On the Explanation of the Paramagnetic Meissner Effect in Superconductor/Ferromagnet Heterostructures

An increase of the magnetic moment in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers V(40nm)/F [F$=$Fe(1,3nm), Co(3nm), Ni(3nm)] was observed using SQUID magnetometry upon cooling below the superconducting transition temperature Tc in magnetic fields of 10 Oe to 50 Oe applied parallel to the sample surface. A similar increase, often called the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME), was observed before in various superconductors and superconductor/ferromagnet systems. To explain the PME effect in the presented S/F bilayers a model based on a row of vortices located at the S/F interface is proposed. According to the model the magnetic moment induced below Tc consists of the paramagnetic contribution of the vortex cores and the diamagnetic contribution of the vortex-free region of the S layer. Since the thickness of the S layer is found to be 3-4 times less than the magnetic field penetration depth, this latter diamagnetic contribution is negligible. The model correctly accounts for the sign, the approximate magnitude and the field dependence of the paramagnetic and the Meissner contributions of the induced magnetic moment upon passing the superconducting transition of a ferromagnet/superconductor bilayer.

Magnetic proximity effect at interface between a cuprate superconductor and an oxide spin valve

Heterostructures consisting of a cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7x and a ruthenate/manganite (SrRuO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3) spin valve have been studied by SQUID magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonances and neutron reflectometry. It was shown that due to the influence of magnetic proximity effect a magnetic moment is induced in the superconducting part of heterostructure and at the same time the magnetic moment is suppressed in the ferromagnetic spin valve. The experimental value of magnetization induced in the superconductor has the same order of magnitude with the calculations based on the induced magnetic moment of Cu atoms due to orbital reconstruction at the superconductor-ferromagnetic interface. It corresponds also to the model that takes into account the change in the density of states at a distance of order of the coherence length in the superconductor. The experimentally obtained characteristic length of penetration of the magnetic moment into superconductor exceeds the coherence length for cuprate superconductor. This fact points on the dominance of the mechanism of the induced magnetic moment of Cu atoms due to orbital reconstruction.

Evidence for spin-triplet superconducting correlations in metal-oxide heterostructures with non-collinear magnetization

Heterostructures composed of ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, ferromagnetic SrRuO3, and superconducting YBa2Cu3Ox were studied experimentally. Structures of composition Au/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3/YBa2Cu3Ox were prepared by pulsed laser deposition, and their high quality was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and reflectometry. A non-collinear magnetic state of the heterostructures was revealed by means of SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry. We have further observed superconducting currents in mesa-structures fabricated by deposition of a second superconducting Nb layer on top of the heterostructure, followed by patterning with photolithography and ion-beam etching. Josephson effects observed in these mesa-structures can be explained by the penetration of a triplet component of the superconducting order parameter into the magnetic layers.

Structural and electronic properties of epitaxial YBaCuO/LaCaMnO bilayers grown on SrTiO$_3$ (110) substrates

Epitaxial bilayers of the high-temperature-superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) and the ferromagnetic metal La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on (110)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates, such that the CuO2 planes of YBCO are perpendicular to the YBCO-LCMO interface. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering demonstrate complete (110) orientation of both YBCO and LCMO overlayers. The resistivity and magnetization of the bilayer films are highly anisotropic. The critical temperatures for superconductivity and ferromagnetism as well as the saturation magnetization exhibit modest reductions compared to corresponding bulk values.

Structural, magnetic and superconducting characterization of the CuNi/Nb bilayers of the S/F type using Polarized Neutron Reflectometry and complementary techniques

Structural, magnetic, and superconducting properties of S/F bilayers Nb/Cu40Ni60 deposited on silicon substrate have been characterized using Polarized Neutron Reflectometry and complementary techniques. The study allowed to determine real thicknesses of the S and F layers as well as the r.m.s. roughness of the S/F interfaces. The latter does not exceed 1 nm, showing the high quality of the S/F interface. Using SQUID and a mutual inductance setup we determined the superconducting transition temperatures of the samples, which are in agreement with the literature data. Using of PNR for the single S layer allowed to determine the screening length lambda of the superconducting layer, lambda = 120 nm. This value is higher than the London penetration depth for pure niobium which may indicate that the superconductor is in the dirty limit. PNR and SQUID studies of magnetic properties of the CuNi layer have shown the presence of ferromagnetism in all investigated samples.

Long-range transfer of electron-phonon coupling in oxide superlattices

The electron-phonon interaction is of central importance for the electrical and thermal properties of solids, and its influence on superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and other many-body phenomena in correlated-electron materials is currently the subject of intense research. However, the non-local nature of the interactions between valence electrons and lattice ions, often compounded by a plethora of vibrational modes, present formidable challenges for attempts to experimentally control and theoretically describe the physical properties of complex materials. Here we report a Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in superlattices of the high-temperature superconductor $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ and the colossal-magnetoresistance compound $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ that suggests a new approach to this problem. We find that a rotational mode of the MnO$_6$ octahedra in $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ experiences pronounced superconductivity-induced lineshape anomalies, which scale linearly with the thickness of the $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ layers over a remarkably long range of several tens of nanometers. The transfer of the electron-phonon coupling between superlattice layers can be understood as a consequence of long-range Coulomb forces in conjunction with an orbital reconstruction at the interface. The superlattice geometry thus provides new opportunities for controlled modification of the electron-phonon interaction in complex materials.
