Modelling $W^+ W^-$ production with rapidity gaps at the LHC

We present a new calculation of $W^+ W^-$ production in the semi-exclusive channel, that is either with intact outgoing protons or rapidity gaps present in the final state, and with no colour flow between the colliding protons. This study provides the first complete prediction of the $W^+ W^-$ semi-exclusive cross section, as well as the breakdown between elastic and proton dissociative channels. It combines the structure function calculation for a precise modelling of the region of low momentum transfers with a parton-level calculation in the region of high momentum transfers. The survival factor probability of no additional proton-proton interactions is fully accounted for, including its kinematic and process dependence. We analyse in detail the role that the pure photon-initiated ($γγ\to W^+ W^-$) subprocess plays, a comparison that is only viable by working in the electroweak axial gauge. In this way, we find that the dominance of this is not complete in the proton dissociative cases, although once $Z$-initiated production is included a significantly better matching to the complete calculation is achieved. A direct consequence of this is that the relative elastic, single and double dissociative fractions are in general different in comparison to the case of lepton pair production. We present a direct comparison to the recent ATLAS data on semi-exclusive $W^+ W^-$ production, finding excellent agreement within uncertainties. Our calculation is provided in the publicly available SuperChic 4.1 Monte Carlo (MC) generator, and can be passed to a general purpose MC for showering and hadronization of the final state.

Parton distributions from LHC, HERA, Tevatron and fixed target data: MSHT20 PDFs

We present the new MSHT20 set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, determined from global analyses of the available hard scattering data. The PDFs are made available at NNLO, NLO, and LO, and supersede the MMHT14 sets. They are obtained using the same basic framework, but the parameterisation is now adapted and extended, and there are 32 pairs of eigenvector PDFs. We also include a large number of new data sets: from the final HERA combined data on total and heavy flavour structure functions, to final Tevatron data, and in particular a significant number of new LHC 7 and 8 TeV data sets on vector boson production, inclusive jets and top quark distributions. We include up to NNLO QCD corrections for all data sets that play a major role in the fit, and NLO EW corrections where relevant. We find that these updates have an important impact on the PDFs, and for the first time the NNLO fit is strongly favoured over the NLO, reflecting the wider range and in particular increased precision of data included in the fit. There are some changes to central values and a significant reduction in the uncertainties of the PDFs in many, though not all, cases. Nonetheless, the PDFs and the resulting predictions are generally within one standard deviation of the MMHT14 results. The major changes are the $u-d$ valence quark difference at small $x$, due to the improved parameterisation and new precise data, the $\bar d, \bar u$ difference at small $x$, due to a much improved parameterisation, and the strange quark PDF due to the effect of LHC $W,Z$ data and inclusion of new NNLO corrections for dimuon production in neutrino DIS. We discuss the phenomenological impact of our results, and in general find reduced uncertainties in predictions for processes such as Higgs, top quark pair and $W,Z$ production at post LHC Run-II energies.

Physics with Leptons and Photons at the LHC

We present a phenomenological study of photon-initiated (PI) lepton production at the LHC, as implemented in the structure function (SF) approach. We provide detailed predictions for multi-differential lepton pair production, and show that the impact on observables sensitive to the the weak mixing angle, $\sin^2 θ_W$, and $W$ boson mass, $M_W$, as well as PDFs can be non-negligible, in particular given the high precision being aimed for. The SF calculation can provide percent level precision in the corresponding production cross sections, and is therefore well positioned to account for LHC precision requirements. We consider the pure $γγ$ channel, and compare in detail to the NLO collinear calculation. We in addition include initial-state $Z$ as well as mixed $γ/Z + q$ contributions, and assess their impact. We also consider photon-initiated lepton-lepton scattering, and again find the SF approach can provide high precision predictions for this process in way that can straightforwardly account for any fiducial cuts imposed. Finally, we provide a publicly available Monte Carlo generator, SFGen, for PI lepton pair production and lepton-lepton scattering within the SF approach, for use by the community.

