Valence state determines the band magnetocrystalline anisotropy in 2D rare-earth/noble-metal compounds

In intermetallic compounds with zero-orbital momentum ($L=0$) the magnetic anisotropy and the electronic band structure are interconnected. Here, we investigate this connection on divalent Eu and trivalent Gd intermetallic compounds. We find by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism an out-of-plane easy magetization axis in 2D atom-thick EuAu$_2$. Angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory prove that this is due to strong $f-d$ band hybridization and Eu$^{2+}$ valence. In contrast, the easy in-plane magnetization of the structurally-equivalent GdAu$_2$ is ruled by spin-orbit-split $d$-bands, notably Weyl nodal lines, occupied in the Gd$^{3+}$ state. Regardless of the $L$ value, we predict a similar itinerant electron contribution to the anisotropy of analogous compounds.

Galaxy cluster mass density profile derived using the submillimetre galaxies magnification bias

In this work we want to study the average mass density profile of tens to hundreds of clusters of galaxies acting as lenses that produce a magnification bias on the SMGs, and to estimate their associated masses and concentrations for different richness ranges. The background sample is composed of SMGs observed by Herschel with 1.2<z<4.0 (mean redshift at ~2.3) while the foreground sample is made up of galaxy clusters extracted from the SDSS III with photometric redshifts of 0.05< z< 0.8 (mean redshift at ~0.38). Measurements are obtained by stacking the SMG--cluster pairs to estimate the cross-correlation function using the Davis-Peebles estimator. This methodology allows us to derive the mass density profile for a wide range of angular scales, ~2-250 arcsec or ~10-1300 kpc for z=0.38, with a high radial resolution. We find that It is impossible to fit the data with a single mass density profile at all scales. As for the outer part, the estimated average masses increase from $M_{200c}=5.8$ to $51.5\times 10^{13} M_\odot$ and the concentration parameter from C=0.74 to 1.74. In the small-scale regions, the obtained average masses fluctuate around $M_{200c}=3-4 \times 10^{13}M_\odot$ with average C~4. The total average masses are in perfect agreement with the M-R relationship estimated from the cluster catalogue. While the estimated average C values of the central galactic halos are in agreement with traditional M-C relationships, we find low concentrations for the outer part. Moreover, C decrease for lower R values, probably indicating that the group of galaxies cannot be considered to be relaxed systems. Finally, we notice a systematic lack of signal at the transition between the dominance of the cluster halo and the central galactic halo (~100 kpc). This feature is also present in previous studies using different catalogues and/or methodologies, but is never discussed.

Construction of hazard maps of Hantavirus contagion using Remote Sensing, logistic regression and Artificial Neural Networks: case Araucanía Region, Chile

In this research, methods and computational results based on statistical analysis and mathematical modelling, data collection in situ in order to make a hazard map of Hanta Virus infection in the region of Araucania, Chile are presented. The development of this work involves several elements such as Landsat satellite images, biological information regarding seropositivity of Hanta Virus and information concerning positive cases of infection detected in the region. All this information has been processed to find a function that models the danger of contagion in the region, through logistic regression analysis and Artificial Neural Networks

Methods for analyzing surface texture effects of volcanoes with Plinian and subplinian eruptions types: Cases of study Lascar (23 S) and Chaiten (42 S), Chile

This paper presents a new methodology that provides the analysis of surface texture changes in areas adjacent to the volcano and its impact product of volcanic activity. To do this, algorithms from digital image processing such as the co-occurrence matrix and the wavelet transform are used. These methods are working on images taken by the Landsat satellite platform sensor 5 TM and Landsat 7 ETM + sensor, and implemented with the purpose of evaluating superficial changes that can warn of surface movements of the volcano. The results were evaluated by similarity metrics for grayscale images, and validated in two different scenarios that have the same type of eruption, but differ, essentially, in climate and vegetation. Finally, the proposed algorithm is presented, setting the parameters and constraints for implementation and use.
