Gauge invariant input to neural network for path optimization method

We investigate the efficiency of a gauge invariant input to a neural network for the path optimization method. While the path optimization with a completely gauge-fixed link-variable input has successfully tamed the sign problem in a simple gauge theory, the optimization does not work well when the gauge degrees of freedom remain. We propose to employ a gauge invariant input, such as plaquette, to overcome this problem. The efficiency of the gauge invariant input to the neural network is evaluated for the 2-dimensional $U(1)$ gauge theory with a complex coupling. The average phase factor is significantly enhanced by the path optimization with the plaquette input, indicating good control of the sign problem. It opens a possibility that the path optimization is available to complicated gauge theories, including Quantum Chromodynamics, in a realistic setup.

Multiplicity, probabilities, and canonical sectors for the cold QCD matter

At sufficiently low temperature, without requiring any numerical data at finite real chemical potential, we can clarify the canonical partition function with fixed quark number via the imaginary chemical potential region with few ansatzs. The canonical partition function relates to the multiplicity distribution which can be observed in collider experiments and thus we may access important information of the properties of the QCD matter based on the canonical method. In this paper, we estimate the multiplicity entropy, the configuration entropy, and the pointwise information which can be calculable with the canonical partition function to understand the properties of the cold QCD matter at finite density. With the large $N_\mathrm{c}$ limit where $N_\mathrm{c}$ is the number of colors, we can simply estimate the tendency of them, and then the relation to the quarkyonic phase is clarified. In addition, we discuss the nontrivial ground state degeneracy from the viewpoint of the canonical sectors.

Persistent homology analysis for dense QCD effective model with heavy quarks

The isospin chemical potential region is known as the sign-problem free region of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this paper, we introduce the isospin chemical potential to the three-dimensional three-state Potts model to mimic the dense QCD; e.g., the QCD effective model with heavy quarks at finite density. We call it as QCD-like Potts model. The QCD-like Potts model does not have the sign problem, but we can expect that it shares some properties with QCD. Since we can obtain the non-approximated Potts spin configuration at finite isospin chemical potential where the simple Metropolis algorithm can work, we perform the persistent homology analysis towards exploring the dense spatial structure of QCD. We show that the averaged birth-death ratio has the same information with the Polyakov loop, but the maximum birth-death ratio has additional information near the phase transition.

Extension to Imaginary Chemical Potential in a Holographic Model

We extend a bottom up holographic model, which has been used in studying the color superconductivity in QCD, to the imaginary chemical potential ($μ_I$) region, and the phase diagram is studied on the $μ_I$-temperature (T) plane. The analysis is performed for the case of the probe approximation and for the background where the back reaction from the flavor fermions are taken into account. For both cases, we could find the expected Roberge-Weiss (RW) transitions. In the case of the back-reacted solution, a bound of the color number $N_c$ is found to produce the RW periodicity. It is given as $N_c\geq 1.2$. Furthermore, we could assure the validity of this extended model by comparing our result with the one of the lattice QCD near $μ_I=0$.

Information theoretical view of QCD effective model with heavy quarks

To understand the phase transition phenomena, information theoretical approaches can pick up some important properties of the phenomena based on the probability distribution. In this paper, we show information theoretical aspects of the 3-dimensional 3-state Potts model with the external field which is corresponding to the QCD effective model with heavy quarks. The transfer mutual information which represents the information flow of two spin variables is numerically estimated based on the Markov-chain Monte-Carlo method. The transfer mutual information has the peak near the confinement-deconfinement transition, and it may be used to detect the precursors of the transition. Since the transfer mutual information still have the peak even if the Polyakov-loop changes continuously and smoothly, we may pick up some aspects of the confinement-deconfinement nature from the information flow properties. Particularly, the transfer mutual information shows the significantly different behavior below and above the Roberge-Weiss endpoint existed in the pure imaginary chemical potential region, which may indicate the system change by the confinement-deconfinement transition.

