Trigonometric real form of the spin RS model of Krichever and Zabrodin

We investigate the trigonometric real form of the spin Ruijsenaars-Schneider system introduced, at the level of equations of motion, by Krichever and Zabrodin in 1995. This pioneering work and all earlier studies of the Hamiltonian interpretation of the system were performed in complex holomorphic settings; understanding the real forms is a non-trivial problem. We explain that the trigonometric real form emerges from Hamiltonian reduction of an obviously integrable 'free' system carried by a spin extension of the Heisenberg double of the ${\rm U}(n)$ Poisson-Lie group. The Poisson structure on the unreduced real phase space ${\rm GL}(n,\mathbb{C}) \times \mathbb{C}^{nd}$ is the direct product of that of the Heisenberg double and $d\geq 2$ copies of a ${\rm U}(n)$ covariant Poisson structure on $\mathbb{C}^n \simeq \mathbb{R}^{2n}$ found by Zakrzewski, also in 1995. We reduce by fixing a group valued moment map to a multiple of the identity, and analyze the resulting reduced system in detail. In particular, we derive on the reduced phase space the Hamiltonian structure of the trigonometric spin Ruijsenaars-Schneider system and we prove its degenerate integrability.

On the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the trigonometric spin Ruijsenaars--Sutherland hierarchy

We report on the the trigonometric spin Ruijsenaars--Sutherland hierarchy derived recently by Poisson reduction of a bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy associated with free geodesic motion on the Lie group U(n). In particular, we give a direct proof of a previously stated result about the form of the second Poisson bracket in terms of convenient variables.

Reduction of a bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy on $T^*\mathrm{U}(n)$ to spin Ruijsenaars--Sutherland models

We first exhibit two compatible Poisson structures on the cotangent bundle of the unitary group $\mathrm{U}(n)$ in such a way that the invariant functions of the $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$-valued momenta generate a bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy. One of the Poisson structures is the canonical one and the other one arises from embedding the Heisenberg double of the Poisson-Lie group $\mathrm{U}(n)$ into $T^*\mathrm{U}(n)$, and subsequently extending the embedded Poisson structure to the full cotangent bundle. We then apply Poisson reduction to the bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy on $T^*\mathrm{U}(n)$ using the conjugation action of $\mathrm{U}(n)$, for which the ring of invariant functions is closed under both Poisson brackets. We demonstrate that the reduced hierarchy belongs to the overlap of well-known trigonometric spin Sutherland and spin Ruijsenaars--Schneider type integrable many-body models, which receive a bi-Hamiltonian interpretation via our treatment.

Trigonometric and elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider systems on the complex projective space

We present a direct construction of compact real forms of the trigonometric and elliptic $n$-particle Ruijsenaars-Schneider systems whose completed center-of-mass phase space is the complex projective space $\mathbb{CP}^{n-1}$ with the Fubini-Study symplectic structure. These systems are labelled by an integer $p\in\{1,\dots,n-1\}$ relative prime to $n$ and a coupling parameter $y$ varying in a certain punctured interval around $pπ/n$. Our work extends Ruijsenaars's pioneering study of compactifications that imposed the restriction $0<y<π/n$, and also builds on an earlier derivation of more general compact trigonometric systems by Hamiltonian reduction.

Equivalence of two sets of Hamiltonians associated with the rational BC(n) Ruijsenaars-Schneider-van Diejen system

The equivalence of two complete sets of Poisson commuting Hamiltonians of the (super)integrable rational BC(n) Ruijsenaars-Schneider-van Diejen system is established. Specifically, the commuting Hamiltonians constructed by van Diejen are shown to be linear combinations of the Hamiltonians generated by the characteristic polynomial of the Lax matrix obtained recently by Pusztai, and the explicit formula of this invertible linear transformation is found.

Generalized spin Sutherland systems revisited

We present generalizations of the spin Sutherland systems obtained earlier by Blom and Langmann and by Polychronakos in two different ways: from SU(n) Yang--Mills theory on the cylinder and by constraining geodesic motion on the N-fold direct product of SU(n) with itself, for any N>1. Our systems are in correspondence with the Dynkin diagram automorphisms of arbitrary connected and simply connected compact simple Lie groups. We give a finite-dimensional as well as an infinite-dimensional derivation and shed light on the mechanism whereby they lead to the same classical integrable systems. The infinite-dimensional approach, based on twisted current algebras (alias Yang--Mills with twisted boundary conditions), was inspired by the derivation of the spinless Sutherland model due to Gorsky and Nekrasov. The finite-dimensional method relies on Hamiltonian reduction under twisted conjugations of N-fold direct product groups, linking the quantum mechanics of the reduced systems to representation theory similarly as was explored previously in the N=1 case.

