Emergent nematicity and intrinsic vs. extrinsic electronic scattering processes in the kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

Fermi surface fluctuations and lattice instabilities in the 2D metallic kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ are elucidated via polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a weak electronic continuum in high-quality samples marks the cross-over into the charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered phase, while impurity-rich samples promote strong defect-induced electronic scattering processes that affect the coherence of the CDW phase. CDW-induced phonon anomalies appear below $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}$, with emergent $C2$ symmetry for one of the CDW amplitude modes, alluding to nematicity. In conjunction with symmetry-breaking lattice distortions, a kink-like hardening of the A$_{1g}$ phonon energy at $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}$ signifies a concerted interplay of electronic correlations and electron-phonon coupling in the exotic CDW order.

Dimer Crystallization Induced by Elemental Substitution in the Honeycomb Lattice of Ru1-xOsxCl3

Substitution effects of Os for Ru in α-RuCl3 are investigated in a wide composition range of 0 =< x =< 0.67 in Ru1-xOsxCl3 by X-ray and electron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Apart from the Kitaev physics with antiferromagnetic interactions increasing with x, a rich phase diagram is obtained, which includes an antiferromagnetic long-range order below 12 K for x =< 0.15, a dome-shaped spin-singlet dimer phase below 130 K for 0.15 =< x =< 0.40, and a magnetic short-range order for x > 0.40. A dimerization as similarly observed in α-RuCl3 under high pressure occurs in the spin-singlet phase. It is suggested that Ru-Os pairs in the solid solutions tend to form dimers with short bonds and trigger the first-order transition in the presence of pseudo-threefold rotational symmetry for dimerization around a substituted Os atom only at low substitutions. This is a rare example of molecular orbital crystallization induced by elemental substitution in a highly disordered system. The short-range order at high substitutions may be related to a random-singlet state stabilized by bond disorder in the honeycomb net.

Observation of a random singlet state in a diluted Kitaev honeycomb material

We report a $^{35}$Cl nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of the diluted Kitaev material $α$-Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$Cl$_3$ ($x=0.1$ and $0.2$) where non-magnetic Ir$^{3+}$ dopants substitute Ru$^{3+}$ ions. Upon dilution, the $^{35}$Cl spectra exhibit unusual large magnetic inhomogeneity, which sets in at temperatures below the Kitaev exchange energy scale. At the same time, the $^{35}$Cl spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ as a function of dilution and magnetic field unravels a critical doping of $x_c\approx 0.22$, towards which both the field-induced spin gap and the zero-field magnetic ordering are simultaneously suppressed, while novel gapless low-energy spin excitations dominate the relaxation process. These NMR findings point to the stabilization of a random singlet phase in $α$-Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$Cl$_3$, arising from the interplay of dilution and exchange frustration in the quantum limit.

Giant thermal magnetoconductivity in CrCl$_3$ and a general model for spin-phonon scattering

Insulating quantum magnets lie at the forefront both of fundamental research into quantum matter and of technological exploitation in the increasingly applied field of spintronics. In this context, the magnetic thermal transport is a particularly sensitive probe of the elementary spin and exotic topological excitations in unconventional magnetic insulators. However, magnetic contributions to heat conduction are invariably intertwined with lattice contributions, and thus the issue of spin-phonon coupling in determining the spin and thermal transport properties becomes more important with emergent topological magnetic system. Here we report the observation of an anomalously strong enhancement of the thermal conductivity, occurring at all relevant temperatures, in the layered honeycomb material CrCl$_3$ in the presence of an applied magnetic field. Away from the magnetically ordered phase at low temperatures and small fields, there is no coherent spin contribution to the heat conduction, and hence the effect must be caused by a strong suppression of the phonon thermal conductivity due to magnetic fluctuations, which are in turn suppressed by the field. We build an empirical model for the thermal conductivity of CrCl$_3$ within a formalism assuming an independently determined number of spin-flip processes and an efficiency of the phonon scattering events they mediate. By extracting the intrinsic phonon thermal conductivity we obtain a quantitative description at all fields and temperatures and demonstrate that the scattering efficiency is entirely independent of the field. In this way we use CrCl$_3$ as a model system to understand the interactions between spin and phonon excitations in the context of thermal transport. We anticipate that the completely general framework we introduce will have broad implications for the interpretation of transport phenomena in magnetic quantum materials.

