The infrared Yang-Mills wave functional due to percolating center vortices

Inspired by the center-vortex dominance in the infrared sector of $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory observed on the lattice, we propose a vacuum wave functional localized on an ensemble of correlated center vortices endowed with stiffness and magnetic monopoles that change the orientation of the vortex flux. In the electric-field representation, this wave functional becomes an effective partition function for N complex scalar fields. The inclusion of both oriented and non-oriented vortices as well as so-called N-vortex matchings leads to an effective potential that has only a center symmetry left. In the center-vortex condensed phase, this symmetry is spontaneously broken. In this case, the Wilson loop average can be approximated by a solitonic saddle-point localized around the minimal surface. The asymptotic string tension thus obtained displays Casimir scaling.

Renormalizability of a first principles Yang-Mills center-vortex ensemble

Recently, a new procedure to quantize the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in the nonperturbative regime was proposed. The idea is to divide the configuration space $\{A_μ\}$ into sectors labeled by different topological degrees of freedom and fix the gauge separately on each one of them. As Singer's theorem on gauge copies only refers to gauge fixing conditions that are global in $\{A_μ\}$, this construction might avoid the Gribov problem. In this work, we present a proof of the renormalizability in the center-vortex sectors, thus establishing the calculability of the Yang-Mills center-vortex ensemble.

Renormalizability of the center-vortex free sector of Yang-Mills theory

In this work, we analyzed a recent proposal to detect $SU(N)$ continuum Yang-Mills sectors labeled by center vortices, inspired by Laplacian-type center gauges in the lattice. Initially, after the introduction of appropriate external sources, we obtained a rich set of sector-dependent Ward identities, which can be used to control the form of the divergences. Next, we were able to show the all-order multiplicative renormalizability of the center-vortex free sector. These are important steps towards the establishment of a first principles, well-defined, and calculable Yang-Mills ensemble.

3D Yang-Mills confining properties from a non-Abelian ensemble perspective

In this work, we propose a $3D$ ensemble measure for center-vortex worldlines and chains equipped with non-Abelian degrees of freedom. We derive an effective field description for the center-element average where the vortices get represented by $N$ flavors of effective Higgs fields transforming in the fundamental representation. This field content is required to accommodate fusion rules where $N$ vortices can be created out of the vacuum. The inclusion of the chain sector, formed by center-vortex worldlines attached to pointlike defects, leads to a discrete set of $Z(N)$ vacua. This type of SSB pattern supports the formation of a stable domain wall between quarks, thus accommodating not only a linear potential but also the Lüscher term. Moreover, after a detailed analysis of the associated field equations, the asymptotic string tension turns out to scale with the quadratic Casimir of the antisymmetric quark representation. These behaviors reproduce those derived from Monte Carlo simulations in $SU(N)$ $3D$ Yang-Mills theory, which lacked understanding in the framework of confinement as due to percolating magnetic defects.

Pattern revivals from fractional Gouy phases in structured light

We investigate pattern revivals in specially designed optical structures that combine different transverse modes. In general, the resulting pattern is not preserved under free propagation and gets transformed due to non synchronized Gouy phases. However, it is possible to build structures in which the Gouy phases synchronize at specific fractional values, thus recovering the initial pattern at the corresponding longitudinal positions. This effect is illustrated with a radially structured light spot in which the beam energy can be addressed to different positions without the need of intermediate optical components, what can be useful for optical communications and optical tweezing with structured beams.

Quantum effects due to a moving Dirichlet point

We study quantum effects induced by a point-like object that imposes Dirichlet boundary conditions along its world-line, on a real scalar field $φ$ in 1, 2 and 3 spatial dimensions. The boundary conditions result from the strong coupling limit of a term quadratic in the field and localized on the particle's trajectory. We discuss the renormalization issues that appear and evaluate the effective action. Special attention is paid to the case of 2 spatial dimensions where the coupling constant is adimensional.

BPS center vortices in nonrelativistic SU(N) gauge models with adjoint Higgs fields

In this work, we propose a class of SU(N) Yang-Mills models, with adjoint Higgs fields, that accept BPS center vortex equations. The lack of a local magnetic flux that could serve as an energy bound is circumvented by including a new term in the energy functional. This term tends to align, in the Lie algebra, the magnetic field and one of the adjoint Higgs fields. Finally, a reduced set of equations for the center vortex profile functions is obtained (for N=2,3). In particular, Z(3) BPS vortices come in three colours and three anticolours, obtained from an ansatz based on the defining representation and its conjugate.

Detecting topological sectors in continuum Yang-Mills theory and the fate of BRST symmetry

In this work, motivated by Laplacian type center gauges in the lattice, designed to avoid the Gribov problem, we introduce a new family of gauge fixings for pure Yang-Mills theories in the continuum. This procedure separates the partition function into partial contributions associated with different sectors, containing center vortices and correlated monopoles. We show that, on each sector, the gauge fixed path-integral displays a BRST symmetry, however, it cannot be globally extended due to sector dependent boundary conditions on the ghost fields. These are nice features as they would permit to discuss the independence of the partial contributions on gauge parameters,, while opening a window for the space of quantum states to be different from the perturbative one, which would be implied if topological configurations were removed.

