Central exclusive production as a probe of the gluonic component of the eta' and eta mesons

Currently, the long-standing issue concerning the size of the gluonic content of the eta' and eta mesons remains unsettled. With this in mind we consider the central exclusive production (CEP) of eta', eta meson pairs in the perturbative regime, applying the Durham pQCD-based model of CEP and the `hard exclusive' formalism to evaluate the meson production subprocess. We calculate for the first time the relevant parton-level processes gg --> qqbar gg and gg --> gggg, where the final-state gg and qqbar pairs form a pseudoscalar flavour-singlet state. We observe that these amplitudes display some non-trivial and interesting theoretical properties, and we comment on how this can be understood in a MHV framework. Finally, we present a phenomenological study, and show that the cross sections for the CEP of eta', eta meson pairs are strongly sensitive to the size of the gluon content of these mesons. The observation of these processes could therefore provide important and novel insight into this problem.

Extended Parameterisations for MSTW PDFs and their effect on Lepton Charge Asymmetry from W Decays

We investigate the effect of extending the standard MSTW parameterisation of input parton distribution functions (PDFs) using Chebyshev polynomials. We find evidence that four powers in the polynomial are sufficient for extremely high precision. Applying this to valence and sea quarks we find an improvement in the global fit, but a significant change only in the small-$x$ valence up-quark PDF, $u_V$. We investigate the effect of also extending, and making more flexible, the `nuclear' correction to deuteron structure functions. The extended `Chebyshev' parameterisation results in an improved stability in the deuteron corrections that are required for the best fit to the `global' data. The resulting PDFs have a significantly, but not dramatically, altered valence down-quark distribution, $d_V$. For the extended set of MSTW PDFs, their uncertainties can be obtained using 23, rather than the usual 20, orthogonal `uncertainty' eigenvectors. Since the dominant effect is on the valence quarks, we present a detailed study of the dependence of the valence--sea separation on the predictions for the decay lepton charge asymmetry which results from $W^\pm$ production at the LHC, illustrating the PDFs and the $x$ range probed for different experimental scenarios. We show that the modified MSTW PDFs make significantly improved predictions for these data at the LHC, particularly for high values of the $p_T$ cut of the decay lepton. However, this is a special case, since the asymmetry is extremely sensitive to valence--sea details, and in particular to the combination $u_V-d_V$ of valence PDFs for $x \sim M_W/\sqrt{s}$ at low lepton rapidities. We show that the predictions for a wide variety of total cross sections are very similar to those obtained using the MSTW2008 PDFs, with changes being much smaller than the PDF uncertainties.

Probing the perturbative dynamics of exclusive meson pair production

We present the results of a recent novel application of the `hard exclusive' perturbative formalism to the process gg --> MMbar at large angles, where M (Mbar) is a light meson (anti-meson). As well as discussing the important theoretical features of the relevant leading-order gg --> qqbar(gg) qqbar(gg) 6-parton amplitudes, we also comment on their phenomenological implications. In particular, we consider the central exclusive production of meson pairs at comparatively large transverse momentum k_t, which is expected to proceed via this mechanism. We show that this leads to various non-trivial predictions for a range of exclusive processes, and that the cross sections for the eta' and eta mesons display significant sensitivity to any valence gg component of the meson wavefunctions.

A novel technique for measuring masses of a pair of semi-invisibly decaying particles

Motivated by evidence for the existence of dark matter, many new physics models predict the pair production of new particles, followed by the decays into two invisible particles, leading to a momentum imbalance in the visible system. For the cases where all four components of the vector sum of the two `missing' momenta are measured from the momentum imbalance, we present analytic solutions of the final state system in terms of measureable momenta, with the mass shell constraints taken into account. We then introduce new variables which allow the masses involved in the new physics process, including that of the dark matter particles, to be extracted. These are compared with a selection of variables in the literature, and possible applications at lepton and hadron colliders are discussed.

Charm production in association with an electroweak gauge boson at the LHC

The production of charm quark jets in association with electroweak gauge bosons at the LHC can be used as a tool to constrain quark parton distribution functions (PDFs). Motivated by recent measurements at the Tevatron and LHC, we calculate cross sections for $W/Z+c$, comparing these to $W/Z+\textrm{jet}$, for various PDF sets. The cross-section differences can be understood in terms of the different underlying PDFs, with the strange quark distribution being particularly important for $W+c$ production. We suggest measurements of appropriately defined ratios and comment on how these measurements at the LHC can be used to extract information on the strange and charm content of the proton at high $Q^2$ scales.

Electroweak corrections and Bloch-Nordsieck violations in 2-to-2 processes at the LHC

We consider the effect of next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak corrections to Standard Model 2-to-2 processes, taking into account the potentially large double logarithms originating from both real and virtual corrections. A study of the leading Sudakov logarithms is presented and Bloch-Nordsieck (BN) violations are discussed for processes at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In particular, we focus on the processes Z/photon+jet and also the ratio of Z to photon production. This ratio is known to be insensitive to NLO QCD corrections but this is not expected to be the case for the electroweak corrections. We also comment on the effect of electroweak corrections and the presence of BN violation for QCD processes, in particular dijet production, and also for purely electroweak processes such as W + H and W + Z associated production.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions

This Report summarises the results of the second year's activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) focuses on predictions (central values and errors) for total Higgs production cross sections and Higgs branching ratios in the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension, covering also related issues such as Monte Carlo generators, parton distribution functions, and pseudo-observables. This second Report represents the next natural step towards realistic predictions upon providing results on cross sections with benchmark cuts, differential distributions, details of specific decay channels, and further recent developments.

