Reversing adiabatic state preparation in few-level quantum systems

We present a detailed study of an adiabatic state preparation in an effective three-level quantum system. States can be prepared with high speed and fidelity by adding a counterdiabatic (CD) quantum control protocol. As a second step, we invert the preparation protocol to get back to the initial state. This describes an overall cyclic evolution in state space. Using counterdiabatic terms, the resulting composed fast evolution can be repeated many times. We then analyze the control of Berry's phase along the adiabatic cyclic path and show that Berry's phase can act as a sensitive detector of non-perfect state transfer.

Bound state dynamics in the long-range spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ model

Experimental platforms based on trapped ions, cold molecules, and Rydberg atoms have made possible the investigation of highly-nonlocal spin-${1/2}$ Hamiltonians with long-range couplings. Here, we study the effects of such non-local couplings in the long-range spin-${1/2}$ XXZ Heisenberg Hamiltonian. We calculate explicitly the two-spin energy spectrum, which describes all possible energetic configurations of two spins pointing in a specific direction embedded in a background of spins with opposite orientation. For fast decay of the spin-spin couplings, we find that the two-spin energy spectrum is characterized by well-defined discrete values, corresponding to bound states, separated by a set of continuum states describing the scattering region. In the deep long-range regime instead, the bound states disappear as they get incorporated by the scattering region. The presence of two-spin bound states results to be crucial to determine both two- and many-spin dynamics. On one hand, radically different two-spin spreadings can be observed by tuning the decay of the spin couplings. On the other hand, two-spin bound states enable the dynamical stabilization of effective antiferromagnetic states in the presence of ferromagnetic couplings. Finally, we propose a novel scheme based on a trapped-ion quantum simulator to experimentally realize the long-range XXZ model and to study its out-of-equilibrium properties.

PT invariant Weyl semimetals in gauge symmetric systems

Weyl semimetals typically appear in systems in which either time-reversal (T) or inversion (P}) symmetry are broken. Here we show that in the presence of gauge potentials these topological states of matter can also arise in fermionic lattices preserving both T and P. We analyze in detail the case of a cubic lattice model with $π$-fluxes, discussing the role of gauge symmetries in the formation of Weyl points and the difference between the physical and the canonical T and P symmetries. Motivated by advances in ultracold atom experiments and by the possibility of using synthetic magnetic fields, we examine the robustness of the Weyl semimetal phase in the presence of trapping potentials and random perturbations of the magnetic fluxes, which can be compared to a local disorder in realistic scenarios.

Scaling of the entanglement spectrum near quantum phase transitions

The entanglement spectrum describing quantum correlations in many-body systems has been recently recognized as a key tool to characterize different quantum phases, including topological ones. Here we derive its analytically scaling properties in the vicinity of some integrable quantum phase transitions and extend our studies also to non integrable quantum phase transitions in one dimensional spin models numerically. Our analysis shows that, in all studied cases, the scaling of the difference between the two largest non degenerate Schmidt eigenvalues yields with good accuracy critical points and mass scaling exponents.

Topological phase transitions driven by non-Abelian gauge potentials in optical square lattices

We analyze a tight-binding model of ultracold fermions loaded in an optical square lattice and subjected to a synthetic non-Abelian gauge potential featuring both a magnetic field and a translationally invariant SU(2) term. We consider in particular the effect of broken time-reversal symmetry and its role in driving non-trivial topological phase transitions. By varying the spin-orbit coupling parameters, we find both a semimetal/insulator phase transition and a topological phase transition between insulating phases with different numbers of edge states. The spin is not a conserved quantity of the system and the topological phase transitions can be detected by analyzing its polarization in time of flight images, providing a clear diagnostic for the characterization of the topological phases through the partial entanglement between spin and lattice degrees of freedom.

Truncated Conformal Space Approach for Perturbed Wess-Zumino-Witten $SU(2)_k$ Models

We outline the application of the truncated conformal space approach (TCSA) to perturbations of $SU(2)_k$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theories. As examples of this methodology, we consider two distinct perturbations of $SU(2)_1$ and one of $SU(2)_2$. $SU(2)_1$ is first perturbed by its spin-1/2 field, a model which is equivalent to the sine-Gordon model at a particular value of its coupling $β$. The sine-Gordon spectrum is correctly reproduced as well as the corresponding finite size corrections. We next study $SU(2)_1$ with a marginal current-current perturbation. The TCSA results can be matched to perturbation theory within an appropriate treatment of the UV divergences. We find however that these results do not match field theoretic computations on the same model performed with a Lorentz invariant regulator. Finally, we consider $SU(2)_2$ perturbed by its spin-1 field, which is equivalent to three decoupled massive Majorana fermions. In this case as well the TCSA reproduces accurately the known spectrum.

Entanglement Spectrum, Critical Exponents and Order Parameters in Quantum Spin Chains

We investigate the entanglement spectrum near criticality in finite quantum spin chains. Using finite size scaling we show that when approaching a quantum phase transition, the Schmidt gap, i.e., the difference between the two largest eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix, signals the critical point and scales with universal critical exponents related to the relevant operators of the corresponding perturbed conformal field theory describing the critical point. Such scaling behavior allows us to identify explicitly the Schmidt gap as a local order parameter.

(3+1) Massive Dirac Fermions with Ultracold Atoms in Optical Lattices

We propose the experimental realization of (3+1) relativistic Dirac fermions using ultracold atoms in a rotating optical lattice or, alternatively, in a synthetic magnetic field. This approach has the advantage to give mass to the Dirac fermions by coupling the ultracold atoms to a Bragg pulse. A dimensional crossover from (3+1) to (2+1) Dirac fermions can be obtained by varying the anisotropy of the lattice. We also discuss under which conditions the interatomic potentials give rise to relativistically invariant interactions among the Dirac fermions.