Coloured loops in 4D and their effective field representation

Gaining insight about ensembles of magnetic configurations, that could originate the confining string tension between quarks, constitutes a major concern in current lattice investigations. This interest also applies to a different approach, where gauge models with spontaneous symmetry breaking are constructed to describe the confining string as a smooth vortex solution. In this article, we initially show how to incorporate non Abelian information into an ensemble of monopoles in $4D$, characterized by phenomenological parameters. Next, using some recent techniques developed for polymers, we were able to relate the coloured ensemble with a non Abelian gauge model. This could offer an interesting perspective to discuss some of the different approaches to describe confinement.

Non Abelian structures and the geometric phase of entangled qudits

In this work, we address some important topological and algebraic aspects of two-qudit states evolving under local unitary operations. The projective invariant subspaces and evolutions are connected with the common elements characterizing the su(d) Lie algebra and their representations. In particular, the roots and weights turn out to be natural quantities to parametrize cyclic evolutions and fractional phases. This framework is then used to recast the coset contribution to the geometric phase in a form that generalizes the usual monopole-like formula for a single qubit.

preprint2014arXiv

Topological phase structure of entangled qudits

We discuss the appearance of fractional topological phases on cyclic evolutions of entangled qudits. The original result reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{106}, 240503 (2011) is detailed and extended to qudits of different dimensions. The topological nature of the phase evolution and its restriction to fractional values are related to both the structure of the projective space of states and entanglement. For maximally entangled states of qudits with the same Hilbert space dimension, the fractional geometric phases are the only ones attainable under local SU($d$) operations, an effect that can be experimentally observed through conditional interference.

Vacuum fluctuations in the presence of nonlinear boundary conditions

We consider a system consisting of a quantum, massless, real scalar field, in the presence of nonlinear mirrors: infinite parallel planes, upon which the field satisfies nonlinear boundary conditions. The latter are implemented by non-quadratic interaction vertices, strictly localized on the mirrors. By using the appropriate perturbative expansions, we obtain approximate expressions for the Casimir energy corresponding to weak coupling, regarding the strength of the interaction terms. We also comment on an alternative expansion scheme that may be useful when the weak coupling expansion is not justified.

A non Abelian effective model for ensembles of magnetic defects in QCD(3)

We construct a non Abelian model for SU(2) QCD in Euclidean three-dimensional spacetime and study its different phases. The model contains a center vortex sector coupled to a dual effective field encoding information about how the vortices are paired in the ensemble. The possible phases in parameter space are interpreted in terms of the proliferation of either closed center vortices or closed chains, where the endpoints of open vortices are attached in pairs to monopole-like defects.

Fractional topological phase on spatially encoded photonic qudits

We discuss the appearance of fractional topological phases on cyclic evolutions of entangled qudits encoded on photonic degrees of freedom. We show how the spatial correlations between photons generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion can be used to evidence the multiple topological phases acquired by entangled qudits and the role played by the Hilbert space dimension. A realistic experimental proposal is presented with numerical predictions of the expected results.

Confinement of quarks and valence gluons in SU(N) Yang-Mills-Higgs models

In this work, we analyze a class of Yang-Mills models containing adjoint Higgs fields, with SU(N) symmetry spontaneously broken down to Z(N), showing they contain center vortices, Y-junctions formed by them, and junctions where different center vortices are smoothly interpolated by monopole-like configurations. In the context of dual superconductors, these objects represent different states of the gluon field. Center vortices confine quarks to form normal hadron states. The interpolating monopole, which in our model cannot exist as an isolated configuration, is identified with a confined valence gluon. A junction containing a monopole can bind quarks in a color nonsinglet state to form an overall neutral object, identified with a hybrid hadron. These states, formed by quarks bound to a valence gluon, are allowed by QCD, and current experimental collaborations are aimed at identifying them. Finally, considering the general version of the model, based on a compact simple gauge group G, the picture is completed with a heuristic discussion about why it would be natural using as G the dual of the chromoelectric gauge group G_e, and external pointlike monopoles to represent the mesonic and baryonic Wilson loops.

Derivation of an Abelian effective model for instanton chains in 3D Yang-Mills theory

In this work, we derive a recently proposed Abelian model to describe the interaction of correlated monopoles, center vortices, and dual fields in three dimensional SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. Following recent polymer techniques, special care is taken to obtain the end-to-end probability for a single interacting center vortex, which constitutes a key ingredient to represent the ensemble integration.