Persistent homology analysis of deconfinement transition in effective Polyakov-line model

The persistent homology analysis is applied to the effective Polyakov-line model on a rectangular lattice to investigate the confinement-deconfinement nature. The lattice data are mapped onto the complex Polyakov-line plane without taking the spatial average and then the plane is divided into three domains. This study is based on previous studies for the clusters and the percolation properties in lattice QCD, but the mathematical method of the analyses are different. The spatial distribution of the data in the individual domain is analyzed by using the persistent homology to obtain information of the multiscale structure of center clusters. In the confined phase, the data in the three domains show the same topological tendency characterized by the birth and death times of the holes which are estimated via the filtration of the alpha complexes in the data space, but do not in the deconfined phase. By considering the configuration averaged ratio of the birth and death times of holes, we can construct the nonlocal order-parameter of the confinement-deconfinement transition from the multiscale topological properties of center clusters.

Implications of imaginary chemical potential for model building of QCD

Properties of QCD at finite imaginary chemical potential are revisited to utilize for the model building of QCD in low energy regimes. For example, the electric holonomy which is closely related to the Polyakov-loop drastically affects thermodynamic quantities beside the Roberge-Weiss transition line. To incorporate several properties at finite imaginary chemical potential, it is important to introduce the holonomy effects to the coupling constant of effective models. This extension is possible by considering the entanglement vertex. We show justifications of the entanglement vertex based on the derivation of the effective four-fermi interaction in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and present its general form with the local approximation. To discuss how to remove model ambiguities in the entanglement vertex, we calculate the chiral condensate with different $\mathbb{Z}_3$ sectors and the dual quark condensate.

Quark number holonomy and confinement-deconfinement transition

We propose a new quantity which describes the confinement-deconfinement transition based on topological properties of QCD. The quantity which we call the quark number holonomy is defined as the integral of the quark number susceptibility along the closed loop of $θ$ where $θ$ is the dimensionless imaginary chemical potential. Expected behavior of the quark number holonomy at finite temperature is discussed and its asymptotic behaviors are shown.

Test for a universal behavior of Dirac eigenvalues in the complex Langevin method

We apply the complex Langevin (CL) method to a chiral random matrix theory (ChRMT) at non-zero chemical potential and study the nearest neighbor spacing (NNS) distribution of the Dirac eigenvalues. The NNS distribution is extracted using an unfolding procedure for the Dirac eigenvalues obtained in the CL method. For large quark mass, we find that the NNS distribution obeys the Ginibre ensemble as expected. For small quark mass, the NNS distribution follows the Wigner surmise for correct convergence case, while it follows the Ginibre ensemble for wrong convergence case. The Wigner surmise is physically reasonable from the chemical potential independence of the ChRMT. The Ginibre ensemble is known to be favored in a phase quenched QCD at finite chemical potential. Our result suggests a possibility that the originally universal behavior of the NNS distribution is preserved even in the CL method for correct convergence case.

Three Baryon Interaction Generated by Determinant Interaction of Quarks

We discuss the three-baryon interaction generated by the determinant interaction of quarks, known as the Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft (KMT) interaction. The expectation value of the KMT interaction operator is calculated in fully-antisymmetrized quark-cluster model wave functions for one-, two- and three-octet baryon states. The three-baryon potential from the KMT interaction is found to be repulsive for $NNΛ$ and $NΛΛ$ systems, while it is zero for the $NNN$ system. The strength and range of the three-baryon potential are found to be comparable to those for the $NNN$ three-body potential obtained in lattice QCD simulations. The contribution to the $Λ$ single particle potential in nuclear matter is found to be 0.28 MeV and 0.73 MeV in neutron matter and symmetric nuclear matter at normal nuclear density, respectively. These repulsive forces are not enough to solve the hyperon puzzle, but may be measured in high-precision hyperisotope experiments.

Evading the sign problem in the mean-field approximation through Lefschetz-thimble path integral

The fermion sign problem appearing in the mean-field approximation is considered, and the systematic computational scheme of the free energy is devised by using the Lefschetz-thimble method. We show that the Lefschetz-thimble method respects the reflection symmetry, which makes physical quantities manifestly real at any order of approximations using complex saddle points. The formula is demonstrated through the Airy integral as an example, and its application to the Polyakov-loop effective model of dense QCD is discussed in detail.