Duality between the trigonometric BC(n) Sutherland system and a completed rational Ruijsenaars-Schneider-van Diejen system

We present a new case of duality between integrable many-body systems, where two systems live on the action-angle phase spaces of each other in such a way that the action variables of each system serve as the particle positions of the other one. Our investigation utilizes an idea that was exploited previously to provide group-theoretic interpretation for several dualities discovered originally by Ruijsenaars. In the group-theoretic framework one applies Hamiltonian reduction to two Abelian Poisson algebras of invariants on a higher dimensional phase space and identifies their reductions as action and position variables of two integrable systems living on two different models of the single reduced phase space. Taking the cotangent bundle of U(2n) as the upstairs space, we demonstrate how this mechanism leads to a new dual pair involving the BC(n) trigonometric Sutherland system. Thereby we generalize earlier results pertaining to the A(n) trigonometric Sutherland system as well as a recent work by Pusztai on the hyperbolic BC(n) Sutherland system.

Action-angle map and duality for the open Toda lattice in the perspective of Hamiltonian reduction

An alternative derivation of the known action-angle map of the standard open Toda lattice is presented based on its identification as the natural map between two gauge slices in the relevant symplectic reduction of the cotangent bundle of $GL(n,{\mathbb R})$. This then permits to interpret Ruijsenaars' action-angle duality for the Toda system in the same group-theoretic framework which was established previously for Calogero type systems.

An application of the reduction method to Sutherland type many-body systems

We study Hamiltonian reductions of the free geodesic motion on a non-compact simple Lie group using as reduction group the direct product of a maximal compact subgroup and the fixed point subgroup of an arbitrary involution commuting with the Cartan involution. In general, we describe the reduced system that arises upon restriction to a dense open submanifold and interpret it as a spin Sutherland system. This dense open part yields the full reduced system in important special examples without spin degrees of freedom, which include the BC(n) Sutherland system built on 3 arbitrary couplings for m<n positively charged and (n-m) negatively charged particles moving on the half-line.

New compact forms of the trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider system

The reduction of the quasi-Hamiltonian double of ${\mathrm{SU}}(n)$ that has been shown to underlie Ruijsenaars' compactified trigonometric $n$-body system is studied in its natural generality. The constraints contain a parameter $y$, restricted in previous works to $0<y < π/n$ because Ruijsenaars' original compactification relies on an equivalent condition. It is found that allowing generic $0<y<π/2$ results in the appearance of new self-dual compact forms, of two qualitatively different types depending on the value of $y$. The type (i) cases are similar to the standard case in that the reduced phase space comes equipped with globally smooth action and position variables, and turns out to be symplectomorphic to ${\mathbb{C}P^{n-1}}$ as a Hamiltonian toric manifold. In the type (ii) cases both the position variables and the action variables develop singularities on a nowhere dense subset. A full classification is derived for the parameter $y$ according to the type (i) versus type (ii) dichotomy. The simplest new type (i) systems, for which $π/n < y < π/(n-1)$, are described in some detail as an illustration.

On the spectra of the quantized action-variables of the compactified Ruijsenaars-Schneider system

A simple derivation of the spectra of the action-variables of the quantized compactified Ruijsenaars-Schneider system is presented. The spectra are obtained by combining Kahler quantization with the identification of the classical action-variables as a standard toric moment map on the complex projective space. The result is consistent with the Schrodinger quantization of the system worked out previously by van Diejen and Vinet.

Self-duality of the compactified Ruijsenaars-Schneider system from quasi-Hamiltonian reduction

The Delzant theorem of symplectic topology is used to derive the completely integrable compactified Ruijsenaars-Schneider III(b) system from a quasi-Hamiltonian reduction of the internally fused double SU(n) x SU(n). In particular, the reduced spectral functions depending respectively on the first and second SU(n) factor of the double engender two toric moment maps on the III(b) phase space CP(n-1) that play the roles of action-variables and particle-positions. A suitable central extension of the SL(2,Z) mapping class group of the torus with one boundary component is shown to act on the quasi-Hamiltonian double by automorphisms and, upon reduction, the standard generator S of the mapping class group is proved to descend to the Ruijsenaars self-duality symplectomorphism that exchanges the toric moment maps. We give also two new presentations of this duality map: one as the composition of two Delzant symplectomorphisms and the other as the composition of three Dehn twist symplectomorphisms realized by Goldman twist flows. Through the well-known relation between quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds and moduli spaces, our results rigorously establish the validity of the interpretation [going back to Gorsky and Nekrasov] of the III(b) system in terms of flat SU(n) connections on the one-holed torus.

