$A=2,3,4$ nuclear contact coefficients in the generalized contact formalism

We present a theoretical calculation for the $A = 2, 3$ and 4 nuclear contact coefficients within the generalized contact formalism, using both local and non-local chiral potentials. The Hyperspherical Harmonics method is employed to calculate the nuclear wave functions, from which we derive two-body momentum distributions and density functions to extract the contact coefficients. We have extracted the contact coefficients from two-body momentum distributions or from density functions, for a given nucleus and potential, and we have found that the generalized contact formalism predictions are verified in the triplet spin channel for local and non-local potentials. On the other hand, some significant tensions exist for the singlet channels, especially when studied with non-local potentials. We have also analyzed the model-independence of the ratios between the contact coefficients, and we have found to be quite satisfied. This study extends previous works based on local interaction models only.

Heisenberg's uncertainty principle in the PTOLEMY project: a theory update

We discuss the consequences of the quantum uncertainty on the spectrum of the electron emitted by the $β$-processes of a tritium atom bound to a graphene sheet. We analyze quantitatively the issue recently raised in [Cheipesh et al., Phys. Rev. D 104, 116004 (2021)], and discuss the relevant time scales and the degrees of freedom that can contribute to the intrinsic spread in the electron energy. We perform careful calculations of the potential between tritium and graphene with different coverages and geometries. With this at hand, we propose possible avenues to mitigate the effect of the quantum uncertainty.

Implementation and Optimization of the PTOLEMY Transverse Drift Electromagnetic Filter

The PTOLEMY transverse drift filter is a new concept to enable precision analysis of the energy spectrum of electrons near the tritium beta-decay endpoint. This paper details the implementation and optimization methods for successful operation of the filter. We present the first demonstrator that produces the required magnetic field properties with an iron return-flux magnet. Two methods for the setting of filter electrode voltages are detailed. The challenges of low-energy electron transport in cases of low field are discussed, such as the growth of the cyclotron radius with decreasing magnetic field, which puts a ceiling on filter performance relative to fixed filter dimensions. Additionally, low pitch angle trajectories are dominated by motion parallel to the magnetic field lines and introduce non-adiabatic conditions and curvature drift. To minimize these effects and maximize electron acceptance into the filter, we present a three-potential-well design to simultaneously drain the parallel and transverse kinetic energies throughout the length of the filter. These optimizations are shown, in simulation, to achieve low-energy electron transport from a 1 T iron core (or 3 T superconducting) starting field with initial kinetic energy of 18.6 keV drained to <10 eV (<1 eV) in about 80 cm. This result for low field operation paves the way for the first demonstrator of the PTOLEMY spectrometer for measurement of electrons near the tritium endpoint to be constructed at the Gran Sasso National Laboratary (LNGS) in Italy.

The X17 boson and the $^3$H$(p,e^+ e^-)^4$He and $^3$He$(n,e^+ e^-)^4$He processes: a theoretical analysis

The present work deals with $e^+$-$e^-$ pair production in the four-nucleon system. We first analyze the process as a purely electromagnetic one in the context of a state-of-the-art approach to nuclear strong-interaction dynamics and nuclear electromagnetic currents, derived from chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT). Next, we examine how the exchange of a hypothetical low-mass boson would impact the cross section for such a process. We consider several possibilities, that this boson is either a scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, or axial particle. The ab initio calculations use exact hyperspherical-harmonics methods to describe the bound state and low-energy spectrum of the $A\,$=$\,4$ continuum, and fully account for initial state interaction effects in the $3+1$ clusters. While electromagnetic interactions are treated to high orders in the chiral expansion, the interactions of the hypothetical boson with nucleons are modeled in leading-order $χ$EFT (albeit, in some instances, selected subleading contributions are also accounted for). We also provide an overview of possible future experiments probing pair production in the $A\,$=$\,4$ system at a number of candidate facilities.facilities.

Setup commissioning for an improved measurement of the D(p,gamma)3He cross section at Big Bang Nucleosynthesis energies

Among the reactions involved in the production and destruction of deuterium during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the deuterium-burning D(p,gamma)3He reaction has the largest uncertainty and limits the precision of theoretical estimates of primordial deuterium abundance. Here we report the results of a careful commissioning of the experimental setup used to measure the cross-section of the D(p,gamma)3He reaction at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics of the Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy). The commissioning was aimed at minimising all sources of systematic uncertainty in the measured cross sections. The overall systematic error achieved (< 3 %) will enable improved predictions of BBN deuterium abundance.

Study of $n+{}^3$H, $p+{}^3$He, $p+{}^3$H, and $n+{}^3$He scattering with the HH method

The $n+{}^3$H, $p+{}^3$He, $p+{}^3$H, and $n+{}^3$He elastic and charge exchange reactions at low energies are studied by means of the hyperspherical harmonic method. The considered nuclear Hamiltonians include modern two- and three-nucleon interactions, in particular results are reported in case of chiral two-nucleon potentials, with and without the inclusion of chiral three-nucleon (3N) interactions. A detailed study of the convergence and numerical stability of the method is presented. We have found that the effect the 3N force is in general tiny except for $p+{}^3$H scattering below the opening of the $n+{}^3$He channel. In such a case, the effect of 3N forces is appreciable and a clear dependence on the cutoff used to regularize the high-momentum tail of the interactions is observed. Such a dependence is related to the presence of the poorly known sharp $0^+$ resonance, considered to be the first excited state of ${}^4$He.