The phenomenology of central exclusive production at hadron colliders

Central exclusive production (CEP) processes in high-energy hadron-hadron collisions provide an especially clean environment in which to measure the nature and quantum numbers (in particular, the spin and parity) of new resonance states. Encouraged by the broad agreement between experimental measurements and theoretical predictions based on the Durham approach, we perform a detailed phenomenological analysis of diphoton and meson pair CEP final states, paying particular attention to the theoretical uncertainties in the predictions, including those from parton distribution functions, higher-order perturbative corrections, and non-perturbative and proton dissociation contributions. We present quantitative cross-section predictions for these CEP final states at the RHIC, Tevatron and LHC colliders.

Central exclusive meson pair production in the perturbative regime

We present a study of the central exclusive production (CEP) of meson pairs, MMbar, at sufficiently high invariant mass that a perturbative QCD formalism is applicable. Within this framework, MMbar production proceeds via the gg --> MMbar hard scattering sub-process, which can be calculated within the hard exclusive formalism. We present explicit calculations for the gg --> MMbar helicity amplitudes for different meson states and, using these, show results for meson pair CEP in the perturbative regime.

preprint2011arXiv

Central exclusive meson pair production in the perturbative regime at hadron colliders

The central exclusive production (CEP) of heavy resonance states that subsequently decay into meson pairs, MMbar, is an important signature for such processes at hadron colliders. However there is a potentially important background from the direct QCD production of meson pairs, as mediated for example by the exclusive gg --> MMbar hard scattering subprocess. This is in fact an interesting process in its own right, testing novel aspects of perturbative QCD technology. We explicitly calculate the gg --> MMbar helicity amplitudes for different meson states within the hard exclusive formalism, and comment on the application of MHV techniques to the calculation. Using these results, we describe how meson pair CEP can be calculated in the perturbative regime, and present some sample numerical predictions for a variety of final states. We also briefly consider the dominant non-perturbative contributions, which are expected to be important when the meson transverse momentum is small.

Central exclusive quarkonium production with tagged forward protons at RHIC

We study the Central Exclusive Production (CEP) of chi_cJ and eta_c mesons at RHIC in proton-proton collisions. We consider the chi_cJ --> J/psi + gamma decay channels and, recalling that the J_z=0 suppression of the J=1,2 states can be compensated by their larger branchings to J/psi + gamma, present predictions of rates and distributions for chi_c(0,1,2) production. Particular attention is paid to the impact of p_t cuts applied to the outgoing protons, which can influence the relative rates significantly. The distribution in the azimuthal angle difference between the outgoing protons and the proton p_t^2 is also studied, and shown to depend sensitively on the spin and parity of the centrally produced meson, as well as being affected by the soft survival factors, S^2. Two- and four-body decays, which are particularly relevant for chi_c0 production, are also considered. We show that in the two-body case, backgrounds from `direct' QCD production based on both perturbative and non-perturbative models are expected to be under control.

Effect of spin-3/2 top quark excitation on ttbar production at the LHC

A spin-3/2 top quark excitation originating in string realisations of the RS scenario has an effect on the production of top-antitop pairs in hadron-hadron collisions. We study the additional contribution of this state to the cross section for the LHC. We comment on the prospect of discovery or exclusion for a range of masses and couplings at both 7 and 14 TeV and show that the reach extends significantly with increasing centre-of-mass energy. Results are compared with the effect of a hypothetical spin-1/2 excited top as well as other BSM scenarios which predict the presence of higher dimension effective operators. We also calculate distributions for several observables which can be used to distinguish between the different scenarios in the presence of a deviation from the SM prediction for the ttbar cross section.

Eikonal regime of gravity-induced scattering at higher energy proton colliders

We compute transplanckian parton scattering in flat extra-dimensional theories at the LHC and at the recently discussed high-energy upgrade (HE LHC). We report new leading-order calculations of the QCD background. We apply appropriate cuts to satisfy the necessary conditions for the eikonal approximation to be valid while at the same time maximising the signal to background ratio at LHC energies. We study the computability of the eikonal signal and consider the effect of a possible 33 TeV high-energy upgrade to the LHC, which serves to extend the calculable region and to enhance the signal to background ratio.

Measuring the masses of a pair of semi-invisibly decaying particles in central exclusive production with forward proton tagging

We discuss how the mass of new physics particles involved in a pair of short decay chains leading to two invisible particles, for example slepton pair production, followed by the decay into two leptons and two neutralinos, may be measured in central exclusive production (CEP) with forward proton tagging. We show how the existing mass measurement strategies in CEP may be improved by making full use of the mass-shell constraints, and demonstrate that, with around 30 signal events, the masses of the slepton and neutralino can be measured with an accuracy of a few GeV.