Magnon bound states vs. anyonic Majorana excitations in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

The pure Kitaev honeycomb model harbors a quantum spin liquid in zero magnetic fields, while applying finite magnetic fields induces a topological spin liquid with non-Abelian anyonic excitations. This latter phase has been much sought after in Kitaev candidate materials, such as $α$-RuCl$_3$. Currently, two competing scenarios exist for the intermediate field phase of this compound ($B=7-10$ T), based on experimental as well as theoretical results: (i) conventional multiparticle magnetic excitations of integer quantum number vs. (ii) Majorana fermionic excitations of possibly non-Abelian nature with a fractional quantum number. To discriminate between these scenarios a detailed investigation of excitations over a wide field-temperature phase diagram is essential. Here we present Raman spectroscopic data revealing low-energy quasiparticles emerging out of a continuum of fractionalized excitations at intermediate fields, which are contrasted by conventional spin-wave excitations. The temperature evolution of these quasiparticles suggests the formation of bound states out of fractionalized excitations.

Doping effects on charge density instability in non-centrosymmetric PbxTaSe2

We report on the investigation of vibrational and electronic properties of the Pb doped dichalcogenide PbxTaSe2 using Raman scattering experiments. We observe a marked variation of the main vibrational modes with Pb concentration x. The concentration dependence of the vibrational modes resembles the dependence of the vibrational modes in TaSe2 on the number of crystallographic layers along the c axis direction [1]. The temperature and polarization dependence of Raman spectra of PbxTaSe2 revealed additional broad modes in the low frequency regime which are discussed in context of remnant charge density wave, induced disorder, or PbSe phase formed in the interface of Pb and TaSe2 layers.

Lattice and orbital fluctuations in TiPO4

In the s = 1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain material TiPO4 the formation of a spin gap takes place in a two step process with two characteristic temperatures, T*=111 K and TSP=74 K. We observe an unusual lattice dynamics over a large temperature regime as well as evidence for an orbital instability preceding the spin-Peierls transition. We relate different intrachain exchange interactions of the high temperature compared to the spin-Peierls phase to a modification of the orbital ordering pattern. In particular, our observation of a high energy excitation of mixed electronic and lattice origin suggests an exotic dimerization process different from other spin-Peierls materials.

Softened magnetic excitations in the s = 3/2 distorted triangular antiferromagnet alpha-CaCr2O4

The spin dynamics and magnetic excitations of the slightly distorted triangular s = 3/2 system alpha-CaCr2O4 are investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy and electron spin resonance (ESR) to elucidate its peculiar magnetic properties. Two-magnon excitations in circular RL symmetry show a multi-maximum structure with a dominant spectral weight at low energies. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is described by a critical broadening DeltaHpp(T) ~ (T - T_N)^{-p} with the exponent p = 0.30(3) - 0.38(5) for temperatures above T_N = 42.6 K. The exponent is much smaller than that of other s = 3/2 triangular lattices. This is ascribed to soft roton-like modes, indicative of the instability of a helical 120° phase. As an origin we discuss a complex spin topology formed by four inequivalent nearest neighbor and sizable next-nearest neighbor interactions.

Coupled spin-lattice fluctuations in a compound with orbital degrees of freedom: the Cr based dimer system Sr3Cr2O8

We report on an extended fluctuation regime in the spin dimer system Sr3Cr2O8 based on anomalies in Raman active phonons and magnetic scattering. The compound has two characteristic temperatures, TS = 275 K, related to a Jahn-Teller transition with structural distortions and orbital ordering and a second, T*= 150 K, which is due to further changes in the orbital sector. Below TS quasielastic scattering marks strong fluctuations and in addition phonon anomalies are observed. For temperatures below T* we observe an exponential decrease of one phonon linewidth and determine a gap of the orbital excitations. At low temperatures the observation of two- and three-magnon scattering allows the determination of the spin excitation gap.

Interplay of electronic correlations and lattice instabilities in BaVS3

The quasi-one-dimensional metallic system BaVS3 with a metal-insulator transition at T_MI=70 K shows large changes of the optical phonon spectrum, a central peak, and an electronic Raman scattering continuum that evolve in a three-step process. Motivated by the observation of a strongly fluctuating precursor state at high temperatures and orbital ordering and a charge gap at low temperatures we suggest a concerted action of the orbital, electronic, and lattice subsystems dominated by electronic correlations.