Unitary ambiguity of NN contact interactions and the 3N force

We identify a redundancy between two- and three-nucleon contact interactions at the fourth and fifth order of the chiral expansion respectively. In particular we show that tensor-type and spin-orbit three-nucleon contact interactions effectively account for that part of the two-nucleon interaction which depends on the total center-of-mass momentum and is unconstrained by relativity. This might give the chiral effective field theory enough flexibility to successfully address $A=3$ scattering observables already at N3LO.

From response functions to cross sections in neutrino scattering off the deuteron and trinucleons

Response functions, differential cross sections and total cross sections for several (anti)neutrino induced reactions on 2H, 3He and 3H are calculated in momentum space for (anti)neutrino energies up to 160 MeV, using the AV18 nucleon-nucleon potential and a single-nucleon weak current operator. This work is a continuation of our investigations presented in J. Golak et al. [Phys. Rev. C 98, 015501 (2018)].

Chiral nucleon-nucleon forces in nuclear structure calculations

Realistic nuclear potentials, derived within chiral perturbation theory, are a major breakthrough in modern nuclear structure theory, since they provide a direct link between nuclear physics and its underlying theory, namely the QCD. As a matter of fact, chiral potentials are tailored on the low-energy regime of nuclear structure physics, and chiral perturbation theory provides on the same footing two-nucleon forces as well as many-body ones. This feature fits well with modern advances in ab-initio methods and realistic shell-model. Here, we will review recent nuclear structure calculations, based on realistic chiral potentials, for both finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter.

Muon capture on 3H

The muon capture on 3H leading to muonic neutrino and three neutrons in the final state is studied under full inclusion of final state interactions. Predictions for the three-body break-up of 3H are calculated with the AV18 potential, augmented by the Urbana IX three-nucleon force. Our results are based on the single nucleon weak current operator comprising the dominant relativistic corrections. This work is a natural extension of our investigations of the muon capture on 3He leading to 3H or n+d or n+n+p and muonic neutrino in the final state, presented in Phys. Rev. C90, 024001 (2014).

Astrophysical implications of the proton-proton cross section updates

The p(p,e^+ ν_e)^2H reaction rate is an essential ingredient for theoretical computations of stellar models. In the past several values of the corresponding S-factor have been made available by different authors. Prompted by a recent evaluation of S(E), we analysed the effect of the adoption of different proton-proton reaction rates on stellar models, focusing, in particular, on the age of mid and old stellar clusters (1-12 Gyr) and on standard solar model predictions. By comparing different widely adopted p(p,e^+ ν_e)^2H reaction rates, we found a maximum difference in the temperature regimes typical of main sequence hydrogen-burning stars (5x10^6 - 3x10^7 K) of about 3%. Such a variation translates into a change of cluster age determination lower than 1%. A slightly larger effect is observed in the predicted solar neutrino fluxes with a maximum difference, in the worst case, of about 8%. Finally we also notice that the uncertainty evaluation of the present proton-proton rate is at the level of few \permil, thus the p(p,e^+ ν_e)^2H reaction rate does not constitute anymore a significant uncertainty source in stellar models.

Electromagnetic Structure of Few-Nucleon Ground States

Experimental form factors of the hydrogen and helium isotopes, extracted from an up-to-date global analysis of cross sections and polarization observables measured in elastic electron scattering from these systems, are compared to predictions obtained in three different theoretical approaches: the first is based on realistic interactions and currents, including relativistic corrections (labeled as the conventional approach); the second relies on a chiral effective field theory description of the strong and electromagnetic interactions in nuclei (labeled $χ$EFT); the third utilizes a fully relativistic treatment of nuclear dynamics as implemented in the covariant spectator theory (labeled CST). For momentum transfers below $Q \lesssim 5$ fm$^{-1}$ there is satisfactory agreement between experimental data and theoretical results in all three approaches. However, at $Q \gtrsim 5$ fm$^{-1}$, particularly in the case of the deuteron, a relativistic treatment of the dynamics, as is done in the CST, is necessary. The experimental data on the deuteron $A$ structure function extend to $Q \simeq 12$ fm$^{-1}$, and the close agreement between these data and the CST results suggests that, even in this extreme kinematical regime, there is no evidence for new effects coming from quark and gluon degrees of freedom at short distances.

