Non-reciprocity using quadrature-phase time-varying slab resonators

In this paper, it is shown that non-reciprocity can be observed in time-varying media without employing spatio-temporal modulated permittivities. We show that by using only two one dimensional Fabry-Perot slabs with time-periodic permittivities having quadrature phase difference, it is possible to achieve considerable non-reciprocity in transmission at the incidence frequency. To analyze such scenario, generalized transfer matrices are introduced to find the wave amplitudes of all harmonics in all space. The results are verified by in-house FDTD simulations. Moreover, in order to have a simple model of such time-varying slab resonators, a time-perturbed coupled mode theory is developed for multiple resonances, and it is shown that the results obtained by this method and the analytical method are in excellent agreement.

Modeling of Periodic Array of Cut-through Slits with Periodic Surface Conductivity at the Interfaces of an Anisotropic Medium

A periodic arrangement of one-dimensional slits carved in perfect electric conductor is investigated and an equivalent model based on the effective medium theory is derived. The proposed model is no longer fully homogeneous and features periodic surface conductivity on its upper and lower interfaces. Therefore, and in sheer contrast to all the previous attempts that were successful in mimicking only the zeroth-order diffracted waves, it is capable of emulating both specular and non-specular diffraction orders. The parameters of the equivalent model are found by comparing the scattered waves of the proposed model against those of the original structure obtained by invoking the rigorous mode matching technique based on the single mode approximation inside the slits. The proposed model is characterized by diagonal anisotropic permittivity and permeability tensors together with a periodic surface conductivity at the interfaces of the metallic grating and the ambient environment. The accuracy of the model is verified by the full-wave simulations. The proposed approach might be useful for devising applications which work based on the characteristics of higher Floquet orders.

Critical study and discrimination of different formulations of electromagnetic force density and consequent stress tensors inside matter

By examination of the exerted electromagnetic (EM) force on boundary of an object in a few examples, we look into the compatibility of the stress tensors corresponding to different formulae of the EM force density with special relativity. Ampere-Lorentz's formula of the EM force density is physically justifiable in that the electric field and the magnetic flux density act on the densities of the total charges and the total currents, unlike Minkowski's formula which completely excludes the densities of the bounded charges and the bounded currents inside homogeneous media. Abraham's formula is fanciful and devoid of physical meaning. Einstein-Laub's formula seems to include the densities of the total charges and the total currents at first sight, but grouping the bounded charges and the bounded currents into point-like dipoles erroneously results in the hidden momentum being omitted, hence the error in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 193901 (2012)]. Naturally, the Ampere-Lorentz stress tensor accords with special relativity. The Minkowski stress tensor is also consistent with special relativity. It is worth noting that the mathematical expression of the Minkowski stress tensor can be quite different from the well-known form of this stress tensor in the literature. We show that the Einstein-Laub stress tensor is incompatible with special relativity, and therefore we rebut the Einstein-Laub force density. Since the Abraham momentum density of the EM fields is inherently corresponding to the Einstein-Laub force density [Phys. Rev. Lett 111, 043602 (2013)], our rebuttal may also shed light on the controversy over the momentum of light.

Photonic band-structure and optical S-matrix analyses of the proposed superconducting nanostructures

Special optical structures composed of superconducting nanostructure based on the elemental type-II and layered high-Tc superconductors are proposed. The photonic band structure and the optical S-matrix are calculated for these proposed structures for different geometrical values. Such structures produce terahertz (THz) photonic band gap, which is controlled by the temperature and geometrical parameters. In addition, the proposed structures show controllable optical reflectance and transmittance in the considered terahertz range. The calculations are performed in a special frequency range in which the refractive index of the layered superconductors has negative value according to the previous analyses.