NLO QCD Corrections to Graviton Induced Deep Inelastic Scattering

We consider Next-to-Leading-Order QCD corrections to ADD graviton exchange relevant for Deep Inelastic Scattering experiments. We calculate the relevant NLO structure functions by calculating the virtual and real corrections for a set of graviton interaction diagrams, demonstrating the expected cancellation of the UV and IR divergences. We compare the NLO and LO results at the centre-of-mass energy relevant to HERA experiments as well as for the proposed higher energy lepton-proton collider, LHeC, which has a higher fundamental scale reach.

Probing double parton scattering with leptonic final states at the LHC

We discuss the prospects of observing double parton scattering (DPS) processes with purely leptonic final states at the LHC. We first study same-sign W pair production, which is particularly suited for studying momentum and valence number conservation effects, followed by discussions on double Drell-Yan and production of J/psi pairs. The effects of initial state and intrinsic transverse momentum smearing on pair-wise transverse momentum balance characteristic to DPS are studied quantitatively. We also present a new technique, based on rapidity differences, to extract the DPS component from a double J/psi sample recently studied at the LHCb.

Prospects for observation of double parton scattering with four-muon final states at LHCb

We study the prospects for observing double parton scattering through four-muon final states, forming two opposite-sign muon pairs, in the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at 14 TeV centre of mass energy. We consider two special cases, namely double Drell-Yan and J/psi-pair production. The kinematic properties and prospects for observing these processes are discussed. We find that the production rate depends strongly on the origin of the four muons, while many kinematic properties can be used to help identify the presence of double parton scattering events.

The PDF4LHC Working Group Interim Report

This document is intended as a study of benchmark cross sections at the LHC (at 7 TeV) at NLO using modern parton distribution functions currently available from the 6 PDF fitting groups that have participated in this exercise. It also contains a succinct user guide to the computation of PDFs, uncertainties and correlations using available PDF sets. A companion note, also submitted to the archive, provides an interim summary of the current recommendations of the PDF4LHC working group for the use of parton distribution functions and of PDF uncertainties at the LHC, for cross section and cross section uncertainty calculations.

Using gamma+jets Production to Calibrate the Standard Model Z(nunu)+jets Background to New Physics Processes at the LHC

The irreducible background from Z(nunu)+jets, to beyond the Standard Model searches at the LHC, can be calibrated using gamma+jets data. The method utilises the fact that at high vector boson pT, the event kinematics are the same for the two processes and the cross sections differ mainly due to the boson-quark couplings. The method relies on a precise prediction from theory of the Z/gamma cross section ratio at high pT, which should be insensitive to effects from full event simulation. We study the Z/gamma ratio for final states involving 1, 2 and 3 hadronic jets, using both the leading-order parton shower Monte Carlo program Pythia8 and a leading-order matrix element program Gambos. This enables us both to understand the underlying parton dynamics in both processes, and to quantify the theoretical systematic uncertainties in the ratio predictions. Using a typical set of experimental cuts, we estimate the net theoretical uncertainty in the ratio to be of order 7%, when obtained from a Monte Carlo program using multiparton matrix-elements for the hard process. Uncertainties associated with full event simulation are found to be small. The results indicate that an overall accuracy of the method, excluding statistical errors, of order 10% should be possible.

Central Diffractive Processes at the Tevatron, RHIC and LHC

Central exclusive production (CEP) processes in high-energy hadron collisions offer a very promising framework for studying both novel aspects of QCD and new physics signals. We report on the results of a theoretical study of the CEP of heavy quarkonia (chi and eta) at the Tevatron, RHIC and LHC. These processes provide important information on the physics of bound states and can probe the current ideas and methods of QCD, such as effective field theories and lattice QCD.

Charge asymmetry in W + jets production at the LHC

The charge asymmetry in W + jets production at the LHC can serve to calibrate the presence of New Physics contributions. We study the ratio σ(W^+ + n jets)/σ(W^- + n jets) in the Standard Model for n <= 4, paying particular attention to the uncertainty in the prediction from higher-order perturbative corrections and uncertainties in parton distribution functions. We show that these uncertainties are generally of order a few percent, making the experimental measurement of the charge asymmetry ratio a particularly useful diagnostic tool for New Physics contributions.

Charge asymmetry ratio as a probe of quark flavour couplings of resonant particles at the LHC

We show how a precise knowledge of parton distribution functions, in particular those of the u and d quarks, can be used to constrain a certain class of New Physics models in which new heavy charged resonances couple to quarks and leptons. We illustrate the method by considering a left-right symmetric model with a W' from a SU(2)_R gauge sector produced in quark-antiquark annihilation and decaying into a charged lepton and a heavy Majorana neutrino. We discuss a number of quark and lepton mixing scenarios, and simulate both signals and backgrounds in order to determine the size of the expected charge asymmetry. We show that various quark-W' mixing scenarios can indeed be constrained by charge asymmetry measurements at the LHC, particularly at 14 TeV centre of mass energy.

