Simple Inference on a Simplex-Valued Weight

In many applications, the parameter of interest involves a simplex-valued weight which is identified as a solution to an optimization problem. Examples include synthetic control methods with group-level weights and various methods of model averaging and forecast combinations. The simplex constraint on the weight poses a challenge in statistical inference due to the constraint potentially binding. In this paper, we propose a simple method of constructing a confidence set for the weight using an adaptive test based on the projection on a polyhedral cone and prove that the method is asymptotically uniformly valid. The procedure does not require tuning parameters or simulations to compute critical values. The confidence set accommodates both the cases of point-identification or set-identification of the weight. We illustrate the method with an empirical example.

A Berry-Esseen Bound for Vector-valued Martingales

This note provides a conditional Berry-Esseen bound for the sum of a martingale difference sequence $\{X_i\}_{i=1}^n$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge 1$, adapted to a filtration $\{\mathcal{F}_i\}_{i=1}^n$. We approximate the conditional distribution of $S=\sum_{i=1}^n X_i$ given some $σ$-field $\mathcal{F}_0\subset \mathcal{F}_1$ by that of a mean-zero normal random vector having the same conditional variance given $\mathcal{F}_0 $ as the vector $S$. Assuming that the conditional variances $\mathsf{E}[X_iX_i^{\top}\mid\mathcal{F}_{i-1}]$, $i\ge 1$, are $\mathcal{F}_0$-measurable and non-singular, and the third conditional moments of $\|X_i\|$, $ i\ge 1 $, given $\mathcal{F}_0$ are uniformly bounded, we present a simple bound on the conditional Kolmogorov distance between $S$ and its approximation given $\mathcal{F}_0$ which is of order $O_{a.s.}([\ln(ed)]^{5/4}n^{-1/4})$.

A Decomposition Analysis of Diffusion Over a Large Network

Diffusion over a network refers to the phenomenon of a change of state of a cross-sectional unit in one period leading to a change of state of its neighbors in the network in the next period. One may estimate or test for diffusion by estimating a cross-sectionally aggregated correlation between neighbors over time from data. However, the estimated diffusion can be misleading if the diffusion is confounded by omitted covariates. This paper focuses on the measure of diffusion proposed by He and Song (2022), provides a method of decomposition analysis to measure the role of the covariates on the estimated diffusion, and develops an asymptotic inference procedure for the decomposition analysis in such a situation. This paper also presents results from a Monte Carlo study on the small sample performance of the inference procedure.

Local Asymptotic Minimax Estimation of Nonregular Parameters with Translation-Scale Equivariant Maps

When a parameter of interest is defined to be a nondifferentiable transform of a regular parameter, the parameter does not have an influence function, rendering the existing theory of semiparametric efficient estimation inapplicable. However, when the nondifferentiable transform is a known composite map of a continuous piecewise linear map with a single kink point and a translation-scale equivariant map, this paper demonstrates that it is possible to define a notion of asymptotic optimality of an estimator as an extension of the classical local asymptotic minimax estimation. This paper establishes a local asymptotic risk bound and proposes a general method to construct a local asymptotic minimax decision.

Counterfactual Analysis under Partial Identification Using Locally Robust Refinement

Structural models that admit multiple reduced forms, such as game-theoretic models with multiple equilibria, pose challenges in practice, especially when parameters are set-identified and the identified set is large. In such cases, researchers often choose to focus on a particular subset of equilibria for counterfactual analysis, but this choice can be hard to justify. This paper shows that some parameter values can be more "desirable" than others for counterfactual analysis, even if they are empirically equivalent given the data. In particular, within the identified set, some counterfactual predictions can exhibit more robustness than others, against local perturbations of the reduced forms (e.g. the equilibrium selection rule). We provide a representation of this subset which can be used to simplify the implementation. We illustrate our message using moment inequality models, and provide an empirical application based on a model with top-coded data.

Testing for a General Class of Functional Inequalities

In this paper, we propose a general method for testing inequality restrictions on nonparametric functions. Our framework includes many nonparametric testing problems in a unified framework, with a number of possible applications in auction models, game theoretic models, wage inequality, and revealed preferences. Our test involves a one-sided version of $L_{p}$ functionals of kernel-type estimators $(1\leq p <\infty )$ and is easy to implement in general, mainly due to its recourse to the bootstrap method. The bootstrap procedure is based on nonparametric bootstrap applied to kernel-based test statistics, with estimated "contact sets." We provide regularity conditions under which the bootstrap test is asymptotically valid uniformly over a large class of distributions, including the cases that the limiting distribution of the test statistic is degenerate. Our bootstrap test is shown to exhibit good power properties in Monte Carlo experiments, and we provide a general form of the local power function. As an illustration, we consider testing implications from auction theory, provide primitive conditions for our test, and demonstrate its usefulness by applying our test to real data. We supplement this example with the second empirical illustration in the context of wage inequality.

Uniform Asymptotics for Nonparametric Quantile Regression with an Application to Testing Monotonicity

In this paper, we establish a uniform error rate of a Bahadur representation for local polynomial estimators of quantile regression functions. The error rate is uniform over a range of quantiles, a range of evaluation points in the regressors, and over a wide class of probabilities for observed random variables. Most of the existing results on Bahadur representations for local polynomial quantile regression estimators apply to the fixed data generating process. In the context of testing monotonicity where the null hypothesis is of a complex composite hypothesis, it is particularly relevant to establish Bahadur expansions that hold uniformly over a large class of data generating processes. In addition, we establish the same error rate for bootstrap local polynomial estimators which can be useful for various bootstrap inference. As an illustration, we apply to testing monotonicity of quantile regression and present Monte Carlo experiments based on this example.

Minimax Estimation of Nonregular Parameters and Discontinuity in Minimax Risk

When a parameter of interest is nondifferentiable in the probability, the existing theory of semiparametric efficient estimation is not applicable, as it does not have an influence function. Song (2014) recently developed a local asymptotic minimax estimation theory for a parameter that is a nondifferentiable transform of a regular parameter, where the nondifferentiable transform is a composite map of a continuous piecewise linear map with a single kink point and a translation-scale equivariant map. The contribution of this paper is two fold. First, this paper extends the local asymptotic minimax theory to nondifferentiable transforms that are a composite map of a Lipschitz continuous map having a finite set of nondifferentiability points and a translation-scale equivariant map. Second, this paper investigates the discontinuity of the local asymptotic minimax risk in the true probability and shows that the proposed estimator remains to be optimal even when the risk is locally robustified not only over the scores at the true probability, but also over the true probability itself. However, the local robustification does not resolve the issue of discontinuity in the local asymptotic minimax risk.

Semiparametric Models with Single-Index Nuisance Parameters

In many semiparametric models, the parameter of interest is identified through conditional expectations, where the conditioning variable involves a single-index that is estimated in the first step. Among the examples are sample selection models and propensity score matching estimators. When the first-step estimator follows cube-root asymptotics, no method of analyzing the asymptotic variance of the second step estimator exists in the literature. This paper provides nontrivial sufficient conditions under which the asymptotic variance is not affected by the first step single index estimator regardless of whether it is root-n or cube-root consistent. The finding opens a way to simple inference procedures in these models. Results from Monte Carlo simulations show that the procedures perform well in finite samples.