QED Parton Distribution Functions in the MSHT20 Fit

We present the MSHT20qed set of parton distribution functions (PDFs). These are obtained from the MSHT20 global analysis via a refit including QED corrections to the DGLAP evolution at ${\cal O}(α),{\cal O}(αα_S)$ and ${\cal O}(α^2)$, and containing the photon PDF of the proton. As in the previous MMHT15qed study we use an input distribution for the photon that is derived from the LUXqed formulation, and find good consistency for the photon PDF with that of MMHT15qed, as well as with other recent sets. We also present a set of QED corrected neutron PDFs and accompanying photon distribution, and provide the photon PDF of the nucleons separated into elastic and inelastic contributions. We assess the general expectations for the impact of photon-initiated (PI) corrections to processes entering PDF fits, and review the effect of QED corrections on the other partons and on the fit quality, where electroweak corrections (including PI production) are appropriately added to the cross sections wherever possible. We explore the phenomenological implications of this set by comparing to a variety of benchmark cross sections, finding small but significant corrections due to the inclusion of QED effects in the PDFs.

Charm and beauty quark masses in the MMHT2014 global PDF analysis

We investigate the variation in the MMHT2014 PDFs when we allow the heavy quark masses $m_c$ and $m_b$ to vary away from their default values. We make PDF sets available in steps of $Δm_c =0.05~{\rm GeV}$ and $Δm_b =0.25~{\rm GeV}$, and present the variation in the PDFs and in the predictions. We examine the comparison to the HERA data on charm and beauty structure functions and note that in each case the heavy quark data, and the inclusive data, have a slight preference for lower masses than our default values. We provide PDF sets with 3 and 4 active quark flavours, as well as the standard value of 5 flavours. We use the pole mass definition of the quark masses, as in the default MMHT2014 analysis, but briefly comment on the $\overline{\rm MS}$ definition.

Exclusive physics at the LHC with SuperChic 2

We present a range of physics results for central exclusive production processes at the LHC, using the new SuperChic 2 Monte Carlo event generator. This includes significant theoretical improvements and updates, most importantly a fully differential treatment of the soft survival factor, as well as a greater number of generated processes. We provide an overview of the latest theoretical framework, and consider in detail a selection of final states, namely exclusive 2 and 3 jets, photoproduced vector mesons, two-photon initiated muon and $W$ boson pairs and heavy $χ_{c,b}$ quarkonia.

Jet activity as a probe of high-mass resonance production

We explore the method of using the measured jet activity associated with a high mass resonance state to determine the corresponding production modes. To demonstrate the potential of the approach, we consider the case of a resonance of mass $M_R$ decaying to a diphoton final state. We perform a Monte Carlo study, considering three mass points $M_R=0.75,\,1.5\,,2.5$ TeV, and show that the $γγ$, $WW$, $gg$ and light and heavy $q\overline{q}$ initiated cases lead to distinct predictions for the jet multiplicity distributions. As an example, we apply this result to the ATLAS search for resonances in diphoton events, using the 2015 data set of $3.2\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Taking the spin-0 selection, we demonstrate that a dominantly $gg$-initiated signal hypothesis is mildly disfavoured, while the $γγ$ and light quark cases give good descriptions within the limited statistics, and a dominantly $WW$-initiated hypothesis is found to be in strong tension with the data. We also comment on the $b\overline{b}$ initial state, which can already be constrained by the measured $b$-jet multiplicity. Finally, we present expected exclusion limits with integrated luminosity, and demonstrate that with just a few 10's of ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ we can expect to constrain the production modes of such a resonance.

Photon-initiated processes at high mass

We consider the influence of photon-initiated processes on high-mass particle production. We discuss in detail the photon PDF at relatively high parton $x$, relevant to such processes, and evaluate its uncertainties. In particular we show that, as the dominant contribution to the input photon distribution is due to coherent photon emission, at phenomenologically relevant scales the photon PDF is already well determined in this region, with the corresponding uncertainties under good control. We then demonstrate the implications of this result for the example processes of high-mass lepton and $W$ boson pair production at the LHC and FCC. While for the former process the photon-initiated contribution is expected to be small, in the latter case we find that it is potentially significant, in particular at larger masses.

