Magnetic impurities along the edge of a quantum spin Hall insulator: Realizing a one-dimensional AIII insulator

In this paper we construct a one-dimensional insulator with an approximate chiral symmetry belonging to the AIII class and discuss its properties. The construction principle is the intentional pollution of the edge of a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulator with magnetic impurities. The resulting bound states hybridize and disperse along the edge. We discuss under which circumstances this chain possesses zero-dimensional boundary modes on the level of an effective low-energy theory. The main appeal of our construction is the independence on details of the impurity lattice: the zero modes are stable against disorder and random lattice configurations. We also show that in the presence of Rashba coupling, which changes the symmetry class to A, one can still expect localized half-integer boundary excess charges protected by mirror symmetry although there is no nontrivial topological index. All of the results are confirmed numerically in a microscopic model.

Gauge Dependences of Higher-Order Corrections to NMSSM Higgs Boson Masses and the Charged Higgs Decay $H^\pm \to W^\pm h_i$

In this paper we compute the electroweak corrections to the charged Higgs boson decay into a $W$ boson and a neutral Higgs boson in the CP-conserving NMSSM. We calculate the process in a general $R_ξ$ gauge and investigate the dependence of the loop-corrected decay width on the gauge parameter $ξ$. The gauge dependence arises from the mixing of different loop orders. Phenomenology requires the inclusion of mass and mixing corrections to the external Higgs bosons in order to match the experimentally measured mass values. As a result, we move away from a strict one-loop calculation and consequently mix orders in perturbation theory. Moreover, determination of the loop-corrected masses in an iterative procedure also results in the mixing of different loop orders. Gauge dependence then arises from the mismatch with tree-level Goldstone boson couplings that are applied in the loop calculation, and from the gauge dependence of the loop-corrected masses themselves. We find that the gauge dependence is significant.

Universality and scaling in a charge two-channel Kondo device

We study a charge two-channel Kondo model, demonstrating that recent experiments [Iftikhar et al, Nature 526, 233 (2015)] realize an essentially perfect quantum simulation -- not just of its universal physics, but also nonuniversal effects away from the scaling limit. Numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations yield conductance lineshapes encoding RG flow to a critical point involving a free Majorana fermion. By mimicking the experimental protocol, the experimental curve is reproduced quantitatively over 9 orders of magnitude, although we show that far greater bandwidth/temperature separation is required to obtain the universal result. Fermi liquid instabilities are also studied: In particular, our exact analytic results for non-linear conductance provide predictions away from thermal equilibrium, in the regime of existing experiments.

Two-particle decay and quantum criticality in dimerized antiferromagnets

In certain Mott-insulating dimerized antiferromagnets, triplet excitations of the paramagnetic phase can decay into the two-particle continuum. When such a magnet undergoes a quantum phase transition into a magnetically ordered state, this coupling becomes part of the critical theory provided that the lattice ordering wavevector is zero. One microscopic example is the staggered-dimer antiferromagnet on the square lattice, for which deviations from O(3) universality have been reported in numerical studies. Using both symmetry arguments and microscopic calculations, we show that a non-trivial cubic term arises in the relevant order-parameter quantum field theory, and assess its consequences using a combination of analytical and numerical methods. We also present finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo data for the staggered-dimer antiferromagnet which complement recently published results. The data can be consistently interpreted in terms of critical exponents identical to that of the standard O(3) universality class, but with anomalously large corrections to scaling. We argue that the two-particle decay of critical triplons, although irrelevant in two spatial dimensions, is responsible for the leading corrections to scaling due to its small scaling dimension.

Magnetic structure of an imbalanced Fermi gas in an optical lattice

We analyze the repulsive fermionic Hubbard model on square and cubic lattices with spin imbalance and in the presence of a parabolic confinement. We analyze the magnetic structure as a function of the repulsive interaction strength and polarization. In the first part of the paper we perform unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations for the 2D case and find that above a critical interaction strength $U_c$ the system turns ferromagnetic at the edge of the trap, in agreement with the ferromagnetic Stoner instability of a homogeneous system away from half-filling. For $U<U_c$ we find a canted antiferromagnetic structure in the Mott region in the center and a partially polarized compressible edge. The antiferromagnetic order in the Mott plateau is perpendicular to the direction of the imbalance. In this regime the same qualitative behavior is expected for 2D and 3D systems. In the second part of the paper we give a general discussion of magnetic structures above $U_c$. We argue that spin conservation leads to nontrivial textures, both in the ferromagnetic polarization at the edge and for the Neel order in the Mott plateau. We discuss differences in magnetic structures for 2D and 3D cases.