Heavy-quark mass dependence in global PDF analyses and 3- and 4-flavour parton distributions

We study the sensitivity of our recent MSTW 2008 NLO and NNLO PDF analyses to the values of the charm- and bottom-quark masses, and we provide additional public PDF sets for a wide range of these heavy-quark masses. We quantify the impact of varying m_c and m_b on the cross sections for W, Z and Higgs production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We generate 3- and 4-flavour versions of the (5-flavour) MSTW 2008 PDFs by evolving the input PDFs and alpha_S determined from fits in the 5-flavour scheme, including the eigenvector PDF sets necessary for calculation of PDF uncertainties. As an example of their use, we study the difference in the Z total cross sections at the Tevatron and LHC in the 4- and 5-flavour schemes. Significant differences are found, illustrating the need to resum large logarithms in Q^2/m_b^2 by using the 5-flavour scheme. The 4-flavour scheme is still necessary, however, if cuts are imposed on associated (massive) b-quarks, as is the case for the experimental measurement of Z b bbar production and similar processes.

Standard candle central exclusive processes at the Tevatron and LHC

Central exclusive production (CEP) processes in high-energy proton -- (anti)proton collisions offer a very promising framework within which to study both novel aspects of QCD and new physics signals. Among the many interesting processes that can be studied in this way, those involving the production of heavy (c,b) quarkonia and gamma gamma states have sufficiently well understood theoretical properties and sufficiently large cross sections that they can serve as `standard candle' processes with which we can benchmark predictions for new physics CEP at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Motivated by the broad agreement with theoretical predictions of recent CEP measurements at the Fermilab Tevatron, we perform a detailed quantitative study of heavy quarkonia (chi and eta) and gamma gamma production at the Tevatron, RHIC and LHC, paying particular attention to the various uncertainties in the calculations. Our results confirm the rich phenomenology that these production processes offer at present and future high-energy colliders.

The effects of combined HERA and recent Tevatron W - > lepton neutrino charge asymmetry data on the MSTW PDFs

We examine the effect of including the `combined' HERA structure function data in the MSTW global fit for parton distribution functions (PDFs). The combined neutral-current HERA data have a significant, if not dramatic, effect, of up to 2--3% at NLO for Z boson and Higgs production at the Tevatron and LHC, and a generally slightly smaller effect, particularly on LHC processes, at NNLO. This is an amount comparable, or less than, the typical PDF uncertainties, and hence we do not intend to release an imminent update to the MSTW 2008 fit. We also investigate the consistency with the recent D0 data on electron and muon charge asymmetry from W decays and the direct CDF measurement of the W charge asymmetry. The D0 lepton charge asymmetry data imply a fairly large change to the down-quark distribution and/or large nuclear corrections to be applied when fitting to deuterium structure function data, while the CDF W charge asymmetry data are more consistent with the existing PDFs. However, it is difficult to reconcile all of the Tevatron W -> lepton neutrino charge asymmetry data sets with the fit, and to some extent, with each other.

Central exclusive chi_c meson production at the Tevatron revisited

Motivated by the recent experimental observation of exclusive chi_c events at the Tevatron, we revisit earlier studies of central exclusive scalar chi_c0 meson production, before generalising the existing formalism to include chi_c1 and chi_c2 mesons. Although chi_c0 production was previously assumed to be dominant, we find that the chi_c1 and chi_c2 rates for the experimentally considered chi_c -> J/psi gamma -> mu+ mu- gamma decay process are in fact comparable to the chi_c0 rate. We have developed a new Monte Carlo event generator, SuperCHIC, which models the central exclusive production of the three chi_c states via this decay chain, and have explored possible ways of distinguishing them, given that their mass differences are not resolvable within the current experimental set-up. Although we find that the severity of current experimental cuts appears to preclude this, the acceptance does not change crucially between the three states and so our conclusions regarding the overall rates remain unchanged. This therefore raises the interesting possibility that exclusive chi_c1 and chi_c2 production has already been observed at the Tevatron.

The FP420 R&D Project: Higgs and New Physics with forward protons at the LHC

We present the FP420 R&D project, which has been studying the key aspects of the development and installation of a silicon tracker and fast-timing detectors in the LHC tunnel at 420 m from the interaction points of the ATLAS and CMS experiments. These detectors would measure precisely very forward protons in conjunction with the corresponding central detectors as a means to study Standard Model (SM) physics, and to search for and characterise New Physics signals. This report includes a detailed description of the physics case for the detector and, in particular, for the measurement of Central Exclusive Production, pp --> p + phi + p, in which the outgoing protons remain intact and the central system phi may be a single particle such as a SM or MSSM Higgs boson. Other physics topics discussed are gamma-gamma and gamma-p interactions, and diffractive processes. The report includes a detailed study of the trigger strategy, acceptance, reconstruction efficiencies, and expected yields for a particular p p --> p H p measurement with Higgs boson decay in the b-bbar mode. The document also describes the detector acceptance as given by the LHC beam optics between the interaction points and the FP420 location, the machine backgrounds, the new proposed connection cryostat and the moving ("Hamburg") beam-pipe at 420 m, and the radio-frequency impact of the design on the LHC. The last part of the document is devoted to a description of the 3D silicon sensors and associated tracking performances, the design of two fast-timing detectors capable of accurate vertex reconstruction for background rejection at high-luminosities, and the detector alignment and calibration strategy.

