Generic tropical initial ideals of Cohen-Macaulay algebras

We study the generic tropical initial ideals of a positively graded Cohen-Macaulay algebra $R$ over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$. Building on work of Römer and Schmitz, we give a formula for each initial ideal, and we express the associated quasivaluations in terms of certain $I$-adic filtrations. As a corollary, we show that in the case that $R$ is a domain, every initial ideal coming from the codimension-$1$ skeleton of the tropical variety is prime, so "generic presentations of Cohen-Macaulay domains are well-poised in codimension-$1$."

Intersections of Hypersurfaces and Ring of Conditions of a Spherical Homogeneous Space

We prove a version of the BKK theorem for the ring of conditions of a spherical homogeneous space $G/H$. We also introduce the notion of ring of complete intersections, firstly for a spherical homogeneous space and secondly for an arbitrary variety. Similarly to the ring of conditions of the torus, the ring of complete intersections of $G/H$ admits a description in terms of volumes of polytopes.

On degenerations of projective varieties to complexity-one T-varieties

Let $R$ be a positively graded finitely generated $\textbf{k}$-domain with Krull dimension $d+1$. We show that there is a homogeneous valuation $\mathfrak{v}: R \setminus \{0\} \to \mathbb{Z}^d$ of rank $d$ such that the associated graded $\text{gr}_\mathfrak{v}(R)$ is finitely generated. This then implies that any polarized $d$-dimensional projective variety $X$ has a flat deformation over $\mathbb{A}^1$, with reduced and irreducible fibers, to a polarized projective complexity-one $T$-variety (i.e. a variety with a faithful action of a $(d-1)$-dimensional torus $T$). As an application we conclude that any $d$-dimensional complex smooth projective variety $X$ equipped with an integral Kähler form has a proper $(d-1)$-dimensional Hamiltonian torus action on an open dense subset that extends continuously to all of $X$.

A remark on asymptotic enumeration of highest weights in tensor powers of a representation

We consider the semigroup S of highest weights appearing in tensor powers V^k of a finite dimensional representation V of a connected reductive group. We describe the cone generated by S as the cone over the weight polytope of V intersected with the positive Weyl chamber. From this we get a description for the asymptotic of the number of highest weights appearing in V^k in terms of the volume of this polytope.

Complete intersections in spherical varieties

Let G be a complex reductive algebraic group. We study complete intersections in a spherical homogeneous space G/H defined by a generic collection of sections from G-invariant linear systems. Whenever nonempty, all such complete intersections are smooth varieties. We compute their arithmetic genus as well as some of their h^{p,0} numbers. The answers are given in terms of the moment polytopes and Newton-Okounkov polytopes associated to G-invariant linear systems. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition on a collection of linear systems so that the corresponding generic complete intersection is nonempty. This criterion applies to arbitrary quasi-projective varieties (i.e. not necessarily spherical homogeneous spaces). When the spherical homogeneous space under consideration is a complex torus (C^*)^n, our results specialize to well-known results from the Newton polyhedra theory and toric varieties.

Crystal bases and Newton-Okounkov bodies

Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group. We prove that the string parametrization of a crystal basis for a finite dimensional irreducible representation of G extends to a natural valuation on the field of rational functions on the flag variety G/B, which is a highest term valuation corresponding to a coordinate system on a Bott-Samelson variety. This shows that the string polytopes associated to irreducible representations, can be realized as Newton-Okounkov bodies for the flag variety. This is closely related to an earlier result of A. Okounkov for the Gelfand-Cetlin polytopes of the symplectic group. As a corollary we recover a multiplicativity property of the canonical basis due to P. Caldero. We generalize the results to spherical varieties. From these the existence of SAGBI bases for the homogeneous coordinate rings of flag and spherical varieties, as well as their toric degenerations follow, recovering previous results of Caldero, Alexeev-Brion and the author.

Integrable systems, toric degenerations and Okounkov bodies

Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension n equipped with a very ample Hermitian line bundle L. In the first part of the paper, we show that if there exists a toric degeneration of X satisfying some natural hypotheses (which are satisfied in many settings), then there exists a completely integrable system on X in the sense of symplectic geometry. More precisely, we construct a collection of real-valued functions H_1, ... H_n on X which are continuous on all of X, smooth on an open dense subset U of X, and pairwise Poisson-commute on U. Moreover, we show that in many cases, we can construct the integrable system so that the functions H_1, ..., H_n generate a Hamiltonian torus action on U. In the second part, we show that the toric degenerations arising in the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies satisfy all the hypotheses of the first part of the paper. In this case the image of the "moment map" μ= (H_1, ..., H_n): X to R^n is precisely the Okounkov body Δ= Δ(R, v) associated to the homogeneous coordinate ring R of X, and an appropriate choice of a valuation v on R. Our main technical tools come from algebraic geometry, differential (Kaehler) geometry, and analysis. Specifically, we use the gradient-Hamiltonian vector field, and a subtle generalization of the famous Lojasiewicz gradient inequality for real-valued analytic functions. Since our construction is valid for a large class of projective varieties X, this manuscript provides a rich source of new examples of integrable systems. We discuss concrete examples, including elliptic curves, flag varieties of arbitrary connected complex reductive groups, spherical varieties, and weight varieties.

On mixed multiplicities of ideals

Let R be the local ring of a point on a variety X over an algebraically closed field k. We make a connection between the notion of mixed (Samuel) multiplicity of m-primary ideals in R and intersection theory of subspaces of rational functions on X which deals with the number of solutions of systems of equations. From this we readily deduce several properties of mixed multiplicities. In particular, we prove a (reverse) Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for mixed multiplicities due to Teissier and Rees-Sharp. As an application in convex geometry we obtain a proof of a (reverse) Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for covolumes of convex bodies inscribed in a convex cone.

