Phase evolution and enhanced room temperature piezoelectric properties response of lead-free Ru doped BaTiO3 ceramic

Recent years have witnessed considerable work on the development of lead-free piezoelectric ceramic materials and their structure-property correlations. The development of piezo response is a strong function of phase evolution in these materials. In this work, we report the effect of Ru doping and consequent phase evolution on maximization of piezoelectric response of polycrystalline lead-free barium titanate, depicted as Ba(RuxTi1-x)O3 (BRT). The samples were prepared in a narrow compositional range of using conventional solid-state reaction method. Ru doping increases the leakage current of BaTiO3 samples attributed to increased oxygen vacancy concentration due to substitution of Ti4+ by Ru3+. Detailed structural analysis reveals samples exhibiting coexistence of tetragonal (space group: P4mm) and orthorhombic (space group: Amm2) structured phases near the room temperature reveal relatively enhanced piezoelectric properties. The BRT sample with Ru content of 2 mol% yields a maximum longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient, d33 of 269 pC/N, a high strain value of 0.16% with a large remnant polarization of 19 micro C/cm2 and a coercive field of 5.8 kV/cm. We propose that the 4d orbital of Ruthenium plays a crucial role in improving the functional properties and in decreasing the ferroelectric Curie temperature (Tc). Our work provides clues into tailoring the phase evolution for designing lead-free piezoelectric materials with enhanced piezoelectric property.

Room Temperature Structural, Magnetic and Dielectric Characteristics of La Doped CuO Bulk Multiferroic

In this manuscript, we report room temperature structural, microstructural, optical, dielectric, and magnetic properties of CuO and Cu0.995La0.005 ceramics, synthesized by solid-state reaction method. La doping in CuO leads to the evolution of compact and dense microstructure with reduced porosity. Due to noticeable differences in the ionic radii of, La doping creates vacancy defects which induce considerable strain in the CuO lattice resulting in a reduction in the lattice parameters and cell volume. However, both ceramics processes a similar monoclinic structure with the C2/c space group. Detailed characterization using XPS, Raman, and FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the incorporation of the La3+ in CuO lattice. Interestingly, La doping enhances the dielectric constant by more than three times and results in a reduced leakage current. The onset of a large dielectric constant is attributed to dense microstructure and strain/distortion in CuO lattice after La doping. Additionally, the band-gap of Cu0.995La0.005 ceramics decreases which is attributed to increased vacancy defect concentration that creates intermediate dopant energy level within bandgap of CuO matrix. Furthermore, improvement in magnetic and dielectric properties is also discussed and correlated with the grain size in La-doped CuO.

High Pressure Structural Investigation on Lead-Free Piezoelectric $0.5Ba(Ti_{0.8}Zr_{0.2})O_3$-$0.5(Ba_{0.7}Ca_{0.3})TiO_3$

The solid solution $0.5Ba(Ti_{0.8}Zr_{0.2})O_3$-$0.5(Ba_{0.7}Ca_{0.3})TiO_3$ (BCZT) has become a promising member of the lead-free piezoelectric materials because of its exceptionally high piezoelectric properties. In this study, we focus on studying pressure-dependent Raman spectroscopy, powder x-ray diffraction and dielectric constant measurements on BCZT. The data show several structural transitions are present, where the system from ambient mixed phase (tetragonal, {\it {P4mm}}+ orthorhombic {\it {Amm2}}) transforms into single phase ({\it {P4mm}}) at 0.26 GPa, then converts into cubic phase ({\it {Pm3m}}) at 4.7 GPa followed by another possible structural re-ordering around 10 GPa. Although there have been a lot of unanimity with the ambient crystallographic state of BCZT, our analysis justifies the presence of an intermediate orthorhombic phase in the Morphological Phase Boundary (MPB) of BCZT phase diagram. The transformation tetragonal to cubic is indicated by the Raman mode softening, unit cell volume change and the $(Ti/Zr)O_6$ octahedra distortion, which coincides with the well-known ferroelectric-paraelectric transition of the system. The sudden drop in the dielectric constant value at 4.7 GPa also confirms the loss of ferroelectric nature of the BCZT ceramic.

Dielectric Investigation, Piezoelectric Measurement and Structural Studies of Strontium-doped, modified PMS-PZT Piezoelectric Ceramics

The structure and dielectric properties of 6% $\rm{Sr}^{2+}$-substituted, modified Lead Zirconium Titanate (PZT) piezoelectric ceramic, with composition $[\rm{Pb}_{0.94}\rm{Sr}_{0.06}][(\rm{Mn}_{1/3}\rm{Sb}_{2/3})_{0.05}(\rm{Zr}_{0.54}\rm{Ti}_{0.46})_{0.95}]O_3$ and lead manganese antimonite as an additional dopant, synthesized by ceramic route have been investigated in a frequency range from 50Hz to 1MHz and in a temperature range between room temperature and 633K. The scanning electron micrograph of the sample taken at the room temperature confirms the formation of a fairly homogenous structure and well-formed grains with sharp boundaries. From the Rietveld analysis, it was found that the structure of the material is tetragonal with space group P4mm. The scaling behavior of imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests that the relaxation is described by the same mechanism at various temperatures. The values of the electromechanical coupling factor ($\rm{k_p}$), the high mechanical quality factor ($\rm{Q_m}$) and the piezoelectric coefficient ($\rm{d}_{33}$) of the synthesized sintered & poled ceramics gives a good set of values for the piezoelectric properties when compared with related materials, useful for various interesting piezoelectric device applications.

Electronic Structure of Ordered Double Perovskite Ba2CoWO6

Ba2CoWO6 (BCoW) has been synthesized in polycrystalline form by solid state reaction at 1200C. Structural characterization of the compound was done through X-ray diffraction (XRD) followed by Rietveld analysis of the XRD pattern. The crystal structure is cubic, space group Fm-3m (No 225) with the lattice parameter, a=8.210A. Optical band-gap of the present system has been calculated using the UV-Vis Spectroscopy and Kubelka-Munk function, its value being 2.45 eV. A detailed study of the electronic properties has also been carried out using the density functional theory (DFT) techniques implemented on WIEN2k. Importance of electron-electron interaction between the Co ions leading to half-metallic behavior, crystal and exchange splitting together with the hybridization between O and Co, W has been investigated using the total and partial density of states.

Structural and Optical Studies on Manganese doped, Modified Sodium Potassium Lithium Niobate Lead-free Piezoelectric Ceramics

Structural and Optical properties of the (Na0.5 K0.5)y Li 1-y NbO3 (y = 0.934 & 0.936) ceramics have been explored in terms of the X-Ray diffraction patters, Rietveld analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Kubelka-Munk functions. Rietveld analysis of both these structures reveals them to be tetragonal with space group P4mm. It is found that increase in Li doping increases the optical band gap. Presence of additional hardening dopant MnO2 is found to have a uniform behavior for both these composition. With increasing MnO2 concentration, the band gap decreases indicative of increase in B-site cation and O-p orbitals. Different valences of the Mn ions and relative difference in the ionic radii of the Mn ions and Nb ion are most likely the reason for these optical properties.