Implication of the proton-deuteron radiative capture for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

The astrophysical $S$-factor for the radiative capture $d(p,γ)^3$He in the energy-range of interest for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) is calculated using an {\it ab-initio} approach. The nuclear Hamiltonian retains both two- and three-nucleon interactions - the Argonne $v_{18}$ and the Urbana IX, respectively. Both one- and many-body contributions to the nuclear current operator are included. The former retain for the first time, besides the $1/m$ leading order contribution ($m$ is the nucleon mass), also the next-to-leading order term, proportional to $1/m^3$. The many-body currents are constructed in order to satisfy the current conservation relation with the adopted Hamiltonian model. The hyperspherical harmonics technique is applied to solve the $A=3$ bound and scattering states. A particular attention is used in this second case in order to obtain, in the energy range of BBN, an uncertainty on the astrophysical $S$-factor of the order or below $\sim$1 %. Then, in this energy range, the $S$-factor is found to be $\sim$10 % larger than the currently adopted values.Part of this increase (1-3 %) is due to the $1/m^3$ one-body operator, while the remaining is due to the new more accurate scattering wave functions. We have studied the implication of this new determination for the $d(p,γ)^3$He $S$-factor on deuterium primordial abundance. We find that the predicted theoretical value for $^2$H/H is in excellent agreement with its experimental determination, using the most recent determination of baryon density of Planck experiment, and with a standard number of relativistic degrees of freedom $N_{\rm eff}=3.046$ during primordial nucleosynthesis.

Towards order-by-order calculations of the nuclear and neutron matter equations of state in chiral effective field theory

We calculate the nuclear and neutron matter equations of state from microscopic nuclear forces at different orders in chiral effective field theory and with varying momentum-space cutoff scales. We focus attention on how the order-by-order convergence depends on the choice of resolution scale and the implications for theoretical uncertainty estimates on the isospin asymmetry energy. Specifically we study the equations of state using consistent NLO and N2LO (next-to-next-to-leading order) chiral potentials where the low-energy constants cD and cE associated with contact vertices in the N2LO chiral three-nucleon force are fitted to reproduce the binding energies of 3H and 3He as well as the beta-decay lifetime of 3H. At these low orders in the chiral expansion there is little sign of convergence, while an exploratory study employing the N3LO two-nucleon force together with the N2LO three-nucleon force give first indications for (slow) convergence with low-cutoff potentials and poor convergence with higher-cutoff potentials. The consistent NLO and N2LO potentials described in the present work provide the basis for estimating theoretical uncertainties associated with the order-by-order convergence of nuclear many-body calculations in chiral effective field theory.

A chiral effective field theory study of hadronic parity violation in few-nucleon systems

We reconsider the derivation of the nucleon-nucleon parity-violating (PV) potential within a chiral effective field theory framework. We construct the potential up to next-to-next-to-leading order by including one-pion-exchange, two-pion-exchange, contact, and 1/M (M being the nucleon mass) terms, and use dimensional regularization to renormalize the pion-loop corrections. A detailed analysis of the number of independent low-energy constants (LEC's) entering the potential is carried out. We find that it depends on six LEC's: the pion-nucleon PV coupling constant $h^1_π$ and five parameters multiplying contact interactions. We investigate PV effects induced by this potential on several few-nucleon observables, including the $\vec{p}$-$p$ longitudinal asymmetry, the neutron spin rotation in $\vec{n}$-$p$ and $\vec{n}$-$d$ scattering, and the longitudinal asymmetry in the $^3$He$(\vec{n},p)^3$H charge-exchange reaction. An estimate for the range of values of the various LEC's is provided by using available experimental data.

Break-up channels in muon capture on 3He

The mu + 2H -> nu + n + n, mu + 3He -> nu + 3H, mu + 3He -> nu + n + d and mu + 3He -> nu + n + n + p capture reactions are studied with various realistic potentials under full inclusion of final state interactions. Our results for the two- and three-body break-up of 3He are calculated with a variety of nucleon-nucleon potentials, among which is the AV18 potential, augmented by the Urbana~IX three-nucleon potential. Most of our results are based on the single nucleon weak current operator. As a first step, we have tested our calculation in the case of the mu + 2H -> nu + n + n and mu + 3He -> nu + 3H reactions, for which theoretical predictions obtained in a comparable framework are available. Additionally, we have been able to obtain for the first time a realistic estimate for the total rates of the muon capture reactions on 3He in the break-up channels: 544 1/s and 154 1/s for the n + d and n + n + p channels, respectively. Our results have also been compared with the most recent experimental data, finding a rough agreement for the total capture rates, but failing to reproduce the differential capture rates.

Measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the quasi-elastic $^3\vec{\mathrm{He}}(\vec{\mathrm{e}},\mathrm{e}'\mathrm{d})$ process

We present a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the $^3\vec{\mathrm{He}}(\vec{\mathrm{e}},\mathrm{e}'\mathrm{d})$ reaction. This particular process is a uniquely sensitive probe of hadron dynamics in $^3\mathrm{He}$ and the structure of the underlying electromagnetic currents. The measurements have been performed in and around quasi-elastic kinematics at $Q^2 = 0.25\,(\mathrm{GeV}/c)^2$ for missing momenta up to $270\,\mathrm{MeV}/c$. The asymmetries are in fair agreement with the state-of-the-art calculations in terms of their functional dependencies on $p_\mathrm{m}$ and $ω$, but are systematically offset. Beyond the region of the quasi-elastic peak, the discrepancies become even more pronounced. Thus, our measurements have been able to reveal deficiencies in the most sophisticated calculations of the three-body nuclear system, and indicate that further refinement in the treatment of their two- and/or three-body dynamics is required.

