Variation of the one-dimensional centered maximal operator on simple functions with gaps between pieces

Let $M$ denote the centered Hardy--Littlewood operator on $\mathbb{R}$. We prove that \[ {\rm Var} (Mf)\le {\rm Var} (f) - \frac12\big| |f(\infty)|-|f(-\infty)|\big| \] for piecewise constant functions $f$ with nonzero and zero values alternating. The above inequality strengthens a recent result of Bilz and Weigt \cite{BW} proved for indicator functions of bounded variation vanishing at $\pm\infty$. We conjecture that the inequality holds for all functions of bounded variation, representing a stronger version of the existing conjecture ${\rm Var} (Mf)\le {\rm Var} (f)$. We also obtain the discrete counterpart of our theorem, moreover proving a transference result on equivalency between both settings that is of independent interest.

Finite reflection groups and symmetric extensions of Laplacian

Let $W$ be a finite reflection group associated with a root system $R$ in $\mathbb R^d$. Let $C_+$ denote a positive Weyl chamber. Consider an open subset $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^d$, symmetric with respect to reflections from $W$. Let $Ω_+=Ω\cap C_+$ be the positive part of $Ω$. We define a family $\{-Δ_η^+\}$ of self-adjoint extensions of the Laplacian $-Δ_{Ω_+}$, labeled by homomorphisms $η\colon W\to \{1,-1\}$. In the construction of these $η$-Laplacians $η$-symmetrization of functions on $Ω$ is involved. The Neumann Laplacian $-Δ_{N,Ω_+}$ is included and corresponds to $η\equiv1$. If $H^{1}(Ω)=H^{1}_0(Ω)$, then the Dirichlet Laplacian $-Δ_{D,Ω_+}$ is either included and corresponds to $η={\rm sgn}$; otherwise the Dirichlet Laplacian is considered separately. Applying the spectral functional calculus we consider the pairs of operators $Ψ(-Δ_{N,Ω})$ and $Ψ(-Δ_η^+)$, or $Ψ(-Δ_{D,Ω})$ and $Ψ(-Δ_{D,Ω_+})$, where $Ψ$ is a Borel function on $[0,\infty)$. We prove relations between the integral kernels for the operators in these pairs, which are given in terms of symmetries governed by $W$.

Sharp estimates for potential operators associated with Laguerre and Dunkl-Laguerre expansions

We study potential operators associated with Laguerre function expansions of convolution and Hermite types, and with Dunkl-Laguerre expansions. We prove qualitatively sharp estimates of the corresponding potential kernels. Then we characterize those $1 \le p,q \le \infty$, for which the potential operators are $L^p-L^q$ bounded. These results are sharp analogues of the classical Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev fractional integration theorem in the Laguerre and Dunkl-Laguerre settings.

A symmetrized conjugacy scheme for orthogonal expansions

We establish a symmetrization procedure in a context of general orthogonal expansions associated with a second order differential operator $L$, a `Laplacian'. Combined with a unified conjugacy scheme furnished in our earlier article it allows, via a suitable embedding, to associate a differential-difference `Laplacian' $\mathbb{L}$ with the initially given orthogonal system of eigenfunctions of $L$, so that the resulting extended conjugacy scheme has the natural classical shape. This means, in particular, that the related `partial derivatives' decomposing $\mathbb{L}$ are skew-symmetric in an appropriate $L^2$ space and they commute with Riesz transforms and conjugate Poisson integrals. The results shed also some new light on the question of defining higher order Riesz transforms for general orthogonal expansions.

On weighted transplantation and multipliers for Laguerre expansions

Using the standard square--function method (based on the Poisson semigroup), multiplier conditions of Hörmander type are derived for Laguerre expansions in $L^p$--spaces with power weights in the $A_p$-range; this result can be interpreted as an ``upper end point'' multiplier criterion which is fairly good for $p$ near $1$ or near $\infty $. A weighted generalization of Kanjin's \cite{kan} transplantation theorem allows to obtain a ``lower end point'' multiplier criterion whence by interpolation nearly ``optimal'' multiplier criteria (in dependance of $p$, the order of the Laguerre polynomial, the weight).