Inhomogeneous chiral condensates and non-analyticity under an external magnetic field

We investigate inhomogeneous chiral condensates, such as the so-called dual chiral density wave of dense quark matter, under an external magnetic field at finite real and imaginary chemical potentials. In a model-independent manner, we find that analytic continuation from imaginary to real chemical potential is not possible due to the singularity induced by inhomogeneous chiral condensates at zero chemical potential. From the discussion on the non-analyticity and methods used in lattice QCD simulations, e.g., Taylor expansion, and the analytic continuation with an imaginary chemical potential, it turns out that information on an inhomogeneous chiral condensed phase is missed in the lattice simulations at finite baryon chemical potentials unless the non-analyticity at zero chemical potential is correctly considered. We also discuss an exceptional case without such non-analyticity at zero chemical potential.

Lee-Yang zero distribution of high temperature QCD and Roberge-Weiss phase transition

Canonical partition functions and Lee-Yang zeros of QCD at finite density and high temperature are studied. Recent lattice simulations have confirmed that the free energy of QCD is a quartic function of quark chemical potential at temperature slightly above pseudo-critical temperature $T_c$, as in the case with a gas of free massless fermions. We present analytic derivation of the canonical partition functions and Lee-Yang zeros for this type of free energy using the saddle point approximation. We also perform lattice QCD simulation in a canonical approach using the fugacity expansion of the fermion determinant, and carefully examine its reliability. By comparing the analytic and numerical results, we conclude that the canonical partition functions follow the Gaussian distribution of the baryon number, and the accumulation of Lee-Yang zeros of these canonical partition functions exhibit the first-order Roberge-Weiss phase transition. We discuss the validity and applicable range of the result and its implications both for theoretical and experimental studies.

Phase structure of two-color QCD at real and imaginary chemical potentials; lattice simulations and model analyses

We investigate the phase structure of two-color QCD at both real and imaginary chemical potentials mu, performing lattice simulations and analyzing the data with the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. Lattice QCD simulations are done on an 8^3 times 4 lattice with the clover-improved two-flavor Wilson fermion action and the renormalization-group improved Iwasaki gauge action. We test the analytic continuation of physical quantities from imaginary mu to real mu by comparing lattice QCD results calculated at real mu with the result of analytic function the coefficients of which are determined from lattice QCD results at imaginary mu. We also test the validity of the PNJL model by comparing model results with lattice QCD ones. The PNJL model is good in the deconfinement region, but less accurate in the transition and confinement regions. This problem is improved by introducing the baryon degree of freedom to the model. It is also found that the vector-type four-quark interaction is necessary to explain lattice data on the quark number density.

Temperature dependence of meson screening masses; a comparison of effective model with lattice QCD

Temperature dependence of pion and sigma-meson screening masses is evaluated by the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the entanglement vertex (EPNJL model). We propose a practical way of calculating meson screening masses in the NJL-type effective models. The method based on the Pauli-Villars regularization solves the well-known difficulty that the evaluation of screening masses is not easy in the NJL-type effective models. The method is applied to analyze temperature dependence of pion screening masses calculated with state-of-the-art lattice simulations with success in reproducing the lattice QCD results. We predict the temperature dependence of pole mass by using EPNJL model.

Topological feature and phase structure of QCD at complex chemical potential

The pseudo-critical temperature of the confinement-deconfinement transition and the phase transition surface are investigated by using the complex chemical potential. We can interpret the imaginary chemical potential as the Aharonov-Bohm phase, then the analogy of the topological order suggests that the Roberge-Weiss endpoint would define the pseudo-critical temperature. The behavior of the Roberge-Weiss endpoint at small real quark chemical potential is investigated with the perturbative expansion. The expected QCD phase diagram at complex chemical potential is presented.

