Domain wall profiles in Co/Ir$_n$/Pt(111) ultrathin films: influence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We perform a study of domain walls in Co/Ir$_n$/Pt(111) (n = 0,1,...,6) films by a combined approach of first-principles calculations and spin dynamics simulations. We determine the tensorial exchange interactions and the magnetic anisotropies for the Co overlayer in both FCC and HCP geometries, depending on the number of Ir buffer layers. We find strong ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor isotropic exchange interactions between the Co atoms and an out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy for the films in FCC geometry. Our simulations show that the magnetic domain walls are of Néel type, and their rotational sense (chirality) is changed upon the insertion of an Ir buffer layer as compared to the pristine Co/Pt(111) system. Our spin dynamics simulations indicate a twisting of the spins with respect to the planar domain wall profile on the triangular lattice. We discuss this domain wall twisting using symmetry arguments and in terms of an appropriate micromagnetic continuum model considering extra energy terms compared to the available literature.

Band bending at the surface of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ studied from first principles

The band bending (BB) effect on the surface of the second-generation topological insulators implies a serious challenge to design transport devices. The BB is triggered by the effective electric field generated by charged impurities close to the surface and by the inhomogeneous charge distribution of the occupied surface states. Our self-consistent calculations in the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker framework showed that in contrast to the bulk bands, the spectrum of the surface states is not bent at the surface. In turn, it is possible to tune the energy level of the Dirac point via the deposited surface dopants. In addition, the electrostatic modifications induced by the charged impurities on the surface induce long range oscillations in the charge density. For dopants located beneath the surface, however, these oscillations become highly suppressed. Our findings are in good agreement with recent experiments, however, our results indicate that the concentration of the surface doping cannot be estimated from the energy shift of the Dirac cone within the scope of the effective continuous model for the protected surface states.

Improved efficiency of heat generation in nonlinear dynamics of magnetic nanoparticles

The deterministic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation has been used to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of magnetization and the specific loss power in magnetic nanoparticles with uniaxial anisotropy driven by a rotating magnetic field. We propose a new type of applied field, which is "simultaneously rotating and alternating", i.e. the direction of the rotating external field changes periodically. We show that a more efficient heat generation by magnetic nanoparticles is possible with this new type of applied field and we suggest its possible experimental realization in cancer therapy which requires the enhancement of loss energies.

Magnetic correlations beyond the Heisenberg model in an Fe monolayer on Rh(001)

Motivated by a recent experimental observation of a complex magnetic structure [Takada et al. 2013 J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 329 95] we present a theoretical study of the magnetic structure of an Fe monolayer deposited on Rh(001). We use a classical spin Hamiltonian with parameters obtained from ab initio calculations and go beyond the usual anisotropic Heisenberg model by including isotropic biquadratic interactions. Zero-temperature Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert spin dynamics simulations lead to a complex collinear spin configuration that, however, contradicts experimental finding. We thus conclude that higher order multi-spin interactions are likely needed to account for the magnetic ordering of the system.

Universal distribution of magnetic anisotropy of impurities in ordered and disordered nano-grains

We examine the distribution of the magnetic anisotropy (MA) experienced by a magnetic impurity embedded in a metallic nano-grain. As an example of a generic magnetic impurity with partially filled $d$-shell, we study the case of $d^{1}$ impurities imbedded into ordered and disordered Au nano-grains, described in terms of a realistic band structure. Confinement of the electrons induces a magnetic anisotropy that is large, and can be characterized by 5 real parameters, coupling to the quadrupolar moments of the spin. In ordered (spherical) nano-grains, these parameters exhibit symmetrical structures and reflect the symmetry of the underlying lattice, while for disordered grains they are randomly distributed and, - for stronger disorder, - their distribution is found to be characterized by random matrix theory. As a result, the probability of having small magnetic anisotropies $K_L$ is suppressed below a characteristic scale $Δ_E$, which we predict to scale with the number of atoms $N$ as $Δ_E\sim 1/N^{3/2}$. This gives rise to anomalies in the specific heat and the susceptibility at temperatures $T\sim Δ_E$ and produces distinct structures in the magnetic excitation spectrum of the clusters, that should be possible to detect experimentally.

