds are inapplicable with gravity and we highlight a number of issues that impinge on the formulation of a three-dimensional amplitude which simultaneously satisfies the required properties of analyticity, positivity and crossing symmetry. We conjecture instead a modified bound that ought to be satisfied independently of the precise details of the high energy completion.

Positivity Constraints on Interacting Pseudo-Linear Spin-2 Fields

We explore the effective field theory for single and multiple interacting pseudo-linear spin-2 fields. By applying forward limit positivity bounds, we show that among the parameters contributing to elastic tree level scattering amplitude, there is no region of compatibility of the leading interactions with a standard local UV completion. Our result generalizes to any number of interacting pseudo-linear spin-2 fields. These results have significant implications for the organization of the effective field theory expansion for pseudo-linear fields.

Spontaneously broken boosts and the Goldstone continuum

The spontaneous breaking of boost invariance is ubiquitous in nature, yet the associated Goldstone bosons are nowhere to be seen. We discuss why some subtleties are to be expected in the Goldstone phenomenon for spontaneously broken boosts, and derive the corresponding quantum mechanical, non-perturbative Goldstone theorem. Despite similarities with more standard Goldstone theorems, we show by examples that ours can be obeyed by quite unusual spectra of low-energy excitations. In particular, for non-relativistic Fermi liquids, we prove that it is obeyed by the particle-hole continuum. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a Goldstone theorem obeyed by a continuum rather than by (approximately stable) single-particle Goldstone boson states.

EFT of Interacting Spin-2 Fields

We consider the effective field theory of multiple interacting massive spin-2 fields. We focus on the case where the interactions are chosen so that the cutoff is the highest possible, and highlight two distinct classes of theories. In the first class, the mass eigenstates only interact through potential operators that carry no derivatives in unitary gauge at leading order. In the second class, a specific kinetic mixing between the mass eigenstates is included non-linearly. Performing a decoupling and ADM analysis, we point out the existence of a ghost present at a low scale for the first class of interactions. For the second class of interactions where kinetic mixing is included, we derive the full $Λ_3$ decoupling limit and confirm the absence of any ghosts. Nevertheless both formulations can be used to consistently describe an EFT of interacting massive spin-2 fields which, for a suitable technically natural tuning of the EFT, have the same strong coupling scale $Λ_3$. We identify the generic form of EFT corrections in each case. By using Galileon Duality transformations for the specific case of two massive spin-2 fields with suitable couplings, the decoupling limit theory is shown to be a bi-Galileon.

Equivalence Principle on Cosmological Backgrounds in Scalar-Tensor Theories

We study the extent up to which the equivalence principle is obeyed in models of modified gravity and dark energy involving a single scalar degree of freedom. We focus on the effective field theories of dark energy describing the late time acceleration in the presence of ordinary matter species. In their covariant form these coincide with the Horndeski theories on a cosmological background with a slowly varying Hubble rate and a time-dependent scalar field. We show that in the case of an exactly de Sitter universe both the weak and strong equivalence principles hold. This occurs due to the combination of the shift symmetry of the scalar and the time translational invariance of de Sitter space. When generalized to Friedmann--Robertson--Walker cosmologies (FRW) we show that the weak equivalence principle is obeyed for test particles and extended objects in the quasi-static subhorizon limit. We do this by studying the field created by an extended object moving in an FRW background as well as its equation of motion in an external gravitational field. We also estimate the corrections to the geodesic equation of the extended object due to the approximations made.

Positivity Constraints on Interacting Spin-2 Fields

The consistency of the EFT of two interacting spin-2 fields is checked by applying forward limit positivity bounds on the scattering amplitudes to exclude the region of parameter space devoid of a standard UV completion. We focus on two classes of theories that have the highest possible EFT cutoff, namely those theories modelled on ghost-free interacting theories of a single massive spin-2 field. We find that the very existence of interactions between the spin-2 fields implies more stringent bounds on all the parameters of the EFT, even on the spin-2 self-interactions. This arises for two reasons. First, with every new field included in the low-energy EFT, comes the `knowledge' of an extra pole to be subtracted, hence strengthening the positivity bounds. Second, while adding new fields increases the number of free parameters from the new interactions, this is rapidly overcome by the increased number of positivity bounds for different possible scattering processes. We also discuss how positivity bounds appear to favour relations between operators that effectively raise the cutoff of the EFT.

Relaxing the Cosmological Constant: a Proof of Concept

We propose a technically natural scenario whereby an initially large cosmological constant (c.c.) is relaxed down to the observed value due to the dynamics of a scalar evolving on a very shallow potential. The model crucially relies on a sector that violates the null energy condition (NEC) and gets activated only when the Hubble rate becomes sufficiently small --- of the order of the present one. As a result of NEC violation, this low-energy universe evolves into inflation, followed by reheating and the standard Big Bang cosmology. The symmetries of the theory force the c.c. to be the same before and after the NEC-violating phase, so that a late-time observer sees an effective c.c. of the correct magnitude. Importantly, our model allows neither for eternal inflation nor for a set of possible values of dark energy, the latter fixed by the parameters of the theory.