Understanding of QCD at high density from Z3-symmetric QCD-like theory

We investigate QCD at large mu/T by using Z_3-symmetric SU(3) gauge theory, where mu is the quark-number chemical potential and T is temperature. We impose the flavor-dependent twist boundary condition on quarks in QCD. This QCD-like theory has the twist angle theta as a parameter, and agrees with QCD when theta=0 and becomes symmetric when theta=2π/3. For both QCD and the Z_3-symmetric SU(3) gauge theory, the phase diagram is drawn in mu--T plane with the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. In the Z_3-symmetric SU(3) gauge theory, the Polyakov loop varphi is zero in the confined phase appearing at T \lsim 200 MeV. The perfectly confined phase never coexists with the color superconducting (CSC) phase, since finite diquark condensate in the CSC phase breaks Z_3 symmetry and then makes varphi finite. When mu \gsim 300 MeV, the CSC phase is more stable than the perfectly confined phase at T \lsim 100 MeV. Meanwhile, the chiral symmetry can be broken in the perfectly confined phase, since the chiral condensate is Z_3 invariant. Consequently, the perfectly confined phase is divided into the perfectly confined phase without chiral symmetry restoration in a region of mu \lsim 300 MeV and T \lsim 200 MeV and the perfectly confined phase with chiral symmetry restoration in a region of μ\gsim 300 MeV and 100 \lsim T \lsim 200 MeV. The basic phase structure of Z_3-symmetric QCD-like theory remains in QCD. We show that in the perfectly confined phase the sign problem becomes less serious because of φ=0, using the heavy quark theory. We discuss a lattice QCD framework to evaluate observables at θ=0 from those at θ=2π/3.

We propose a practical way of calculating meson screening masses in the NJL-type effective models. The method based on the Pauli-Villars regularization solves the well-known difficulty that the evaluaton of screening masses is not easy in the NJL-type effective models. The PNJL model with the entanglement vertex and the Pauli-Villars regularization well reproduces lattice QCD results on temperature dependence of the chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop. The method is applied to analyze temperature dependence of pion screening mass calculated with state-of-the-art lattice simulations with success in reproducing the lattice QCD results.

Phase structure of $SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification models at finite temperature

Five-dimensional $SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification models are studied at finite temperature in the warped extra dimension $S^1/\mathbb{Z}_2$. In order to investigate the phase structure, we developed a technique to compute the one-loop effective potential with the nontrivial Polyakov loop phase and with the nontrivial Wilson line phase along the extra dimension. Effective potentials as functions of two gauge-field condensations are shown for several simple matter contents, including fundamental, sextet, and adjoint representational Dirac fermions. Possible extensions and applications of our formalism are also briefly discussed.

Phase structure of pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory in 5 dimensions

We investigate the nonperturbative phase structure of five-dimensional SU(3) pure Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. We perform numerical simulations using the Wilson plaquette gauge action on an anisotropic lattice with a four-dimensional lattice spacing (a4) and with an independent value in the fifth dimension (a5). We investigate both cases of a4 > a5 and a4 < a5. The Polyakov loops in the fourth and the fifth directions are observed, and we find that there are four possible phases for the anisotropic five-dimensional quenched QCD theory on the lattice. We determine the critical values of the lattice bare coupling and the anisotropy parameter for each phase transition. Furthermore, we find that the two center domains where the Polyakov loop have locally different charges of the center symmetry appears in single configuration in the specific region of the lattice parameters.

Differences and similarities between fundamental and adjoint matters in SU(N) gauge theories

We investigate differences and similarities between fundamental fermions and adjoint fermions in SU(N) gauge theories. The gauge theory with fundamental fermions possesses ZN symmetry only in the limit of infinite fermion mass, whereas the gauge theory with adjoint fermions does have the symmetry for any fermion mass. The flavor-dependent twisted boundary condition (FTBC) is then imposed on fundamental fermions so that the theory with fundamental fermions can possess ZN symmetry for any fermion mass. We show similarities between FTBC fundamental fermions and adjoint fermions, using the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. In the mean-field level, the PNJL model with FTBC fundamental fermions has dynamics similar to the PNJL model with adjoint fermions for the confinement/deconfinement transition related to ZN symmetry. The chiral property is somewhat different between the two models, but there is a simple relation between chiral condensates in the two models. As an interesting high-energy phenomenon, a possibility of the gauge symmetry breaking is studied for FTBC fundamental fermions.