Fluctuating local moments, itinerant electrons and the magnetocaloric effect: the compositional hypersensitivity of FeRh

We describe an ab-initio Disordered Local Moment Theory for materials with quenched static compositional disorder traversing first order magnetic phase transitions. It accounts quantitatively for metamagnetic changes and the magnetocaloric effect. For perfect stoichiometric B2-ordered FeRh, we calculate the transition temperature of the ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition to be $T_t =$ 495K and a maximum isothermal entropy change in 2 Tesla of $|ΔS|= 21.1$ J~K$^{-1}$~kg$^{-1}$. A large (40\%) component of $|ΔS|$ is electronic. The transition results from a fine balance of competing electronic effects which is disturbed by small compositional changes - e.g. swapping just 2\% Fe of `defects' onto the Rh sublattice makes $T_t$ drop by 290K. This hypersensitivity explains the narrow compositional range of the transition and impurity doping effects.

Formation of magnetic skyrmions with tunable properties in PdFe bilayer deposited on Ir(111)

We perform an extensive study of the spin-configurations in a PdFe bilayer on Ir(111) in terms of ab initio and spin-model calculations. We use the spin-cluster expansion technique to obtain spin model parameters, and solve the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations at zero temperature. In particular, we focus on effects of layer relaxations and the evolution of the magnetic ground state in external magnetic field. In the absence of magnetic field, we find a spin-spiral ground state, while applying external magnetic field skyrmions are generated in the system. Based on energy calculations of frozen spin configurations with varying magnetic field we obtain excellent agreement for the phase boundaries with available experiments. We find that the wave length of spin-spirals and the diameter of skyrmions decrease with increasing inward Fe layer relaxation which is correlated with the increasing ratio of the nearest-neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the isotropic exchange coupling, $D/J$. Our results also indicate that the applied field needed to stabilize the skyrmion lattice increases when the diameter of individual skyrmions decreases. Based on our observations, we suggest that the formation of the skyrmion lattice can be tuned by small structural modification of the thin film.

Langevin spin dynamics based on ab initio calculations: numerical schemes and applications

A method is proposed to study the finite-temperature behaviour of small magnetic clusters based on solving the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations, where the effective magnetic field is calculated directly during the solution of the dynamical equations from first principles instead of relying on an effective spin Hamiltonian. Different numerical solvers are discussed in the case of a one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with nearest-neighbour interactions. We performed detailed investigations for a monatomic chain of ten Co atoms on top of Au(001) surface. We found a spiral-like ground state of the spins due to Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions, while the finite-temperature magnetic behaviour of the system was well described by a nearest-neighbour Heisenberg model including easy-axis anisotropy.

Metallic magnetism at finite temperatures studied by relativistic disordered moment description: Theory and applications

We develop a self-consistent relativistic disordered local moment (RDLM) scheme aimed at describing finite temperature magnetism of itinerant metals from first principles. Our implementation in terms of the Korringa--Kohn--Rostoker multiple scattering theory and the coherent potential approximation allows to relate the orientational distribution of the spins to the electronic structure, thus a self-consistent treatment of the distribution is possible. We present applications for bulk bcc Fe, L1$_0$-FePt and FeRh ordered in the CsCl structure. The calculations for Fe show significant variation of the local moments with temperature, whereas according to the mean field treatment of the spin fluctuations the Curie temperature is overestimated. The magnetic anisotropy of FePt alloys is found to depend strongly on intermixing between nominally Fe and Pt layers, and it shows a power-law behavior as a function of magnetization for a broad range of chemical disorder. In case of FeRh we construct a lattice constant vs. temperature phase diagram and determine the phaseline of metamagnetic transitions based on self-consistent RDLM free energy curves.

