Singularity of sparse Bernoulli matrices

Let MnM_n be an n×nn\times n random matrix with i.i.d. Bernoulli(p) entries. We show that there is a universal constant C≥1C\geq 1 such that, whenever pp and nn satisfy Clog⁡n/n≤p≤C−1C\log n/n\leq p\leq C^{-1}, \begin{align*} {\mathbb P}\big\{\mbox{MnM_n is singular}\big\}&=(1+o_n(1)){\mathbb P}\big\{\mbox{MnM_n contains a zero row or column}\big\}\\ &=(2+o_n(1))n\,(1-p)^n, \end{align*} where on(1)o_n(1) denotes a quantity which converges to zero as n→∞n\to\infty. We provide the corresponding upper and lower bounds on the smallest singular value of MnM_n as well.

The smallest singular value of random rectangular matrices with no moment assumptions on entries

Let δ>1δ>1 and β>0β>0 be some real numbers. We prove that there are positive u,v,N0u,v,N_0 depending only on ββ and δδ with the following property: for any N,nN,n such that N≥max⁡(N0,δn)N\ge \max(N_0,δn), any N×nN\times n random matrix A=(aij)A=(a_{ij}) with i.i.d. entries satisfying sup⁡λ∈RP{∣a11−λ∣≤1}≤1−β\sup\limits_{λ\in {\mathbb R}}{\mathbb P}\bigl\{|a_{11}-λ|\le 1\bigr\}\le 1-β and any non-random N×nN\times n matrix BB, the smallest singular value sns_n of A+BA+B satisfies P{sn(A+B)≤uN}≤exp⁡(−vN){\mathbb P}\bigl\{s_n(A+B)\le u\sqrt{N}\bigr\}\le \exp(-vN). The result holds without any moment assumptions on distribution of the entries of AA.

New examples of K-monotone weighted Banach couples

Some new examples of K-monotone couples of the type (X, X(w)), where X is a symmetric space on [0, 1] and w is a weight on [0, 1], are presented. Based on the property of the w-decomposability of a symmetric space we show that, if a weight w changes sufficiently fast, all symmetric spaces X with non-trivial Boyd indices such that the Banach couple (X, X(w)) is K-monotone belong to the class of ultrasymmetric Orlicz spaces. If, in addition, the fundamental function of X is t^{1/p} for some p \in [1, \infty], then X = L_p. At the same time a Banach couple (X, X(w)) may be K-monotone for some non-trivial w in the case when X is not ultrasymmetric. In each of the cases where X is a Lorentz, Marcinkiewicz or Orlicz space we have found conditions which guarantee that (X, X(w)) is K-monotone.
