Ab initio typical medium theory of substitutional disorder

By merging single-site typical medium theory with density functional theory we introduce a self-consistent framework for electronic structure calculations of materials with substitutional disorder which takes into account Anderson localization. The scheme and details of the implementation are presented and applied to the hypothetical alloy Li$_{c}$Be$_{1-c}$, and the results are compared with those obtained with the coherent potential approximation. Furthermore we demonstrate that Anderson localization suppresses ferromagnetic order for a very low concentration of (i) carbon impurities substituting oxygen in MgO$_{1-c}$C$_{c}$, and (ii) manganese impurities substituting magnesium in Mg$_{1-c}$Mn$_c$O for the low-spin magnetic configuration.

Spherically symmetric density and potential of a hydrogen molecule

Using a hydrogen molecule as a test system we demonstrate how to compute the effective potential according to the formalism of the new density functional theory (DFT), in which the basic variable is the set of spherically averaged densities instead of the total density, used in the traditional DFT. The effective potential together the external potential, nuclear Coulomb potential, can be substituted in the Schrödinger like differential equation to obtain the spherically averaged electron density of the system. In the new method instead of one three-dimensional low symmetry equation one has to solve as many spherically symmetric equations as there are atoms in the system.

The electronic structure of palladium in the presence of many-body effects

Including on-site electronic interactions described by the multi-orbital Hubbard model we study the correlation effects in the electronic structure of bulk palladium. We use a combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory, LDA+DMFT, based on the fluctuation exchange approximation. The agreement between the experimentally determined and the theoretical lattice constant and bulk modulus is improved when correlation effects are included. It is found that correlations modify the Fermi surface around the neck at the $L$-point while the Fermi surface tube structures show little correlation effects. At the same time we discuss the possibility of satellite formation in the high energy binding region. Spectral functions obtained within the LDA+DMFT and $GW$ methods are compared to discuss non-local correlation effects. For relatively weak interaction strength of the local Coulomb and exchange parameters spectra from LDA+DMFT shows no major difference in comparison to $GW$.

Segregation, precipitation, and α-α' phase separation in Fe-Cr alloys: a multi-scale modelling approach

Segregation, precipitation, and phase separation in Fe-Cr systems is investigated. Monte Carlo simulations using semiempirical interatomic potential, first-principles total energy calculations, and experimental spectroscopy are used. In order to obtain a general picture of the relation of the atomic interactions and properties of Fe-Cr alloys in bulk, surface, and interface regions several complementary methods has to be used. Using Exact Muffin-Tin Orbitals method the effective chemical potential as a function of Cr content (0-15 at.% Cr) is calculated for a surface, second atomic layer and bulk. At ~10 at.% Cr in the alloy the reversal of the driving force of a Cr atom to occupy either bulk or surface sites is obtained. The Cr containing surfaces are expected when the Cr content exceeds ~10 at.%. The second atomic layer forms about 0.3 eV barrier for the migration of Cr atoms between bulk and surface atomic layer. To get information on Fe-Cr in larger scales we use semiempirical methods. Using combined Monte Carlo molecular dynamics simulations, based on semiempirical potential, the precipitation of Cr into isolated pockets in bulk Fe-Cr and the upper limit of the solubility of Cr into Fe layers in Fe/Cr layer system is studied. The theoretical predictions are tested using spectroscopic measurements. Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy investigations were carried out to explore Cr segregation and precipitation in Fe/Cr double layer and Fe_0.95Cr_0.05 and Fe_0.85Cr_0.15 alloys. Initial oxidation of Fe-Cr was investigated experimentally at 10^-8 Torr pressure of the spectrometers showing intense Cr_2O_3 signal. Cr segregation and the formation of Cr rich precipitates were traced by analysing the experimental spectral intensities with respect to annealing time, Cr content, and kinetic energy of the exited electron.

Transmission through correlated Cu$_n$CoCu$_n$ heterostructures

The effects of local electronic interactions and finite temperatures upon the transmission across the Cu$_4$CoCu$_4$ metallic heterostructure are studied in a combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory. It is shown that, as the electronic correlations are taken into account via a local but dynamic self-energy, the total transmission at the Fermi level gets reduced (predominantly in the minority spin channel), whereby the spin polarization of the transmission increases. The latter is due to a more significant $d$-electrons contribution, as compared to the non-correlated case in which the transport is dominated by $s$ and $p$ electrons.

Flexibility of the quasi-non-uniform exchange-correlation approximation

In our previous study [Phys. Rev. B 86, 201104 (2012)] we introduced the so called quasi-non-uniform gradient-level exchange-correlation approximation (QNA) and demonstrated it's strength in producing highly accurate equilibrium volumes for metals and their alloys within the density-functional theory. In this paper we extend the scheme to include the accuracy of bulk modulus as an additional figure of merit and show that this scheme is flexible enough as to allow the computation of accurate equilibrium volumes and bulk moduli at the same time. The power and feasibility of this scheme is demonstrated on NiAl and FeV binary alloys.