Non-collinear Magnetic Configurations at Finite Temperature in Thin Films

The finite-temperature magnetism of a monolayer on a bcc (110) surface was examined using a model Hamiltonian containing ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions and easy-axis on-site anisotropy. We examined the competition between the collinear ground state parallel to the easy axis and the spin spiral state in the plane perpendicular to this axis preferred by the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. Using approximative methods to calculate the magnon spectrum at finite temperatures, it was found that even if the ground state is collinear, increasing the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction strongly decreases the critical temperature where this collinear order disappears. Using atomistic spin dynamics simulations it was found that at this critical temperature the system transforms into the non-collinear state. Including external magnetic field helps stabilising the ferromagnetic state. An effect due to the finite size of the magnetic monolayer was included in the model by considering a different value for the anisotropy at the edges of the monolayer. This effect was shown to stabilize the spin spiral state by fixing the phase at the ends of the stripe.

Spin-correlations and magnetic structure in an Fe monolayer on 5d transition metal surfaces

We present a detailed first principles study on the magnetic structure of an Fe monolayer on different surfaces of 5d transition metals. We use the spin-cluster expansion technique to obtain parameters of a spin model, and predict the possible magnetic ground state of the studied systems by employing the mean field approach and in certain cases by spin dynamics calculations. We point out that the number of shells considered for the isotropic exchange interactions plays a crucial role in the determination of the magnetic ground state. In the case of Ta substrate we demonstrate that the out-of-plane relaxation of the Fe monolayer causes a transition from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic ground state. We examine the relative magnitude of nearest neighbour Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (D) and isotropic (J) exchange interactions in order to get insight into the nature of magnetic pattern formations. For the Fe/Os(0001) system we calculate a very large D/J ratio, correspondingly, a spin spiral ground state. We find that, mainly through the leading isotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the inward layer relaxation substantially influences the magnetic ordering of the Fe monolayer. For the Fe/Re(0001) system characterized by large antiferromagnetic interactions we also determine the chirality of the $120^{\circ}$ Néel-type ground state.

Effects of composition and chemical disorder on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Fe_{x}Pt_{1-x} alloys

We perform first principles calculations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of the L1_{0}-like Fe_{x}Pt_{1-x} samples studied experimentally by Barmak and co-workers in [J. Appl. Phys. 98 (2005) 033904]. The variation of composition and long-range chemical order in the samples was studied in terms of the coherent potential approximation. In accordance with experimental observations, we find that, in the presence of long-range chemical disorder, Fe-rich samples exhibit a larger MAE than stoichiometric FePt. By considering the site- and species-resolved contributions to the MAE, we infer that the MAE is primarily a function of the degree of completeness of the nominal Fe layers in the L1_{0} FePt structure.

Exchange Bias driven by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

The exchange bias effect in compensated IrMn3/Co(111) system is studied using multiscale modeling from "ab initio" to atomistic calculations. We evaluate numerically the out-of-plane hysteresis loops of the bi-layer for different thickness of the ferromagnetic layer. The results show the existence of a perpendicular exchange bias field and an enhancement of the coercivity of the system. In order to elucidate the possible origin of the exchange bias, we analyze the hysteresis loops of a selected bi-layer by tuning the different contributions to the exchange interactions across the interface. Our results indicate that the exchange bias is primarily induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, while the coercivity is increased mainly due to a spin-flop mechanism.

Interatomic exchange interactions in non-collinear magnets

We derive ab inito exchange parameters for general non-collinear magnetic configurations, in terms of a multiple scattering formalism. We show that the general exchange formula has an anisotropic-like term even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, and that this term is large, for instance for collinear configuration in bcc Fe, whereas for fcc Ni it is quite small. We demonstrate that keeping this term leads to that one should consider a biquadratic effective spin Hamiltonian even in case of collinear arrangement. In non-collinear systems this term results in new tensor elements, that are important for exchange interactions at finite temperatures but they have less importance at low temperature. To illustrate our results in practice, we calculate for bcc Fe magnon spectra obtained from configuration dependent exchange parameters, where the configurations are determined by finite temperature effects. Our theory results in the same quantitative results as the finite temperature neutron scattering experiments.