Superintegrability of rational Ruijsenaars-Schneider systems and their action-angle duals

We explain that the action-angle duality between the rational Ruijsenaars-Schneider and hyperbolic Sutherland systems implies immediately the maximal superintegrability of these many-body systems. We also present a new direct proof of the Darboux form of the reduced symplectic structure that arises in the `Ruijsenaars gauge' of the symplectic reduction underlying this case of action-angle duality. The same arguments apply to the BC(n) generalization of the pertinent dual pair, which was recently studied by Pusztai developing a method utilized in our direct calculation of the reduced symplectic structure.

The Ruijsenaars self-duality map as a mapping class symplectomorphism

This is a brief review of the main results of our paper arXiv:1101.1759 that contains a complete global treatment of the compactified trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider system by quasi-Hamiltonian reduction. Confirming previous conjectures of Gorsky and collaborators, we have rigorously established the interpretation of the system in terms of flat SU(n) connections on the one-holed torus and demonstrated that its self-duality symplectomorphism represents the natural action of the standard mapping class generator S on the phase space. The pertinent quasi-Hamiltonian reduced phase space turned out to be symplectomorphic to the complex projective space equipped with a multiple of the Fubini-Study symplectic form and two toric moment maps playing the roles of particle-positions and action-variables that are exchanged by the duality map. Open problems and possible directions for future work are also discussed.

An integrable BC(n) Sutherland model with two types of particles

A hyperbolic BC(n) Sutherland model involving three independent coupling constants that characterize the interactions of two types of particles moving on the half-line is derived by Hamiltonian reduction of the free geodesic motion on the group SU(n,n). The symmetry group underlying the reduction is provided by the direct product of the fixed point subgroups of two commuting involutions of SU(n,n). The derivation implies the integrability of the model and yields a simple algorithm for constructing its solutions.

Derivations of the trigonometric BC(n) Sutherland model by quantum Hamiltonian reduction

The BC(n) Sutherland Hamiltonian with coupling constants parametrized by three arbitrary integers is derived by reductions of the Laplace operator of the group U(N). The reductions are obtained by applying the Laplace operator on spaces of certain vector valued functions equivariant under suitable symmetric subgroups of U(N)\times U(N). Three different reduction schemes are considered, the simplest one being the compact real form of the reduction of the Laplacian of GL(2n,C) to the complex BC(n) Sutherland Hamiltonian previously studied by Oblomkov.

On the superintegrability of the rational Ruijsenaars-Schneider model

The rational and hyperbolic Ruijsenaars-Schneider models and their non-relativistic limits are maximally superintegrable since they admit action variables with globally well-defined canonical conjugates. In the case of the rational Ruijsenaars-Schneider model we present an alternative proof of the superintegrability by explicitly exhibiting extra conserved quantities relying on a generalization of the construction of Wojciechowski for the rational Calogero model.

Poisson-Lie interpretation of trigonometric Ruijsenaars duality

A geometric interpretation of the duality between two real forms of the complex trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider system is presented. The phase spaces of the systems in duality are viewed as two different models of the same reduced phase space arising from a suitable symplectic reduction of the standard Heisenberg double of U(n). The collections of commuting Hamiltonians of the systems in duality are shown to descend from two families of `free' Hamiltonians on the double which are dual to each other in a Poisson-Lie sense. Our results give rise to a major simplification of Ruijsenaars' proof of the crucial symplectomorphism property of the duality map.

Trigonometric Sutherland systems and their Ruijsenaars duals from symplectic reduction

Besides its usual interpretation as a system of $n$ indistinguishable particles moving on the circle, the trigonometric Sutherland system can be viewed alternatively as a system of distinguishable particles on the circle or on the line, and these 3 physically distinct systems are in duality with corresponding variants of the rational Ruijsenaars-Schneider system. We explain that the 3 duality relations, first obtained by Ruijsenaars in 1995, arise naturally from the Kazhdan-Kostant-Sternberg symplectic reductions of the cotangent bundles of the group U(n) and its covering groups $U(1) \times SU(n)$ and ${\mathbb R}\times SU(n)$, respectively. This geometric interpretation enhances our understanding of the duality relations and simplifies Ruijsenaars' original direct arguments that led to their discovery.