Sudakov effects in photon-initiated processes

We consider the effect of the Sudakov factor in photon-initiated processes, corresponding to the no branching probability for the initial-state photon. We demonstrate how such a factor follows simply from the solution of the DGLAP equation for the photon PDF, and is therefore included automatically by this. We use this result to argue that the appropriate scale for the QED coupling $α$ associated with an initial-state photon is not the virtuality of the photon, but rather the factorization scale at which the photon PDF is evaluated, and therefore that the use of the on-shell renormalization scheme is not appropriate for such processes. We also discuss exclusive photon-initiated processes, and demonstrate that no explicit Sudakov factor is required in this case.

The photon PDF in events with rapidity gaps

We consider photon-initiated events with large rapidity gaps in proton-proton collisions, where one or both protons may break up. We formulate a modified photon PDF that accounts for the specific experimental rapidity gap veto, and demonstrate how the soft survival probability for these gaps may be implemented consistently. Finally, we present some phenomenological results for the two-photon induced production of lepton and $W$ boson pairs.

The production of a diphoton resonance via photon-photon fusion

Motivated by the recent LHC observation of an excess of diphoton events around an invariant mass of 750 GeV, we discuss the possibility that this is due to the decay of a new scalar or pseudoscalar resonance dominantly produced via photon-photon fusion. We present a precise calculation of the corresponding photon-photon luminosity in the inclusive and exclusive scenarios, and demonstrate that the theoretical uncertainties associated with these are small. In the inclusive channel, we show how simple cuts on the final state may help to isolate the photon-photon induced cross section from any gluon-gluon or vector boson fusion induced contribution. In the exclusive case, that is where both protons remain intact after the collision, we present a precise cross section evaluation and show how this mode is sensitive to the parity of the object, as well as potential $CP$-violating effects. We also comment on the case of heavy-ion collisions and consider the production of new heavy colourless fermions, which may couple to such a resonance.

Exclusive production of double $J/ψ$ mesons in hadronic collisions

We present the first calculation of exclusive double $J/ψ$ production in hadronic collisions. We analyse in detail the form of the Born-level $gg \to J/ψJ/ψ$ amplitudes within the non-relativistic quarkonium approximation and discuss the implications of this for the central exclusive production channel, within the `Durham' perturbative model. In addition we show that this direct single parton scattering contribution is expected to be strongly dominant in the exclusive case. We present predictions for the LHC and show that the expected cross sections are in reasonable agreement with the LHCb Run-I measurement of exclusive double $J/ψ$ production, with the measured invariant mass distribution described well by the theory. Motivated by this encouraging result we present predictions for observables that may be measured in LHC Run-II, and estimate the size of the expected cross sections in the $ψ(2S)$ and $χ_{c}$ cases.

Parton distributions in the LHC era: MMHT 2014 PDFs

We present LO, NLO and NNLO sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton determined from global analyses of the available hard scattering data. These MMHT2014 PDFs supersede the `MSTW2008' parton sets, but are obtained within the same basic framework. We include a variety of new data sets, from the LHC, updated Tevatron data and the HERA combined H1 and ZEUS data on the total and charm structure functions. We also improve the theoretical framework of the previous analysis. These new PDFs are compared to the `MSTW2008' parton sets. In most cases the PDFs, and the predictions, are within one standard deviation of those of MSTW2008. The major changes are the $u-d$ valence quark difference at small $x$ due to an improved parameterisation and, to a lesser extent, the strange quark PDF due to the effect of certain LHC data and a better treatment of the $D \to μ$ branching ratio. We compare our MMHT PDF sets with those of other collaborations; in particular with the NNPDF3.0 sets, which are contemporary with the present analysis.

Planar radiation zeros in five-parton QCD amplitudes

We demonstrate the existence of `planar', or `type-II', radiation zeros in 5-parton QCD scattering processes. That is, the Born amplitudes are shown to completely vanish for particular kinematic configurations, when all the particle 3-momenta lie in a plane. This result is shown to follow particularly simply from the known BCJ relations between the colour-ordered tree amplitudes, and the MHV formalism is used to express the additional kinematic constraint as a relatively simple expression in terms of only rapidity differences between the final-state partons. In addition, we find that zeros exist for non-planar configurations of the final-state partons, but for which the normal `type-I' conditions on the particle four-momenta do not generally apply. We present numerical results and comment on the possibility of observing planar radiation zeros in hadronic collisions, via central exclusive three-jet production.