Relativistic and thermal effects on the magnon spectrum of a ferromagnetic monolayer

A spin model including magnetic anisotropy terms and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions is studied for the case of a ferromagnetic monolayer with C2v symmetry like Fe/W(110). Using the quasiclassical stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations, the magnon spectrum of the system is derived using linear response theory. The Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction leads to asymmetry in the spectrum, while the anisotropy terms induce a gap. It is shown that in the presence of lattice defects, both the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions and the two-site anisotropy lead to a softening of the magnon energies. Two methods are developed to investigate the magnon spectrum at finite temperatures. The theoretical results are compared to atomistic spin dynamics simulations and a good agreement is found between them.

Effect of Pt impurities on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of hcp Co: a first-principles study

In terms of the fully relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method we investigate the variation in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of hexagonal close-packed cobalt with the addition of platinum impurities. In particular, we perform calculations on a bulk cobalt system in which one of the atomic layers contains a fractional, substitutional platinum impurity. Our calculations show that at small concentrations of platinum the MAE is reduced, while at larger concentrations the MAE is enhanced. This change of the MAE can be attributed to an interplay between on-site Pt MAE contributions and induced MAE contributions on the Co sites. The latter ones are subject to pronounced, long-ranged Friedel-oscillations that can lead to significant size effects in the experimental determination of the MAE of nano-sized samples.

Anisotropic spin--spin correlations in Mn$_1$/X(111), with X = Pd, Pt, Ag and Au

We present a finite-temperature theory of the anisotropic spin-spin correlations in magnetic metallic monolayers, deposited on a suitable substrate. The `spins' are the local moments set up by the itinerant electrons, and the key concept is the relativistic disordered local moment state, which represents the paramagnetic state of a set of local moments. The spin-spin correlations between these local moments are then extracted using the linear response formalism. The anisotropy is included in a fully relativistic treatment, based on the Dirac equation, and has a qualitative impact on noncollinear magnetic states, by lifting their chiral degeneracy. The theory is applied to Mn monolayers on the hexagonal (111) surfaces of Pd, Pt, Ag and Au. The presence of competing exchange interactions is highlighted by choosing different substrates, which favour either the row-wise antiferromagnetic state or the chiral triangular Néel state. We correlate the electronic structure with the magnetic properties, by comparing filled with partially filled substrate d--bands, and low vs high atomic number. The disagreement between theory and experiment for Mn$_1$/Ag(111) is addressed, and the nature of the magnetic domains found experimentally is suggested to be chiral.

Exchange interaction between magnetic adatoms on surfaces of noble metals

We present first principles calculations of the exchange interactions between magnetic impurities deposited on (001), (110) and (111) surfaces of Cu and Au and analyze them, in particular, in the asymptotic regime. For the (110) and the (111) surfaces we demonstrate that the interaction shows an oscillatory behavior as a function of the distance, R, of the impurities and that the amplitude of the oscillations decays as 1/R^2. Furthermore, the frequency of the oscillations is closely related to the length of the Fermi vector of the surface states existing on these surfaces. Due to the asymmetry of the the surface states' dispersion, the frequency of the oscillations becomes also asymmetric on the (110) surfaces, while on the Au(111) surface two distinct frequencies are found in the oscillations as a consequence of the Bychkov-Rashba splitting of the surface states. Remarkably, no long range oscillations of the exchange interaction are observed for the (001) surfaces where the surface states are unoccupied. When burying the impurities beneath the surface layer, oscillations mediated by the bulk states become visible.

Higher-order contributions to the Rashba-Bychkov effect with application to Bi/Ag(111) surface alloy

In order to explain the anisotropic Rashba-Bychkov effect observed in several metallic surface-state systems, we use k.p perturbation theory with a simple group-theoretical analysis and construct effective Rashba Hamiltonians for different point groups up to third order in the wavenumber. We perform relativistic ab initio calculations for the Bi/Ag(111) ordered surface alloy and from the calculated splitting of the band dispersion we find evidence of the predicted third-order terms. Furthermore, we derive expressions for the corresponding third-order Rashba parameters to provide a simple explanation to the qualitative difference concerning the Rashba-Bychkov splitting of the surface states at Au(111) and Bi/Ag(111).