Uncertainties of predictions from parton distributions. I: experimental errors

We determine the uncertainties on observables arising from the errors on the experimental data that are fitted in the global MRST2001 parton analysis. By diagonalizing the error matrix we produce sets of partons suitable for use within the framework of linear propagation of errors, which is the most convenient method for calculating the uncertainties. Despite the potential limitations of this approach we find that it can be made to work well in practice. This is confirmed by our alternative approach of using the more rigorous Lagrange multiplier method to determine the errors on physical quantities directly. As particular examples we determine the uncertainties on the predictions of the charged-current deep-inelastic structure functions, on the cross-sections for W production and for Higgs boson production via gluon--gluon fusion at the Tevatron and the LHC, on the ratio of W-minus to W-plus production at the LHC and on the moments of the non-singlet quark distributions. We discuss the corresponding uncertainties on the parton distributions in the relevant x,Q^2 domains. Finally, we briefly look at uncertainties related to the fit procedure, stressing their importance and using sigma_W, sigma_H and extractions of alpha_S(M_Z^2) as examples. As a by-product of this last point we present a slightly updated set of parton distributions, MRST2002.

MHV Techniques for QED Processes

Significant progress has been made in the past year in developing new `MHV' techniques for calculating multiparticle scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills gauge theories. Most of the work so far has focussed on applications to Quantum Chromodynamics, both at tree and one-loop level. We show how such techniques can also be applied to abelian theories such as QED, by studying the simplest tree-level multiparticle process, e^+e^- to n γ. We compare explicit results for up to n=5 photons using both the Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten `MHV rules' and the related Britto-Cachazo-Feng `recursion relation' approaches with those using traditional spinor techniques.

Diffractive gamma-gamma production at hadron colliders

We compute the cross section for exclusive double-diffractive gamma-gamma production at the Tevatron, $p{\bar p} \to p + γγ+ {\bar p}$, and the LHC. We evaluate both the gluon-gluon and quark-antiquark t-channel exchange contributions to the process. The observation of exclusive gamma-gamma production at the Tevatron will provide a check on the model predictions, and offer an opportunity to confirm the expectations for exclusive double-diffractive Higgs production at the LHC.

Inelastic J/psi and Upsilon hadroproduction

We consider the prompt hadroproduction of J/psi, psi' and the Upsilon (1S,2S,3S) states caused by the fusion of a symmetric colour-octet two-gluon state and an additional gluon. The cross sections are calculated in leading-order perturbative QCD. We find a considerable enhancement in comparison with previous perturbative QCD predictions. Indeed, the resulting cross sections are found to be consistent with the values measured at the Tevatron and RHIC, without the need to invoke non-perturbative `colour-octet' type of contributions.

Parton distributions incorporating QED contributions

We perform a global parton analysis of deep inelastic and related hard-scattering data, including ${\cal O}(α_{\rm QED})$ corrections to the parton evolution. Although the quality of the fit is essentially unchanged, there are two important physical consequences. First, the different DGLAP evolution of u and d type quarks introduces isospin violation, i.e. $u^p \neq d^n$, which is found to be unambiguously in the direction to reduce the NuTeV $\sin^2θ_W$ anomaly. A second consequence is the appearance of photon parton distributions $γ(x,Q^2)$ of the proton and the neutron. In principle these can be measured at HERA via the deep inelastic scattering processes $e N \to eγX$; our predictions are in agreement with the present data.

Physical Gluons and High $E_T$ Jets

We propose a more physical parameterization of the gluon distribution for global parton analyses of deep inelastic and related hard scattering data. In the new parameterization the gluon distribution at large x in the MSbar-scheme is driven by the valence quarks, which naturally produces a shoulder-like form at high x, and hence produces a better description of the Tevatron inclusive jet data. We perform the new analysis at both NLO and NNLO. The improvement is found to be even better at NNLO than at NLO. We make available the new sets of NLO and NNLO partons, which we denote by MRST2004.

Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

The spread of the gluon k_t-distribution and the determination of the saturation scale at hadron colliders in resummed NLL BFKL

The transverse momentum distribution of soft hadrons and jets that accompany central hard-scattering production at hadron colliders is of great importance, since it has a direct bearing on the ability to separate new physics signals from Standard Model backgrounds. We compare the predictions for the gluonic k_t-distribution using two different approaches: resummed NLL BFKL and DGLAP evolution. We find that as long as the initial and final virtualities (k_t) along the emission chain are not too close to each other, the NLL resummed BFKL results do not differ significantly from those obtained using standard DGLAP evolution. The saturation momentum Q_s(x), calculated within the resummed BFKL approach, grows with 1/x even slower than in the leading-order DGLAP case.

Energy Consumption and Jet Multiplicity from the Leading Log BFKL Evolution

We study the associated jet multiplicity arising from t-channel BFKL gluon evolution in forward dijet production at hadron colliders. Previous results have shown that the effect of conserving overall energy and momentum is to introduce a pdf suppression that completely compensates the predicted exponential BFKL rise with rapidity difference between the leading dijets. However, we show that there is still expected to be a significant amount of BFKL radiation, especially in the central region, and we give predictions for the multiplicity of the resulting mini-jets at the LHC.