Phase structure and Hosotani mechanism in gauge theories with compact dimensions revisited

We investigate the phase structure of SU(3) gauge theory in four and five dimensions with one compact dimension by using perturbative one-loop and PNJL-model-based effective potentials, with emphasis on spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking. When adjoint matter with the periodic boundary condition is introduced, we have rich phase structure in the quark-mass and compact-size space with gauge-symmetry-broken phases, called the $SU(2)\times U(1)$ split and the $U(1)\times U(1)$ re-confined phases. Our result is qualitatively consistent with the recent lattice calculations. When fundamental quarks are introduced in addition to adjoint quarks, the split phase becomes more dominant and larger as a result of explicit center symmetry breaking. We also show that another $U(1)\times U(1)$ phase (pseudo-reconfined phase) with negative vacuum expectation value of Polyakov loop exists in this case. We study chiral properties in these theories and show that chiral condensate gradually decreases and chiral symmetry is slowly restored as the size of the compact dimension is decreased.

Phase structure and Hosotani mechanism in QCD-like theory with compact dimensions

We investigated the phase diagram of $SU(3)$ gauge theory in four dimension with one compact dimension by using the perturbative one-loop effective potential. Effects of the adjoint and fundamental fermions are investigated and then the rich phase structure in the quark-mass and compact-size scale is realized. Our results are qualitatively consistent with the recent lattice calculation and clearly show that the lattice calculation can be understood from the Hosotani mechanism. Moreover, we show the result obtained by using the flavor twisted boundary condition for fundamental fermion which does not break the $Z_3$ symmetry, explicitly.

Polyakov loop and QCD thermodynamics from the gluon and ghost propagators

We investigate quark deconfinement by calculating the effective potential of the Polyakov loop using the non-perturbative propagators in the Landau gauge measured in the finite-temperature lattice simulation. With the leading term in the 2-particle-irreducible formalism the resultant effective potential exhibits a first-order phase transitions for the pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory at the critical temperature consistent with the empirical value. We also estimate the thermodynamic quantities to confirm qualitative agreement with the lattice data near the critical temperature. We then apply our effective potential to the chiral model study and calculate the order parameters and the thermodynamic quantities. Unlike the case in the pure Yang-Mills theory the thermodynamic quantities are sensitive to the temperature dependence of the non-perturbative propagators, while the behavior of the order parameters is less sensitive, which implies the importance of the precise determination of the temperature-dependent propagators.

Quark contribution for center domain in heavy ion collisions

The center domain structure is revisited with introduction of quark contribution to understand phenomenology in high-energy heavy ion collisions. We show the quark contribution may allow metastable states that would lead to a natural and consistent explanation for the temperature dependences of color opacity and viscosity. We also argue the possibility of indirect observations of the center domain structure in experiments due to a topological critical temperature.

Quasi-particle and matrix models of the semi Quark Gluon Plasma

We make a simple observation about two models used to treat the region near the critical temperature of QCD, quasiparticle and matrix models. While they appear very different, we show how these two models might be related. We also present results for the temperature dependence of the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy in a matrix model, and suggest that quasi-particle models may behave similarly.

The Roberge-Weiss transition and 't Hooft loops

Roberge and Weiss showed that for SU(N) gauge theories, phase transitions occur in the presence of an imaginary quark chemical potential. We show that at asymptotically high temperature, where the phase transition is of first order, that even with dynamical quarks 't Hooft loops of arbitrary Z(N) charge are well defined at the phase boundary. To leading order in weak coupling, the 't Hooft loop satisfies Casimir scaling in the pure glue theory, but not with quarks. Because the chemical potential is imaginary, typically the interaction measure is negative on one side of the phase transition. Using a matrix model to model the deconfining phase transition, we compute the phase diagram for heavy quarks, in the plane of temperature and imaginary chemical potential. In general we find intersecting lines of first order transitions. Using a modified Polyakov loop which is Roberge-Weiss symmetric, we suggest that the interface tension is related to the 't Hooft loop only at high temperature, where the imaginary part of this Polyakov loop, and not the real part, is discontinuous across the phase boundary.

Two-color QCD at imaginary chemical potential and its impact on real chemical potential

We study properties of two-color QCD at imaginary chemical potential ($μ$) from the viewpoint of the Roberge-Weiss (RW) periodicity, the charge conjugation and the pseudo-reality. At $μ=\pm iπT/2$, where $T$ is temperature, the system is symmetric under the combination of the charge conjugation ${\cal C}$ and the ${\mathbb Z}_{2}$ transformation. The symmetry, called ${\cal C} {\mathbb Z}_{2}$ symmetry, is preserved at lower $T$ but broken at higher $T$. The Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model has the same properties as two-color QCD for ${\cal C} {\mathbb Z}_{2}$ symmetry and the pseudo-reality. The nontrivial correlation between the chiral restoration and the deconfinement are investigated by introducing the entanglement vertex in the PNJL model. The order of ${\cal C} {\mathbb Z}_{2}$ symmetry breaking at the RW endpoint is second-order when the correlation is weak, but becomes first-order when the correlation is strong. We also investigate the impact of the correlation on the phase diagram at real $μ$.

