Study of the renormalization of BRST invariant local composite operators in the $U(1)$ Higgs model

The renormalization properties of two local BRST invariant composite operators, $(O,V_μ)$, corresponding respectively to the gauge invariant description of the Higgs particle and of the massive gauge vector boson, are scrutinized in the $U(1)$ Higgs model by means of the algebraic renormalization setup. Their renormalization $Z$'s factors are explicitly evaluated at one-loop order in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme by taking into due account the mixing with other gauge invariant operators. In particular, it turns out that the operator $V_μ$ mixes with the gauge invariant quantity $\partial_νF_{μν}$, which has the same quantum numbers, giving rise to a $2 \times 2$ mixing matrix. Moreover, two additional powerful Ward identities exist which enable us to determine the whole set of $Z$'s factors entering the $2 \times 2$ mixing matrix as well as the $Z$ factor of the operator $O$ in a purely algebraic way. An explicit check of these Ward identities is provided. The final setup obtained allows for computing perturbatively the full renormalized result for any $n$-point correlation function of the scalar and vector composite operators.

A local and BRST-invariant Yang-Mills theory within the Gribov horizon

We present a local setup for the recently introduced BRST-invariant formulation of Yang-Mills theories for linear covariant gauges that takes into account the existence of gauge copies à la Gribov and Zwanziger. Through the convenient use of auxiliary fields, including one of the Stueckelberg type, it is shown that both the action and the associated nilpotent BRST operator can be put in local form. Direct consequences of this fully local and BRST-symmetric framework are drawn from its Ward identities: (i) an exact prediction for the longitudinal part of the gluon propagator in linear covariant gauges that is compatible with recent lattice results and (ii) a proof of the gauge-parameter independence of all correlation functions of local BRST-invariant operators.

A local and renormalizable framework for the gauge-invariant operator $A^2_{\min}$ in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in linear covariant gauges

We address the issue of the renormalizability of the gauge-invariant non-local dimension-two operator $A^2_{\rm min}$, whose minimization is defined along the gauge orbit. Despite its non-local character, we show that the operator $A^2_{\rm min}$ can be cast in local form through the introduction of an auxiliary Stueckelberg field. The localization procedure gives rise to an unconventional kind of Stueckelberg-type action which turns out to be renormalizable to all orders of perturbation theory. In particular, as a consequence of its gauge invariance, the anomalous dimension of the operator $A^2_{\rm min}$ turns out to be independent from the gauge parameter $α$ entering the gauge-fixing condition, being thus given by the anomalous dimension of the operator $A^2$ in the Landau gauge.

Confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in a non-perturbative renormalizable quark model

Inspired by the construction of the Gribov-Zwanziger action in the Landau gauge, we introduce a quark model exhibiting both confinement and chiral symmetry aspects. An important feature is the incorporation of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in a renormalizable fashion. The quark propagator in the condensed vacuum turns out to be of a confining type. Besides a real pole, it exhibits complex conjugate poles. The resulting spectral form is explicitly shown to violate positivity, indicative of its unphysical character. Moreover, the ensuing quark mass function fits well to existing lattice data. To further validate the physical nature of the model, we identify a massless pseudoscalar (i.e. a pion) in the chiral limit and present estimates for the rho meson mass and decay constant.

More on the non-perturbative Gribov-Zwanziger quantization of linear covariant gauges

In this paper, we discuss the gluon propagator in the linear covariant gauges in $D=2,3,4$ Euclidean dimensions. Non-perturbative effects are taken into account via the so-called Refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework. We point out that, as in the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges, for $D=3,4$, the gluon propagator displays a massive (decoupling) behaviour, while for $D=2$, a scaling one emerges. All results are discussed in a setup that respects the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry, through a recently introduced non-perturbative BRST transformation. We also propose a minimizing functional that could be used to construct a lattice version of our non-perturbative definition of the linear covariant gauge.

On the gauge-invariant operator $A^2_{\min}$ in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories

We review our recent work on the gauge-invariant non-local dimension-two operator $A^2_{\rm min}$, whose minimization is defined along the gauge orbit. Albeit non-local, the operator $A^2_{\rm min}$ can be cast in local form through the introduction of an auxiliary Stueckelberg field. The whole procedure results into a local action which turns out to be renormalizable to all orders.

On general ultraviolet properties of a class of confining propagators

We study the ultraviolet properties of theories whose fundamental fields display a confining, Gribov-type, propagator. These are propagators that exhibit complex poles and violate positivity, thus precluding a physical propagating particle interpretation. We show that the properties of this type of confining propagators do not change the ultraviolet behavior of the theory, in the sense that no new ultraviolet primitive divergences are generated, thus securing the renormalizability of these confining theories. We illustrate these properties by studying a variety of models, including bosonic and fermionic confined degrees of freedom. The more intricate case of Super Yang-Mills with ${\cal N} =1$ supersymmetries in the Wess-Zumino gauge is taken as example in order to prove these statements to all orders by means of the algebraic renormalization set up.

Thermodynamics of an exactly solvable confining quark model

The grand partition function of a model of confined quarks is exactly calculated at arbitrary temperatures and quark chemical potentials. The model is inspired by a softly BRST-broken version of QCD and possesses a quark mass function compatible with nonperturbative analyses of lattice simulations and Dyson-Schwinger equations. Even though the model is defined at tree level, we show that it produces a nontrivial and stable thermodynamic behaviour at any temperature or chemical potential. Results for the pressure, the entropy and the trace anomaly as a function of the temperature are qualitatively compatible with the effect of nonperturbative interactions as observed in lattice simulations. The finite density thermodynamics is also shown to contain nontrivial features, being far away from an ideal gas picture.