Density matrix of black hole radiation

Hawking's model of black hole evaporation is not unitary and leads to a mixed density matrix for the emitted radiation, while the Page model describes a unitary evaporation process in which the density matrix evolves from an almost thermal state to a pure state. We compare a recently proposed model of semiclassical black hole evaporation to the two established models. In particular, we study the density matrix of the outgoing radiation and determine how the magnitude of the off-diagonal corrections differs for the three frameworks. For Hawking's model, we find power-law corrections to the two-point functions that induce exponentially suppressed corrections to the off-diagonal elements of the full density matrix. This verifies that the Hawking result is correct to all orders in perturbation theory and also allows one to express the full density matrix in terms of the single-particle density matrix. We then consider the semiclassical theory for which the corrections, being non-perturbative from an effective field-theory perspective, are much less suppressed and grow monotonically in time. In this case, the Rényi entropy for the outgoing radiation is shown to grow linearly at early times; but this growth slows down and the entropy eventually starts to decrease at the Page time. In addition to comparing models, we emphasize the distinction between the state of the radiation emitted from a black hole, which is highly quantum, and that of the radiation emitted from a typical classical black body at the same temperature.

Solid Holography and Massive Gravity

Momentum dissipation is an important ingredient in condensed matter physics that requires a translation breaking sector. In the bottom-up gauge/gravity duality, this implies that the gravity dual is massive. We start here a systematic analysis of holographic massive gravity (HMG) theories, which admit field theory dual interpretations and which, therefore, might store interesting condensed matter applications. We show that there are many phases of HMG that are fully consistent effective field theories and which have been left overlooked in the literature. The most important distinction between the different HMG phases is that they can be clearly separated into solids and fluids. This can be done both at the level of the unbroken spacetime symmetries as well as concerning the elastic properties of the dual materials. We extract the modulus of rigidity of the solid HMG black brane solutions and show how it relates to the graviton mass term. We also consider the implications of the different HMGs on the electric response. We show that the types of response that can be consistently described within this framework is much wider than what is captured by the narrow class of models mostly considered so far.

Stability of Massive Gravity Solutions for Holographic Conductivity

We consider non-linear massive gravity with two Stückelberg fields in which the diffeomorphism invariance is broken spontaneously in two of the spacetime directions. This theory admits a charged anti-de Sitter black brane solution and has recently been used in holographic context as a bulk description of a boundary field theory with momentum dissipation. Here we study the stability of the black brane solution. We identify the physical degrees of freedom and determine the healthy regions of the parameter space of the theory. We find that there is a region in parameter space, where the theory suffers from ghost instability. We recognise this as the reason for the instability found in the previous works on holographic conductivity. We also rederive the previous results for the holographic conductivity in a coordinate independent way.

Reduced Massive Gravity with Two Stückelberg Fields

We consider the non-linear massive gravity as a theory of a number of Stückelberg scalar fields minimally coupled to the Einstein-Hilbert gravity and argue that the counting of degrees of freedom can be done for scalar theory and gravity separately. In this paper we investigate the system with only two Stückelberg scalar fields. In this case we find the analytic expression for the determinant of the kinetic matrix of the scalar field Lagrangian and perform the full constraint analysis. In 1+1 space-time dimensions the theory corresponds to the full non-linear massive gravity, and this determinant vanishes identically. In this case we find two first-class constraints, and present the corresponding gauge symmetry of the theory which eliminates both scalar degrees of freedom. In 3+1 dimensions the determinant of the kinetic matrix does not vanish identically and, for generic initial conditions, both scalar fields are propagating.

Semiclassical Calculation of Multiparticle Scattering Cross Sections in Classicalizing Theories

It has been suggested in arXiv:1010.1415 that certain derivatively coupled non-renormalizable scalar field theories might restore the perturbative unitarity of high energy hard scatterings by classicalization, i.e. formation of multiparticle states of soft quanta. Here we apply the semiclassical method of calculating the multiparticle production rates to the scalar Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theory which is suggested to classicalize. We find that the semiclassical method is applicable for the energies in the final state above the cutoff scale of the theory L_*^{-1}. We encounter that the cross section of the process two to N ceases to be exponentially suppressed for the particle number in the final state N smaller than a critical particle number N_{crit} ~ (E L_*)^{4/3}. It coincides with the typical particle number produced in two-particle collisions at high energies predicted by classicalization arguments.

Massive Gravity on Curved Background

We investigate generally covariant theories which admit a Fierz-Pauli mass term for metric perturbations around an arbitrary curved background. For this we restore the general covariance of the Fierz-Pauli mass term by introducing four scalar fields which preserve a certain internal symmetry in their configuration space. It is then apparent that for each given spacetime metric this construction corresponds to a completely different generally covariant massive gravity theory with different symmetries. The proposed approach is verified by explicit analysis of the physical degrees of freedom of massive graviton on de Sitter space.

Massive Gravity: Exorcising the Ghost

We consider Higgs massive gravity [1,2] and investigate whether a nonlinear ghost in this theory can be avoided. We show that although the theory considered in [10,11] is ghost free in the decoupling limit, the ghost nevertheless reappears in the fourth order away from the decoupling limit. We also demonstrate that there is no direct relation between the value of the Vainshtein scale and the existence of nonlinear ghost. We discuss how massive gravity should be modified to avoid the appearance of the ghost.