Critical endpoint for deconfinement in matrix and other effective models

We consider the position of the deconfining critical endpoint, where the first order transition for deconfinement is washed out by the presence of massive, dynamical quarks. We use an effective matrix model, employed previously to analyze the transition in the pure glue theory. If the param- eters of the pure glue theory are unaffected by the presence of dynamical quarks, and if the quarks only contribute perturbatively, then for three colors and three degenerate quark flavors this quark mass is very heavy, m_de \sim 2.5 GeV, while the critical temperature, T_de, barely changes, \sim 1% below that in the pure glue theory. The location of the deconfining critical endpoint is a sensitive test to differentiate between effective models. For example, models with a logarithmic potential for the Polyakov loop give much smaller values of the quark mass, m_de \sim 1 GeV, and a large shift in T_de \sim 10% lower than that in the pure glue theory.

Impact of vector-current interactions on the QCD phase diagram

Using a nonlocal version of the Polyakov-loop-extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, we investi- gate effects of a nonderivative vector-current interaction (relating to the quark-number density) at both real and imaginary chemical potentials. This repulsive vector interaction between quarks has the following impact on the chiral first-order phase transition: at imaginary chemical potential it sharpens the transition at the Roberge-Weiss (RW) end point and moves this critical point toward lower temperatures; at real chemical potential, the critical end point moves on a trajectory towards larger chemical potentials and lower temperatures with increasing vector coupling strength. The conditions are discussed at which the first-order phase transition disappears and turns into a smooth crossover.

Quark back reaction to deconfinement transition via gluon propagators

Contribution of the quark back reaction to the deconfinement phase transition is studied in the thermodynamical potential of the gluonic sector which consists of the gluon and ghost propagators calculated in the lattice QCD simulations. Starting from QCD thermodynamic potential, we define the gluonic potential in the leading-order of the 2PI formalism, which can describe the deconfinement phase transition. Then the gluonic potential can be written by using the microscopic characters; the gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge fixing. To include effects of the quark back reaction, we calculate the gluon propagators in lattice QCD simulations with two-flavored dynamical quarks. Fitting the lattice data by the Gribov-Stingl form and investigating the phase transition of the gluonic potential, we find that enhancement of the quark back reaction reduces the critical temperature of the deconfinement phase transition.

Entanglement between chiral and deconfinement transitions under strong uniform magnetic background field

Effects of a uniform (electro-) magnetic background field are investigated in the two-flavor nonlocal Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. Temperature-dependences of the chiral order-parameter and the Polyakov-loop are investigated under the magnetic field. In the nonlocal PNJL model with four-dimensional momentum dependent distribution function, pseudo-critical temperatures of the chiral and deconfinement transitions are coincident each other even if the magnetic field is strong. It means that we can check the reliability of the distribution function under the strong magnetic field by comparing with lattice QCD data, particularly from the viewpoint of the entanglement between the chiral and deconfinement transitions.

The nonlocal Polyakov-loop-extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model is further improved by including momentum-dependent wave-function renormalization in the quark quasiparticle propagator. Both two- and three-flavor versions of this improved PNJL model are discussed, the latter with inclusion of the (nonlocal) 't Hooft-Kobayashi-Maskawa determinant interaction in order to account for the axial U(1) anomaly. Nonlocal Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and imaginary chemical potential

With the aim of setting constraints for the modeling of the QCD phase diagram, the phase structure of the two-flavor Polyakov-loop extended Nambu and Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model is investigated in the range of imaginary chemical potentials ($μ_\mathrm{I}$) and compared with available $N_f=2$ lattice QCD results. The calculations are performed using the advanced nonlocal version of the PNJL model with the inclusion of vector-type quasiparticle interactions between quarks, and with wave-function-renormalization corrections. It is demonstrated that the nonlocal PNJL model reproduces important features of QCD at finite $μ_\mathrm{I}$, such as the Roberge-Weiss (RW) periodicity and the RW transition. Chiral and deconfinement transition temperatures for $N_f=2$ turn out to coincide both at zero chemical potential and at finite $μ_\mathrm{I}$. Detailed studies are performed concerning the RW endpoint and its neighborhood where a first-order transition occurs.

