Observationally-induced algebras in Domain Theory

In this paper we revise and simplify the notion of observationally induced algebra introduced by Simpson and Schroeder for the purpose of modelling computational effects in the particular case where the ambient category is given by classical domain theory. As examples of the general framework we consider the various powerdomains. For the particular case of the Plotkin powerdomain the general recipe leads to a somewhat unexpected result which, however, makes sense from a Computer Science perspective. We analyze this "deviation" and show how to reobtain the original Plotkin powerdomain by imposing further conditions previously considered by R.~Heckmann and J.~Goubault-Larrecq.

The Cuntz semigroup and domain theory

Domain theory has its origins in Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science. Mathematically it combines order and topology. Its central concepts have their origin in the idea of approximating ideal objects by their relatively finite or, more generally, relatively compact parts. The development of domain theory in recent years was mainly motivated by question in denotational semantics and the theory of computation. But since 2008, domain theoretical notions and methods are used in the theory of C*-algebras in connection with the Cuntz semigroup. This paper is largely expository. It presents those notions of domain theory that seem to be relevant for the theory of Cuntz semigroups and have sometimes been developed independently in both communities. It also contains a new aspect in presenting results of Elliott, Ivanescu and Santiago on the cone of traces of a C*-algebra as a particular case of the dual of a Cuntz semigroup.

On the equivalence of state transformer semantics and predicate transformer semantics

G. Plotkin and the author have worked out the equivalence between state transformer semantics and predicate transformer semantics in a domain theoretical setting for programs combining nondeterminism and probability. Works of C. Morgan and co-authors, Keimel, Rosenbusch and Streicher, already go in the same direction using only discrete state spaces. It is the aim of this paper to exhibit a general framework in which one can hope that state transformer semantics and predicate transformer semantics are equivalent. We use a notion of entropicity borrowed from universal algebra and a relaxed setting adapted to the domain theoretical situation.