The Effect of Final HERA inclusive Cross Section Data on MMHT2014 PDFs

We investigate the effect of including the HERA run I + II combined cross section data on the MMHT2014 PDFs. We present the fit quality within the context of the global fit and when only the HERA data are included. We examine the changes in both the central values and uncertainties in the PDFs. We find that the prediction for the data is good, and only relatively small improvements in $χ^2$ and changes in the PDFs are obtained with a refit at both NLO and NNLO. PDF uncertainties are slightly reduced. There is a small dependence of the fit quality on the value of $Q^2_{\min}$.

Uncertainties on $α_S$ in the MMHT2014 global PDF analysis and implications for SM predictions

We investigate the uncertainty in the value of the strong coupling $α_S(M_Z^2)$ when allowing it to be a free parameter in the recent MMHT global analyses of deep-inelastic and related hard scattering data that was undertaken to determine the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. The analysis uses the standard framework of leading twist fixed--order collinear factorisation in the ${\overline {\rm MS}}$ scheme. We study the constraints on the value of $α_S(M_Z^2)$ coming from the individual data sets by repeating the NNLO and NLO global analyses at various fixed values of $α_S(M_Z^2)$ about its optimum values, spanning the range $α_S(M_Z^2)=0.108$ to $0.128$ in units of $0.001$, and making all PDFs sets available. The inclusion of the measurements of the cross section for inclusive $t\bar{t}$ production in the global fit allows us to explore the correlation between the values taken for the mass $m_t$ of the top quark and $α_S(M_Z^2)$. We find that the best fit values are $α_S(M_Z^2)=0.1201\pm0.0015$ and $0.1172\pm 0.0013$ at NLO and NNLO respectively, with the central values changing to $α_S(M_Z^2)=0.1195$ and $0.1178$ when the world average of $α_S(M_Z^2)$ is used as a data point. We investigate the interplay between the uncertainties on $α_S(M_Z^2)$ and the uncertainties on the PDFs. In particular we calculate the cross sections for key processes at the LHC and show how the uncertainties coming from the standard MMHT2014 PDFs and from $α_S(M_Z^2)$ can be provided independently and can be combined.

Modeling exclusive meson pair production at hadron colliders

We present a study of the central exclusive production of light meson pairs, concentrating on the region of lower invariant masses of the central system and/or meson transverse momentum, where perturbative QCD cannot be reliably applied. We describe in detail a phenomenological model, using the tools of Regge theory, that may be applied with some success in this regime, and we present the new, publicly available, Dime Monte Carlo (MC) implementation of this for $ππ$, $KK$ and $ρρ$ production. The MC includes a fully differential treatment of the survival factor, which in general depends on all kinematic variables, as well as allowing for the so far reasonably unconstrained model parameters to be set by the user. We present predictions for the Tevatron and LHC and show how future measurements may further test this Regge--based approach, as well as the soft hadronic model required to calculate the survival factor, in particular in the presence of tagged protons.

A simple form for the low-x generalized parton distributions in the skewed regime

We show that the generalized parton distributions (GPDFs) in the 'skewed' $x \approx ξ<< 1$ regime can be related in a particularly simple way to the usual diagonal distributions. This follows directly from the Shuvaev transform, but bypasses a direct evaluation of the poorly convergent double integral which this relation contains, thus allowing for a more transparent understanding of the physics involved; it avoids the necessity for any further low-x approximations for the diagonal partons, as well as permitting a clearer application to cases when the GPDFs unintegrated over the parton transverse momentum are required. We consider for illustration the specific examples of the central exclusive production of a Standard Model Higgs boson, and the photoproduction of a Upsilon meson at the LHC, and show how a careful evaluation of the GPDFs, which our simple results allow, is required to correctly calculate the predicted cross sections.