We study central Z-boson production accompanied by rapidity gaps on either side as a way to gauge Higgs weak boson fusion production at the LHC. MRST2001: partons and alpha_S from precise deep inelastic scattering and Tevatron jet data

We use all the available new precise data for deep inelastic and related hard scattering processes to perform NLO global parton analyses. These new data allow an improved determination of partons and, in particular, the inclusion of the recent measurements of the structure functions at HERA and of the inclusive jets at the Tevatron help to determine the gluon distribution and alpha_S better than ever before. We find a somewhat smaller gluon at low x than previous determinations and that alpha_S(M_Z^2) = 0.119 +/- 0.002 (expt.) +/- 0.003 (theory).

W Boson Production with Associated Jets at Large Rapidities

We analyse W boson production at hadron colliders in association with one or two jets, both with the exact kinematics and in the high-energy limit. We argue that the configurations that are kinematically favoured tend to have the W boson forward in rapidity. Thus W boson production in association with jets lends itself naturally to extensions to the high-energy limit, which we examine both at leading order and by resumming higher-order corrections through the BFKL theory.

Estimating the effect of NNLO contributions on global parton analyses

We use the recent estimates of NNLO splitting functions, made by van Neerven and Vogt, to perform exploratory fits to deep inelastic and related hard scattering data. We investigate the hierarchy of parton distributions obtained at LO, NLO and NNLO, and, more important, the stability of the resulting predictions for physical observables. We use the longitudinal structure function $F_L$ and the cross sections $σ_W, σ_Z$ for $W$ and $Z$ hadroproduction as examples. For $F_L$ we find relatively poor convergence, with increasing order, at small $x$; whereas $σ_{W,Z}$ are much more reliably predicted.

Impact of the W boson decay width on photon bremsstrahlung accompanying W pair production

The bremsstrahlung spectrum of photons accompanying $W$ pair production depends on the decay width of the unstable $W$ bosons. The dependence arises from the interference between emission at different stages of the production and decay process. We present a quantitative discussion of this effect, and consider the implications for measurements at LEP2 and LC energies.

On the Resummation of Subleading Logarithms in the Transverse Momentum Distribution of Vector Bosons Produced at Hadron Colliders

The perturbation series for electroweak vector boson production at small transverse momentum is dominated by large double logarithms at each order in perturbation theory. An accurate theoretical prediction therefore requires a resummation of these logarithms. This can be performed either directly in transverse momentum space or in impact parameter (Fourier transform) space. While both approaches resum the same leading double logarithms, the subleading logarithms are, in general, treated differently. We comment on two recent approaches to this problem, emphasising the particular subleading logarithms resummed in each case and the numerical differences in the cross sections which result.

Parton Distributions and the LHC: W and Z Production

W and Z bosons will be produced copiously at the LHC proton-proton collider. We study the parton distribution dependence of the total production cross sections and rapidity distributions, paying particular attention to the uncertainties arising from uncertainties in the parton distributions themselves. Variations in the gluon, the strong coupling, the sea quarks and the overall normalisation are shown to lead to small but non-negligible variations in the cross section predictions. Ultimately, therefore, the measurement of these cross sections will provide a powerful cross check on our knowledge of parton distributions and their evolution.

Restoring good high energy behaviour in Higgs production via W fusion at the LHC

The W-fusion scattering process W+W- --> ZZ for off-shell W bosons is studied, focusing on the issue of its high-energy behaviour which is known to be anomalous. It is shown that the unitarity violating terms can be isolated and extracted in a well-defined and efficient way using the pinch-technique. This restores the good high energy behaviour of the cross section and, in particular, makes possible the identification of the Higgs resonance in the invariant mass distribution M(ZZ) of the Z pair. The discarded terms, which are proportional to the off-shellness of the W bosons, cancel against similar terms originating from the remaining diagrams for the full physical process f1 f2 --> f1' f2' Z Z. This cancellation ensures the gauge invariance of our result, which therefore constitutes a meaningful separation between signal and background when they both contribute coherently. Equipped with this result, we are able to define a resonant approximation for the process p p --> Z Z + 2 jets + X, which circumvents the problem of good high energy behaviour without having to resort to the lengthy calculation of the complete set of diagrams. In this approximation only the W and Z fusion signal graphs are included, i.e. the ones which contain the Higgs resonance. We have verified that the approximate resonant cross section describes very well the full result not only close to the resonance but also beyond it.

Spin correlations in $e^+e^-\to 4 jets$

Existence of discrepancies between experimental data and Monte Carlo predictions for angular distributions in four-jet production via $e^+e^-$ annihilation has been known for some time at LEP1. As such QCD processes constitute significant backgrounds to $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-\to 4$-jet production at LEP2, we consider the possibility that an erroneous modelling of the helicity structure of the final-state partons could affect the accuracy of experimental measurements of the $W^\pm$ boson parameters

Dijet Production at Hadron--Hadron Colliders in the BFKL Approach

The production in high-energy hadron collisions of a pair of jets with large rapidity separation is studied in an improved BFKL formalism. By recasting the analytic solution of the BFKL equation as an explicit order-by-order sum over emitted gluons, the effects of phase space constraints and the running coupling are studied. Particular attention is paid to the azimuthal angle decorrelation of the jet pair. The inclusion of sub-leading effects significantly improves the agreement between the theoretical predictions and recent preliminary measurements from the Dzero collaboration.