Muon capture on deuteron and the neutron-neutron scattering length

We study the capture rate in the doublet hyperfine initial state for the muon capture reaction $μ^- + \,^2{\rm H} \rightarrow ν_μ+ n + n$ ($Γ^D$) and the total capture rate for the reaction $ μ^- + \,^3{\rm He} \rightarrow ν_μ+ \,^3{\rm H}$ ($Γ_0$). We investigate whether $Γ^D$ and $Γ_0$ could be sensitive to the $nn$ $S$-wave scattering length ($a_{nn}$). To this aim, we consider nuclear potentials and weak currents derived within $χ$EFT. We employ the N3LO chiral potential with cutoff $Λ$=500 MeV, but the low-energy constant (LEC) determining $a_{nn}$ is varied so as to obtain $a_{nn}$=-18.95 (the present empirical value), -16.0, -22.0, and +18.22 fm. The last value leads to a $nn$ bound state with a binding energy of 139 keV. The LECs $c_D$ and $c_E$, present in the three-nucleon potential and axial-vector current, are fitted to reproduce the $A=3$ binding energies and the triton Gamow-Teller matrix element. The capture rate $Γ^D$ is found to be 399(3) s$^{-1}$ for $a_{nn}$=-18.95 and -16.0 fm; and 400(3) s$^{-1}$ for $a_{nn}$=-22.0 fm. For $a_{nn}$=+18.22 fm, we obtain 275(3) s$^{-1}$ (135(3) s$^{-1}$), when the final $nn$ system is unbound (bound). The rate $Γ_0$ is found to be 1494(15), 1491(16), 1488(18), and 1475(16) s$^{-1}$ for $a_{nn}$=-18.95, -16.0, -22.0, and +18.22 fm, respectively. The theoretical uncertainties are due to the fitting procedure and radiative corrections. Our results seem to exclude the possibility of constraining a negative $a_{nn}$ with an uncertainty of less than $\sim \pm$ 3 fm through an accurate determination of the muon capture rates, but the uncertainty on the present empirical value will not complicate the interpretation of the (forth-coming) experimental results for $Γ^D$. Finally, a comparison with the already available experimental data discourages the possibility of a bound $nn$ state.

Study of nucleonic matter with a consistent two- and three-body perturbative chiral interaction

We calculate perturbatively the energy per nucleon in infinite nuclear matter with a chiral N3LO (next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order) two-body potential plus a N2LO three-body force (3BF). The 3BF low-energy constants which cannot be constrained by two-body observables are chosen such as to reproduce the A=3 binding energies and the triton Gamow-Teller matrix element. This enables to study the nuclear matter equation of state in a parameter-free approach.

The nuclear matter equation of state with consistent two- and three-body perturbative chiral interactions

We compute the energy per particle of infinite symmetric nuclear matter from chiral N3LO (next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order) two-body potentials plus N2LO three-body forces. The low-energy constants of the chiral three-nucleon force that cannot be constrained by two-body observables are fitted to reproduce the triton binding energy and the 3H-3He Gamow-Teller transition matrix element. In this way, the saturation properties of nuclear matter are reproduced in a parameter-free approach. The equation of state is computed up to third order in many-body perturbation theory, with special emphasis on the role of the third-order particle-hole diagram. The dependence of these results on the cutoff scale and regulator function is studied. We find that the inclusion of three-nucleon forces consistent with the applied two-nucleon interaction leads to a reduced dependence on the choice of the regulator only for lower values of the cutoff.

Effect of three-nucleon interaction in p-3He elastic scattering

We present a detailed study of the effect of different three-nucleon interaction models in p-3He elastic scattering at low energies. In particular, two models have been considered: one derived from effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order and one derived from a more phenomenological point of view -- the so-called Illinois model. The four-nucleon scattering observables are calculated using the Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonics technique and the results are compared with available experimental data. We have found that the inclusion of either one of the other force model improves the agreement with the experimental data, in particular for the proton vector analyzing power.

The results are in qualitative agreement with realistic meson-nucleon theoretical calculations. The data have uncovered a second diffraction minimum, which was predicted in the $Q^2$ range of this experiment, and rule out conclusively long-standing predictions of dimensional scaling of high-energy amplitudes using quark counting.

The proton-proton weak capture in chiral effective field theory

The astrophysical S-factor for proton-proton weak capture is calculated in chiral effective field theory over the center-of-mass relative-energy range 0--100 keV. The chiral two-nucleon potential derived up to next-to-next-to-next-to leading order is augmented by the full electromagnetic interaction including, beyond Coulomb, two-photon and vacuum-polarization corrections. The low-energy constants (LEC's) entering the weak current operators are fixed so as to reproduce the A=3 binding energies and magnetic moments, and the Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium beta decay. Contributions from S and P partial waves in the incoming two-proton channel are retained. The S-factor at zero energy is found to be S(0)=(4.030 +/- 0.006) x 10^{-23} MeV fm^2, with a P-wave contribution of 0.020 x 10^{-23} MeV fm^2. The theoretical uncertainty is due to the fitting procedure of the LEC's and to the cutoff dependence.