Magnetoelastic effects in doped Fe2P

We use combine high resolution neutron diffraction (HRPD) with density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the exchange striction at the Curie temperature (TC) of Fe2P and to examine the effect of boron and carbon doping on the P site. We find a significant contraction of the basal plane on heating through TC with a simultaneous increase of the c-axis that results in a small overall volume change of ~0.01%. At the magnetic transition the FeI-FeI distance drops significantly and becomes shorter than FeI-FeII . The shortest metal-metalloid (FeI-PI) distance also decreases sharply. Our DFT model reveals the importance of the latter as this structural change causes a redistribution of the FeI moment along the c-axis (Fe-P chain). We are able to understand the site preference of the dopants, the effect of which can be linked to the increased moment on the FeI-site, brought about by strong magneto-elasticity and changes in the electronic band structure.

Magnetic origin of chemical balance in alloyed Fe-Cr stainless steels: first-principles and Ising model study

Iron-chromium forms the basis of most of the stainless steel grades in the markets. Recently new insights into the physical and chemical properties of Fe-Cr based alloys have been obtained. Some of the new results are quite unexpected and call for further investigations. The present study addresses the magnetic contribution in the atomic driving forces behind the chemical composition in Fe-Cr alloyed with Al, Ti, V, Mn, Co, Ni, and Mo. Using the ab initio exact muffin-tin orbitals method and an Ising-type spin model, it is found that the magnetic moment of the solute atom combined with the induced changes in the magnetic moments of the host atoms form the main framework in determining the mixing energy and chemical potentials of low-Cr Fe-Cr based alloys. The results obtained in the present work are related to tuning of the microstructure and corrosion protection of low-Cr steels.

One particle spectral function and analytic continuation for many-body implementation in the EMTO method

We investigate one of the most common analytic continuation techniques in condensed matter physics, namely the Padé approximant. Aspects concerning its implementation in the exact muffin-tin orbitals (EMTO) method are scrutinized with special regard towards making it stable and free of artificial defects. The electronic structure calculations are performed for solid hydrogen, and the performance of the analytical continuation is assessed by monitoring the density of states constructed directly and via the Padé approximation. We discuss the difference between the \textbf{k}-integrated and \textbf{k}-resolved analytical continuations, as well as describing the use of random numbers and pole residues to analyze the approximant. It is found that the analytic properties of the approximant can be controlled by appropriate modifications, making it a robust and reliable tool for electronic structure calculations. At the end, we propose a route to perform analytical continuation for the EMTO + dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) method.

Phase transformation in steel alloys for magnetocaloric applications; Fe$_{85-x}$Cr$_{15}$Ni$_{x}$ and Fe$_{85-x}$Cr$_{15}$Mn$_{x}$ as prototypes

We here show by first principles theory that it is possible to achieve a structural and magnetic phase transition in common steel alloys like Fe$_{85}$Cr$_{15}$, by alloying with Ni or Mn. The predicted phase transition is from the ferromagnetic body centered cubic (bcc) phase to the paramagnetic face centered cubic (fcc) phase. The relatively high average magnetic moment of $\sim1.4μ_{B}$/atom predicted at the transition suggests that stainless steel potentially can present a magnetocaloric effect strong enough to make these alloys good candidates for refrigeration applications operating at and around room temperature.

Quasi-non-local gradient-level exchange-correlation approximation for metals and alloys

The flexibility of common generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation energy is investigated by monitoring the equilibrium volume of transition metals. It is shown that no universal gradient-level approximation yielding consistent errors for all metals exists. Based on an element-specific optimization, the concept of quasi-non-local gradient-level approximation is introduced. The strength of the scheme is demonstrated on several transition metal alloys.

Absence of halfmetallicity in defect-free Cr, Mn-delta-doped Digital Magnetic Heterostructures

We present results of a combined density functional and many-body calculations for the electronic and magnetic properties of the defect-free digital ferromagnetic heterostructures obtained by doping GaAs with Cr and Mn. While local density approximation/(+U) predicts half-metallicity in these defect-free delta-doped heterostructures, we demonstrate that local many-body correlations captured by Dynamical Mean Field Theory induce within the minority spin channel non-quasiparticle states just above $E_F$. As a consequence of the existence of these many-body states the half-metallic gap is closed and the carriers spin polarization is significantly reduced. Below the Fermi level the minority spin highest valence states are found to localize more on the GaAs layers being independent of the type of electronic correlations considered. Thus, our results confirm the confinement of carriers in these delta-doped heterostructures, having a spin-polarization that follow a different temperature dependence than magnetization. We suggest that polarized hot-electron photoluminescence experiments might bring evidence for the existence of many-body states within the minority spin channel and their finite temperature behavior.