Topology of Hadronic Flows for Higgs Production at Hadron Colliders

Hadronic radiation provides a tool to distinguish different topologies of colour flow in hard scattering processes. We study the structure of hadronic flow corresponding to Higgs production and decay in high-energy hadron-hadron collisions. In particular, the signal gg -> H -> b anti-b and background gg -> b anti-b processes are shown to have very different radiation patterns, and this may provide an useful additional method for distinguishing Higgs signal events from the QCD background.

Consistent Treatment of Charm Evolution in Deep Inelastic Scattering

We present a formulation which allows heavy quark (c, b, ...) mass effects to be explicitly incorporated in both the coefficient functions and the splitting functions in the parton evolution equations. We obtain a consistent procedure for evolution through the threshold regions for c anti-c and b anti-b production in deep inelastic scattering, which allows the prediction of the charm and bottom quark densities. We use the new formulation to perform a next-to-leading order global parton analysis of deep inelastic and related hard scattering data. We find that the optimum fit has alpha_S(M_Z^2) = 0.118. We give predictions for the charm components of the proton structure functions F_2 and F_L as functions of x and Q^2 and, in particular, find that F_2^c is in good agreement with the existing measurements. We examine the Q^2 range of validity of the photon-gluon fusion model for c anti-c electroproduction. We emphasize the value of a precision measurement of the charm component F_2^c at HERA.

QCD Corrections and the Leptoquark Interpretation of the HERA High Q^2 Events

The excess of high-$Q^2$ events found by H1 and ZEUS at HERA in $e^+p$ deep-inelastic scattering above the Standard Model prediction motivates us to calculate the NLO QCD corrections to the HERA scalar leptoquark (or squark) production cross sections. We find that the corrections are significant, of order 50% in the mass range of interest. We also calculate the leptoquark average transverse momentum squared and find it to be rather small. Various leptoquark production cross sections at the Tevatron $p \bar p$ collider are also considered. We investigate in detail the leptoquark interpretation of the HERA data. First we assume a minimal leptoquark model with a single diagonal Yukawa coupling to first family lepton and quark mass eigenstates only. In this case constraints from atomic parity violating experiments allow only isodoublet scalar leptoquark production at HERA. This interpretation can be confirmed or ruled out in the near future by high luminosity data at the Tevatron. The Tevatron data already appear to rule out the vector leptoquark interpretation of the HERA data. We also consider a more general model which allows for all possible left-handed, right-handed, flavour and lepton number changing couplings. The allowed values of the Yukawa couplings of this general model offer several different interpretations of the data which are radically different from the minimal model solutions. However these somewhat ad hoc tuned solutions can easily be tested by future HERA experiments.

Radiation Zeros in High-Energy $e^+e^-$ Annihilation into Hadrons

The process $e^+e^- \to q \bar q γ$ contains radiation zeros, i.e. configurations of the four-momenta for which the scattering amplitude vanishes. We calculate the positions of these zeros for $u$--quark and $d$--quark production and assess the feasibility of identifying the zeros in experiments at high energies. The radiation zeros are shown to occur also for massive quarks, and we discuss how the $b \bar b γ$ final state may offer a particularly clean environment in which to observe them.

Gluon Radiation in $t\bar t$ Production and Decay at the LHC

Understanding the pattern of gluon radiation in $t \bar t$ production and decay processes is important for making an accurate determination of the top mass from the momenta of its decay products. The larger energy of the LHC $pp$ collider boosts the top cross section by a factor of 100 compared to that at the Tevatron, but it also increases the amount of additional gluon radiation. We calculate the cross section for gluon radiation in top production and decay at the LHC. The distributions of this radiation are presented and the exact matrix-element results are compared with results from the HERWIG parton-shower Monte Carlo.

Soft Gluon Radiation in Top Events: Effect of Hadronic $W$ Decays

In reconstructing the top quark momentum from its decay products, one must account for extra jets that can result from radiation of gluons. In this paper we study soft gluon radiation in top production and decay at the Fermilab Tevatron. We consider the cases where one or both $W$ bosons decays hadronically, {\it i.e.}, where at least one of the top quarks can be fully reconstructed. We show results for gluon distributions at the Tevatron and find that radiation from the $W$ decay products contributes substantially in the central region.

$e^+e^- \to b\bar b W^+W^-$ events at the Next Linear Collider: colour structure of top signal and irreducible background

We examine the colour structure and charged particle yield for both the $t \bar t$ signal and the irreducible background processes contributing to \eebbww\ production close to the \ttb\ threshold. The charged particle multiplicity for the various components of the cross section is computed as a function of several kinematic variables. Our study may have important implications for recently proposed studies of interconnection phenomena in \ttb\ production at high--energy $e^+e^-$ colliders

Analytic Approaches to the Evolution of Polarised Parton Distributions at Small $x$

The $Q^2$ evolution of polarised parton distributions at small $x$ is studied. Various analytic approximations are critically discussed. We compare the full evolution with that obtained from the leading-pole approximation to the splitting functions, and show that the validity of this approximation depends critically on the $x \to 0$ behaviour of the starting distributions. A new analytic solution which is valid at small $x$ is obtained, and its domain of applicability is discussed.