Violations of parity and charge conjugation in the theta vacuum with imaginary chemical potential

Charge conjugation (C) and Parity (P) are exact symmetries at theta =pi and Theta = mu/(iT)=pi, where theta is the parameter of the so-called theta-vacuum, mu is the imaginary quark-number chemical potential and T is the temperature. Spontaneous breakings of these discrete symmetries are investigated by the the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. At zero T, P symmetry is spontaneously broken while C symmetry is conserved. As T increases, P symmetry is restored just after C symmetry is spontaneously broken, so that either P or C symmetry or both the symmetries are spontaneously broken for any T. The chiral-symmetry restoration and the deconfinement transition at theta =Theta =0 are remnants of the P restoration and the C breaking at theta =Theta =pi, respectively.

C and P violations in the PNJL model

Using the PNJL model, we investigate C and P violations when theta =pi and Theta =mu/(iT)=π/3, where T, theta and mu are the temperature, the parameter of theta-vacuum and the quark number chemical potential, respectively. It is shown that the C violation and the P restoration happen almost simultaneously at theta=pi and Theta =pi/3, if the deconfinement and the chiral symmetry restoration happen almost simultaneously at theta =Theta =0.

Investigation of meson masses for real and imaginary chemical potential

We investigate chemical-potential ($μ$) and temperature ($T$) dependence of scalar and pseudo-scalar meson masses for both real and imaginary $μ$, using the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model with three-flavor quarks. A three-flavor phase diagram is drawn in $μ^2$-$T$ plane where positive (negative) $μ^2$ corresponds to positive (imaginary) $μ$. A critical surface is plotted as a function of light- and strange-quark current mass and $μ^2$. We show that $μ$-dependence of the six-quark Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft (KMT) determinant interaction originated in $U_\mathrm{A}(1)$ anomaly can be determined from lattice QCD data on $η'$ meson mass around $μ=0$ and $μ= i πT/3$ with $T$ slightly above the critical temperature at $μ=0$ where the chiral symmetry is restored at $μ=0$ but broken at $μ=i πT/3$, if it is measured in future.

Roberge-Weiss phase transition and its endpoint

The Roberge-Weiss (RW) phase transition in the imaginary chemical potential region is analyzed by the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. In the RW phase transition, the charge-conjugation symmetry is spontaneously broken, while the extended Z3 symmetry (the RW periodicity) is preserved. The RW transition is of second order at the endpoint. At the zero chemical potential, a crossover deconfinement transition appears as a remnant of the second-order RW phase transition at the endpoint, while the charge-conjugation symmetry is always preserved.

Dual quark condensate in the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

The dual quark condensate $Σ^{(n)}$ proposed recently as a new order parameter of the spontaneous breaking of the ${\mathbb Z}_3$ symmetry are evaluated by the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, where $n$ are winding numbers. The Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model well reproduces lattice QCD data on $Σ^{(1)}$ measured very lately. The dual quark condensate $Σ^{(n)}$ at higher temperatures is sensitive to the strength of the vector-type four-quark interaction in the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and hence a good quantity to determine the strength.

Meson mass at real and imaginary chemical potentials

The chemical-potential dependence of pi and sigma meson masses is analyzed at both real and imaginary chemical potentials, $μ_\mathrm{R}$ and $μ_\mathrm{I}$, by using the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model that possesses both the extended ${\mathbb Z}_3$ symmetry and the chiral symmetry. In the $μ_\mathrm{I}$ region, the meson masses have the Roberge-Weiss periodicity. Assuming that the meson masses will be measured at finite $μ_\mathrm{I}$ by lattice QCD in future, we simulate how meson masses at finite $μ_\mathrm{R}$ are extracted from those at finite $μ_\mathrm{I}$, and propose a reliable extraction method.
