Commensurability growth of branch groups

Fixing a subgroup $Γ$ in a group $G$, the commensurability growth function assigns to each $n$ the cardinality of the set of subgroups $Δ$ of $G$ with $[Γ: Γ\cap Δ][Δ: Γ\cap Δ] = n$. For pairs $Γ\leq A$, where $A$ is the automorphism group of a $p$-regular tree and $Γ$ is finitely generated, we show that this function can take on finite, countable, or uncountable cardinals. For almost all known branch groups $Γ$ (the first Grigorchuk group, the twisted twin Grigorchuk group, Pervova groups, Gupta-Sidki groups, etc.) acting on $p$-regular trees, this function is precisely $\aleph_0$ for any $n = p^k$.

Full residual finiteness growths of nilpotent groups

Full residual finiteness growth of a finitely generated group $G$ measures how efficiently word metric $n$-balls of $G$ inject into finite quotients of $G$. We initiate a study of this growth over the class of nilpotent groups. When the last term of the lower central series of $G$ has finite index in the center of $G$ we show that the growth is precisely $n^b$, where $b$ is the product of the nilpotency class and dimension of $G$. In the general case, we give a method for finding an upper bound of the form $n^b$ where $b$ is a natural number determined by what we call a terraced filtration of $G$. Finally, we characterize nilpotent groups for which the word growth and full residual finiteness growth coincide.

Groups with near exponential residual finiteness growth

A function $\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ is near exponential if it is bounded above and below by functions of the form $2^{n^c}$ for some $c > 0$. In this article we develop tools to recognize the near exponential residual finiteness growth in groups acting on rooted trees. In particular, we show the near exponential residual finiteness growth for certain branch groups, including the first Grigorchuk group, the family of Gupta-Sidki groups and their variations, and Fabrykowski-Gupta groups. We also show that the family of Gupta-Sidki p-groups, for $p\geq 5$, have super-exponential residual finiteness growths.

Local commensurability graphs of solvable groups

The commensurability index between two subgroups $A, B$ of a group $G$ is $[A : A \cap B] [B : A\cap B]$. This gives a notion of distance amongst finite-index subgroups of $G$, which is encoded in the p-local commensurability graphs of $G$. We show that for any metabelian group, any component of the $p$-local commensurabilty graph of $G$ has diameter bounded above by 4. However, no universal upper bound on diameters of components exists for the class of finite solvable groups. In the appendix we give a complete classification of components for upper triangular matrix groups in $\text{GL}(2, \mathbb{F}_q)$.

The topology of local commensurability graphs

We initiate the study of the $p$-local commensurability graph of a group, where $p$ is a prime. This graph has vertices consisting of all finite-index subgroups of a group, where an edge is drawn between $A$ and $B$ if $[A : A\cap B]$ and $[B: A\cap B]$ are both powers of $p$. We show that any component of the $p$-local commensurability graph of a group with all nilpotent finite quotients is complete. Further, this topological criterion characterizes such groups. In contrast to this result, we show that for any prime $p$ the $p$-local commensurability graph of any large group (e.g. a nonabelian free group or a surface group of genus two or more or, more generally, any virtually special group) has geodesics of arbitrarily long length.

Linear groups with Borel's property

When does Borel's theorem on free subgroups of semisimple groups generalize to other groups? We initiate a systematic study of this question and find positive and negative answers for it. In particular, we fully classify fundamental groups of surfaces and von Dyck groups that satisfy Borel's theorem. Further, as a byproduct of this theory, we make headway on a question of Breuillard, Green, Guralnick, and Tao concerning double word maps.

Approximating a group by its solvable quotients

The solvable Farb growth of a group quantifies how well-approximated the group is by its finite solvable quotients. In this note we present a new characterization of polycyclic groups which are virtually nilpotent. That is, we show that a group has solvable Farb growth which is at most polynomial in $\log(n)$ if and only if the group is polycyclic and virtually nilpotent. We also give new results concerning approximating oriented surface groups by nilpotent quotients. As a consequence of this, we prove that a natural number $C$ exists so that any nontrivial element of the $Ck$th term of the lower central series of a finitely generated oriented surface group must have word length at least $k$. Here $C$ depends only on the choice of generating set. Finally, we give some results giving new lower bounds for the solvable Farb growth of some metabelian groups (including the Lamplighter groups).

Generalizing Magnus' characterization of free groups to some free products

A residually nilpotent group is \emph{$k$-parafree} if all of its lower central series quotients match those of a free group of rank $k$. Magnus proved that $k$-parafree groups of rank $k$ are themselves free. In this note we mimic this theory with finite extensions of free groups, with an emphasis on free products of the cyclic group $C_p$, for $p$ an odd prime. We show that for $n \leq p$ Magnus' characterization holds for the $n$-fold free product $C_p^{*n}$ within the class of finite-extensions of free groups. Specifically, if $n \leq p$ and $G$ is a finitely generated, virtually free, residually nilpotent group having the same lower central series quotients as $C_p^{*n}$, then $G \cong C_p^{*n}$. We also show that such a characterization does not hold in the class of finitely generated groups. That is, we construct a rank 2 residually nilpotent group $G$ that shares all its lower central series quotients with $\ffp$, but is not $\ffp$.
