Magnons in Sr$_2$CuO$_3$: possible evidence for Goldstone-Higgs interaction in a weakly ordered spin-1/2 chain antiferromagnet

The Goldstone theorem mandates that a spontaneous symmetry breaking entails the emergence of gap(mass)less excitations. In the case where a rotational invariance of a system of spin magnetic moments is broken by an antiferromagnetic order, these are well-known transverse spin waves. The interaction of such Goldstone magnons with the Higgs amplitude mode of the order parameter is usually discarded, even though glimpses of Higgs physics have recently been reported in a quantum magnet, a topological insulator, and ferroelectric and disordered superconductor systems. The Goldstone-Higgs interactions could be expected to grow in importance near a quantum critical point (QCP), where the symmetry-breaking order is weak, and its amplitude fluctuations are significant. Here we report an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of a nearly one-dimensional spin-1/2 chain system, Sr$_2$CuO$_3$, which presents exactly such a case. The ESR spectra at $T > T_N$, in the disordered Luttinger-spin-liquid phase with unconfined spinons reveal ideal Heisenberg-chain behavior with only very small, field-independent linewidth, $\sim 1/T$. In the ordered state, below $T_N$, we identify antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) modes, which are well described by pseudo-Goldstone magnons in the model of a collinear biaxial antiferromagnet with two gaps, $Δ_1 = 23.0$ GHz and $Δ_2 = 13.3$ GHz. Additionally, we observe a major resonant response of special nature, which we attribute to magnon interaction with the Higgs amplitude mode in a weakly ordered antiferromagnet. Its unusual field dependence indicates the presence of a quantum phase transition at $μ_0 H \simeq 9.4$ T.

Suppression of 3D-ordering by defects in the $S=1/2$ frustrated chain magnet LiCuVO$_4$

We report on a heat capacity study of high quality single crystal samples of \lcvo\ -- a frustrated spin $S=1/2$ chain system -- in magnetic field amounting to 3/4 of the saturation field. At low fields up to about 7~T, a linear temperature dependence of the specific heat, $C_p\propto T$, resulting from 1D magnetic correlations in the spin chains is followed upon cooling by a sharp lambda anomaly of the transition into a 3D helical phase with $C_p\propto T^3$ behavior at low temperature. The transition from a spin liquid into a spin-modulated (SM) phase at higher fields occurs via a hump-like anomaly which, as the temperature decreases further turns into a $C_p\propto T^2$ law distinctive for a quasi-2D system. We suggest an explanation for how nonmagnetic defects in the Cu$^{2+}$ chains can suppress 3D long-range ordering in the SM phase and leave it undisturbed in a helical phase.

ESR of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet with a triangular lattice CuCrO2

Using electron-spin-resonance (ESR) technique we investigate the magnetic structure of CuCrO2, quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet with weakly distorted triangular lattice. Resonance frequencies and the excitation conditions in CuCrO2 at low temperatures are well described in the frame of cycloidal spin structure, defined by two susceptibilities parallel and perpendicular to the spin plane and by a biaxial crystal-field anisotropy. In agreement with the calculations, the character of the eigenmodes changes drastically at the spin-flop transition. The splitting of the observed modes can be well attributed to the resonances from different domains. The domain structure in CuCrO2 can be controlled by annealing of the sample in magnetic field.

Magnetic structure of the frustrated S=1/2 chain magnet LiCu2O2 doped with nonmagnetic Zn

We present the results of magnetization, ESR and NMR measurements on single crystal samples of the frustrated S=1/2 chain cuprate LiCu2O2 doped with nonmagnetic Zn^2+. As shown by the x-ray techniques the crystals of Li(Cu{1-x}Zn{x})2O2 with x<0.12 are single-phase, whereas for higher Zn concentrations the samples were polyphase. ESR spectra for all monophase samples (0<= x<0.12) can be explained within the model of a planar spin structure with a uniaxial type anisotropy. The NMR spectra of the highly doped single crystal sample Li(Cu0.9Zn0.1)2O2 can be described in the frame of a planar spin glass like magnetic structure with short range spiral correlations in the crystal (ab)-planes with strongest exchange bonds. The value of magnetic moments of Cu^2+ ions in this structure is close to value obtained for undoped crystals: (0.8 +- 0.1) mu_B.

Magnetic phase diagram of the frustrated S=1/2 chain magnet LiCu_2O_2

We present the results of the magnetization and dielectric constant measurements on untwinned single crystal samples of the frustrated S=1/2 chain cuprate LiCu_2O_2. Novel magnetic phase transitions were observed. A spin flop transition of the spiral spin plane was observed for the field orientations H||a,b. The second magnetic transition was observed at H~15 T for all three principal field directions. This high field magnetic phase is discussed as a collinear spin-modulated phase which is expected for an S=1/2 nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic chain system.

Magnetic excitations in the XY-pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

The XY-pyrochlore antiferromagnet \ETO\ is studied by heat capacity measurements and electron spin resonance spectroscopy performed on single crystal samples. The magnetic phase diagrams are established for two directions of applied field, $H\parallel [100]$ and $H\parallel [111]$. In the magnetically ordered phase observed below $T_N=1.2$ K, the magnetic excitation spectrum consists of a Goldstone mode acquiring an isotropic gap in an applied field, and another mode with a gap softening in the vicinity of a field-induced phase transition. This second-order transition takes place at a critical field $H_c$ above which the magnetization process is accompanied by a canting of the magnetic moments off their local "easy-planes". The specific heat curves for $H\parallel [100]$ ($H\gg H_c$) are well described by a model presuming a single dispersionless excitation mode with the energy gap obtained from the spectroscopic measurements.

