Bounded negativity and Harbourne constants on ruled surfaces

Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface and let $\mathcal{C}$ be an arrangement of curves on $X$. The Harbourne constant of $\mathcal{C}$ was defined as a way to investigate the occurrence of curves of negative self-intersection on blow ups of $X$. This is related to the bounded negativity conjecture which predicts that the self-intersection number of all reduced curves on a surface is bounded below by a constant. We consider a geometrically ruled surface $X$ over a smooth curve and give lower bounds for the Harbourne constants of transversal arrangements of curves on $X$.

Negative curves on special rational surfaces

We study negative curves on surfaces obtained by blowing up special configurations of points in the complex projective palne. Our main results concern the following configurations: very general points on a cubic, 3-torsion points on an elliptic curve and nine Fermat points. As a consequence of our analysis, we also show that the Bounded Negativity Conjecture holds for the surfaces we consider. The note contains also some problems for future attention.

Positivity of vector bundles on homogeneous varieties

We study the following question: Given a vector bundle on a projective variety $X$ such that the restriction of $E$ to every closed curve $C \,\subset\, X$ is ample, under what conditions $E$ is ample? We first consider the case of an abelian variety $X$. If $E$ is a line bundle on $X$, then we answer the question in the affirmative. When $E$ is of higher rank, we show that the answer is affirmative under some conditions on $E$. We then study the case of $X \,=\, G/P$, where $G$ is a reductive complex affine algebraic group, and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$. In this case, we show that the answer to our question is affirmative if $E$ is $T$--equivariant, where $T\, \subset\, P$ is a fixed maximal torus. Finally, we compute the Seshadri constant for such vector bundles defined on $G/P$.

Rationality of Seshadri constants on general blow ups of $\mathbb{P}^2$

Let $X$ be a projective surface and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. The global Seshadri constant $\varepsilon(L)$ of $L$ is defined as the infimum of Seshadri constants $\varepsilon(L,x)$ as $x\in X$ varies. It is an interesting question to ask if $\varepsilon(L)$ is a rational number for any pair $(X, L)$. We study this question when $X$ is a blow up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at $r \ge 0$ very general points and $L$ is an ample line bundle on $X$. For each $r$ we define a $\textit{submaximality threshold}$ which governs the rationality or irrationality of $\varepsilon(L)$. We state a conjecture which strengthens the SHGH Conjecture and assuming that this conjecture is true we determine the submaximality threshold.

Syzygies of Line Bundles on GIT Quotients

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. Consider a reductive group $G$ over $k$. Let $X$ be a projective variety over $k$ with a $G$-action and let $L$ be a very ample $G$-linearized line bundle on $X$. Suppose that $L$ descends to the GIT quotient of $X$ by $G$. If $L$ satisfies the property $N_p$ one can ask if its descent also has $N_p$ property. In this article, we show this is the case under certain conditions. We then apply our results to some cases of interest. As a consequence of our results, we show that if $G$ is a finite group and $L$ satisfies $N_p$ property and its descent satisfies $N_0$ property then it satisfies $N_p$ property as well under suitable conditions.

Syzygies of some GIT quotients

Let $X$ be flat scheme over $\mathbb{Z}$ such that its base change, $X_p$, to $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ is Frobenius split for all primes $p$. Let $G$ be a reductive group scheme over $\mathbb{Z}$ acting on $X$. In this paper, we prove a result on the $N_p$ property for line bundles on GIT quotients of $X_{\mathbb{C}}$ for the action of $G_{\mathbb{C}}$. We apply our result to the special cases of (1) an action of a finite group on the projective space and (2) the action of a maximal torus on the flag variety of type $A_n$.

Syzygies of surfaces of general type

We prove new results on projective normality, normal presentation and higher syzygies for a surface of general type $X$ embedded by adjoint line bundles $L_r = K + rB$, where $B$ is a base point free, ample line bundle. Our main results determine the $r$ for which $L_r$ has $N_p$ property. In corollaries, we will relate the bounds on $r$ to the regularity of $B$. Examples in the last section show that several results are optimal.