The four nucleon scattering observables are calculated using the Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonic technique and the results are compared with available experimental data. We have found that with the inclusion of both 3N force models the agreement with the experimental data is improved, in particular for the proton vector analyzing power A_y.

Inclusive neutrino scattering off deuteron from threshold to GeV energies

Background: Neutrino-nucleus quasi-elastic scattering is crucial to interpret the neutrino oscillation results in long baseline neutrino experiments. There are rather large uncertainties in the cross section, due to insufficient knowledge on the role of two-body weak currents. Purpose: Determine the role of two-body weak currents in neutrino-deuteron quasi-elastic scattering up to GeV energies. Methods: Calculate cross sections for inclusive neutrino scattering off deuteron induced by neutral and charge-changing weak currents, from threshold up to GeV energies, using the Argonne $v_{18}$ potential and consistent nuclear electroweak currents with one- and two-body terms. Results: Two-body contributions are found to be small, and increase the cross sections obtained with one-body currents by less than 10% over the whole range of energies. Total cross sections obtained by describing the final two-nucleon states with plane waves differ negligibly, for neutrino energies $\gtrsim 500$ MeV, from those in which interaction effects in these states are fully accounted for. The sensitivity of the calculated cross sections to different models for the two-nucleon potential and/or two-body terms in the weak current is found to be weak. Comparing cross sections to those obtained in a naive model in which the deuteron is taken to consist of a free proton and neutron at rest, nuclear structure effects are illustrated to be non-negligible. Conclusion: Contributions of two-body currents in neutrino-deuteron quasi-elastic scattering up to GeV are found to be smaller than 10%. Finally, it should be stressed that the results reported in this work do not include pion production channels.

Benchmark calculation of n-3H and p-3He scattering

The n-3H and p-3He elastic phase-shifts below the trinucleon disintegration thresholds are calculated by solving the 4-nucleon problem with three different realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions (the I-N3LO model by Entem and Machleidt, the Argonne v18 potential model, and a low-k model derived from the CD-Bonn potential). Three different methods -- Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas, Hyperspherical Harmonics, and Faddeev-Yakubovsky -- have been used and their respective results are compared. For both n-3H and p-3He we observe a rather good agreement between the three different theoretical methods. We also compare the theoretical predictions with the available experimental data, confirming the large underprediction of the p-3He analyzing power.

Chiral effective field theory predictions for muon capture on deuteron and 3He

The muon-capture reactions 2H(μ^-,ν_μ)nn and 3He(μ^-,ν_μ)3H are studied with nuclear strong-interaction potentials and charge-changing weak currents, derived in chiral effective field theory. The low-energy constants (LEC's) c_D and c_E, present in the three-nucleon potential and (c_D) axial-vector current, are constrained to reproduce the A=3 binding energies and the triton Gamow-Teller matrix element. The vector weak current is related to the isovector component of the electromagnetic current via the conserved-vector-current constraint, and the two LEC's entering the contact terms in the latter are constrained to reproduce the A=3 magnetic moments. The muon capture rates on deuteron and 3He are predicted to be 399(3) sec^{-1} and 1494 (21) sec^{-1}, respectively, where the spread accounts for the cutoff sensitivity as well as uncertainties in the LEC's and electroweak radiative corrections. By comparing the calculated and precisely measured rates on 3He, a value for the induced pseudoscalar form factor is obtained in good agreement with the chiral perturbation theory prediction.

Theoretical description of three- and four-nucleon scattering states using bound-state-like wave functions

Bound-state-like wave functions are used to determine the scattering matrix corresponding to low energy $N-d$ and $p-^3$He collisions. To this end, the coupled channel form of the integral relations derived from the Kohn variational principle is used. The construction of degenerate bound-state-like wave functions belonging to the continuum spectrum of the Hamiltonian is discussed. Examples are shown using realistic nucleon-nucleon forces.

Comparative study of three-nucleon force models in $A=3,4$ systems

Using modern nucleon-nucleon interactions in the description of the $A=3,4$ nuclei, it is not possible to reproduce both the three- and four-nucleon binding energies simultaneously. This is one manifestation of the necessity of including a three-nucleon force in the nuclear Hamiltonian. In this paper we will perform a comparative study of some, widely used, three-nucleon force models. We will analyze their capability to describe the aforementioned binding energies as well as the $n-d$ doublet scattering length. A correct description of these quantities can be considered a stringent requirement for a nuclear Hamiltonian containing two- and three-nucleon interaction terms. As we will show, this requirement is not fulfilled by several of the models available in the literature. To satisfy it, we propose modifications in the parametrization of the three-nucleon forces and we study their effects on few selected $N-d$ low energy scattering observables.