Spin wave resonances in antiferromagnets

Spin wave resonances with enormously large wave numbers corresponding to wave vectors 10^5-10^6 cm^{-1} are observed in thin plates of FeBO3. The study of spin wave resonances allows one to obtain information about the spin wave spectrum. The temperature dependence of a non-uniform exchange constant is determined for FeBO3. Considerable softening of the magnon spectrum resulting from the interaction of magnons, is observed at temperatures above 1/3 of the Neel temperature. The excitation level of spin wave resonances is found to depend significantly on the inhomogeneous elastic distortions artificially created in the sample. A theoretical model to describe the observed effects is proposed.

NMR study of the high-field magnetic phase of LiCuVO$_4$

We report on NMR studies of the quasi--1D antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ chain cuprate LiCuVO$_4$, focusing on the high--field spin--modulated phase observed recently in applied magnetic fields $H > H_{\rm c2}$ ($μ_0H_{\rm c2} \approx 7.5$ T). The NMR spectra of $^7$Li and $^{51}$V around the transition from the ordered to the paramagnetic state were measured. It is shown that the spin--modulated magnetic structure forms with ferromagnetic interactions between spins of neighboring chains within the {\bf ab}--plane at low temperatures 0.6 K $ < T < T_{\rm N}$. The best fit provides evidence that the mutual orientation between spins of neighboring {\bf ab}--planes is random. For elevated temperatures $T_{\rm N} < T \lesssim 15$ K, short--range magnetic order occurs at least on the characteristic time scale of the NMR experiment.

Co-existing chiral and collinear phases in a distorted triangular antiferromagnet

The entire magnetic phase diagram of the quasi two dimensional (2D) magnet on a distorted triangular lattice KFe(MoO4)2 is outlined by means of magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements. It is found that the spin network breaks down into two almost independent magnetic subsystems. One subsystem is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true 3D order or quasi-2D order. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical predictions found in literature

Magnetic excitations in dipolar pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$

The spin dynamics in the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet $\rm Gd_2Sn_2O_7$ is studied by means of the electron spin resonance. In the ordered phase ($T_N = 1$ K), we have detected three gapped resonance modes. Their values agree well with the developed spin-wave theory which takes into account the Heisenberg nearest-neighbor exchange, the single-ion anisotropy and the long-range dipolar interactions. The theory also predicts a fourth lowest-frequency gap, which lies beyond the experimental range of frequencies, but determines the exponential decrease of the specific heat at low temperature.

Spin-liquid dynamics of pyrochlore magnets Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7

The spin-liquid phase of two highly frustrated pyrochlore magnets Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7 is probed using electron spin resonance in the temperature range 1.3 - 30 K. The deviation of the absorption line from the paramagnetic position ν=γH observed in both compounds below the Curie-Weiss temperature Θ_CW ~ 10 K, suggests an opening up of a gap in the excitation spectra. On cooling to 1.3 K (which is above the ordering transition T_N ~ 1.0 K) the resonance spectrum is transformed into a wide band of excitations with the gap amounting to Δ~ 26 GHz (1.2 K) in Gd2Ti2O7 and 18 GHz (0.8 K) in Gd2Sn2O7. The gaps increase linearly with the external magnetic field. For Gd2Ti2O7 this branch co-exists with an additional nearly paramagnetic line absent in Gd2Sn2O7. These low lying excitations with gaps, which are preformed in the spin-liquid state, may be interpreted as collective spin modes split by the single-ion anisotropy.

Magnetic resonance in a pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7

Electron spin resonance study of frustrated pyrochlore Gd2Ti2O7 is performed in a wide frequency band for a temperature range 0.4-30 K, which covers paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases. The paramagnetic resonance reveals the spectroscopic g-factor about 2.0 and a temperature dependent linewidth. In ordered phases magnetic resonance spectra are distinctive for a nonplanar cubic (or tetrahedral) antiferromagnet with an isotropic susceptibility. In the high-field saturated phase, weakly-dispersive soft modes are observed and their field evolution is traced.

Quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice RbFe(MoO4)2

RbFe(MoO4)2 is a rare example of a nearly two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. Magnetic resonance spectra and magnetization curves reveal that the system has a layered spin structure with six magnetic sublattices. The sublattices within a layer are arranged in a triangular manner with the magnetization vectors 120 degree apart. The H-T phase diagram, containing at least five different magnetic phases is constructed. In zero field, RbFe(MoO4)2 undergoes a phase transition at T_N=3.8 K into a non-collinear triangular spin structure with all the spins confined in the basal plane. The application of an in-plane magnetic field induces a collinear spin state between the fields H_c1=47 kOe and H_c2=71 kOe and produces a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturation moment. Both the ESR and the magnetization measurements also clearly indicate an additional first-order phase transition in a field of 35 kOe. The exact nature of this phase transition is uncertain.