Pinning down the Glue in the Proton

The latest measurements of $F_2$ at HERA allow for a {\it combination} of gluon and sea quark distributions at small $x$ that is significantly different from those of existing parton sets. We perform a new global fit to deep-inelastic and related data. We find a gluon distribution which is larger for $x \lapproxeq 0.01$, and smaller for $x \sim 0.1$, and a flatter input sea quark distribution than those obtained in our most recent global analysis. The new fit also gives $α_s(M_Z^2) = 0.114$. We study other experimental information available for the gluon including, in particular, the constraints coming from fixed-target and collider prompt $γ$ production data.

Polarized Parton Distributions in the Nucleon

The distribution of the spin of the nucleon among its constituents can be parametrized in the form of polarized parton distribution functions for quarks and gluons. Using all available data on the polarized structure function $g_1(x,Q^2)$, we determine these distributions both at leading and next-to-leading order in perturbation theory. We suggest three different, equally possible scenarios for the polarized gluon distribution, which is found to be only loosely constrained by current experimental data. We examine various possibilities of measuring polarized parton distributions at future experiments.

The Measurement of M(W) from the W+W- Threshold Cross Section at LEP2

The rapid increase of the e+e- --> W+W- cross section in the threshold region provides a method for measuring M(W) at LEP2. The dependence of the theoretical cross section -- including the effects of the finite W width, Coulomb interactions and initial state radiation -- on the collider energy and on the mass and width of the W is investigated in order to deduce the optimal collider energy which maximizes the sensitivity to M(W). Statistical and systematic uncertainties are studied in detail. The background contribution from QCD four-jet production is estimated. It is shown that by running LEP2 at a collision energy of approximately 161 GeV and obtaining a luminosity of order 100 inverse picobarns per experiment, an uncertainty on the measured value of M(W) of +-70 MeV should be achievable.

Gluon Radiation and Energy Losses in Top Quark Production

The emission of energetic gluons in $\tt$ production in $\ee$ annihilation can have important experimental consequences, in particular on top quark mass measurements. We present compact, analytical expressions for the gluon energy distribution and its average value at first order in QCD perturbation theory. Our results are valid for arbitrary masses, collision energies and production currents. We pay particular attention to top quark production near threshold, and show that in certain cases the soft gluon approximation is insufficient to describe the radiation spectrum.

Parton Distributions of the Proton

To obtain improved parton densities of the proton, we present a new global analysis of deep inelastic and related data including, in particular, the recent measurements of $F_2$ at HERA, of the asymmetry of the rapidity distributions of $W^\pm$ production at the FNAL $pp$ collider and of the asymmetry in Drell-Yan production in $pp$ and $pn$ collisions. We also incorporate data to determine the flavour dependence of the quark sea distributions. We find that the behaviour of the partons at small $x$ is consistent with the precocious onset of BFKL leading $\log(1/x)$ dynamics. We discuss the ambiguities remaining in the gluon distribution. We present improved predictions for $W$ boson (and $t$ quark) production at the FNAL $\pp$ collider.

Spin-dependent Parton Distributions from Polarized Structure Function Data

In the past year, polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments at CERN and SLAC have obtained structure function measurements off proton, neutron and deuteron targets at a level of precision never before achieved. The measurements can be used to test the Bjorken and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules, and also to obtain information on the parton distributions in polarized nucleons. We perform a global leading-order QCD fit to the proton deep inelastic data in order to extract the spin-dependent parton distributions. By using parametric forms which are consistent with theoretical expectations at large and small $x$, we find that the quark distributions are now rather well constrained. We assume that there is no significant intrinsic polarization of the strange quark sea. The data are then consistent with a modest amount of the proton's spin carried by the gluon, although the shape of the gluon distribution is not well constrained, and several qualitatively different shapes are suggested. The spin-dependent distributions we obtain can be used as input to phenomenological studies for future polarized hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron colliders.

Three-jet final states and measuring the $γγ$ width of the Higgs at a photon linear collider

The identification of the intermediate-mass Higgs process $γγ\to H \to b \bar b$ will be one of the most important goals of a future photon linear collider. Potentially important backgrounds from the continuum $γγ\to c \bar c, b \bar b$ leading-order processes can be suppressed by a factor $m_q^2/s$ by using polarized photon beams in the $J_z=0$ initial-state configuration. We show that the same $m_q^2/s$ suppressions do not necessarily apply to the radiative processes $γγ\to c \bar c g, b \bar b g$. These processes can mimic the two-jet topology of the Higgs signal when two of the three partons are collinear, or when one of the partons is soft or directed down the beam pipe. We calculate the contribution of these processes to the two-jet background in the $J_z=0$ channel. We investigate the effect of imposing additional event shape, jet width and secondary vertex cuts on both signal and background, and show that with reasonable detector capabilities it should be possible to reduce the background to a manageable level.