Magnetic anisotropy of FePt: effect of lattice distortion and chemical disorder

We perform first principles calculations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy in the five L10 FePt samples studied experimentally by Ding et al. [J. App. Phys. 97, 10H303 (2005)]. The effect of temperature-induced spin fluctuations is estimated by scaling the MAE down according to previous Langevin dynamics simulations. Including chemical disorder as given in experiment, the experimental correlation between MAE and lattice mismatch is qualitatively well reproduced. Moreover we determine the chemical order parameters that reproduce exactly the experimental MAE of each sample. We conclude that the MAE is determined by the chemical disorder rather than by lattice distortion.

Thickness-dependent magnetic structure of ultrathin Fe/Ir(001) films: from spin-spiral states towards ferromagnetic order

We present a detailed study of the ground-state magnetic structure of ultrathin Fe films on the surface of fcc Ir(001). We use the spin-cluster expansion technique in combination with the relativistic disordered local moment scheme to obtain parameters of spin models and then determine the favored magnetic structure of the system by means of a mean field approach and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. For the case of a single monolayer of Fe we find that layer relaxations very strongly influence the ground-state spin configurations, whereas Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and biquadratic couplings also have remarkable effects. To characterize the latter effect we introduce and analyze spin collinearity maps of the system. While for two monolayers of Fe we find a single-q spin spiral as ground state due to DM interactions, for the case of four monolayers the system shows a noncollinear spin structure with nonzero net magnetization. These findings are consistent with experimental measurements indicating ferromagnetic order in films of four monolayers and thicker.

Atomistic spin-model based on a new spin-cluster expansion technique: Application to the IrMn3/Co interface

In order to derive tensorial exchange interactions and local magnetic anisotropies in itinerant magnetic systems, an approach combining the Spin-Cluster Expansion with the Relativistic Disordered Local Moment scheme is introduced. The theoretical background and computational aspects of the method are described in detail. The exchange interactions and site resolved anisotropy contributions for the IrMn3/Co(111) interface, a prototype for an exchange bias system, are calculated including a large number of magnetic sites from both the antiferromagnet and ferromagnet. Our calculations reveal that the coupling between the two subsystems is fairly limited to the vicinity of the interface. The magnetic anisotropy of the interface system is discussed, including effects of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that appear due to symmetry breaking at the interface.

Theory of anisotropic Rashba splitting of surface states

We investigate the surface Rashba effect for a surface of reduced in-plane symmetry. Formulating a k.p perturbation theory, we show that the Rashba splitting is anisotropic, in agreement with symmetry-based considerations. We show that the anisotropic Rashba splitting is due to the admixture of bulk states of different symmetry to the surface state, and it cannot be explained within the standard theoretical picture supposing just a normal-to-surface variation of the crystal potential. Performing relativistic ab initio calculations we find a remarkably large Rashba anisotropy for an unreconstructed Au(110) surface that is in the experimentally accessible range.

Chiral asymmetry of the spin-wave spectra in ultrathin magnetic films

We raise the possibility that the chiral degeneracy of the magnons in ultrathin films can be lifted due to the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. By using simple symmetry arguments, we discuss under which conditions such a chiral asymmetry occurs. We then perform relativistic first principles calculations for an Fe monolayer on W(110) and explicitly reveal the asymmetry of the spin-wave spectrum in case of wave-vectors parallel to the (001) direction. Furthermore, we quantitatively interpret our results in terms of a simplified spin-model by using calculated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors. Our theoretical prediction should inspire experiments to explore the asymmetry of spin-waves, with a particular emphasis on the possibility to measure the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in ultrathin films.

Theory of STM Spectroscopy of Kondo Ions on Metal Surfaces

The conduction electron density of states nearby a single magnetic impurity, as measured recently by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), is calculated. It is shown that the Kondo effect induces a narrow Fano resonance as an intrinsic feature in the conduction electron density of states. The line shape varies with the distance between STM tip and impurity, in qualitative agreement with experiments, and is sensitive to details of the band structure. For a Co impurity the experimentally observed width and shift of the Kondo resonance are in accordance with those obtained from a combination of band structure and strongly correlated calculations.