Central exclusive production as a probe of the gluonic component of the eta' and eta mesons

Currently, the long-standing issue concerning the size of the gluonic content of the eta' and eta mesons remains unsettled. With this in mind we consider the central exclusive production (CEP) of eta', eta meson pairs in the perturbative regime, applying the Durham pQCD-based model of CEP and the `hard exclusive' formalism to evaluate the meson production subprocess. We calculate for the first time the relevant parton-level processes gg --> qqbar gg and gg --> gggg, where the final-state gg and qqbar pairs form a pseudoscalar flavour-singlet state. We observe that these amplitudes display some non-trivial and interesting theoretical properties, and we comment on how this can be understood in a MHV framework. Finally, we present a phenomenological study, and show that the cross sections for the CEP of eta', eta meson pairs are strongly sensitive to the size of the gluon content of these mesons. The observation of these processes could therefore provide important and novel insight into this problem.

preprint2013arXiv

Exclusive meson pair production and the gluonic component of the eta, eta' mesons

We present the results of recent work on the central exclusive production of meson pairs. We concentrate on the case of flavour-singlet pseudoscalar mesons eta, eta' and show that the central exclusive process, as modelled using a recent novel application of the 'hard exclusive' perturbative formalism, is potentially highly sensitive to the size of the gluon content of these states. We also discuss the exclusive production of meson pairs in the lower mass region, and present the first results of the new Dime Monte Carlo.

Probing the perturbative dynamics of exclusive meson pair production

We present the results of a recent novel application of the `hard exclusive' perturbative formalism to the process gg --> MMbar at large angles, where M (Mbar) is a light meson (anti-meson). As well as discussing the important theoretical features of the relevant leading-order gg --> qqbar(gg) qqbar(gg) 6-parton amplitudes, we also comment on their phenomenological implications. In particular, we consider the central exclusive production of meson pairs at comparatively large transverse momentum k_t, which is expected to proceed via this mechanism. We show that this leads to various non-trivial predictions for a range of exclusive processes, and that the cross sections for the eta' and eta mesons display significant sensitivity to any valence gg component of the meson wavefunctions.

A novel technique for measuring masses of a pair of semi-invisibly decaying particles

Motivated by evidence for the existence of dark matter, many new physics models predict the pair production of new particles, followed by the decays into two invisible particles, leading to a momentum imbalance in the visible system. For the cases where all four components of the vector sum of the two `missing' momenta are measured from the momentum imbalance, we present analytic solutions of the final state system in terms of measureable momenta, with the mass shell constraints taken into account. We then introduce new variables which allow the masses involved in the new physics process, including that of the dark matter particles, to be extracted. These are compared with a selection of variables in the literature, and possible applications at lepton and hadron colliders are discussed.

The phenomenology of central exclusive production at hadron colliders

Central exclusive production (CEP) processes in high-energy hadron-hadron collisions provide an especially clean environment in which to measure the nature and quantum numbers (in particular, the spin and parity) of new resonance states. Encouraged by the broad agreement between experimental measurements and theoretical predictions based on the Durham approach, we perform a detailed phenomenological analysis of diphoton and meson pair CEP final states, paying particular attention to the theoretical uncertainties in the predictions, including those from parton distribution functions, higher-order perturbative corrections, and non-perturbative and proton dissociation contributions. We present quantitative cross-section predictions for these CEP final states at the RHIC, Tevatron and LHC colliders.

Central exclusive meson pair production in the perturbative regime

We present a study of the central exclusive production (CEP) of meson pairs, MMbar, at sufficiently high invariant mass that a perturbative QCD formalism is applicable. Within this framework, MMbar production proceeds via the gg --> MMbar hard scattering sub-process, which can be calculated within the hard exclusive formalism. We present explicit calculations for the gg --> MMbar helicity amplitudes for different meson states and, using these, show results for meson pair CEP in the perturbative regime.

preprint2011arXiv

Central exclusive meson pair production in the perturbative regime at hadron colliders

The central exclusive production (CEP) of heavy resonance states that subsequently decay into meson pairs, MMbar, is an important signature for such processes at hadron colliders. However there is a potentially important background from the direct QCD production of meson pairs, as mediated for example by the exclusive gg --> MMbar hard scattering subprocess. This is in fact an interesting process in its own right, testing novel aspects of perturbative QCD technology. We explicitly calculate the gg --> MMbar helicity amplitudes for different meson states within the hard exclusive formalism, and comment on the application of MHV techniques to the calculation. Using these results, we describe how meson pair CEP can be calculated in the perturbative regime, and present some sample numerical predictions for a variety of final states. We also briefly consider the dominant non-perturbative contributions, which are expected to be important when the meson transverse momentum is small.

