The totally nonnegative part of the finite Toda lattice via a reducible rational curve

A totally nonnegative matrix is a real-valued matrix whose minors are all nonnegative. In this paper, we concern with the totally nonnegative structure of the finite Toda lattice, a classical integrable system, which is expressed as a differential equation of square matrices. The Toda flow naturally translates into a (multiplicative) linear flow on the (generalized) Jacobi variety associated with some reducible rational curve $X$. This correspondence provides an algebro-geometric characterization of the totally positive part of the Toda equation. We prove that the totally nonnegative part of the finite Toda lattice is isomorphic to a connected component of $\mathrm{Jac}(X)_{\mathbb{R}}$, the real part of the generalized Jacobi variety $\mathrm{Jac}(X)$, as semi-algebraic varieties.

Codimension one connectedness of the graph of associated varieties

Let $ π$ be an irreducible Harish-Chandra $ (\mathfrak{g}, K) $-module, and denote its associated variety by $ AV(π) $. If $ AV(π) $ is reducible, then each irreducible component must contain codimension one boundary component. Thus we are interested in the codimension one adjacency of nilpotent orbits for a symmetric pair $ (G, K) $. We define the notion of orbit graph and associated graph for $ π$, and study its structure for classical symmetric pairs; number of vertices, edges, connected components, etc. As a result, we prove that the orbit graph is connecetd for even nilpotent orbits. Finally, for indefinite unitary group $ U(p, q) $, we prove that for each connected component of the orbit graph $ Γ_K(O_λ) $ thus defined, there is an irreducible Harish-Chandra module $ π$ whose associated graph is exactly equal to the connceted component.

Enhanced orbit embedding

Let $ \tilde{G} $ be an algebraic group acting on a variety $ \tilde{L} $, and $ G \subset \tilde{G} $ a subgroup which leaves a subvariety $ L \subset \tilde{L} $ stable. For a $ G $-orbit $ O_G = G u (u \in L) $ in $ L $, we can associate an orbit $ O_{\tilde{G}} = \tilde{G} u $ of $ \tilde{G} $ so that we get a map $ L/G \to \tilde{L}/\tilde{G} $ between orbit spaces, though this map is usually not injective. In this note, when $ G $ is a symmetric subgroup arising from an involutive anti-automorphism, we give certain sufficient conditions for the map $ L/G \to \tilde{L}/\tilde{G} $ to be injective after the method of Ohta (2008). Our main concern here is to produce examples of enhanced Lie algebras (or enhanced $ θ$-representations). We also analyze an obstruction which prevents the orbit space inclusion.

On orbits in double flag varieties for symmetric pairs

Let $ G $ be a connected, simply connected semisimple algebraic group over the complex number field, and let $ K $ be the fixed point subgroup of an involutive automorphism of $ G $ so that $ (G, K) $ is a symmetric pair. We take parabolic subgroups $ P $ of $ G $ and $ Q $ of $ K $ respectively and consider the product of partial flag varieties $ G/P $ and $ K/Q $ with diagonal $ K $-action, which we call a \emph{double flag variety for symmetric pair}. It is said to be \emph{of finite type} if there are only finitely many $ K $-orbits on it. In this paper, we give a parametrization of $ K $-orbits on $ G/P \times K/Q $ in terms of quotient spaces of unipotent groups without assuming the finiteness of orbits. If one of $ P \subset G $ or $ Q \subset K $ is a Borel subgroup, the finiteness of orbits is closely related to spherical actions. In such cases, we give a complete classification of double flag varieties of finite type, namely, we obtain classifications of $ K $-spherical flag varieties $ G/P $ and $ G $-spherical homogeneous spaces $ G/Q $.

Closed orbits on partial flag varieties and double flag variety of finite type

Let $ G $ be a connected reductive algebraic group over $ \C $. We denote by $ K = (G^θ)_{0} $ the identity component of the fixed points of an involutive automorphism $ θ$ of $ G $. The pair $ (G, K) $ is called a symmetric pair. Let $Q$ be a parabolic subgroup of $K$. We want to find a pair of parabolic subgroups $P_{1}$, $P_{2}$ of $G$ such that (i) $P_{1} \cap P_{2} = Q$ and (ii) $P_{1} P_{2}$ is dense in $G$. The main result of this article states that, for a simple group $G$, we can find such a pair if and only if $(G, K)$ is a Hermitian symmetric pair. The conditions (i) and (ii) yield to conclude that the $K$-orbit through the origin $(e P_{1}, e P_{2})$ of $G/P_{1} \times G/P_{2}$ is closed and it generates an open dense $G$-orbit on the product of partial flag variety. From this point of view, we also give a complete classification of closed $K$-orbits on $G/P_{1} \times G/P_{2}$.

Asymptotic cone of semisimple orbits for symmetric pairs

Let G be a reductive algebraic group over the complex field and O_h be a closed adjoint orbit through a semisimple element h. By a result of Borho and Kraft (1979), it is known that the asymptotic cone of the orbit O_h is the closure of a Richardson nilpotent orbit corresponding to a parabolic subgroup whose Levi component is the centralizer Z_G(h) in G. In this paper, we prove an analogue on a semisimple orbit for a symmetric pair (G, K).

Double flag varieties for a symmetric pair and finiteness of orbits

Let G be a reductive algebraic group over the complex number filed, and K = G^θ be the fixed points of an involutive automorphism θof G so that (G, K) is a symmetric pair. We take parabolic subgroups P and Q of G and K respectively and consider a product of partial flag varieties G/P and K/Q with diagonal K-action. The double flag variety G/P \times K/Q thus obtained is said to be of finite type if there are finitely many K-orbits on it. A triple flag variety G/P^1 \times G/P^2 \times G/P^3 is a special case of our double flag varieties, and there are many interesting works on the triple flag varieties. In this paper, we study double flag varieties G/P \times K/Q of finite type. We give efficient criterion under which the double flag variety is of finite type. The finiteness of orbits is strongly related to spherical actions of G or K. For example, we show a partial flag variety G/P is K-spherical if a product of partial flag varieties G/P \times G/θ(P) is G-spherical. We also give many examples of the double flag varieties of finite type, and for type AIII, we give a classification when P = B is a Borel subgroup of G.

Resolution of null fiber and conormal bundles on the Lagrangian Grassmannian

We study the null fiber of a moment map related to dual pairs. We construct an equivariant resolution of singularities of the null fiber, and get conormal bundles of closed $ K_C $-orbits in the Lagrangian Grassmannian as the categorical quotient. The conormal bundles thus obtained turn out to be a resolution of singularities of the closure of nilpotent $ K_C $-orbits, which is a "quotient" of the resolution of the null fiber.

Theta lifting of nilpotent orbits for symmetric pairs

We consider a reductive dual pair (G, G') in the stable range with G' the smaller member and of Hermitian symmetric type. We study the theta lifting of nilpotent K'_C-orbits, where K' is a maximal compact subgroup of G' and we describe the precise K_C-module structure of the regular function ring of the closure of the lifted nilpotent orbit of the symmetric pair (G, K). As an application, we prove sphericality and normality of the closure of certain nilpotent K_C-orbits obtained in this way. We also give integral formulas for their degrees.