Muon capture on deuteron and 3He

The muon capture reactions 2H(μ^-,ν_μ)nn and 3He(μ^-,ν_μ)3H are studied with conventional or chiral realistic potentials and consistent weak currents. The initial and final A=2 and 3 nuclear wave functions are obtained from the Argonne v18 or chiral N3LO two-nucleon potential, in combination with, respectively, the Urbana IX or chiral N2LO three-nucleon potential in the case of A=3. The weak current consists of polar- and axial-vector components. The former are related to the isovector piece of the electromagnetic current via the conserved-vector-current hypothesis. These and the axial currents are derived either in a meson-exchange or in a chiral effective field theory (chiEFT) framework. There is one parameter (either the N-to-Δaxial coupling constant in the meson-exchange model, or the strength of a contact term in the chiEFT model) which is fixed by reproducing the Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium beta-decay. The model dependence relative to the adopted interactions and currents (and cutoff sensitivity in the chiEFT currents) is weak, resulting in total rates of 392.0 +/- 2.3 Hz for A=2, and 1484 +/- 13 Hz for A=3, where the spread accounts for this model dependence.

Muon capture on light nuclei

This work investigates the muon capture reactions 2H(μ^-,ν_μ)nn and 3He(μ^-,ν_μ)3H and the contribution to their total capture rates arising from the axial two-body currents obtained imposing the partially-conserved-axial-current (PCAC) hypothesis. The initial and final A=2 and 3 nuclear wave functions are obtained from the Argonne v_{18} two-nucleon potential, in combination with the Urbana IX three-nucleon potential in the case of A=3. The weak current consists of vector and axial components derived in chiral effective field theory. The low-energy constant entering the vector (axial) component is determined by reproducting the isovector combination of the trinucleon magnetic moment (Gamow-Teller matrix element of tritium beta-decay). The total capture rates are 393.1(8) s^{-1} for A=2 and 1488(9) s^{-1} for A=3, where the uncertainties arise from the adopted fitting procedure.

Proton-3He elastic scattering at low energies and the "A_y Puzzle"

The Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonic technique are applied to study p-3He elastic scattering at low energies. Preliminary results obtained using several interaction models are reported. We summarize and critically evaluate the available data on nuclear fusion cross sections important to energy generation in the Sun and other hydrogen-burning stars and to solar neutrino production. Recommended values and uncertainties are provided for key cross sections, and a recommended spectrum is given for 8B solar neutrinos. We also discuss opportunities for further increasing the precision of key rates, including new facilities, new experimental techniques, and improvements in theory. This review, which summarizes the conclusions of a workshop held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory, Seattle, in January 2009, is intended as a 10-year update and supplement to Reviews of Modern Physics 70 (1998) 1265.

The parity-violating asymmetry in the 3He(n,p)3H reaction

The longitudinal asymmetry induced by parity-violating (PV) components in the nucleon-nucleon potential is studied in the charge-exchange reaction 3He(n,p)3H at vanishing incident neutron energies. An expression for the PV observable is derived in terms of T-matrix elements for transitions from the {2S+1}L_J=1S_0 and 3S_1 states in the incoming n-3He channel to states with J=0 and 1 in the outgoing p-3H channel. The T-matrix elements involving PV transitions are obtained in first-order perturbation theory in the hadronic weak-interaction potential, while those connecting states of the same parity are derived from solutions of the strong-interaction Hamiltonian with the hyperspherical-harmonics method. The coupled-channel nature of the scattering problem is fully accounted for. Results are obtained corresponding to realistic or chiral two- and three-nucleon strong-interaction potentials in combination with either the DDH or pionless EFT model for the weak-interaction potential. The asymmetries, predicted with PV pion and vector-meson coupling constants corresponding (essentially) to the DDH "best values" set, range from -9.44 to -2.48 in units of 10^{-8}, depending on the input strong-interaction Hamiltonian. This large model dependence is a consequence of cancellations between long-range (pion) and short-range (vector-meson) contributions, and is of course sensitive to the assumed values for the PV coupling constants.

Thermal neutron captures on $d$ and $^3$He

We report on a study of the $nd$ and $n\,^3$He radiative captures at thermal neutron energies, using wave functions obtained from either chiral or conventional two- and three-nucleon realistic potentials with the hyperspherical harmonics method, and electromagnetic currents derived in chiral effective field theory up to one loop. The predicted $nd$ and $n\,^3$He cross sections are in good agreement with data, but exhibit a significant dependence on the input Hamiltonian. A comparison is also made between these and new results for the $nd$ and $n\,^3$He cross sections obtained in the conventional framework for both potentials and currents.

