A Primer on the Statistical Relation between Wireless Ultra-Reliability and Location Estimation

Location information is often used as a proxy to infer the performance of a wireless communication link. Using a very simple model, this letter unveils a basic statistical relation between the location estimation uncertainty and wireless link reliability. First, a Cramér-Rao bound for the localization error is derived. Then, wireless link reliability is characterized by how likely the outage probability is to be above a target threshold. We show that the reliability is sensitive to location errors, especially when the channel statistics are also sensitive to the location. Finally, we highlight the difficulty of choosing a rate that meets target reliability while accounting for the location uncertainty.

Radio Sensing with Large Intelligent Surface for 6G

This paper leverages the potential of Large Intelligent Surface (LIS) for radio sensing in 6G wireless networks. Major research has been undergone about its communication capabilities but it can be exploited as a formidable tool for radio sensing. By taking advantage of arbitrary communication signals occurring in the scenario, we apply direct processing to the output signal from the LIS to obtain a radio map that describes the physical presence of passive devices (scatterers, humans) which act as virtual sources due to the communication signal reflections. We then assess the usage of machine learning (k-means clustering), image processing and computer vision (template matching and component labeling) to extract meaningful information from these radio maps. As an exemplary use case, we evaluate this method for both active and passive user detection in an indoor setting. The results show that the presented method has high application potential as we are able to detect around 98% of humans passively and 100% active users by just using communication signals of commodity devices even in quite unfavorable Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) conditions.

On Estimation Error Outage for Scalar Gauss-Markov Signals Sent Over Fading Channels

Measurements of a scalar linear Gauss-Markov process are sent over a fading channel. The fading channel is modeled as independent and identically distributed random variables with known realization at the receiver. The optimal estimator at the receiver is the Kalman filter. In contrast to the classical Kalman filter theory, given a random channel, the Kalman gain and the error covariance become random. Then the probability distribution function of expected estimation error and its outage probability can be chosen for estimation quality assessment. In this paper and in order to get the estimation error outage, we provide means to characterize the stationary probability density function of the random expected estimation error. Furthermore and for the particular case of the i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channels, upper and lower bounds for the outage probability are derived which provide insight and simpler means for design purposes. We also show that the bounds are tight for the high SNR regime, and that the outage probability decreases linearly with the inverse of the average channel SNR.

Minimum Mean Square Error Estimation Under Gaussian Mixture Statistics

This paper investigates the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation of x, given the observation y = Hx+n, when x and n are independent and Gaussian Mixture (GM) distributed. The introduction of GM distributions, represents a generalization of the more familiar and simpler Gaussian signal and Gaussian noise instance. We present the necessary theoretical foundation and derive the MMSE estimator for x in a closed form. Furthermore, we provide upper and lower bounds for its mean square error (MSE). These bounds are validated through Monte Carlo simulations.
