Probing spin correlations using angle resolved photoemission in a coupled metallic/Mott insulator system

A nearly free electron metal and a Mott insulating state can be thought of as opposite ends of possibilities for the motion of electrons in a solid. In the magnetic oxide metal PdCrO$_{2}$, these two coexist as alternating layers. Using angle resolved photoemission, we surprisingly find sharp band-like features in the one-electron removal spectral function of the correlated subsystem. We show that these arise because a hole created in the Mott layer moves to and propagates in the metallic layer while retaining memory of the Mott layer's magnetism. This picture is quantitatively supported by a strong coupling analysis capturing the physics of PdCrO$_{2}$ in terms of a Kondo lattice Hamiltonian. Our findings open new routes to use the non-magnetic probe of photoemission to gain insights into the spin-susceptibility of correlated electron systems.

Magnetic Collapse and the Behavior of Transition Metal Oxides at High Pressure

We report a detail theoretical study of the electronic structure and phase stability of transition metal oxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO in their paramagnetic cubic B1 structure by employing dynamical mean-field theory of correlated electrons combined with \emph{ab initio} band structure methods (DFT+DMFT). Our calculations reveal that under pressure these materials exhibit a Mott insulator-metal transition (IMT) which is accompanied by a simultaneous collapse of local magnetic moments and lattice volume, implying a complex interplay between chemical bonding and electronic correlations. Moreover, our results for the transition pressure show a monotonous decrease from ~ 145 GPa to 40 GPa, upon moving from MnO to CoO. In contrast to that, in NiO, magnetic collapse is found to occur at remarkably higher pressure of ~ 429 GPa. We provide a unified picture of such a behavior and suggest that it is primary a localized to itinerant moment behavior transition at the IMT that gives rise to magnetic collapse in transition metal oxides.

d- and f-orbital correlations in the REFeAsO compounds

We estimate theoretically the strength of the local Coulomb interaction for the Fe 3d and Ce 4f shells in the REFeAsO compunds. In LaFeAsO and CeFeAsO we obtain values of the local Coulomb interaction parameter U for both Fe and Ce which are larger than those of elemental Fe and Ce metals. The Fe 3d bandwidth of REFeAsO is found to increase slightly as one moves along the RE-series. Using a combined local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approach, we study the behaviour of the localized 4f states along the rare-earth oxyarsenides REFeAsO series (RE=Ce,Pr,Nd). In CeFeAsO the occupied Ce 4f band is located just below the Fe 3d band leading possibly to a Kondo screening of the 4f local moment under applied pressure, while the unscreened local moment behaviour is expected for the Pr and Nd compounds.