Central exclusive quarkonium production with tagged forward protons at RHIC

We study the Central Exclusive Production (CEP) of chi_cJ and eta_c mesons at RHIC in proton-proton collisions. We consider the chi_cJ --> J/psi + gamma decay channels and, recalling that the J_z=0 suppression of the J=1,2 states can be compensated by their larger branchings to J/psi + gamma, present predictions of rates and distributions for chi_c(0,1,2) production. Particular attention is paid to the impact of p_t cuts applied to the outgoing protons, which can influence the relative rates significantly. The distribution in the azimuthal angle difference between the outgoing protons and the proton p_t^2 is also studied, and shown to depend sensitively on the spin and parity of the centrally produced meson, as well as being affected by the soft survival factors, S^2. Two- and four-body decays, which are particularly relevant for chi_c0 production, are also considered. We show that in the two-body case, backgrounds from `direct' QCD production based on both perturbative and non-perturbative models are expected to be under control.

Measuring the masses of a pair of semi-invisibly decaying particles in central exclusive production with forward proton tagging

We discuss how the mass of new physics particles involved in a pair of short decay chains leading to two invisible particles, for example slepton pair production, followed by the decay into two leptons and two neutralinos, may be measured in central exclusive production (CEP) with forward proton tagging. We show how the existing mass measurement strategies in CEP may be improved by making full use of the mass-shell constraints, and demonstrate that, with around 30 signal events, the masses of the slepton and neutralino can be measured with an accuracy of a few GeV.

Central Diffractive Processes at the Tevatron, RHIC and LHC

Central exclusive production (CEP) processes in high-energy hadron collisions offer a very promising framework for studying both novel aspects of QCD and new physics signals. We report on the results of a theoretical study of the CEP of heavy quarkonia (chi and eta) at the Tevatron, RHIC and LHC. These processes provide important information on the physics of bound states and can probe the current ideas and methods of QCD, such as effective field theories and lattice QCD.

Standard candle central exclusive processes at the Tevatron and LHC

Central exclusive production (CEP) processes in high-energy proton -- (anti)proton collisions offer a very promising framework within which to study both novel aspects of QCD and new physics signals. Among the many interesting processes that can be studied in this way, those involving the production of heavy (c,b) quarkonia and gamma gamma states have sufficiently well understood theoretical properties and sufficiently large cross sections that they can serve as `standard candle' processes with which we can benchmark predictions for new physics CEP at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Motivated by the broad agreement with theoretical predictions of recent CEP measurements at the Fermilab Tevatron, we perform a detailed quantitative study of heavy quarkonia (chi and eta) and gamma gamma production at the Tevatron, RHIC and LHC, paying particular attention to the various uncertainties in the calculations. Our results confirm the rich phenomenology that these production processes offer at present and future high-energy colliders.

preprint2009arXiv

Central exclusive chi_c meson production at the Tevatron revisited

Motivated by the recent experimental observation of exclusive chi_c events at the Tevatron, we revisit earlier studies of central exclusive scalar chi_c0 meson production, before generalising the existing formalism to include chi_c1 and chi_c2 mesons. Although chi_c0 production was previously assumed to be dominant, we find that the chi_c1 and chi_c2 rates for the experimentally considered chi_c -> J/psi gamma -> mu+ mu- gamma decay process are in fact comparable to the chi_c0 rate. We have developed a new Monte Carlo event generator, SuperCHIC, which models the central exclusive production of the three chi_c states via this decay chain, and have explored possible ways of distinguishing them, given that their mass differences are not resolvable within the current experimental set-up. Although we find that the severity of current experimental cuts appears to preclude this, the acceptance does not change crucially between the three states and so our conclusions regarding the overall rates remain unchanged. This therefore raises the interesting possibility that exclusive chi_c1 and chi_c2 production has already been observed at the Tevatron.