Convex bodies and multiplicities of ideals

We associate convex regions in R^n to m-primary graded sequences of subspaces, in particular m-primary graded sequences of ideals, in a large class of local algebras (including analytically irreducible local domains). These convex regions encode information about Samuel multiplicities. This is in the spirit of the theory of Grobner bases and Newton polyhedra on one hand, and the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies for linear systems on the other hand. We use this to give a new proof, as well as a generalization of a Brunn-Minkowski inequality for multiplicities due to Teissier and Rees-Sharp.

Note on the Grothendieck group of subspaces of rational functions and Shokurov's b-divisors

In a previous paper the authors develop an intersection theory for subspaces of rational functions on an algebraic variety X over complex numbers. In this note, we first extend this intersection theory to an arbitrary algebraically closed ground field. Secondly we give an isomorphism between the group of b-divisors on the birational class of X and the Grothendieck group of the semigroup of subspaces of rational functions on X. The constructed isomorphism moreover preserves the intersection numbers. This provides an alternative approach to b-divisors and their intersection theory.

Convex bodies associated to actions of reductive groups

We associate convex bodies to a wide class of graded G-algebras where G is a connected reductive group. These convex bodies give information about the Hilbert function as well as multiplicities of irreducible representations appearing in the graded algebra. We extend the notion of Duistermaat-Heckman measure to graded G-algebras and prove a Fujita type approximation theorem and a Brunn-Minkowski inequality for this measure. This in particular applies to arbitrary G-line bundles giving an equivariant version of the theory of volumes of line bundles. We generalize the Brion-Kazarnowski formula for the degree of a spherical variety to arbitrary G-varieties. Our approach follows some of the previous works of A. Okounkov. We use the asymptotic theory of semigroups of integral points and Newton-Okounkov bodies developed in our ealier work arXiv:0904.3350

Newton-Okounkov bodies, semigroups of integral points, graded algebras and intersection theory

Generalizing the notion of Newton polytope, we define the Newton-Okounkov body, respectively, for semigroups of integral points, graded algebras, and linear series on varieties. We prove that any semigroup in the lattice Z^n is asymptotically approximated by the semigroup of all the points in a sublattice and lying in a convex cone. Applying this we obtain several results: we show that for a large class of graded algebras, the Hilbert functions have polynomial growth and their growth coefficients satisfy a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. We prove analogues of Fujita approximation theorem for semigroups of integral points and graded algebras, which imply a generalization of this theorem for arbitrary linear series. Applications to intersection theory include a far-reaching generalization of the Kushnirenko theorem (from Newton polytope theory) and a new version of the Hodge inequality. We also give elementary proofs of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality in convex geometry and its analogue in algebraic geometry.

Note on cohomology rings of spherical varieties and volume polynomial

Let G be a complex reductive group and X a projective spherical G-variety. Moreover, assume that the subalgebra A of the cohomology ring H^*(X, R) generated by the Chern classes of line bundles has Poincare duality. We give a description of the subalgebra A in terms of the volume of polytopes. This generalizes the Khovanskii-Pukhlikov description of the cohomology ring of a smooth toric variety. In particular, we obtain a unified description for the cohomology rings of complete flag varieties and smooth toric varieties. As another example we get a description of the cohomology ring of the variety of complete conics. We also address the question of additivity of the moment and string polytopes and prove the additivity of the moment polytope for complete symmetric varieties.

Mixed volume and an extension of intersection theory of divisors

Let K(X) be the collection of all non-zero finite dimensional subspaces of rational functions on an n-dimensional irreducible variety X. For any n-tuple L_1,..., L_n in K(X), we define an intersection index [L_1,..., L_n] as the number of solutions in X of a system of equations f_1 = ... = f_n = 0 where each f_i is a generic function from the space L_i. In counting the solutions, we neglect the solutions x at which all the functions in some space L_i vanish as well as the solutions at which at least one function from some subspace L_i has a pole. The collection K(X) is a commutative semigroup with respect to a natural multiplication. The intersection index [L_1,..., L_n] can be extended to the Grothendieck group of K(X). This gives an extension of the intersection theory of divisors. The extended theory is applicable even to non-complete varieties. We show that this intersection index enjoys all the main properties of the mixed volume of convex bodies. Our paper is inspired by the Bernstein-Kushnirenko theorem from the Newton polytope theory.

Moment polytopes, semigroup of representations and Kazarnovskii's theorem

Two representations of a reductive group G are spectrally equivalent if the same irreducible representations appear in both of them. The semigroup of finite dimensional representations of G with tensor product and up to spectral equivalence is a rather complicated object. We show that the Grothendieck group of this semigroup is more tractable and give a description of it in terms of moment polytopes of representations. As a corollary, we give a proof of the Kazarnovskii theorem on the number of solutions in G of a system f_1(x) = ... = f_m(x) = 0, where m=dim(G) and each f_i is a generic function in the space of matrix elements of a representation pi_i of G.

Newton polytopes for horospherical spaces

A subgroup H of a reductive group G is horospherical if it contains a maximal unipotent subgroup. We describe the Grothendieck semigroup of invariant subspaces of regular functions on G/H as a semigroup of convex polytopes. From this we obtain a formula for the number of solutions of a generic system of equations on G/H in terms of mixed volume of polytopes. This generalizes Bernstein-Kushnirenko theorem from toric geometry.
