Non-universal Fermi polaron in quasi two-dimensional quantum gases

We consider an impurity problem in a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gas, where a spin-down impurity is immersed in a Fermi sea of N spin-up atoms. Using a variational approach and an effective two-channel model, we obtain the energies of the system for a wide range of interaction strength and for various different mass ratios between the impurity and the back ground fermion in the context of heteronuclear mixture. It is demonstrated that in a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gas there exists a transition of the ground state from polaron in the weakly interacting region to molecule in the strongly interacting region. The critical interaction strength of the polaron-molecule transition is non-universal and depends on the particle density of the background Fermi sea. We also investigate the properties of the excited repulsive polaron state, and find similar non-universal behavior.

Precision measurements with cold atoms and trapped ions

Recent progresses on quantum control of cold atoms and trapped ions in both the scientific and technological aspects greatly advance the applications in precision measurement. Thanks to the exceptional controllability and versatility of these massive quantum systems, unprecedented sensitivity has been achieved in clocks, magnetometers and interferometers based on cold atoms and ions. Besides, these systems also feature many characteristics that can be employed to facilitate the applications in different scenarios. In this review, we briefly introduce the principles of optical clocks, cold atom magnetometers and atom interferometers used for precision measurement of time, magnetic field, and inertial forces. The main content is then devoted to summarize some recent experimental and theoretical progresses in these three applications, with special attention being paid to the new designs and possibilities towards better performance. The purpose of this review is by no means to give a complete overview of all important works in this fast developing field, but to draw a rough sketch about the frontiers and show the fascinating future lying ahead.

Tunable spin-orbit coupling synthesized with a modulating gradient magnetic field

We report the observation of tunable spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for ultracold $^{87}$Rb atoms in hyperfine spin-1 states. Different from most earlier experiments where atomic SOC of pseudo-spin-1/2 are synthesized with Raman coupling lasers, the scheme we demonstrate employs a gradient magnetic field (GMF) with ground state atoms and is immune to atomic spontaneous emission. The effect of the SOC is confirmed through the studies of: 1) the collective dipole oscillation of an atomic condensate in a harmonic trap after the synthesized SOC is abruptly turned on; and 2) the minimum energy state at a finite adiabatically adjusted momentum when the SOC strength is slowly ramped up. The coherence properties of the spinor condensates remain very good after interacting with modulating GMFs, which prompts the enthusiastic claim that our work provides a new repertoire for synthesized gauge fields aimed at quantum simulation studies with cold atoms.

Impact of photo-assisted collisions on superradiant light scattering with Bose condensates

We present experimental evidence supporting the postulation that the secondary effects of light-assisted collisions are the main reason that the superradiant light scattering efficiency in condensates is asymmetric with respect to the sign of the pump-laser detuning. Contrary to the recent experimental study, however, we observe severe and comparable heating with all three pump-laser polarizations. We also perform two-color, double-pulse measurements to directly study the degradation of condensate coherence and the resulting impact on the superradiant scattering efficiency.

Evidence of an Internally Generated Optical-Dipole Potential in Matter-Wave Superradiance

We present the first experimental evidence supporting the postulation that an optical-dipole potential in a condensate undergoing superradiant scattering modifies the structure factor of the system and significantly impacts the scattering. Several consequences of this new detuning-dependent mechanism are discussed and verified experimentally. Our experiments indicate that whenever the generation and propagation growth of a new field are significant, the dynamic response of the condensate can have a profound impact on the scattering process.