Neutron spin rotation in \vec{n}-d scattering

The neutron spin rotation induced by parity-violating (PV) components in the nucleon-nucleon potential is studied in \vec{n}-d scattering at zero energy. Results are obtained corresponding to the Argonne v_{18} two-nucleon and Urbana-IX three-nucleon strong-interaction potentials in combination with either the DDH or pionless EFT model for the weak-interaction potential. We find that this observable is dominated by the contribution of the long-range part of the PV potential associated with pion exchange. Thus its measurement could provide a further constraint, complementary to that coming from measurements of the photon asymmetry in \vec{n}-p radiative capture, on the strength of this component of the hadronic weak interaction.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of magnetic moments and M1 transitions in A<=7 nuclei including meson-exchange currents

Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of magnetic moments and M1 transitions including two-body meson-exchange current (MEC) contributions are reported for A<=7 nuclei. The realistic Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Illinois-2 three-nucleon potentials are used to generate the nuclear wave functions. The two-body meson-exchange operators are constructed to satisfy the continuity equation with the Argonne v18 potential. The MEC contributions increase the A=3,7 isovector magnetic moments by 16% and the A=6,7 M1 transition rates by 17--34%, bringing them into very good agreement with the experimental data.

Electromagnetic structure of A=2 and 3 nuclei and the nuclear current operator

Different models for conserved two- and three-body electromagnetic currents are constructed from two- and three-nucleon interactions, using either meson-exchange mechanisms or minimal substitution in the momentum dependence of these interactions. The connection between these two different schemes is elucidated. A number of low-energy electronuclear observables, including (i) $np$ radiative capture at thermal neutron energies and deuteron photodisintegration at low energies, (ii) $nd$ and $pd$ radiative capture reactions, and (iii) isoscalar and isovector magnetic form factors of $^3$H and $^3$He, are calculated in order to make a comparative study of these models for the current operator. The realistic Argonne $v_{18}$ two-nucleon and Urbana IX or Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon interactions are taken as a case study. For $A$=3 processes, the bound and continuum wave functions, both below and above deuteron breakup threshold, are obtained with the correlated hyperspherical-harmonics method. Three-body currents give small but significant contributions to some of the polarization observables in the $^2$H($p,γ$)$^3$He process and the $^2$H($n,γ$)$^3$H cross section at thermal neutron energies. It is shown that the use of a current which did not exactly satisfy current conservation with the two- and three-nucleon interactions in the Hamiltonian was responsible for some of the discrepancies reported in previous studies between the experimental and theoretical polarization observables in $pd$ radiative capture.

Two-Body Electrodisintegration of $^3$He at High Momentum Transfer

The $^3$He$(e,e^\prime p)$$d$ reaction is studied using an accurate three-nucleon bound state wave function, a model for the electromagnetic current operator including one- and two-body terms, and the Glauber approximation for the treatment of final state interactions. In contrast to earlier studies, the profile operator in the Glauber expansion is derived from a nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude, which retains its full spin and isospin dependence and is consistent with phase-shift analyses of two-nucleon scattering data. The amplitude is boosted from the center-of-mass frame, where parameterizations for it are available, to the frame where rescattering occurs. Exact Monte Carlo methods are used to evaluate the relevant matrix elements of the electromagnetic current operator. The predicted cross section is found to be in quantitative agreement with the experimental data for values of the missing momentum $p_{\rm m}$ in the range (0--700) MeV/c, but underestimates the data at $p_{\rm m} \simeq 1$ GeV/c by about a factor of two. However, the longitudinal-transverse asymmetry, measured up to $p_{\rm m} \simeq$ 600 MeV/c, is well reproduced by theory. A critical comparison is carried out between the results obtained in the present work and those of earlier studies.

Variational Calculation on A=3 and 4 Nuclei with Non-Local Potentials

The application of the hyperspherical harmonic approach to the case of non-local two-body potentials is described. Given the properties of the hyperspherical harmonic functions, there are no difficulties in considering the approach in both coordinate and momentum space. The binding energies and other ground state properties of A=3 and 4 nuclei are calculated using the CD Bonn 2000 and N3LO two-body potentials. The results are shown to be in excellent agreement with corresponding ones obtained by other accurate techniques.

Electrodisintegration of $^3$He below and above deuteron breakup threshold

Recent advances in the study of electrodisintegration of 3He are presented and discussed. The pair-correlated hyperspherical harmonics method is used to calculate the initial and final state wave functions, with a realistic Hamiltonian consisting of the Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. The model for the nuclear current and charge operators retains one- and many-body contributions. Particular attention is made in the construction of the two-body current operators arising from the momentum-dependent part of the two-nucleon interaction. Three-body current operators are also included so that the full current operator is strictly conserved. The present model for the nuclear current operator is tested comparing theoretical predictions and experimental data of pd radiative capture cross section and spin observables.

Polarization transfer in $^4$He$(\vec{e},e^\prime\vec{p})$$^3$H: is the ratio $G_{Ep}/G_{Mp}$ modified in medium ?

Polarization observables in the $^4$He$(\vec{e},e^\prime\vec{p})$$^3$H reaction are calculated using accurate three- and four-nucleon bound-state wave functions, a realistic model for the nuclear electromagnetic current operator, and a treatment of final-state-interactions with an optical potential. In contrast to earlier studies, no significant discrepancies are found between theory and experiment both for the ratio of transverse to longitudinal polarization transfers and for the induced polarization, when free-nucleon electromagnetic form factors are used in the current operator. The present results challenge the current interpretation of the experimental data in terms of medium-modified form factors.