Diagonal deformations of thin center vortices and their stability in Yang-Mills theories

The importance of center vortices for the understanding of the confining properties of SU(N) Yang-Mills theories is well established in the lattice. However, in the continuum, there is a problem concerning the relevance of center vortex backgrounds. They display the so called Savvidy-Nielsen-Olesen instability, associated with a gyromagnetic ratio $g^{(b)}_m=2$ for the off-diagonal gluons. In this work, we initially consider the usual definition of a {\it thin} center vortex and rewrite it in terms of a local color frame in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories. Then, we define a thick center vortex as a diagonal deformation of the thin object. Besides the usual thick background profile, this deformation also contains a frame defect coupled with gyromagnetic ratio $g^{(d)}_m=1$, originated from the charged sector. As a consequence, the analysis of stability is modified. In particular, we point out that the defect should stabilize a vortex configuration formed by a pair of straight components separated by an appropriate finite distance.

Fractional topological phase for entangled qudits

We investigate the topological structure of entangled qudits under unitary local operations. Different sectors are identified in the evolution, and their geometrical and topological aspects are analyzed. The geometric phase is explicitly calculated in terms of the concurrence. As a main result, we predict a fractional topological phase for cyclic evolutions in the multiply connected space of maximally entangled states.

Large Dual Transformations and the Petrov-Diakonov Representation of the Wilson Loop

In this work, based on the Petrov-Diakonov representation of the Wilson loop average W in the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory, together with the Cho-Fadeev-Niemi decomposition, we present a natural framework to discuss possible ideas underlying confinement and ensembles of defects in the continuum. In this language we show how for different ensembles the surface appearing in the Wess-Zumino term in W can be either decoupled or turned into a variable, to be summed together with gauge fields, defects and dual fields. This is discussed in terms of the regularity properties imposed by the ensembles on the dual fields, thus precluding or enabling the possibility of performing the large dual transformations that would be necessary to decouple the initial surface.

Massless Fermions and the Instanton Dipole Liquid in Compact QED_3

We study the consequences of including parity preserving matter for the effective dual theory corresponding to compact QED_3; in particular we focus on the effect of that contribution on the confinement-deconfinement properties of the system. To that end, we compare two recent proposals when massless fermions are included, both based on an effective anomalous dual model, but having global and local Z_2 symmetries, respectively. We present a detailed analysis to show that while for large mass fermions the global Z_2 symmetry is preferred, in the massless fermion case the local Z_2 scenario turns out to be the proper one. We present a detailed discussion about how the inclusion of massless fermions in compact QED_3 leads to deconfinement, and discuss the stability of the deconfined phase by introducing a description based on an instanton dipole liquid picture.

String Breaking and Z(2) Local Symmetry in the 3D Georgi-Glashow model

In this work, we consider the London limit of the (2+1)D Georgi-Glashow model with dynamical quarks. Following Polyakov's monopole plasma approach and using dual methods to treat the relevant matter sector, we derive in a clear and straightforward manner the recently proposed gauging of the discrete Z(N) symmetry of the associated effective vortex theory. Our procedure applies to bosonic as well as to fermionic matter, enabling to derive a useful representation for the Wilson loop and discuss string breaking, due to the creation of dynamical quark-antiquark pairs. This phenomenon corresponds to a perimeter law, a behavior that has been already observed in the lattice.

Asymptotic States in Non-Local Field Theories

Asymptotic states in field theories containing non-local kinetic terms are analyzed using the canonical method, naturally defined in Minkowski space. We apply our results to study the asymptotic states of a non-local Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory coming from bosonization in 2+1 dimensions. We show that in this case the only asymptotic state of the theory, in the trivial (non-topological) sector, is the vacuum.

Canonical quantization of non-local field equations

We consistently quantize a class of relativistic non-local field equations characterized by a non-local kinetic term in the lagrangian. We solve the classical non-local equations of motion for a scalar field and evaluate the on-shell hamiltonian. The quantization is realized by imposing Heisenberg's equation which leads to the commutator algebra obeyed by the Fourier components of the field. We show that the field operator carries, in general, a reducible representation of the Poincare group. We also consider the Gupta-Bleuler quantization of a non-local gauge field and analyze the propagators and the physical states of the theory.

On the Chern-Simons Gauge Field

We show the relationship between a fluid of particles having charge and magnetic moment in $2+1$ dimensional electromagnetism and the Chern-Simons statistical field. The matter current which is minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field has two parts: the global electromagnetic current, and the corresponding topological current. The topological current is associated to the induced electromagnetic current, via a simple constitutive relation between charges and magnetic moments. We also study the edge states, when the region that the currents occupy is bounded.

Large Squeezing Behavior of Cosmological Entropy Generation

We consider the generation of entropy when particle pairs are created at a cosmological level. Making a reduction via the particle number basis, we compute the classical limit for the entropy generation due to the evolution of the matter field fluctuations (squeeze transformation), obtaining that it is linear in the squeeze parameter for a general class of initial states. We also discuss the dependence of the generated entropy on the coarse graining criteria.