A class of Calogero type reductions of free motion on a simple Lie group

The reductions of the free geodesic motion on a non-compact simple Lie group G based on the $G_+ \times G_+$ symmetry given by left- and right multiplications for a maximal compact subgroup $G_+ \subset G$ are investigated. At generic values of the momentum map this leads to (new) spin Calogero type models. At some special values the `spin' degrees of freedom are absent and we obtain the standard $BC_n$ Sutherland model with three independent coupling constants from SU(n+1,n) and from SU(n,n). This generalization of the Olshanetsky-Perelomov derivation of the $BC_n$ model with two independent coupling constants from the geodesics on $G/G_+$ with G=SU(n+1,n) relies on fixing the right-handed momentum to a non-zero character of $G_+$. The reductions considered permit further generalizations and work at the quantized level, too, for non-compact as well as for compact G.

Explicit description of twisted Wakimoto realizations of affine Lie algebras

In a vertex algebraic framework, we present an explicit description of the twisted Wakimoto realizations of the affine Lie algebras in correspondence with an arbitrary finite order automorphism and a compatible integral gradation of a complex simple Lie algebra. This yields generalized free field realizations of the twisted and untwisted affine Lie algebras in any gradation. The free field form of the twisted Sugawara formula and examples are also exhibited.

Stability analysis of some integrable Euler equations for SO(n)

A family of special cases of the integrable Euler equations on $so(n)$ introduced by Manakov in 1976 is considered. The equilibrium points are found and their stability is studied. Heteroclinic orbits are constructed that connect unstable equilibria and are given by the orbits of certain 1-parameter subgroups of SO(n). The results are complete in the case $n=4$ and incomplete for $n>4$.

Adler-Kostant-Symes systems as Lagrangian gauge theories

It is well known that the integrable Hamiltonian systems defined by the Adler-Kostant-Symes construction correspond via Hamiltonian reduction to systems on cotangent bundles of Lie groups. Generalizing previous results on Toda systems, here a Lagrangian version of the reduction procedure is exhibited for those cases for which the underlying Lie algebra admits an invariant scalar product. This is achieved by constructing a Lagrangian with gauge symmetry in such a way that, by means of the Dirac algorithm, this Lagrangian reproduces the Adler-Kostant-Symes system whose Hamiltonian is the quadratic form associated with the scalar product on the Lie algebra.

Regular Conjugacy Classes in the Weyl Group and Integrable Hierarchies

Generalized KdV hierarchies associated by Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction to grade one regular semisimple elements from non-equivalent Heisenberg subalgebras of a loop algebra $\G\otimes{\bf C}[λ,λ^{-1}]$ are studied. The graded Heisenberg subalgebras containing such elements are labelled by the regular conjugacy classes in the Weyl group ${\bf W}(\G)$ of the simple Lie algebra $\G$. A representative $w\in {\bf W}(\G)$ of a regular conjugacy class can be lifted to an inner automorphism of $\G$ given by $\hat w=\exp\left(2iπ{\rm ad I_0}/m\right)$, where $I_0$ is the defining vector of an $sl_2$ subalgebra of $\G$.The grading is then defined by the operator $d_{m,I_0}=mλ{d\over dλ} + {\rm ad} I_0$ and any grade one regular element $Λ$ from the Heisenberg subalgebra associated to $[w]$ takes the form $Λ= (C_+ +λC_-)$, where $[I_0, C_-]=-(m-1) C_-$ and $C_+$ is included in an $sl_2$ subalgebra containing $I_0$. The largest eigenvalue of ${\rm ad}I_0$ is $(m-1)$ except for some cases in $F_4$, $E_{6,7,8}$. We explain how these Lie algebraic results follow from known results and apply them to construct integrable systems. If the largest ${\rm ad} I_0$ eigenvalue is $(m-1)$, then using any grade one regular element from the Heisenberg subalgebra associated to $[w]$ we can construct a KdV system possessing the standard $\W$-algebra defined by $I_0$ as its second Poisson bracket algebra. For $\G$ a classical Lie algebra, we derive pseudo-differential Lax operators for those non-principal KdV systems that can be obtained as discrete reductions of KdV systems related to $gl_n$. Non-abelian Toda systems are also considered.