Recent Developments in Few-Nucleon Systems

N-d elastic scattering is studied at different energies using one of the modern NN interactions, the Argonne v_{18} which explicitly includes the magnetic moment interaction between two nucleons. This interaction, which has been often neglected in the description of the few-nucleon continuum, produces sizable modifications in some elastic observables. Its effects, as well as those produced by the Coulomb potential, are analyzed as a function of energy. The magnetic moment interaction produces appreciable effects in $p-d$ scattering at low energies butthey are very small above 10 MeV. Above 65 MeV Coulomb effects can be observed only in specific observables as for example $T_{21}$.

Parameter-free effective field theory calculation for the solar proton-fusion and hep processes

Spurred by the recent complete determination of the weak currents in two-nucleon systems up to ${\cal O}(Q^3)$ in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, we carry out a parameter-free calculation of the threshold $S$-factors for the solar $pp$ (proton-fusion) and $hep$ processes in an effective field theory that {\it combines} the merits of the standard nuclear physics method and systematic chiral expansion. The power of the EFT adopted here is that one can correlate in a unified formalism the weak-current matrix elements of two-, three- and four-nucleon systems. Using the tritium $β$-decay rate as an input to fix the only unknown parameter in the theory, we can evaluate the threshold $S$ factors with drastically improved precision; the results are $S_{pp}(0) = 3.94\times(1 \pm 0.004) \times 10^{-25} {MeV-b}$ and $S_{hep}(0) = (8.6\pm 1.3)\times 10^{-20} {keV-b}$. The dependence of the calculated $S$-factors on the momentum cutoff parameter $Λ$ has been examined for a physically reasonable range of $Λ$. This dependence is found to be extremely small for the $pp$ process, and to be within acceptable levels for the $hep$ process, substantiating the consistency of our calculational scheme.

Theoretical Study of the ^3He(mu^-,nu_mu)^3H Capture

The ^3He(mu^-,nu_mu)^3H weak capture is studied using correlated-hyperspherical-harmonics wave functions, obtained from realistic Hamiltonians consisting of the Argonne $v_{14}$ or Argonne $v_{18}$ two-nucleon, and Tucson-Melbourne or Urbana-IX three-nucleon interactions. The nuclear weak charge and current operators have vector and axial-vector components that include one- and two-body contributions. The strength of the leading two-body operator in the axial-vector current is adjusted to reproduce the Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium $β$-decay. The calculated total capture rate is in excellent agreement with the most recent experimental determination $1496\pm 4$ sec$^{-1}$, when the PCAC value is adopted for the induced pseudo-scalar coupling constant $g_{PS}$. The predictions for the capture rate and angular correlation parameters $A_v$, $A_t$, and $A_Δ$ are found to be only very weakly dependent on the model input Hamiltonian. The variation of these observables with $g_{PS}$ and the theoretical uncertainties deriving from the model-dependent procedure used to constrain the axial current are investigated.

Photo- and Electro-Disintegration of 3He at Threshold and pd Radiative Capture

The present work reports results for: pd radiative capture observables measured at center-of-mass (c.m.) energies in the range 0--100 keV and at 2 MeV by the TUNL and Wisconsin groups, respectively; contributions to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integral in 3He from the two- up to the three-body breakup thresholds, compared to experimental determinations by the TUNL group in this threshold region; longitudinal, transverse, and interference response functions measured in inclusive polarized electron scattering off polarized 3He at excitation energies below the threshold for breakup into ppn, compared to unpolarized longitudinal and transverse data from the Saskatoon group. The calculations are based on a realistic Hamiltonian with two- and three-nucleon interactions and a realistic current operator, including one- and two-body components. The theoretical predictions obtained by including only one-body currents are in violent disagreement with data. These differences between theory and experiment are, to a large extent, removed when two-body currents are taken into account, although some rather large discrepancies remain in the c.m. energy range 0--100 keV, particularly for the pd differential cross section and tensor analyzing power at small angles, and contributions to the GDH integral. A rather detailed analysis indicates that these discrepancies have, in large part, a common origin, and can be traced back to an excess strength obtained in the theoretical calculation of the E1 reduced matrix element associated with the pd channel having L,S,J=1,1/2,3/2. It is suggested that this lack of E1 strength observed experimentally might have implications for the nuclear interaction at very low energies. Finally, the validity of the long-wavelength approximation for electric dipole transitions is discussed.

Electromagnetic Structure of the Trinucleons

The electromagnetic form factors of the trinucleons 3H and 3He are calculated with wave functions obtained with the Argonne AV18 two-nucleon and Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. Full account is taken of the two-body currents required by current conservation with the AV18 interaction as well as those associated with N-Delta transition currents and the currents of Delta resonance components in the wave functions. Explicit three-nucleon current operators associated with the two-pion exchange three-nucleon interaction arising from irreducible S-wave pion-nucleon scattering is constructed and shown to have very little effect on the calculated magnetic form factors. The calculated magnetic form factor of 3H, and charge form factors of both 3H and 3He are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. However, the position of the zero in the magnetic form factor of 3He is slightly underpredicted.