Implementing the Gribov-Zwanziger framework in N=1 Super Yang-Mills in the Landau gauge

The Gribov-Zwanziger framework accounting for the existence of Gribov copies is extended to N=1 Super Yang--Mills theories quantized in the Landau gauge. We show that the restriction of the domain of integration in the Euclidean functional integral to the first Gribov horizon can be implemented in a way to recover non-perturbative features of N=1 Super Yang--Mills theories, namely: the existence of the gluino condensate as well as the vanishing of the vacuum energy.

On the irrelevance of the Gribov issue in N=4 Super Yang-Mills in the Landau gauge

The issue of the Gribov copies is discussed in Euclidean N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory quantized in the Landau gauge. As a consequence of the absence of a renormalization group invariant scale, it turns out that it is not possible to attach a dynamical meaning to the Gribov parameter. This implies that, in N=4 Super Yang-Mills, there is no need for the restriction of the domain of integration in the functional integral to the Gribov region, and no non-perturbative dynamical scale is generated. This result is in agreement with the absence of a confining phase observed from the Coulomb behaviour of the Wilson loop evaluated through the AdS/CFT correspondence. The non-renormalization theorem of the gluon-ghost-antighost vertex of the Landau gauge is also explicitly checked till three loops.

Properties of the Faddeev-Popov operator in the Landau gauge, matter confinement and soft BRST breaking

In light of the development of the Gribov issue for pure Euclidean gauge theories and of the recent lattice measurement of soft breaking of the BRST invariance in Yang-Mills theories in the Landau gauge, we consider non-perturbative features in the gauge-interacting matter sector and their relation with general properties of the Faddeev-Popov operator. A signature for BRST breaking in the matter sector is proposed and a local and renormalizable framework is constructed, accommodating this signature and predicting non-perturbative matter propagators that are consistent with available lattice data for adjoint scalars and quarks.

An all-order proof of the equivalence between Gribov's no-pole and Zwanziger's horizon conditions

The quantization of non-Abelian gauge theories is known to be plagued by Gribov copies. Typical examples are the copies related to zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator, which give rise to singularities in the ghost propagator. In this work we present an exact and compact expression for the ghost propagator as a function of external gauge fields, in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge. It is shown, to all orders, that the condition for the ghost propagator not to have a pole, the so-called Gribov's no-pole condition, can be implemented by demanding a nonvanishing expectation value for a functional of the gauge fields that turns out to be Zwanziger's horizon function. The action allowing to implement this condition is the Gribov-Zwanziger action. This establishes in a precise way the equivalence between Gribov's no-pole condition and Zwanziger's horizon condition.

Physical spectrum from confined excitations in a Yang-Mills-inspired toy model

We study a toy model for an interacting scalar field theory in which the fundamental excitations are confined in the sense of having unphysical, positivity-violating propagators, a fact tracing back to a decomposition of these in propagators with complex conjugate mass poles (the so-called $i$-particles). Similar two-point functions show up in certain approaches to gluon or quark propagators in Yang-Mills gauge theories. We investigate the spectrum of our model and show that suitable composite operators may be constructed having a well-defined Källén-Lehmann spectral representation, thus allowing for a particle interpretation. These physical excitations would correspond to the "mesons" of the model, the latter being bound states of two unphysical $i$-particles. The meson mass is explicitly estimated from the pole emerging in a resummed class of diagrams. The main purpose of this paper is thus to explicitly verify how a real mass pole can and does emerge out of constituent $i$-particles that have complex masses.

Chiral transition in a finite system and possible use of finite size scaling in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We investigate finite-size effects on the chiral phase diagram of strong interactions within the linear sigma model coupled to quarks. We estimate the modification of the pseudocritical transition line and isentropic trajectories for sizes that are representative of the systems created in relativistic heavy ion collision experiments. The corrections are clearly non-negligible and might significantly affect signatures of the chiral critical endpoint based on estimates for an infinite system. We argue that a finite-size scaling analysis should be tested in the process of data analysis of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC and in future experiments at FAIR-GSI, through the use of full scaling plots and a chi-squared method as tools for searching the critical endpoint.

Surface tension in the cold and dense chiral transition and astrophysical applications

The surface tension of cold and dense QCD phase transitions has appeared recently as a key ingredient in different astrophysical scenarios, ranging from core-colapse supernovae explosions to compact star structure. If the surface tension is low enough, observable consequences are possible. Its value is however not known from first-principle methods in QCD, calling for effective approaches. Working within the framework of homogeneous nucleation by Langer, we discuss the steps that are needed to obtain the nucleation parameters from a given effective potential. As a model for deriving the effective potential for the chiral transition, we adopt the linear sigma model with constituent quarks at very low temperatures, which provides an effective description for the thermodynamics of the strong interaction in cold and dense matter, and predict a surface tension of Sigma ~ 5--15 MeV/fm^2, well below previous estimates. Including temperature effects and vacuum logarithmic corrections, we find a clear competition between these features in characterizing the dynamics of the chiral phase conversion.

Quark mass and isospin dependence of the deconfining critical temperature

We describe the deconfining critical temperature dependence on the pion mass and on the isospin chemical potential in remarkably good agreement with lattice data. Our framework incorporates explicit dependence on quark masses, isospin and baryonic chemical potentials for the case of two flavors through ingredients from well-known high- and low-energy theories. In the low-energy sector, the system is described by a minimal chiral perturbation theory effective action, corresponding to a hot gas of pion quasiparticles and heavy nucleons. For the high-temperature sector we adopt a simple extension of the fuzzy bag model. We also briefly discuss the effects of mass asymmetry and baryon chemical potential.
